Apple is reportedly getting ready to launch a less expensive 8GB iPad 2 alongside the iPad 3 on March 7 in San Francisco, according to a new report today by DigiTimes.

Citing “unnamed sources from within Apple’s supply chain”, DigiTimes reports that the technology giant will unveil 16GB and 32GB versions of the iPad 3 on March 7. the next-generation slate is said to feature a high-definition display, a quad-core A5X or A6 processor, embedded AT&T and Verizon 4G LTE, and possibly global GSM support.

At the same event, Apple is expected to reveal the cheaper version of the iPad 2 that will only include 8GB of internal storage. While not confirmed, the drop in storage could drop the price of the iPad 2 by perhaps $100 to $399 or possibly even $349.

As always, most Apple reports should be take with a grain of salt – especially when they originate from DigiTimes. the publication has a long history of being wrong and right, but a cheaper 8GB iPad 2 sounds just about right, so we’ll have to see.
