SAMAL ISLAND, DAVAO DEL NORTE — Quality content that is more accessible to customers will drive sales for computer manufacturers and further increase PC penetration rates, according to a top local official of Taiwanese firm Acer.
“Compared to a decade ago, the Philippines now enjoys a more reliable Internet connectivity even in once remote provinces, thanks to 3G dongles. given that, access to content is the next growth driver for PC sales,” said Acer Philippines general manager Manuel Wong.
Worldwide, Acer ranks as the third largest company for PC shipments and the second largest in terms of notebook shipments. In the Philippines, Acer has the biggest market share in PC sales, said Wong.
Content — whether from a PC, desktop, tablet, or smartphone—should be easy to access. this is where compatibility across different platforms and brands comes in, said Wong.
Cloud storage is also key to access content across different platforms. for this, Acer offers a 2-gigabyte free storage for its customers.
Data—in the form of documents, audio, and video—can be stored on Acer’s “cloud” so users can access and share it on their devices. a caveat though is that this this is only for a limited time, since content that is used all the time are better stored and protected in servers.
Added Wong: “It all boils down to customer satisfaction and customers are happy when vendors make it is easy for them to dump, access and share content.‘
But before this, quality content should be made available for specific purposes such as in education. “Without content, student tablets will have no purpose—they will just spend time on Facebook or any social media site,” said Wong.

In its bid to maintain its leadership in the industry, Wong said that the company has been introducing PC models with pioneering features such as cloud support, touch interface, and enough battery life to run consumer and business applications smoothly.
The company’s most latest product is its Windows 7-powered Iconia tablet PC.
A strong after-sales support is also important to retain and grow customers, according to Wong.
Just this month, Acer opened two sales support and customer service centers in the cities of Davao and Cebu, one of the fast-growing urban markets for PCs. the company offers a warranty and free service of labor and parts three years after product purchase.
“The good thing about low PC penetration in the country, pegged at around 29 percent, is there is a huge opportunity to grow the market. the equation is simple: consumers need a good product and affordable, reliable service,” said Wong.
Building a strong relationship to consumers is paramount in Acer’s growth strategy given that 60 percent of its customers in the country are consumers, followed only by 40 percent commercial and business clients.
In terms of connectivity, Wong said that he favors the development of Long Term Evolution (LTE) in the country, following other major countries seeing the promise of the technology for the future.
