Verizon Wireless and Google announce possible ...

Verizon Wireless and Google are pairing up to produce a tablet they think may be enough to take down the Apple iPad. Best of all the early rumor is that this will be an Android tablet. It is probably not going to be the first Android tablet to hit the market this year, but the Verizon pairing with Google makes it sound like the best by reputation alone.

The move makes perfect sense for each company as Google is the go to for anything on the web now and always looking to expand their reach, and Verizon is losing business to AT&T thanks to their tie-in to Apple. What is best of all for consumers is that this is not a joke or speculation. Lowell McAdam, Verizon chief executive, confirmed it all to the Wall Street Journal on May 12, 2010.

There are no concrete specs on this new iPad killer – or even a soft release date yet, but they promise this is going to be a true competitor with the iPad, and of course they maintain it will be better as well. The Google tie in is key to the new tablet because the Google archives are so monstrous that they provide the most possible options for material to put on their tablet possible. More options makes for a better user experience.

Google and Verizon already have a strong working relationship as Google’s Android technology is already present on Verizon phones. By placing that Android technology or Chrome OS on the tablet, the making for a killer machine are there. The Android app store is widely considered the best around by many techies which is another nice hook.

If they go Chrome OS route, the advantage is having a complete operating system and cloud storage as opposed to having download and then store apps directly on the tablet which is attractive to a certain degree. The smart money right now though is on the Android technology because it is better established and the Android App store is a draw for consumers already.

While it would be nice if either Verizon or Google would comment on some of the specifics rather than just that they do have this project underway it would be nice. The earliest speculation is that they will likely push hard to deliver in time to take advantage of the holiday season, but that may be a stretch. All that is known for sure is that Verizon Wireless and Google work great together and rarely rush anything out or disappoint.

Why Owning An Android Tablet Is Beneficial

Tablet PCs are the newest arrival in the technology market, and Google’s Android operating system has been a driving force in it. Most tablets in the tablet market are pre-installed with the Android operating system. There are multiple reasons as to why an Android tablet is beneficial and preferable to other tablets in the market; here are just a few main reasons:

1. The first reason why the Android OS is considered one of the top is because it is open source. This means that the software itself allows users to customize it and configure the software to work in a particular way that suits them. As long as the users download applications that are compatible with the Android system, everything should operate flawlessly.

2. The second aspect is probably one that is highly considered by people who buy the tablets which is the low price. Android tablets are inexpensive compared to other tablets such as Apple’s iPad. There are lots of factors that go into the price, and one of them is the OS, and Androids is cheap, open, and easy to use. Android tablets aren’t made for everyone, they are made for you.

3. The specs on Android tablets are very high. The memory on the tablet is expandable to 32 gigabytes even with an initial storage space of 8 gigabytes. Some of the other features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, 3G capabilities, and GPS. These features are creating a standard for what sales in a market for tablets. These are included in all tablets.

4. Android Tablets are simple to sync. USB ports and micro SD chips allow Android to be synced and backed up easily with the use of any PC. It is easy to save pictures and videos or sync music and contacts with Android tablets. No other software is needed, just plug and play.

5. The tablets have a lot impressive capabilities. The tablets are made to recognize when a person is using an on-screen keyboard or a stylus. It is amazing how accurate and precise the calibration is on the tablet, it picks up your handwriting, making it almost identically to writing on a piece of paper. These tablets are easy to use for taking notes, typing blogs, and sending e-mails.

6. The tablet’s adaptability is the final noteworthy aspect of the tablet. The tablets running on Android Operating Systems have many uses and can serve multiple purposes to one person. Students can use Android tablets for completing home work and reports, consumers can use the tablets to purchase goods and services, a writer can use it to write blogs and articles, and a business professional can use it to create presentations and sell products. Of course, one person can always use it for all the purposes, and that is what Android tablets worthy of a purchase.

These are a list of the top six aspects that are worth mentioning about the Android tablets, but certainly there are more than just six. The android developers are always finding ways to improve the software, which in turn improves their products altogether. They are becoming quicker, easier, and more flexible for the consumers to use. Increased Android development is the reason it remains one of the top competitors in both the tablet and mobile phone markets.

RIM Tablet PC Ten Flaw

RIM, officially launched the PlayBook Tablet PC, tablet PC in the market and Apple iPad, and other computer manufacturers under a higher flat-panel products. Using a 7-inch touch screen PlayBook, Wi-Fi wireless connectivity and other high-end dual-core processor configurations. According to RIM’s official statement, PlayBook will be on sale early next year.

However, the possibility of Apple iPad PlayBook and other computer makers of flat panel products, but the contest in an invincible position is another matter entirely. At first glance, it seems a product that Apple iPad competent challenger’s role, but a careful look will find the paragraph after the Tablet PC also has inherent disadvantages. As individual consumers and business users in the market to find more suitable for their own similar products, PlayBook fate will likely end in failure. The following lists the top ten flaw PlayBook Tablet PC:

1. Screen size

PlayBook used 7-inch screen but arouse people’s questions. Consumers like Apple iPad 9.7 inch display, which is very difficult to be changed within a short time. When people iPad when compared with the PlayBook will find both work and play in the big screen more expressive. And this will only give PlayBook adversely affect sales.

2. Customers location ambiguity

PlayBook customer base in the end is an individual consumer or business users, RIM has not given a clear positioning. Although the company said, PlayBook major customers or business users, but PlayBook has a strong image processing and entertainment features, business users do not want to give their employees the best configuration so that a tablet PC. RIM PlayBook next step is to clear the target audience, then efforts to develop the customer market.

3. To be a clear marketing strategy

Comprehensive description of the functions in the video PlayBook, RIM did not set out to consumers with the functional advantages of the product. This video is to introduce the use of consumer-oriented feature begins, but to introduce the features of concern to the end business users. This in itself makes consumers feel confused. The video did not catch the actual characteristics of the product highlights. Unless RIM marketing strategy to improve its vague, or hard to believe PlayBook in the tablet PC market success.

4. The lack of 3G functionality

RIM said the current lack of 3G functionality PlayBook, but will launch with 3G capabilities in the future of PlayBook products. This is such a big fault. If RIM really lock the customer base for enterprise users, then the 3G feature is indispensable. This will only PlayBook RIM lost another major selling point. RIM needs to reconsider its 3G strategy. Otherwise PlayBook not yet added to our already lost in the starting line.

5. RIM itself is yet to be recognized

RIM itself is a successful manufacturer of smart phones. But until recently to bring comfort to the user in terms of product experience, the company has done or has been lacking. In fact, touch-screen smartphone market, RIM introduced Storm2 has been widely regarded as the mainstream mobile phone manufacturers mobile phone launched one of the worst. RIM needs to prove himself by PlayBook. RIM can not be achieved if the PlayBook self-redemption, potential buyers will soon be forgotten.

6. Browser performance has been questioned

Over the years, RIM’s browser performance has not the satisfaction of users. When the BlackBerry Internet web browsing is difficult to satisfaction of users. RIM promises PlayBook browsing experience will be greatly improved, but just not enough to make verbal commitments. PlayBook performance of the browser needs to become the industry’s trying to copy the object, this is the consumers expect RIM to bring its experience.

7. Related software development lags behind

Users want the product through its purchase from third-party software installed to improve product performance. But for RIM, it seems to be a problem, because over the years the company has relationships with software developers is very harmonious. RIM needs a range of software tailored for PlayBook, or a product that will not last long favored by the users.

8. Market timing wrong

RIM chose to PlayBook on sale early next year, which itself is a decision-making errors. This would not only take full advantage of its competitors given the Christmas holiday shopping season opportunity to hype the product, and second-generation iPad will also be on sale next year, which makes PlayBook will be in a very difficult situation. Most analysts believe that the second generation of Apple iPad are likely to be on sale next year. Once PlayBook and time to market for second-generation iPad too close, will greatly affect the PlayBook sales.

9. Cius from Cisco faces the challenge of Tablet PC

If RIM’s customer base will eventually PlayBook positioning for enterprise users, then, the company will find that Cisco Cius Tablet PC will face serious challenges. Cisco introduced Cius Tablet PC with Android OS operating system and integration with the current structure of Cisco Systems. This is the first to locate customers Tablet PC for business users, and is likely to go on sale early next year. Just from the outside, Cisco Cius enough to attract the attention of consumers. Thus, RIM’s PlayBook will start with Cisco Cius a desperate contest.

10. IPad’s influence is everywhere

We must not forget that Apple still sell very fire iPad. With the Christmas shopping season PlayBook fade from view, the majority of consumers still choose Apple iPad products. Apple iPad’s influence is everywhere. Apple to open up like this out of the tablet PC market based on the RIM and other Tablet PC manufacturers, is not that good news.

Nearly half of US consumers say they don’t ...

  • Vodafone: Ofcom has ‘careless disregard’ for consumers
  • Everything everywhere delighted with Ofcom’s 4G decision
  • Everything everywhere gets 4G go ahead

Ofcom may have given the green light to Everything Everywhere’s 4G plans for the UK, but a lot of people think the technology is unnecessary.

In a study of 3,000 US consumers, nearly half say they don’t need 4G LTE. though considering more than a quarter of all respondents think all 4G technologies are the same, maybe it’s worth taking these results with a pinch of salt.

Piper Jaffray carried out the study. Its analyst Christopher M. Larsen published the paper.

The study found 47 per cent of respondents said they didn’t need 4G LTE, while 26 per cent thought all 4G technologies were the same. Only 15 per cent said they thought 4G LTE was the best 4G wireless technology.

The study also found that consumers aren’t fussed about which operator has the best 4G LTE network.

4G in the UK

Ofcom recently said it was ok for Everything everywhere to roll out its 4G network in the UK, much to the annoyance of the other networks. O2, Vodafone and three will have to wait until the spectrum auction at the end of the year before they can deploy their own 4G networks.

Apple’s latest iPad is equipped for 4G in certain markets, though not the UK or Australia, despite the company’s marketing blurb. It was subsequently forced to stop labelling it as ’4G’ everywhere in the world.

The iPhone 5 is expected to be announced on September 12, with many thinking it could be 4G-enabled as well.

Samsung, Asus Gains Help Keep Tablet Market ...

Tablets remain popular with consumers, and continue to grow at a healthy rate — and it’s not just Apple that owns the market any more. New figures from market-research firm IDC show two competitors finally emerging from the string of Android failures to grow at an even faster rate than Apple.

All told, nearly 25 million tablets shipped worldwide in the second quarter 2012, a 66% increase over the 15 million sold in the second quarter of 2011. Apple still owned the roost, with 17 million units sold and 84.3% year-over-year growth. All told, it held 68.2% of the market, up from 61.5% at the same time last year.

But Samsung and Asus are coming on strong with good yearly growth, plus the emergence of the Kindle fire is also stirring things up. Samsung sales rose 117.6% year-over-year to 2.4 million units, while Asus jumped 115.5% to 855,000. Amazon entered the fray this year with 1.2 million Kindle Fires sold for 5% market share.

The big losers? Pretty much everyone else. Acer plunged 38.7% year-over-year, and the Other category, which is pretty much all of the Android competitors, fell 16.4%. that number is a bit deceiving. although the Other category went from 3.6 million to 3.0 million, because of the growth of the market, its market share was halved, from 24.4% to 12.3%.

Consumers Control the Tablet Market

So begins the inevitable shakeout that every market goes through as it matures. Bob O’Donnell, program vice president for clients and displays at IDC, said more than 80% of the market is still consumer, and even many business use cases are people bringing their own device to work.

“The commercial business is growing but from a small base. there are very few examples of companies that bought large numbers for employees. most are still experimenting with it,” he said.

The enterprise is still trying to figure out where and how to use tablets beyond simply giving employees something they want. “They are asking what to do with it. What do they put on it? Do they stop giving staff a notebook? Do they buy it in addition to a notebook when they have barely enough money to keep notebooks refreshed?” he said. he notes many companies still have not rolled out Windows 7 laptops; Windows XP holds a market share in the 40% range, much of that in businesses.

The growth of Samsung and Asus helps keep the overall market growing since they bring their own special offerings. Asus gives you the option of keyboards, Samsung has the Galaxy Tab and Note. O’Donnell attributes a little of this success to “ABA – anything but Apple,” but Apple still owns the market.

O’Donnell expects Q3 to be relatively moderate in the U.S. but Q4 could be huge because the expected smaller-scale Apple iPad, a new Kindle Fire, a new Barnes & Noble Nook and the wildcard, Windows RT tablets.

The iPad Mini could be a game-changer. “If Apple hits the price point we’re thinking, around $249, it will make it extraordinarily difficult for the other guys, especially in the U.S. because of the preference for Apple in the U.S.,” he said.

Half Of TV Viewers Thought The Samsung Galaxy Tab ...

It seems that making your latest product look exactly like the market leader isn’t always the fastest route to success. As Samsung found when it aired its first commercial for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, the device is so similar to the iPad that half of TV viewers thought it was an Apple product. Only 16% realized it was made by Samsung.

That’s according to the latest internal Samsung document to surface this week, which suggests the Korean company’s Galaxy Tab was so closely designed to the iPad, that it had a hard time differentiating it, and making consumers realize it wasn’t an Apple product.

The report, which was submitted as evidence in the Apple versus Samsung trial this week, reads:

Given Apple’s already strong position in the tablet category, it is critical that attribution of [Galaxy] Tab communications improve and that communication works to differentiate Tab from iPad.

The report also notes that only 11% of customers “are aware of and can link the Galaxy Tab back to Samsung, while 65% of consumers are aware and can link the iPad back to Apple.”

Samsung blames a “lack of awareness of the product” for these figures, and explains that “TV advertising has had minimal impact primarily because of misattribution.”

Maybe designing the Galaxy Tab to look like the iPad wasn’t such a good idea, then.

Acer does not expect ‘explosive ...

Taiwanese PC maker Acer, revising its estimates, does not expect “explosive growth” for Windows 8 devices when the Microsoft operating system launches in October, with its company CEO citing a lack of consumer interest as one of the reasons.

“We are still waiting for the signal of the consumers’ enthusiasm,” said Acer CEO J.T. Wang during an earnings call on Friday.

Acer, now the world’s third largest PC vendor, originally expected high growth for the company in this year’s second half, with Windows 8 helping to usher in an array of new notebooks and tablet devices to the market.

But due to weakening global economic conditions, along with the uncertainty of the Windows ecosystem, Wang said it is more realistic for the company to expect “medium growth.”

“We see that a lot of PC brand companies and also the channels have a cautious attitude,” he said. “Although everyone is preparing for the Windows 8 launch, but still there is a lot of reservation, and so we do not see the momentum for very explosive growth has been accumulated.”

Wang’s comments about the uncertainty of the Windows ecosystem likely refers to his remarks made earlier this month when he opposed Microsoft selling its own Windows 8 tablet device. Called the “Surface”, Microsoft’s new device breaks away from the company’s decades-long practice of relying on its PC vendor partners to push the Windows OS. Instead, Microsoft’s Surface tablet will directly compete with rival products from Acer and other PC makers in the industry.

During Friday’s conference call, Acer’s CEO also seemed to suggest the company could change its plans for products built for Window RT, a version of Windows 8 designed for devices with ARM-based processors.

“Our original plan is to introduce RT early next year. We have some projects ongoing. but we have to see what happened in the overall ecosystem,” he said.

Wang also said without elaborating that Acer had to wait for Microsoft’s final decision on the selling price of its Windows RT tablet. recent reports state that the Windows RT version of Microsoft’s Surface tablet will be priced at $199.

Acer’s CEO made the comments as the company reported profit growth for this year’s second quarter, one year after the PC maker posted a major quarterly loss.

For the second quarter ended on June 30, Acer’s net profit reached NT$56 million (US$1.87 million), an increase of over 100 percent from the near NT$6.8 billion loss the company reported in the same period a year ago.

Revenues for the quarter reached NT$110.6 billion, up 8.3 percent year-over-year. For the next quarter, revenues will remain flat as the company transitions toward launching Windows 8 devices in October, the company said.

“Now a lot of operations are already back to normal,” Wang said. “And we will be able to deal with the industry challenges.”

Acer does not expect ‘explosive growth’ for Windows 8 later this year
