The world of technology has taught us time and time again that creating a superior product is not even half the battle. the marketing, distribution, and ongoing maintenance of a product are just as important for its success.
WebOS is the perfect example of a product many praised but did not withstand the pressures of the competitive mobile industry. the BlackBerry Playbook and its QNX OS is on its way to joining that category. Or maybe not.
The Playbook, as I wrote here, is a fantastic tablet. It has the best multitasking system I have seen on a tablet to date. Its video playback quality is top notch, and its speed and responsiveness is unparalleled. Yet, the market has spoken and the Playbook is a failure from a commercial perspective. It might be the lack of apps, it might be the strange and uncharacteristic lack of an email application on a RIM device, but whatever the case may be, this thing is not selling.
Well, BlackBerry announced that it will be releasing the next version of the Playbook, 2.0 within the month and truth be told, it looks nice, very nice. somehow, though, I don’t see the addition of an email and calendar solution plus a few nifty social features as things that will take a complete failure of a product and transform it into something that can even make the iPad think of losing sleep at night.
The ability to run Android apps on the Playbook, something RIM has been talking about for months, now THAT is something that might make this tablet a practical option for someone looking for a portable and powerful tablet device.
