ARCHOS GamePad Available

DENVER–(BUSINESS WIRE)–ARCHOS, announces the retail availability of the highly anticipated GamePad, a new type of tablet that combines physical gaming button controls and an ARCHOS patented mapping tool with a full AndroidTM-powered tablet experience. Bringing physical buttons and analog thumb-sticks to mobile gaming, the ARCHOS GamePad blends power with unique mapping software that allows you to link the virtual controls of any game to physical controls. A thin and light Android 4.1 Jelly Bean device, the GamePad also features full access to Google PlayTM and Google Mobile Services and is now available in Europe for 149.99€ with a North American release scheduled for early Q1 2013.

“Android device users spend more than 9 hours a month gaming on their devices and yet are not completely satisfied with the touch-screen experience”

“Android device users spend more than 9 hours a month gaming on their devices and yet are not completely satisfied with the touch-screen experience,” says Henri Crohas, Founder and CEO of ARCHOS. “We feel this area of gaming is proven and will continue to grow. With the introduction of the GamePad we are uniquely positioned to feed the demand of gamers who want a better gaming experience on a tablet.”

By combining the GamePad’s 14 physical buttons and dual analog thumb-sticks with the revolutionary ARCHOS game mapping tool (exclusive to ARCHOS), the GamePad brings the physical aspect back to the gaming experience. Adding to the experience is the 16-million-color, seven-inch, five-point capacitive, 1024 x 600 pixel screen. At only 10 mm (0.3 inch) thin and with a weight of 330g (0.7 lbs), the ARCHOS GamePad is the perfect on-the-go gaming console.

REVOLUTIONARY MAPPING TOOL

Thanks to the revolutionary ARCHOS mapping tool, even back catalog games that weren’t made for physical controls can work with the physical controls of the ARCHOS GamePad; ‘map’ any on-screen virtual control to the physical controls of the GamePad for hundreds of games within the tool or use its drag-and-drop interface to ‘map’ any game in seconds.

Check out our YouTube video showing how easy it is to use: HOW TO MAP BUTTONS

The mapping profile for each game is automatically saved so whenever that game is launched in the future, the ARCHOS game-mapping tool will automatically load the corresponding mapping profile.

Archos 101 XS: Design and Build Quality

When you first see the Archos 101 XS (XS stands for 'extra slim' by the way) it is hard to tell just what it is. The Coverboard hides the 10.1in screen and all you see is an aluminium cover with white plastic surround.

Slide, peel or twist the cover off and you'll reveal what looks very much like the recently launched Galaxy Note 10.1 from Samsung. Like the Samsung tablet, the Archos has a 10.1in screen, surrounded by a mixture of plastic and (unlike the Note) aluminium.

Archos is playing up the thinness of the tablet and on its own it measures just 8mm thick (the iPad is 9.4mm) and even with the Coverboard in place, it only comes in at 13mm. This is 1mm more than an iPad 3 with Smart Cover attached, and a whole 1cm thinner than the Asus Transformer Prime 300 with its dock attached.

Archos has done a great job of making the combination this thin. It told me that 5mm is the thinnest you can make a keyboard while maintaining that sensation of using a keyboard – hinting that Microsoft's Touch Cover solution, which is only 3mm thick, simply won't work.

The keyboard is certainly usable, and contains a number of Android-specific shortcuts, which is vital for navigating around the touch-enabled interface. I'll need more time to assess if its usable on a longer basis, but I have my doubts.

The Coverboard is also a dock, which keeps the tablet in place using magnets, which guide it into the correct position. When docked, I was able to pick up the tablet and keep the keyboard attached showing the connection is pretty sturdy.

You do need to manually pull up a kickstand (which is also magnetic) and I found this to be somewhat awkward at times.

The tablet didn't feel terrible well-built. there was no feeling of the premium you get from the iPad or indeed the extremely well-built Nexus 7. I should point out however the 101 XS I was using was a pre-production sample so these issues may be ironed out somewhat before shipping.

Archos 101 XS: Connectivity and hardware

In terms of connectivity, the Archos 101 XS comes with a decent array of ports. These include a microUSB port for charging and data transfer, mini HDMI for outputting HD video and audio to a large screen TV, a microSD card slot for expanding your storage (up to 64GB at the moment) as well as the expected headphone jack.

The connector on the bottom of the tablet, where it connects to the Coverboard, is proprietary, and is simply a redesigned USB port. The dock itself has another microUSB port on the rear to let you charge the tablet while docked.

In terms of wireless connectivity, you've got the usual pair of Wi-Fi N and Bluetooth 4.0 with the added benefit of Wi-Fi Direct letting connect with other devices around your home, like TVs, PCs or file servers.

In terms of processor power, the Archos 101 XS comes with a Texas Instruments OMAP 4470 dual-core processor clocked a 1.5 GHz, which uses smart multicore technology to create up to ten cores making it more powerful than the quad-core Tegra 3 according to Archos, which has carried out its own benchmarks in conjunction with Anandtech.

The processor is paired with 1GB of RAM and there is only one option available in terms of storage at 16GB.

The brief time I had with the tablet showed it was able to handle anything I threw at it comfortably, though more stringent test will be required when we review it fully.

In terms of battery life, Archos claim 10 hours for everyday use, 36 hours of music playback only and 7 hours of video playback. Again we will need to check this during review.

Archos 101 XS: Screen and OS

The 10.1in screen has a resolution of 1280 x 800, which is very typical for the current crop of Android tablets, with only the Asus Transformer Infinity offering anything better (and of course the iPad's Retina Display).

The Archos 101 XS uses MVA LCD technology rather than the more popular IPS technology. MVA stands for Multi-domain Vertical Alignment and is known for wide viewing angles and high contrast, but at the cost of brightness and colour reproduction.

In my brief time with the tablet, it certainly looked to have very good viewing angles and the contrast in the Inception trailer I watched, which gets very dark at times, was excellent. The resolution is obviously not as high as some tablets and for some consumers this will be an issue.

The tablet runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) which hasn't been touched by Archos. This is something I wish more manufacturers would do, but the likes of Samsung's TouchWiz and HTC's Sense have at least improved of late.

The Archos 101 XS and Google's Nexus 7 tablet

Navigating the OS is fast and responsive and Archos offers users the option of installing a number of apps when first launching the tablet. A full version of OfficeSuite Pro 6 for Android is included, which normally costs £9.60.

This is a good addition to any tablet looking to replace a laptop, offering something close to an MS Office experience on an Android tablet.

Another default app is Archos' own video player, built from the ground up in the company's Paris headquarters.

Archos has a rich history in media and it is using this to its advantage here. This video player, unlike most available on Android tablets, will play back pretty much any video codec you throw at it, according to Archos at least.

The interface is very nice and offers a carousel view of your films, along with importing film art, subtitles and basic information about the film, director and stars

Archos 101 XS: Price and availability

The Archos 101 XS will cost £299 when it goes on sale in the UK in mid-September. This is likely to be less than the cost of the Microsoft Surface tablets, though exact pricing for these has yet to be disclosed – with much wild speculation being carried out.

At first glance it offers pretty decent value, considering you get the dock and keyboard included for the price. I still have to be convinced that prolonged working on a keyboard of this type is possible – having given up on the Transformer Pad rather quickly.

Archos will also launch 97in and 8in versions of the XS tablet (known unsurprisingly as the Archos 97 XS and the Archos 80 XS) later in the year, giving customers a choice but also possibly confusing them somewhat. No pricing for these tablets have been announced.

When queried about the possibility of a Windows 8 version, the Archos spokesman didn't rule it out, simply saying that for now it was launching its Android version of its Generation 10 tablets.

We will have a full review of the Archos 101 XS within the next month.

Archos 101 XS tablet video demo

Come on guys, stop making these widescreen tablets… give us a proper 10.1 inch display… browsing the web is a pain on them as the page is too narrow if you put the display in portrait mode and you get ridiculous wide borders when in landscape mode… also makes viewing a page of sheet music a right pain as you have to scroll up while only partway down the page…

The old problem with archos used to be that for every function you needed to buy a license or additional hardware, making it very confusing how much you actually paid for a working product, so I think it’s very wise to move away from that (they did move away from that right?)

@Ex Archos That’s pretty nasty but we’ve seen it before from many (big) manufacturers, who either never update or are so damn slow it’s laughable.but seeing this runs stock android and the requirements for 4.1 are pretty well known I think it should be very easy for them to keep their promise for this tablet in this instance.

Bought an Archos "Internet Table" two years ago with a promise that it would be updated to Gingerbread "soon". Guess what. Didn’t happen. Internet Table? You ask. Yes, the screen printing on the front bezel actually said Internet Table instead of Internet Tablet. true.

Not For Publication: Mods contact me via my email for proof.

Archos 97 Android ICS tablet now available to ...

Back at the beginning of the month, we mentioned that Archos had a new inexpensive Android ICS tablet that would be launching sometime this month for $249.99. the tablet is called the Archos 97 Carbon and while we knew most everything about the lower priced tablet, one fact remained unknown. that one key fact was when you could purchase one.

Archos has announced that the 97 Carbon is available for purchase right now. you can hit up the Archos store directly and order the tablet today if you want. we already knew all the specifications and features of the tablet, but I’ll run them down again in case you missed it the first time around. the operating system is Android Ice Cream Sandwich, and the tablet has full access to the Google Play store.

Full access to the Google Play store means that there are over 600,000 different apps and games that the tablet will support along with music, movies, and a lot more. Although the tablet sells for under $250, it has an IPS 9.7-inch multitouch screen. the screen resolution is 1024 x 768, and the tablet has a 1 GHz processor with 1 GB of RAM. the tablet also features front and rear digital cameras.

Storage space includes 16 GB of internal flash, and the tablet has a microSD card slot supporting cards up to 32 GB for total 48 GB of storage possible. the 97 Carbon comes preloaded with all sorts of Google apps including the Office Suite Viewer and more. the tablet can decode full 1080p HD video and can shoot video out to a TV via HDMI output. Other features include a full-size USB port, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Shipping on the tablet is free.

The tablet, which could be the thinnest tablet yet with a 7.6mm thickness, could rival the Asus Transformer Infinity with its similar keyboard dock accessory. Next gen hardware, but the software needs improvement after mulling over the Archos 101 back in October, and increasingly frustrated with their delays, I found this gem in my local SEARS. It has a Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset, which you will probably be hearing about increasingly in 2011. a really nice device overall, but it’s not without its faults which I will summarize. First, the hardware….Hardware Pros:- Tegra 2 chipset dual-core with 512MB RAM. Bleeding edge hardware, so much that the software has not caught up, yet (see more on that, below).- MicroSD slot, which supports up to 32GB.- a full USB port. You can hook up peripheral devices to it, such as a USB keyboard.- Micro USB port (not proprietary) , for mounting to your PC. Forgot your cable and you’re at a friends house? No worries, just use any micro USB and you are in.- Front facing camera. It’s not the best, but it works.Hardware Cons:- The LCD. Yes, ironic given that this is packaged by a company known for its displays. The 1024×600 10 inch screen is essentially a netbook screen. It’s actually not bad at all when looking at it straight on, but the viewing angles are not very good. this is critical if you were planning on using this as a gaming device where you’ll be moving it around.- h264 support is limited. this is confusing to some, as technically h264 works in certain configurations. 1080p “high profile” encoded videos do not work, whereas “main profile” does work. The bottom line here is that you might find issues with certain high-def videos that will be very choppy or flat out crash the device. My understanding is that this is a limitation of the Tegra 2 chipset itself. The hardware is very impressive, overall. However, where this device loses a full point is the software that is supplied out-of-the-box. Although it’s Android based, the stock launcher is replaced with a interface called “Tap N’ Tap”, which is actually a third party vendor. I don’t particularly like the interface myself – it’s slow, buggy with a tendency to “Force Close” very often, and the Marketplace that’s been recently added is very different than the Android Marketplace you might be used to on your phone (and not in a good way). Overall, it’s just plain bad.if you are technically inclined or don’t mind thinking outside the box, there are already several alternate firmware replacements for the device that can be found by Googling “Viewsonic G Tablet xda-developers”. these mods can turn the device into something you are more familiar with, if you use an Android phone. But, keep in mind that these alterations are not supported by Viewsonic and you could void your warranty. So buyer beware. The other major problem is that Android itself is not built for tablets, yet. But version 2.3 is about to be released, which could change things considerably in the next few months. Whether or not the GTablet eventually gets an official 2.3 release, or a more Android-looking interface that is fully supported by Viewsonic is anyone’s guess at this point – so, just know what you are getting into.12/21/10 EDIT: The next official firmware slated for release this week by VS should allow the user to bypass the Tap N’ Tap homescreen, and use a more vanilla Android interface. this is a step in the right direction, imo.04/17/11 EDIT: I’ve gotten some heat for the title of “next Gen Hardware”. Remember, this was written in December – that’s an eternity in technology terms. The GPU is actually still up-to-date as of this writing, but Android devices with better screens are starting to show up (ie. the Xoom and soon the Transformer). So just keep in mind when this review was written….04/23/11 EDIT: I’m hearing reports that these new Amazon GTablets MIGHT be arriving with the latest Viewsonic firmware – this firmware adds a lockscreen, Adobe Flash and French / Spanish languages and a few other things. You can tell if you have this new firmware if you go into Settings — about Tablet and check the TapUI version — “1.2″ means the new firmware, and “1.1″ means the old firmware.if you have a “1.2″ firmware, please be careful with mods on XDA (as of this writing) as they are generally built around the “1.1″ firmware, only. Or, alternatively, you can try the few 1.2-based mods at Slatedroid (just Google “Slatedroid Gtablet 1.2″ and you’ll find them). You can downlevel your firmware from 1.2 to 1.1 – but there is a small chance that you could soft-brick your device, especially if you don’t read directions carefully – there are specific steps to take. Just be careful, and have fun with your new tablet!7/28/2011 EDIT: VS has recently stated that there will be no Honeycomb support for the GTAB. However, there are unofficial mods on both XDA and Slatedroid.com, if you are willing to risk it and void your warranty of course. and 1.2 based firmware has…

» Archos 9 Dual Core – WIN 7- LITE : A ...

The Archos 9 is in my collection since 4 day’s , and my friends, i know what I was buying after the bad reviews i read about this Tablet.

As you all know people talk really bad about the Archos 7 HT aswel..and i also have that one and with both devices i felt SCREWED , and i had to jump intoa short Study to learn how to fix those issues and with Succes..I got smarter and I understand things so much better now ,and my end opinion aboutArchos is ..Good Hardware Good Battery life Good Support and cool people at the Archos Family Fans and friends..I,m not alone trust me..i have all these

smart dev at my side now and we are like one BIG FAMILY ..

Alrighty then..now about the device:

It Runned Win 7 Starter and from the 60 gb 40 is usable and 20 is reserved for the installation files..The system runs some security center and to make the device do what i wanted,i discovered that wiping the disk and start all over again made a great difference.

You will get really pist on Windows 7 if you dont use the Touch Plugin for Chrome made byAndroid Linux Dev of Google and turns this Archos in a real tablet pc with multitouch whenbrowsing the internet..when closing the internet , one see what one misses outbecause of poor touch support by Microsoft.I bet in Win8 devices they will finally work as it should.

No the Tablet is not a BAD one , infact it’s very good if you run WINDOWS 7 LITE on itand then to be precise Windows 7 build 7100 RC1 LITE.

I created a LITE version way back with V-lite and installed it to test how things work.to Do That just put back the date to 2008-and there are tricks to make it fully genuine buti won’t learn you that , for that you must ask Uncle Google and not Aunty BING..

To be honnest , i,m happy with this tablet but before installing any software i willmake good choices not to overload this device with JUNK.

What i did not put on this thing :MS OFFICEGAMESExtra themesGadgets that use internetWeatherall the junk in Live messenger (that is CHEAP SPYWARE of MS and Companions )and things like toolbars etc that will do things on your tablet ,you are not even awair of.

Without all the crap , your Archos 9 is one wonderfull Windows Tablet with Androidfunctionallty while browsing and i would say..buy it of the hands of the unknown, that maybe should have a IPAD (Lol) for some little buck, and you will be the winner..trust your bro from Holland..

If you have any question or remark to make , let me know..If you just are someApple or MS User that Hate allong with them i will simply BAN you from ever posting a comment again on my YOUTUBE.

If you RATE my video BAD ..be a MAN a tell me why you think it’s BAD so we can thinkabout your opinion..don’t just HATE and HIT the road..cause KARMA will alway’s knowwhere to find you..

To my friends worldwide i wanna Say : One love and Bless for you and your familyand subscribe if you like my video’s and please RATE this Video THUMBS UP @!Thanks TO you
