Insanity Works – Random Tangent – ...

I have exciting news! Ten days ago I ordered the Lenovo ThinkPad X201 Tablet PC from the Lenovo Australia website and, if all goes well, I should receive it in another ten days.

[Source: Engadget]

So, yes, more than three years after I first blogged about wanting a tablet PC, I am finally about to get one :)

But Wait…Weren’t you getting a Fujitsu?

Yes, I was.

I did, however, say in my last tablet PC post that the Lenovo X210t was “still my #1 choice if I could afford it”. and, as it turned out, thanks to a massive sale at the Lenovo Australia website I could.

In fact, I ended up getting a system worth $5,400 for only $3,200! :)

When Will you Get It?

Towards the end of the month.

It was shipped from the Lenovo plant in Shenzhen on the 13th and will take about 10 business days to arrive. I don’t yet have its tracking number – the Lenovo store site takes a frustrating couple of days to get updated – but I’m guessing it’ll get to me on the 28th.

The funny thing is, there were two other items in my order: a Bluetooth mouse and an extended warranty. Both will get to me before my tablet PC does.

I should get the mouse tomorrow, in fact, because it shipped separately a day before the tablet PC and packages under 5kg take only 4 business for shipping. and I already have the extended warranty because I got a confirmation e-mail from Lenovo telling me that it had been processed.

Oh, and to make it even harder for me to be patient, I even know the computer’s serial number because it was included in the extended warranty e-mail!

Actually, I shouldn’t complain. There’s a global shortage of Intel Core i5 and i7 processors so, when I placed the order about 10 days ago, the website said the tablet PC would ship from the plant “within 4 weeks”. I’m just thrilled that it shipped from the plant 8 days after I placed my order and not 28 days after!

There is one glimmer of hope, though: the tablet PC itself weights under 3kg so, if I’m lucky, the entire shipped package will weigh less than 5kg. if that’s the case then shipping will take 4 business days and I could get it as early as the 18th! I’ll find for sure tomorrow because that’s when the order tracking page on the Lenovo website will most likely get updated.

New iPad’s battery life (nearly) the same as ...

It took the better part of my day to get to that 10 percent point. Damn long-lasting tablets.

(Credit:Eric Franklin/CNET)

Over the last couple of days I’ve run CNET’stablet battery drain test on both the new iPad and the iPad 2. TheiPad 2′s battery life hadn’t been tested since iOS 4.3, so while my focus was on evaluating the new iPad’s battery, this was also an opportunity to see if iOS 5.1 brought any battery life improvements over 4.3.

The results the results speak for themselves, but if you need further explanation, continue reading after the chart.

Movie battery life (in hours)12.814.211.99.615.3

How we tested battery lifeWe evaluated battery life the same way we do for all tablets: by continually running a movie file on the iPad until its battery dies.

We set each tablet to Airplane mode and adjusted its respective brightnesses to 150 candelas per square meter (cd/m2) or as close to that number as possible. for each iPad, that’s a bit lower than the halfway mark on the brightness scale.

We ran the 720p iPad version of “Toy story 3.” on the Transformer Prime, we ran a 720p version of “Toy story 3.” the new iPad also supports 1080p playback of movies, but we’ve yet to run the battery test with a movie file at that resolution.

On the iPads, we ran the movie through the Videos app; for the Prime, we used the movie player app mVideoPlayer, as it provides a much-needed repeat video function that not all nativeAndroid movie players include.

AnalysisWhile the new iPad drained faster than the iPad 2, its 12.8 hours of battery life is still the second-highest result we’ve seen on a tablet using a single battery. Even compared with the Transformer Prime with its battery-embedded keyboard, the iPad lasted only 3 hours less. Even more impressive was that it achieved this running at that incredibly impressive 2,048×1,536-pixel resolution.

Looking at the iPad 2 results, we also saw evidence that Apple made some very meaningful battery optimizations going from version 4.3 to 5.1 of its OS. And although the iPad 2 got 1.4 hours more juice when watching a movie, nearly 13 hours of continuous 720p playback is nothing to thumb your nose at. That gets you an entire season of “Game of Thrones,” with enough leftover power to squeeze in a couple “The Walking Dead” episodes as well. That’s a lot of good-looking entertainment you can consume on just one charge.

We will follow up soon with more iPad battery life results, including Wi-Fi-, 4G, and 1080p tests. also, check out our full tablet battery life list for more comparisons.
