Absinthe 2 lifts iOS 5.1.1 gadgets over garden ...

iDevice jailbreakers: you can now take almost all of Apple’s iOS 5.1.1 gadgets out of the walled garden, thanks to hacking tool Absinthe 2.0, released today.

The jailbreak software, which only works with iOS 5.1.1 – past versions of the mobile operating system have working jailbreaks already – and will open any iPhone, the latest and last generation of the iPod Touch, and all iPads but the sneaked-out 32nm CPU-equipped iPad 2. the Apple TV can’t use it, either.

Absinthe 2.0

Support for this ‘iPad2,4′ will come “at a later date”, the app’s coders promised. but the Apple TV will not be supported, it seems.

The utility is an untethered jailbreak: re-booting the iDevice at a later date doesn’t require the gadget to be first wired up to iTunes.

Absinthe 2.0 is available for Mac, Windows and Linux, and you can download it here. ®

Get a Logitech Revue with Google TV for $73.99

This is an update of a deal I posted last year.

Google TV: doomed product or stealthApple TV/Roku competitor? Probably the former, given that the set-top box never really caught on, even after Logitech slashed the price from $299 to $99.

And now it’s even less. Newegg has the refurbished Logitech Revue with Google TV for $73.99 shipped. That’s the lowest price I’ve seen on this Internet-meets-TV appliance. Doomed? Maybe. Deal? Definitely!

In case you’re not familiar with the Revue, it goes above and beyond Apple TV- and Roku-style media streaming by offering apps, a Web browser, and a keyboard.

When it first debuted about 18 months ago, the Revue was dinged for lacking support for major content providers like Hulu, and for its very limited selection of apps. It’s still fairly weak on the content front, with Netflix and Pandora the only noteworthy media sources.

However, Google doesn’t seem to be giving up on Google TV. Late last year, the company rolled out its Honeycomb (Android 3.2) update, which affords access to apps via Google Play, and as recently as last month, it overhauled the TV & Movies section.

So the Revue might be a compelling choice for people who like to tinker, who like their set-top boxes hackable and expandable. plus, it’s already a pretty good way to stream Netflix, Pandora, and your own media libraries.

If you already own a Revue, hit the comments and let your fellow cheeps know if you think it’s a worthwhile buy at $74.

Bonus deal: looking for a seriously loadedtablet? Today only, and while supplies last, Daily Steals has the refurbished unlocked Motorola Xoom 10.1-inch Wi-Fi/3G tablet for $269.99, plus $4.99 for shipping. it features 32GB of storage, compatibility with any GSM network, andAndroid 3.0 — with an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) now available. Check out CNET’s review.

Apple TV 3, New iPad 2 Powered By Smaller A5 Chip ...

Chipworks’ teardown of the new Apple TV and the new iPad 2 (that’s now available for $399) revealed that both these devices now have a tweaked A5 chip, which is manufactured using 32-nm process as compared to the older A5 chip’s 45 nm process.

In addition to the reduced die size, the teardown also reveals that the A5 chip that powers Apple TV 3, although advertised as single core, is in fact a dual core chip with one core disabled:

The new A5 processor die is not a single core processor, but contains a dual core processor.  Either Apple is only utilizing one core or they are binning parts. Parts binning is a common process in semiconductors where devices are segregated (binned) based on meeting a subset of the overall requirements,  in this case they could disable the “bad” core, this increases the usable die per wafer, lowering the cost.

Apple reflects this change in its internal naming as well. The $399 iPad 2 is internally referred to as the iPad2,4 and not the iPad2,1.

This suggests that Apple is using the Apple TV and the $399 iPad 2 as a testing ground for the newer 32nm process. since both these devices are not expected to sell as much as the iPhone 4S or the new iPad, there’s not a lot of pressure on the manufacturing process to churn out a huge number of chips. moreover, chips with a faulty core could be used in Apple TV 3 as it anyways ships with one core disabled.

It also indicates that Apple’s planning to bring these smaller chips based on the 32nm process to their high selling products like the iPhone and the iPad very soon.

The dual cores in the iPhone 4S A5 and on the Apple TV A5

The smaller chips helps Apple reduce manufacturing costs and improve performance and battery life. While the former won’t mean much to the consumer, improvement in battery life and performance would surely be appreciated.

Screw The iPod Nano, This Concept Needs To Be The ...

this is a lot like the samsung galaxy note. it looks pretty, its form factor suggests the affordances of two different device categories, but in actuality it offers none. the first problem is that it’s way bigger than the iPod nano, so it’s no good for exercising (you can’t clip it onto your shirt or the waistband of your shorts, and if you’re a nano-as-a-watch person, this is too oblong)The second problem is that the irregular screen size makes it difficult to lay out apps. it looks great in theory, but it presents a huge design and usability headache for both the devs at apple and users who will struggle to figure out the affordances of such a non-standard aspect ratio.furthermore, this will not work as an apple tv remote for the same reason that the acer iconia’s virtual keyboard doesn’t work as a keyboard: there are no physical buttons.the premise of using a remote to manipulate a 10 foot interface, such as that of the apple TV is that you input to the remote, and the output shows up on the TV. Good remotes have well designed and textured buttons, and allow your thumb to feel its way around the remote, so that your eyes can focus on the TV. Without physical buttons, your thumb is effectively ‘blind’, and you would be forced to look at the nano’s screen to input to the TV. this would increase the latency in the visual feedback loop because you would have to switch between looking at and inputting into the remote, and looking at, and receiving output on the TV screen. You would essentially run into the same problem as you currently have when trying to airplay iPad games (as you mentioned in one of your previous articles about the arduino controller for iDevices)

More iPad Plays: 3 Key Items to Watch

Like us on Facebook

So, when the iPad 3 or iPad HD or what might be even called the iPad Steve is shown at a marketing event in San Francisco on Wednesday, watch for a surprise. perhaps it will be a link to the much-mooted Apple TV because the invitations say, “We have something you really have to see. And touch.”

Of course part of the iOS software designed into the iPad family is an easy-to-use touch screen that can be used even by infants. there may be a major advance here.

But it could also be some kind of “hot key” that links with the iCloud and helps to bring in TV, since the new iPad is apparently designed for fourth-generation long-term evolution (4G LTE) networks, sources quoted by Reuters said.

So, with a new tablet that will surely have better resolution and graphics than the iPad 2, there could be TV, especially since rivals such as Google showed applications for Google TV at January's International Consumer Electronics Show.

Buy Apple shares if you're bullish. Apple shares have fallen from their all-time high of $548.21 set only last Thursday. In Tuesday's overall market dip, they've sunk to $529.24, which is still a 31 percent gain for 2012 alone.

Last year, around the October introduction of the iPhone 4S, Apple shares set a new record, then swooned. On Oct. 4, the day of the introduction as well as the last full day in the life of Chairman Steve Jobs, Apple shares fell 5 percent – to $354.24 – before closing down 2 percent at $372.50.

There's a 41 percent difference between Apple's share price then and now. A bullish investor convinced of the iPad franchise might want to load up. A bear, wondering how much farther the price can go and seeing new entrants from Amazon, Samsung Electronics, Lenovo Group and others, might take other action.

Watch for pricing. Surely, Apple will announce pricing and availability for the new iPad. Will it be the same or far above the current $499 suggested retail price of iPad 2?

Having sold more than 55 million iPads at $499, there's little incentive for the Cupertino, Calif. company to cut the price.

However, rather than make the old iPhone 4 and iPhone 3 obsolete, last time CEO Tim Cook led a product introduction, he debuted three-tiered pricing. The new phone was priced from $199, the older model went to $99 and the iPhone 3 became free with a service contract.

Perhaps to unload iPad 2s, Cook may announce something similar. or he may say the iPad 2 will continue to be manufactured for a specific period. At a discount.

Apple's contactors, principally Hai Hon Precision Industries, known as Foxconn, may not want to commit the entire capital required to shift to the new iPad yet.

To be sure, under Jobs, Apple would tag obsolete products immediately.  Cook is his own person, though.

Should Apple’s iPad 3 Launch Really Have ...

This article titled “Apple’s iPad 3 launch targets the television revolution” was written by Juliette Garside, for The Guardian on Wednesday 7th March 2012 19.57 UTC

Wednesday’s iPad 3 launch had a wider purpose than introducing an upgraded tablet. It was Apple’s most coherent effort yet to bind its family of screens closer together, in a way that prepares the ground for the world’s largest technology company to disrupt the world’s most important entertainment medium – broadcasting.

Tim Cook introduced his concept of the “post PC era.” with growing numbers of tablet computers and smartphones, the humble desktop computer is no longer the centre of our digital world. All our screens have become computers, and that revolution is coming to the television set.

A quarter of TV sets being sold today have an internet connection. Apple has yet to reveal a TV set of its own, contenting itself with an upgrade to its set top box, known as Apple TV, which has been on sale for some years now but hooks up to your existing screen rather than an Apple made display.

Some of the improvements to Apple TV and the iPad3 are about preparing for that event.

First of these is high definition. Real HD sets have 1080 lines of vertical resolution. Apple TV’s resolution has been improved, from 720p to 1080p. The iPad 3 will be able to take 1080p video and photos.

The second is an expansion of the iCloud media storage service. This holds any content purchased from iTunes, or uploaded from your PC, in Apple’s servers. The advantage is that your library of photos, videos and music are available on any Apple device, from phones to the television set.

The service already stores photos, TV shows and music. From today it will also store movies bought on the iTunes store.

Another binding technology we already know about is AirPlay, included in Apple’s latest operating systems. This streams images from a phone, PC or a tablet onto a TV set.

The Apple devices are increasingly able to produce and share high definition content, the kind of material that looks good on the biggest screen in the living room.

Apple TV is a rare misfire: it came to market in 2007 and has sold just over 4m units. Paltry compared with 55m iPads in two years. after its latest upgrade, Apple TV can now be seen as a sleeper device, a hint of its maker’s vision for the reinvention of broadcasting, and a test bed for bigger things to come.

Apple TV Will Likely Cost Big When Finally ...

We heard, only just a few hours ago via our own J. Angelo Racoma, about Steve Jobs’ final project, the integrated Apple TV. But now, some additional information has emerged via everybody’s favorite sector, the analysts, who have revealed a bit of information about the Apple TV of their own. not only has such a device been in the works for longer than you may expect, there’s also word on what such a device will likely cost when it emerges. and, in perhaps the grandest Apple tradition, it won’t be cheap.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster reportedly said that this one has been in the works since last September, and this is based on discussions with Asian suppliers who had previously detailed that Apple was looking to invest in LCD technology. not a huge surprise given the iPod / iPhone / iPad lineup, not to mention the MacBooks, but considering that the LCD screens in question could be put out in sizes ranging from 3.5 inches clear up to 50 inches, it did provide some evidence that Apple may have been looking into bringing out an Apple-branded television, which is, in general, something we’ve been hearing about for some time. there are also plenty of television related patents in Apple’s quiver, not to mention the Apple TV set-top box, which essentially is a television system just without a screen.

What’s more, Munster reportedly speculates that such a television, if released, would be offered at a price of around $2000, and that’s before you added content to it. an iTunes TV Pass plan would likely be offered along with it, and that would run, at last report, between $50 and $90 a month. Apple would in turn offer up a top-notch user experience, possibly intertwined with some Siri in there.

It’s somewhat hard to swallow that Apple would so clearly price itself out of the market; many 40 inch televisions, especially in the LCD line, can be had for maybe a quarter of what Apple might charge, and even the best cable packages only approach $50 a month. and as good as Siri is, I’m not sure anyone would be sufficiently interested in paying those kinds of prices.

I may not be in Munster’s camp on this one, but what about you guys? Figure Apple might plan to offer up a high-dollar experience in its television release? or is this another analysis that won’t come off? Either way, the comments section is waiting, so head on down and tell us what you think!

The iPad 2 and Apple TV … Ed Tech Industry ...

What would you rather get for your classroom, an iPad 2 and Apple TV or an Interactive Whiteboard? are your teachers asking for Interactive Whiteboards? Hold on to that discussion and don’t answer until you know all of the possibilities!

I think we now have the ability to put together a very highly effective digital classroom with the combination of iPad 2′s, a digital projector, and an Apple TV. all of this can be done at a fraction of the cost of most 21st century classrooms that have combined the use of Interactive Whiteboards. I just don’t know why you would ever want to purchase them anymore.

Maybe we can get rid of the need for document cameras, scanners, clicker hubs, and still or digital video cameras as well?

Perhaps you don’t know about the new possibilities of this fantastic little black box called Apple TV. Check out this post on IEAR.org that explains how you can setup an Apple TV to allow your iPad 2 to become truly wireless.

Now, if you are looking for the rationale on why you might want to go with this new setup, here is mine!

1. You are not locked into a finite space for interactivity with a “computer” and the ability to share with a large audience. One-way to look at it in my opinion is that you are providing your students with a portable Interactive Whiteboard anywhere you want them to interact with the device.

2. As we all know, there are many apps that provide a robust learning experience that are completely interactive and much better than teacher created Notebook files. we just need everyone to understand and learn the benefits of the workflow provided w/ an iPad. For example: Lets give you an example with “Cells”. Students start with iCell App, take a screenshot, mark it up with Doodle Buddy, go back to the iCell App, take a screenshot, mark it up with Doodle Buddy, etc. Perhaps you are using the iPad camera to add images or videos from materials in your classroom as well. once you have a collection of marked up screenshots, add Replay Note to the mix and you have fantastic possibilities. this is just an example on the fly! this can all be displayed now in real time, at intermittent times of the project, or at the final display of the project.

3. the iPad w/ Apple TV allows your iPad to function as a document camera, still camera, video camera, scanner, e-clicker hub, and Interactive Whiteboard. I argue that you can replace all of that equipment now! How much money is that in savings, $1400 at least? we can add several more of the other devices to that total as well; I haven’t worn a watch in years!

4. the iPad continues to be functional for classroom experiences when you turn off the projector. I have yet to figure out how to do that with a Interactive Whiteboard effectively. I am seeing very little impact from the Interactive Whiteboard software beyond classroom use other than screencasting. the ability to screencast and or record as a document camera through the iPad is so much easier with an easier workflow anyway.

5. the quality of the Interactive Whiteboard software and the lessons provided are over rated. however, with the use of Splashtop on the iPad, you are can still effectively function with the Interactive Whiteboard software.

6. the vast amount of other uses an iPad provides including an e-reader, executive functioning with email, calendar, tasks, reminders, etc.

7. the iPad / Apple TV set up is completely portable. I have yet to see a Interactive Whiteboard get carried under someone’s arm comfortably.

8. Apple TV allows you to use a computer as a media server. When you combine Apple TV’s, you can now pull content from one shared space effectively without a complicated setup for teachers to navigate. Teachers can navigate the Apple TV menu with little to no training. Loading content into photos, video and music is ridiculously easy compared to most media server setups. Additionally, this still allows that computer to be used. For example, we have set our Library Checkout Computer as the Shared Media Resource. You just keep iTunes open and I can pull content to multiple destinations via Apple TV. Previously, our schools had a laptop dedicated to a front “TV” to show slideshows. there is a savings of $900 for my district!

9. Professional Development on an iPad / Apple TV set up in comparison to an Interactive Whiteboard is drastically different. I would love to debate this one with anyone at any time. I have so many examples of very elderly to my 2 1/2 year old who are effectively learning with an iPad. It is painstaking to watch teachers sometimes as they struggle with learning how to use Smart Notebook. You have to remember, teachers are not taking home their IWB and in general, the majority of them do not practice using the software without it attached to the board. however, provide them with an iPad that can mirror and they are using it all the time for the myriad other uses it provides! They are providing their own professional development with the device as a result.

10. we want to see students at the center of the learning. IWB’s continue to be teacher-dominated devices. Teachers appear to be much more comfortable handing over an iPad than they seem to be with bringing the kids. You have to remember, their classmates cannot see what is happening because the students are in the way, etc. Two fantastic colleagues from Illinois, David Sladkey and Scott Miller are two of the best IWB professional development people I know. one of their main lessons is to help teachers to come up with a schema for bringing students to the board. It doesn’t appear to be difficult for teachers to do that with handing over the device to the students.

11. I simply laugh at the savings that you can get from simply using an iPad 2 as a video conferencing tool in comparison to the unbelievable amount of money that has been spent on this technology in other forms. Simply turn on Skype on the iPad 2 and away you go …

There are so many other facets and reasons that I have missed … Can you add to this list? I think you can … I just can’t see the benefits of any other setup for a classroom that even compare at this point! For me, this is all a no-brainer.
