5 Unique Uses for Saran Plastic Food Wrap

You probably have at least one roll of plastic wrap in your kitchen drawer right now. It’s great for covering food items before you store them in your refrigerator or cupboard. If you cover food containers with plastic wrap before you place them in the microwave, food won’t spatter and make a mess all over the inside. I keep several rolls of this sealer on hand at all times. Because, besides using it in the kitchen, it has many other uses around the house. Here are my 5 unique uses for Saran™ plastic food Wrap:

1. Create Makeshift Snow Boot Covers

During a recent blizzard, we got 17 inches of snow. I’ve been wearing low-cut hiking boots outside, so I knew I was going to end up with snow in my boots and cold, wet legs when I shoveled snow. Unless, I made myself some makeshift snow boot covers! So, I used a roll of plastic food wrap to cover the top of my hiking boots. I then continued wrapping my legs all the way up to my knees with the flexible plastic. After I secured the edges with a piece of duct tape, I was ready to venture out into the deep snow for a lengthy session. When I returned to the house, I wasn’t surprised to find the Saran™ Wrap had kept my feet and legs dry.

2. Seal Up Small, Drafty Windows

The small window in my bathroom tends to be drafty, especially when the wind’s hitting that side of the house in the wintertime. One bitter-cold night, I determined that window needed to be sealed up before I froze. So I grabbed a roll of Saran™ Wrap and did the job with that and a roll of duct tape. Generally, that heavy duty, clear plastic you buy to seal up leaky windows with is thick enough to apply one layer. Since plastic food wrap is considerably thinner, you’ll need at least three or four layers to do the trick.

3. Use Plastic Wrap to Keep a Cast Dry

Anytime you have a cast on your arm or leg, you can keep it dry when you bathe in the tub by simply using a roll of Saran™ Wrap. Simply wrap the entire cast in the plastic from one end to the other. Secure the edges with some transparent tape, and you’re ready to climb into the tub!

4. Make Attractive, Sealable Liners for Gift Baskets

The next time you make up a gift basket for a family member or friend, use Saran™ Wrap to make the liner. Just place two sheets of the plastic in a “+” across the bottom of the empty basket. Then, place two more sheets in an “X” on top of that. Place the items in the gift basket. Finally, pull the ends of the plastic wrap up and fold them over each other to seal. You can top it off with a ribbon if you’d like!

5. Make Some Lightweight Plastic Rope in a Pinch

Have you ever needed a short length of rope to tie a box shut with? I have found myself in need of a lightweight rope on many occasions. Until I figured out the trick of using Saran™ Wrap. Just cut off a sheet of plastic food wrap as long as the rope needs to be. Then, twist it in your hands until it’s the diameter you need. You can tie a box shut, put your hair in a pony tail or use the plastic rope for a number of other uses.

What Does a Registry Cleaner Do ?

A registry cleaner scans the system for obsolete files and links and deletes them from the system registry to make the system run faster and more efficiently.

The registry was designed to speed up the operating system but this very intention and design by Microsoft could prove detrimental to your system is the registry is not serviced and maintained by regularly using a good registry cleaner software to clean the registry of useless entries that are slowing down the system and taking up disk space.

There are many registry cleaners such as the PC Mantra’s registry cleaner, the PC registry cleaner and the Windows XP registry cleaner that can spruce up your system and make it much more enjoyable to use. Registry cleaner software, as any registry cleaner software, scans the system and traces obsolete or outdated data. Then after determining the good from the bad the registry cleaner deletes the redundant data enabling your PC to perform error free and more efficiently than before running the registry cleaner.

Ensure The Registry Cleaner Has A Good Backup Function

Before using a registry cleaner it is of paramount importance to ensure if the software has a registry backup function. This is important because in case the cleaner goes wrong the system will crash and will need to be restored with this backup to get the system back to its previous level of functioning. This can occur if the registry cleaner inadvertently deletes some file in the registry. You can download a free version of any registry cleaner or a trial version. However, a free or trial version will not have all the features enabled in the download so it is always good to have a licensed version of the registry cleaner software. In fact it is always good to have a licensed version of any software to keep your system running error free and efficiently.

A corrupted Registry Will Crash The System

If the registry of an operating system is damaged or corrupted the entire system will crash or become very unstable. This could render the system unusable. So, the registry is a vital part of the computer that has to be kept in very good working condition. If this part of the computer gets filled with trash, such as broken links caused by uninstalling software and not removing the entries from the registry, or outdated entries that do not need to be there the whole system will slow down drastically. Believe it or not a single day on the system can enter more than a thousand entries in the registry. Forty percent of which will be useless after the days work is done. These entries will have to be removed with the help of a good registry cleaner. Though a few thousand entries will have no significant effect on the system they will over a period of time.

Windows 8 – What We Know So Far

With the Developer Preview release of Windows 8, many more details about this exciting new operating system have become clear. With a touch screen interface based on Windows Phone 7, an app-centric under interface and the end of the old default desktop, a real change to computing is coming!

Windows 8 Already?

Windows 7 seems like it only just got here, but already there is talk of Windows 8, with a preview movie, an idea of the types of systems it will run on and news that it will feature a radical new user interface based on the successful Metro UI seen on Windows Phone 7.

In fairness, however, Windows 7 was never really meant to be. Released as a response to the overall poor user experience found in Windows Vista, it is really nothing more than an improved UI and a few extra features rather than a considerable update.

Windows 8, meanwhile, was always meant to be a big step up towards a new generation of operating systems, and with the new netbook and tablet markets demanding operating systems that are scalable and capable of running on non-Intel compatible chipsets, Microsoft are planning to release what could be described as the most radical version of their operating system since Windows 95.

Prior to the release of the Developer Preview, Steve Ballmer said that Windows 8 would be Microsoft’s "riskiest" release to date. However, feedback from the preview from developers and journalists has been positive, with some even speculating that this version of Windows could disrupt the near monopoly on tablet devices currently enjoyed by Apple.

What is Windows 8?

As the name suggests, Windows 8 is the next version of Microsoft’s popular operating system, currently expected to be released in 2012. While retaining a version of the traditional user interface as seen in Windows Vista and 7, the new Windows 8 will also feature a new UI designed for use on tablets and touchscreen displays.

Beyond all of this, however, you will still be able to access all of the usual features as you currently can on Windows, such as installing printers, sharing files and folders, sending emails and browsing the web.

The big draw for Windows 8, however, isn’t just the new user interface (more on that below) but the fact that the operating system will be scalable for installation on different device types. For instance, a high end PC with an Intel or AMD 64-bit CPU will be running the same version of Windows as an ARM CPU-equipped tablet or slate. This has particular advantages – both at home and in the workplace – for media and file sharing, among other things.

Windows 8 also heralds a new approach from Microsoft in the area of distributing software. For many years Microsoft has provided access to its software via online stores backed by their powerful servers, enabling buyers of Microsoft Office to quickly purchase and download the productivity suite. With the new focus on apps, a new Windows app store will be launched providing an easy way to download all of the popular and regularly used applications such as chat clients, Facebook, Twitter, etc. as well as more expensive offerings.

Does New Architecture Limit Backwards Compatibility?

Previously, Windows hasn’t been available for any device running non-Intel or non-AMD architecture, so offering support for ARM devices is quite a diversion for Microsoft.

However, while the basics of the operating system and user interface are expected to remain the same from device to device, it won’t be possible to run the same software on a medium spec laptop and on a tablet.

For instance, many games and applications depend on the presence of a particular specification of CPU, RAM and hard disk space – not to mention graphics memory – in order to run. Without these present, backwards compatibility for such software will not be possible if you attempt to install on a tablet or low spec notebook or netbook.

The minimum spec for the developer preview of Windows 8 – a release for developers to tune their existing applications and develop new ones for the new OS – is a 1 GHz x86 or x86-64 processor, 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit systems or 2 GB for 64-bit architecture, DirectX 9 capable graphics, 16 GB of HDD for the 32-bit version, 20 GB of HDD for the 64-bit release and a screen resolution of 1024×768 to use Metro.

Devices with a touch screen interface will also benefit, although this isn’t necessary.

Going forward, the system requirements for the various types of supported device will be very different.

Why is a New User Interface Required?

Although touch screen support has been included for tablet PCs in Windows 7, it isn’t used very regularly. This is mainly because there aren’t many Windows 7 tablet PCs in use at present, and those that are in use are often used in conjunction with a stylus.

The new user interface is designed for fingers, rather than styli, and owes a lot to the Metro UI seen on Windows Phone 7 devices. With this finger-based user interface you can browse and launch applications, snap in a second app for multitasking, rotate through a list of currently running apps and use an onscreen keyboard, as well as enjoy general interaction with the file system and supported services.

It all looks pretty cool, but if you don’t have a touch screen device, it doesn’t matter, as the new UI can be used with a mouse if required. Disabling the Metro interface would certainly be preferable for the majority of enterprise users if Windows 8 is truly going to be a single "do it all" operating system, but early signs are that the traditional Windows desktop will be available as an application rather than a state to revert to.

Tablets, PCs and Notebooks

Windows 8 has been conceived as a single, scalable user interface for use across a multitude of device types. While Google has Android for mobiles, Android Honeycomb for tablets and the coming Chrome OS for computers, and Apple have iOS for mobiles and tablets and Mac OS X for desktop and laptops, Microsoft’s past experience with scaling the operating system depending on the host hardware (such as in Windows 7) could see them gain considerable credit for taking this approach.

Currently available demonstration videos feature Windows 8 running on Core i5-powered slates rather than lower-end devices, but with devices equipped with NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 and other ARM multi-core system- on-a-chip variants said to be capable of running Windows 8 it is likely that we’ll see demonstrations of the operating system’s scalability later on.

Certainly the presence of a Metro UI-like touch interface is welcomed and will generate plenty of goodwill among technology journalists impressed with Windows Phone 7. If Microsoft’s support for tablets can be as impressive as Apple and Android’s while maintaining a strong experience for the standard Windows desktop user, then Windows 8 could prove to be a massive success.

Can I Listen to Audio Books on My Nook EBook ...

The Nook eBook reader has become such a popular tablet, you might be planning to buy yourself one this year. Maybe some lucky loved one will be getting a Nook for a Christmas present, birthday gift or other type of surprise. Whoever you plan to purchase the Nook tablet for, be sure you understand exactly what the Nook can and cannot do.

About the Nook eBook Reader

First of all, let me say that my sister absolutely loves her Nook eBook reader! She’s like a kid in a candy store when it comes to the multitude of ebooks she has access to. She can buy Barnes & Noble ebooks to read, make other types of ebook purchases, or take advantage of various free ebook offers. After enjoying the Nook for a whole year now, my sister is able to easily maneuver her way around the Nook on her own. She rarely calls me, my niece, or someone else to help her accomplish something on the Nook.

What is described as the “World’s Best 7″ media tablet” is really not that difficult to use, even if you have absolutely no computer or digital skills to speak of. When it comes to computer technology my sister is even less knowledgeable than my mother, and that’s saying a lot. But it didn’t take her long to get comfortable scrolling the easy to read Nook with its vibrant screen. The Nook offers both the smooth appeal of touch technology, coupled with physical buttons for volume control, and locating the home position. The Nook is an excellent gift idea for the avid reader. However, it may not be the best choice if the reader plans on listening to lots of audio books.

Nook Audio Book Issues

When it comes to listening to audio books on the Nook, there is an issue that purchasers should be aware of. The most popular competition to the Nook eBook reader is the Kindle Fire tablet. Because they are both popular eBook readers, people tend to think they are interchangeable and can be used the same way. The truth is, the Nook was created for readers, so the other types of media features are incidental. According to one NBC news review about the Nook, “Things start to get weird when we get into the other forms of media.” That includes the ability to listen to certain audio books on the Nook device.

Since the Nook is a product of Barnes & Noble, you can visit BN.com, as well as a local Barnes & Noble Nook Store to make purchases. Barnes & Noble has a limited amount of audio books available for listening to on the Nook. What they offer, compared to what’s on the internet is virtually a drop in the bucket. Audio books are popular online and there is an abundance of them in various formats. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to access them on your Nook tablet, if you can access them at all.

Processing Audio Books

Processing audio books so you can listen to them on the Nook ebook reader is inconvenient. This is your only option when you’re done listening to the limited Barnes & Noble library of Nook audio books. If you want to get access to other audio books, such as in MP3 format, you will need to download the files to your computer. Afterwards, you can copy the files from your computer to the Nook’s internal drive via USB. For a Nook owner like my sister, this is a chore that she wouldn’t be bothered doing if she even knew how. It is obvious that the Nook ebook reader is a tablet that is not really designed for listening to audio books.

If listening to audio books on your tablet is a primary concern, you may want to rethink getting a Nook. However, it is the perfect choice if you want an ebook reading experience that is believed to surpass the competition in every way. The Nook can be purchased at department stores like Sears, Target, Best Buy and Radio Shack, in addition to the Barnes & Noble Nook Store. The cost currently ranges from $149 – $199 dollars.

New Take on the Alphabet in a Language Adventure ...

Brookline, MA (PRWEB) December 15, 2011

Parents are all too familiar with the alphabet book: “a is for apple, b is for banana,” yet they know this literary staple is a useful learning tool for their young children. Pinwheel Books, an independent publisher of children’s books and animated apps based in Brookline, MA, has now published a twist on the alphabet book that will delight both children and parents with its unexpected pairings of letters and words.

In “Francisco’s Fabulous Friends: An Adventure from A to Z” the quirky alliterations are brought to life with illustrations of animals engaged in active pursuits. They are all friends of Francisco the Frog, who introduces them to the reader; for example: “Oscar the ostrich is operatic. He needs a spotlight, don’t you think?” Francisco’s friends defy cliché and the book operates with a gentle humor.

Taco Matthews is an author and illustrator of children’s books. She created Francisco the Frog as a character many years ago, when she was a landscape designer in her native Japan. She has illustrated four children’s books (one presented as a story on Japanese television). As a graphic designer she has created posters for the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Taco lives with her husband and two children in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is at work on Francisco’s next adventure, Francisco’s Fabulous Figs, a counting book, also to be publisher by Pinwheel Books.

Francisco’s Fabulous Friends: An Adventure from A to Z is available in print ($14.95) and electronic editions ($4.99) as an application for the iPad, iPhone, Nook, Kindle, and other e readers. To preview the book online, readers may go to pinwheelbooks

One parent’s review of Francisco’s Fabulous Friends: “I downloaded the electronic version of this book to my iPad and my 2.5 year old loves to “read” it! I like that it’s not simply the usual “A is for apple” “C is for cat” story. Instead, for each letter, 3 words are given – typically one simple one, one name of a “friend,” and one more advanced word. For example, F says “fish, Francis, fashionable” then goes on to give a sentence including all 3 words. Very cleverly written and beautiful illustrations! Also, the more advanced words make it a great book for older siblings to read with their younger brothers & sisters. Would definitely recommend!” (Posted on Amazon Books.)

Santa Tracker (Norad)

We have been following The Santa Tracker for years. I remember when it first came out it was quite basic, now it more advance..but still fun to watch. Even though my son is 20 years old, he still wanted to know if we were going to put The Santa Tracker on…so of course, I am.

Never heard of Norad, The Santa Tracker?

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) will track the jolly man in the red suit as he makes his annual trek across the world.According to the command’s Web site, Santa and his reindeer are picked up by radar as soon as they take off from the North Pole.

“Amazingly, Rudolph’s bright red nose gives off an infrared signature, which allow our satellites to detect Rudolph and Santa,â€Â the Web site states.Cameras are also used to broadcast images of Santa, which will be posted online as he makes stops, and a group of fighter jets will escort him and his sleigh.“Canadian NORAD fighter pilots flying the CF-18 intercept welcome Santa to North America. In the United States, American NORAD fighter pilots in either the F-15 or the F-16 get the thrill of flying alongside Santa and his famous reindeer,â€Â the Web site says.

In addition to tracking Santa on the NORAD Tracks Santa homepage, his flight will also be tracked on Google Earth. For more information, or to track Santa, go to NORAD’s Web site at www.noradsanta.org, or go to www.earth.google.com to follow him on Google Earth.

(from: cumberlink

I also just discovered that you can follow Norad via Samsung 2010 Roadmap: Tablet PC, 3D and LED Monitors in your car. So that is fun if your traveling with children on Christmas Eve.

Have fun…and remember, Santa is watching!

How Can I Read Music on My Tablet?

Rather than lugging around cases and folders full of sheet music you can view them as PDFs with a music viewing app. Some of these are now available for tablet computers, so whether you have an iPad, an Android or a high-end Windows tablet, there is a music reader app for you!

As more and more uses for tablet computers become apparent, more and more apps are released that assist in using these versatile devices in new and interesting ways.

For instance, you might want to use your tablet as a drawing pad, or make the most of its audio recording capabilities. Similarly, you may be enjoying some eBooks on your tablet, or simply spend all of your time playing games.

Another popular use for tablet computers is as a music reader capable of displaying sheet music. In the past, sheet music would be purchased from music shops and propped up on a stand, where the musician would turn the pages as they played. A slightly inelegant solution for those of us not quick enough with the page turns, this has been the way of things for several hundred years.

What is a Music Reader?

A music reader is an application that enables you to follow the tune that you are playing (on piano, violin, flute, etc.) on a computer or tablet. As a piece of software, there are various advantages that this approach offers over sheet music,, such as the fact that no stand or sheet music needs to be carried around (although this is always wise as a contingency. After all, tablets can crash or run out of battery, but paper is 100% reliable unless it’s blown away by a stiff wind).

Music reader apps can also offer the ability to scan sheet music into the program, allowing you to keep the original locked away where it is safe. This could prove particularly useful for anyone with a large collection of sheet music, or for any piece that is currently in development.

Additional features are often included in this type of software, such as annotation options, integrated recording options and even a metronome.

Currently one of the biggest names in music reader applications for computers and tablets is Music Reader, who provides apps for Windows, Mac OS X and iOS.

Music Readers for iPad

A couple of popular apps are available for iPad tablets that are ideal for reading sheet music. The first is the Music Reader app, which lets you view sheet music stored in PDF format, annotate the sheets, add and remove standard music notation, and interact with the digitized sheet music in other ways such as manual and automated page turning, zooming and even viewing the page on an external display. You can also take advantage of a tuner, metronome and sound recorder tools.

You can find out more about the Music Reader iPad app in the iTunes App Store or via their website at www.musicreader.net.

An alternative for iPad is iStand, a tool that allows you to display scores in JPG or PDF format. iStand also takes advantage of iTunes file sharing, allowing you to quickly download any sheets that you have forgotten to take with you, and offers annotation options, the adding of notation symbols and even file export options.

Find out more in the App Store or via the iStand home page at istand.maissmusic.de/iStand.

Android Tablet Music Readers

If your tablet of choice is an Android Honeycomb device, the options are somewhat limited at present, with only the MusicPad Sheet Music Viewer from FreeHandMusic.com available, although this doesn’t have as many features as the iPad options.

As you can see from the screenshot on the right, MusicPad Sheet Music Viewer appears to tick all of the right boxes, and with the option to download more free and premium sheet music from the www.freehandmusic.com website, you should find that this is an adequate solution for Android tablets.

Options for High End Tablet PCs

There is, of course, another type of tablet computer – the high-end Windows tablet, a sort of notebook with the display fitted the wrong way around and a stylus-based touchscreen interface. Often these are hybrid devices, notebooks with the display on a hinged pivot so that it can be easily folded back.

Finale Reader is available as an option for Windows, and allows the user to view, playback and print sheet music that has been downloaded from the Finale Showcase website.

In addition, Music Reader also offers a full Windows application that is just as suited for use on a high-end tablet as it is on a desktop computer. This offers much the same functionality as the iPad version, and is available as a 96 MB download.

Have we covered all of the options? Let us know if there is an app that you think should have been included in this list.

Should You Choose a Windows 7 Tablet PC?

Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android are the most prominent tablet operating systems currently available, but a number of tablets running Windows 7 exist. This article will help you decide if one of those devices would be right for you.

Introducing Windows 7 Tablet PCs

There are a wide variety of tablet PCs either available or coming soon. Most of them run Android, although the best selling option (the iPad) runs iOS. But there is a third way – and that’s Windows 7.

Unlike the other two choices, Windows 7 has all the features you’d expect from a modern desktop. However, this also comes with disadvantages.

What type of tablet do you want?

The iPad has burned the image of the modern tablet into everyone’s brain. Small, thin, with a display size of about ten inches, the iPad is certainly sexy and it’s great for games and media.

That’s not the only way to build a tablet, however. If you choose to go with a Windows 7 tablet PC you’ll have a two different formats to choose from. Many products do have the slate form-factor of the iPad, but the make their own modifications. The ASUS Eee Slate EP121, for example, boasts a giant 12.1" display.

The other format – the one you don’t often find elsewhere – is the convertible. A convertible tablet is a full laptop computer with a screen mounted on a swivel hinge. You can use the product like any other laptop, then swivel the display around and use it as a Windows 7 tablet PC. This is a popular choice for people who want a tablet for productivity reasons; for example, digital artists sometimes use this sort of device for their work as it allows them to use a stylus without lugging a drawing tablet around.

Generally speaking, Windows 7 tablet PCs are best for people who want either a convertible or a very large traditional tablet. While some Android convertible tablets are close to market, they’re unlikely to provide an experience on par with a Windows 7 convertible tablet in terms of processing power.

What kind of performance do you expect?

Performance with Windows 7 tablet PCs is a bit of a touchy subject, because it depends on what you’re looking to do with a device.

In terms of horsepower, most Windows 7 tablets are far and away quicker than the iPad or any Android device. However, you may not notice the difference in computing power if you only intend to browse web pages or view media such as video files or photos. While an iOS or Android tablet may be a little slower, they’re generally very good at what they do.

If you want to embark on processor intensive tasks, you’re better off with a Windows 7 tablet. The iPad 2, for example, can be loaded with a version of iMovie. It’s fine for editing short videos, but a Windows 7 Tablet PC will edit videos much more quickly.

How much battery life do you need?

So far, I’ve outlined Windows 7 tablets as both larger and equipped with much faster hardware. Unfortuantely, this does not come without its consequences.

The iPad 2, the current king of tablet battery life, can endure over ten hours of moderate use. Most Motorola Xoom reviews are finding that at least eight hours is reasonable. With a Windows 7 tablet PC, however, you’ll be lucky to receive six, and you’ll only manage that if you buy a convertible with a decent battery. The more traditional ASUS Eee Slate EP121 can only manage three hours.

You can buy extended or extra batteries for Windows 7 tablets, but this will increase the final purchase price and the weight you must haul around.

Conclusion

Let’s review.

If you want a convertible tablet PC, a Windows 7 tablet will be your best bet. Android tablets are on the way, but are unlikely to be on par with Windows convertibles, which have been made by highly respected manufacturers like Lenovo for years.

If you expect your tablet to be able to run demanding applications, like video and photo editing apps, you should likely buy a Windows 7 tablet.

If you need to be able to use your tablet for more than six hours before recharging, you’ll have to go with the iPad or a good Android tablet.

Overall, Windows 7 tablet PCs are a very unique device. They are weak in some areas, but also strong in others. Hopefully, this article has helped you decide if a Windows 7 tablet fills your needs.
