Good news for RIM fans: RIM unveils the 4G LTE ...

Suddenly RIM is in the news again, and this time it’s not about financial troubles or product delays to 2013.

Instead, the Canadian manufacturer announced the introduction of its new 4G LTE BlackBerry Playbook, along with the specifications of the 4G LTE 7-inch tablet aimed to bring stability to a company that’s facing difficult financial problems. When’s it coming and where?

The RIM 4G LTE BlackBerry Playbook has a 7-inch display with a 1024×600 resolution, packing a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4G LTE connectivity as well as HSPA+ support, 32GB of built-in memory, a 5MP rear facing camera with 1080p video recording, a 3MP front facing camera, GPS navigation, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, micro USB port, micro HDMI port, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, HTML5 browser support with Adobe Flash 11.2 support, H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, VP, WMV 9 video playback as well as stereo speakers and microphones. BlackBerry PlayBook OS is running as the operating system of choice. At the moment, RIM’s website lists it only for Canada’s Rogers Wireless, but there is the possibility of other carriers to offer it, or for RIM to offer it directly through their online shop. Pricing is unknown at the moment, but it should be higher than the Wi-Fi only, 32GB BlackBerry Playbook.

The 4G LTE BlackBerry Playbook will debut in Canada on select carriers starting August 9, but additional models with cellular connectivity adapted to the carrier demands will arrive in the United States as well as Europe, South Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, according to RIM’s BlackBerry Blog.

Where the Wi-Fi-only BlackBerry Playbook differs is in processing power, with a 1GHz dual-core processor, the lack of LTE and HSPA+ connectivity and different built-in memory size. The Wi-Fi version comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB of internal storage, unlike the Cellular+Wi-Fi BlackBerry Playbook which only comes with 32GB of built-in memory. The listed weight for the Wi-Fi BlackBerry Playbook is 425 grams. RIM’s online shop lists the BlackBerry Playbook 16GB version at $199.99, the 32GB for $249.99 and the 64GB variant for $299.99.

The most obvious opponent to the RIM 4G LTE BlackBerry Playbook is the Google Nexus 7, which like the BlackBerry Playbook has a 7” display, but it differs in resolution, with a higher one at 1280×800, has a quad-core nVidia Tegra 3 processor, internal storage is limited to 8 or 16GB, doesn’t come with cellular connectivity, be it 4G LTE or HSPA+ and is lighter at 340 grams. The Google Nexus 7 is listed at $199 for the 8GB version and $249 for the 16GB variant, which is more expensive than the Wi-Fi only BlackBerry Playbook, but comes with better specifications than it.

RIM stock prices haven’t changed significantly after the announcement, despite the 4G LTE model being the first new model announced after CEO Thorsten Heins stated that BlackBerry OS 10 will be released along with new products in 2013. RIM’s stock price at the time of writing this article is $7.17 per share, marginally better than yesterday’s price of $7.12 at stock market closing time.

The question after RIM’s announcement is this: will it help the company recover after the falling stock prices? RIM launched a new tablet today, specification-wise, by adding a different CPU and LTE connectivity and by the looks of it seems to have the Google Nexus 7 beat just because it has LTE and HSPA+ support, but will it beat it on popularity?

Toshiba Developing Windows 8 Convertible Tablet

While it was expected that Windows 8 would be the star attraction of Computex 2012, what did come as a surprise was the number of convertible tablets that manufacturers put up on display. Toshiba also has a convertible tablet to show off (predictably running Windows 8), joining others such as Acer, Asus, and Samsung.

Toshiba seems to be a little more secretive of its device. it is in no mood to reveal what is inside, though it resembles the Transformer Prime, in being attachable to a separate keyboard. The keyboard in turn houses a separate battery unit while also offering three USB ports as well as an HDMI slot. The keyboard is therefore not only serving as an input device but also a power source and connectivity hub.

Another tablet Toshiba displayed comes with a keyboard that is not removable but instead can be slid beneath the display. This reminds us of the Asus Eee Pad Slider and while the concept is good, the keyboard can add to the weight when the device is used purely in tablet mode.

However, while the device Toshiba introduced does not break any new ground, the company, for its part, said: “At this point, we will not be providing any additional information or specs on these products.”

Acer announces Iconia W700, W510 Windows 8 tablets

With Computex 2012 just around the corner, we’re expecting manufacturers to sport their very own Windows 8 powered tablets in the said event. But one company has an itch to scratch and is not willing to wait for Computex 2012 to do so.

Following the launch of Microsoft’s Windows 8 Release Preview, Acer has introduced not one but two of their very first Windows 8-powered tablets in the form of Iconia W700 and Iconia W510 in an event held at Taipei.

The Iconia W700 sports a netbook-size screen which is measured at 11.6”. But the display of this slate is nothing like that of a netbook as it features full HD 1920 x 1080 screen resolution. Assuming that my below average math skills hasn’t failed me yet, that equates to a crisp 259ppi pixel density. This tablet has all sorts of ports for user’s connectivity needs.

Apart from the usual audio and charging port, the W700 is also equipped with three USB 3.0 ports, Thunderbolt port and Micro-HDMI port. what is a bit disappointing with this is that the dock only serves as a holder for the tablet and that users will need an external keyboard.

Next is its smaller but still relatively big sibling the W510. This tablet boasts a 10.1” 1080p IPS display. This tablet doesn’t have the several different ports that the W700 has. But its advantage over the latter is that its dock has a keyboard and doubles as a battery, extending its juice for up to 18 hours. According to source this tablet will cost around $599 – $799 when made available.

Stick around as we’ll give you further details about these promising tablets and other devices when we attend the Computex 2012.

ASUS Transformer Book hands-on – SlashGear

By now you’re probably thinking, “I want a notebook/tablet hybrid, but I don’t want to be crippled by an Atom processor to get work done.” ASUS is way ahead of you on this one. In addition to the Tablet 600 and 810, the company has announced a new Transformer Book line. Again, it’s the same concept, but with larger screens and some more horsepower for those who really need the extra muscle.

If you’re looking for something a little smaller or more compact, these aren’t the products for you. the Book line will feature 11.6-inch, 13.3-inch, and 14-inch screens, all running full HD 1080p IPs panels with support for multitouch. the entire line will be running Intel’s mobile Ivy Bridge platforms, specifically some ULV Core i3, i5 or i7 chips. ASUS is also promising discrete graphics instead of the integrated HD 4000 GPU, as well as SSD and HDD options.

USB 3.0 connectivity will also be onboard, as well as 4GB of RAM. a five megapixel camera will serve as the primary camera, plus an “HD” webcam on the front for video calls. ASUS isn’t saying what kind of battery life we can expect from the range, and we imagine its something the company is still trying to figure out too, but if it’s anything like the rest of the Transformer range, expect batteries in both the dock and main tablet. Once again, there’s no word on pricing or availability.

BlackBerry CEO says LTE PlayBook is coming – ...

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins made it clear at BlackBerry World that the LTE PlayBook tablet is coming later this year. this announcement is no surprise, yet it is confirmation of what we knew was coming. A BlackBerry PlayBook rocking 4G connectivity has been spied at FCC in the past hinting it was close to coming to market.

With confirmation that the tablet is on its way, we still don’t know a firm launch date. Heins would only say, “later this year.” the bigger question now is with every other version of the PlayBook having failed at anything resembling a normal price, why does RIM think a 4G LTE version will do well?

RIM apparently believes that BlackBerry 10 will solve some of the problems the tablet had. the company is reportedly happy with the hardware, and the software seems to be lacking point. Would a PlayBook tablet with 4G LTE support BlackBerry 10 interest you? I think unless the tablet was very cheap most people will still opt for the iPad.

Sony Confirms The Xperia Sola, Apple iPad 3 ...

The Sony Xperia Pepper is finally official. Officially named as the Sony Xperia Sola, it fits right in between the Xperia P and the Xperia U. The Xperia Sola features a 3.7 inch reality display, which is powered by a dual core processor and a NovaThor chipset. So what makes this cell phone so special? The Xperia Sola is the first phone to feature Sony’s new technology called “floating touch”. This new technology allows the user to hover his/her finger over the screen, acting as a cursor. Currently this is feature will be limited to the browser only, however Sony has promised to release apps exploiting this feature and also promised to make it open source for developers. Sony assured that it will release software updates containing apps that utilize this new technology.

Looking at other features of the Sola, we have a 3.7 inch screen with a resolution of 480×854 pixels. The screen employs Sony’s trademark BRAVIA technology. The Xperia Sola also has a scratch resistant glass and a 5MP camera capable of 720p video recording. The phone also boasts of stereo speakers with xLOUD technology. It has NFC connectivity with the inclusion of two Smart tags. These tags can be customized with a maximum of 10 commands, which are executed when the phone is pressed against them. The phone is scheduled to release in Q2, but there are not details of the pricing available as of now.

In other news, Apple’s new iPad 3 graphics processor has finally been benchmarked. The device’s GLBenchmark 2.1 scores put it well ahead of any other device out there. This confirms the much hyped specs of the iPad 3, and ends most of the mystery surrounding the quad core graphics of the new iPad. The underlying chip responsible for the ground breaking graphics is believed to be the PowerVR SGX543 MP4 GPU.

The iPad 3 scored almost 16,000 points on the test (15,924 to be exact) which is 1.5 times that of its predecessor, the iPad 2, which follows at a distant second. The iPad 2 is followed by the iPhone 4S which also uses the same GPU as the former. following the iPhone 4S are two are two of Android’s best tablets; the Acer Iconia Tab A510 and the Asus Transformer Prime TF201. Although NVIDIA has shot down Apple’s claim that the new iPad’s performance is four times better than the Tegra 3, these benchmark scores are clearly indicative of at least a twofold bump in performance. This raises exciting prospects for the Series 6 line of GPUs from PowerVR (the iPad 3 uses the Series 5). However, the Series 6 line is not expected till next year, so the iPad 3 will remain the leader at least for now.

Toshiba Thrive Ice Cream Sandwich Release Date ...

The Toshiba Thrive Android tablet had a mixed welcome last year. Android tablets are split into two categories with one of them trying to imitate the iPad and go for thin and sleek design. the other group goes for sheer power and connectivity and this is where the Thrive entered the market.

The tablet did fair pretty well against some of the best competitors as you can see in our little Versus between the Thrive and the Transformer. It seems that the gods of update smile upon us as the Toshiba Thrive Ice Cream Sandwich release date has been recently hinted by the manufacturer.

Toshiba announced their plans to release Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich for their 10 inch Thrive Android tablet sometime this spring.

When asked about their schedule for the Android 4 ICS update for the Toshiba Thrive, Toshiba USA was quick to reply. the tablet is running Android 3 Honeycomb now and this update would indeed breathe some new life into the tablet.

Toshiba Thrive Ice Cream Sandwich Release Date Scheduled For Spring 2012 (Android 4 ICS)

Owners of the OG Thrive can rejoice as this could mean that the update can hit anytime now. However, spring is a little bit vague so the update could hit as late as April or may.

The update is for the 10-inch version of the tablet and the manufacturer did not state any plans yet for updating the Toshiba Thrive 7.

With the two tablets being very similar in specifications, we could see the update roll out for both of them at the same time. both come with the Tegra 2 processor and 1GB of RAM as well as Honeycomb out of the box. For this however, we will have to wait a little.

If you are the owner of any of the two, make sure to keep an eye out for the ICS update!

Samsung, Telstra launch Australia's first 4G ...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G is Australia’s first 4G-capable tablet, joining the 4G USB modem and the HTC Velocity 4G smartphone as the first products to work on Telstra’s 4G network.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G preview Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 review HTC Velocity 4G review

Available in Telstra stores from today, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G is just the third product to work on Telstra’s 4G network. the telco released the 4G USB modem in October last year and then followed that up with the HTC Velocity 4G Android smartphone last month.

Telstra says the Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G will provide typical download speeds of between 2 megabits per second (Mbps) and 40Mbps, and typical upload speeds of between 1Mbps and 10Mbps, provided consumers are in a 4G coverage zone. like the Velocity 4G smartphone, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G features dual channel HSPA+ connectivity, making it faster than most phones and tablets even when not used in a 4G coverage zone. the 4G network used by Telstra is best described as an LTE enablement of its next G network. it runs on the LTE 1800MHz network band but “switches across” to the next G network when 4G coverage is not available.

“In 4G coverage areas the Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G can offer speeds typically reserved for the office which will make it hugely popular with businesses too, said Warwick Bray, executive director, Telstra Mobile. “Customers will be able to access email, cloud-hosted applications and documents without the need for a bulky laptop and it’s perfect for sharing multimedia content on client visits.”

Telstra’s 4G coverage is currently available in all eight capital cities (5km from GPO) and their respective airports in Australia, along with 80 regional and metropolitan centres (3km from city centre).

4G capabilities aside, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G has an 8.9in capacitive touchscreen and has an impressive physical design — it measures just 8.6 millimetres thick and weighs only 470g, making it both thinner and lighter than the iPad 2. Samsung says the Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G’s ultra-thin form factor and lightweight design are ideal for business users who frequently travel.

“Samsung is delighted to partner with Telstra to offer consumers Australia’s first 4G tablet device, said Tyler McGee, Samsung’s vice president of telecommunications. “We know speed is increasingly important to Australians as is portability and a sleek, stylish form factor, both of which the Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G offers in spades.”

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, has a capacitive PLS TFT display with a 1280×800 resolution and features Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity. the Galaxy Tab 8.9 also has a 3 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front camera, and is capable of playing back 1080p HD video.

Disappointingly, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G runs the outdated Android 3.2 “Honeycomb” operating system, though Samsung has promised an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade “in the future”.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G will come in 16GB ($720) and 32GB ($840) variants, with the former available in Telstra stores from today. Telstra says the 32GB model will “launch shortly”.

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 4G will be available on four Telstra data+tablet plans over 24 months, starting from $49 per month.
