Dell Streak 7 Review:

Dell is renowned for making computers of the highest quality and is a huge player in the computer market, but there are certainly bigger players in the tablet market. Dell’s Streak 7 is an enlarged version of the Streak 5, and it promises a good load of features. Dell promises to bring its computing technology and reliability to the tablets. Does it stand up to the quality that we’ve all known Dell for? Does it deliver all that it promises? We’ll have a closer look and bring you the facts.

Hardware:

The design of the Streak 7 is much like the Streak 5, only larger. the Dell Streak 7, as the name suggests, has a 7 inch screen. the size is decent, and one can hold it in one hand. the design is mostly plastic, and there are 3 capacitative buttons. the back of the device is patterned and makes for a good grip. overall, the device looks simple and stylish. on the left side of the tablet, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack. on the right, you would find the slots for the SIM card and the SD card. you also have two speakers, on both the edges. on the top you have the volume rocker and the power button. One gets a feeling that Dell built this to be used in the landscape mode, rather than in the portrait mode, seeing the alignment of the buttons. you also get corning gorilla glass protection for the screen which ensures it is scratchproof. overall, the build quality is good. it isn’t the best build quality we’ve seen, but it’s very good.

Performance:

The Dell Streak 7 comes loaded with Android 2.2 Froyo OS and is powered by a 1 Ghz Qualcomm processor. the 7 inch screen has a resolution of 800 x 480, which is pretty ordinary. One would expect better from Dell here. the viewing angles are poor as well. Dell is a new player in the tablet market, and it shows. Dell hasn’t done too good a job with its navigation as well. There is a huge scope for improvement here. the navigation isn’t very smooth or flawless. Coming to media performance, it is decent, but not the best. you can download e-book reading apps and reading e-books is very comfortable, especially in the landscape mode. the video quality is average, especially owing to the poor screen resolution. the music is quite good though. the 1 Ghz Qualcomm processor does well with high end usage, and it is likely that you would have a comfortable experience while performing high-end tasks, such as browsing content rich web pages and playing games. the battery life is pretty ordinary, and hence it could do with some improvement as well. the camera is 5 MP and the photographs are good. it also has a front VGA camera for video calling.

Conclusion:

Dell is a new player in the tablet market and it would take a few launches to get everything right. There are much more experienced players who provide the same facilities on paper and better experience in practice to the user at the same price. Hence, it is advisable to go for them. the design of the Dell Streak 7 is good, but there is a huge scope for improvement on a lot of other aspects.

Rumored US$199 price for Windows RT Surface ...

Rumored US$199 price for Windows RT Surface expected to squeeze PC vendors out of the market Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Thursday 16 August 2012]

As Microsoft is reportedly considering selling its Windows RT-based Surface tablet PC at US$199, sources from notebook players are concerned that if the rumor is true, notebook brand vendors will be out of the game unless Microsoft only sells the Surface in the US.

Currently, most brand vendors are turning their focuses to Windows 8 and Intel-based tablet PC models, targeting the enterprise market with a price level above US$699.

The sources pointed out that Microsoft is fully aware that its actions have greatly offended its notebook clients, and therefore is trying to achieve success and acquire at least 30% share in the tablet PC market. a price of US$199 is expected to allow the company to achieve its needed goal.

However, if the rumored price is true, Microsoft’s Windows RT partners such as Asustek Computer, Lenovo, Samsung Electronics and Dell may all halt their development, leaving Microsoft to play in the Windows RT market by itself, the sources noted.

The sources also pointed out that Google’s Nexus 7 is seriously hurting sales of all other 7-inch tablet PCs and is also affecting demand for 10-inch models, but since Nexus 7 has not yet expanded into other important markets such as China, notebook players are still able to have room to survive. if Surface only sells in the US, it would minimize the device’s impact on other vendors’ machines, allowing others to launch their Windows RT products.

Dell Streak 10 Pro Honeycomb Tablet Shows Up In ...

Dell has their Streak lineup of tablets with the Dell Streak 5 and the Dell Streak 7. Both aren’t really true tablets in my opinion though since they aren’t running Google’s tablet version of Android which is Honeycomb. Instead they are running the smartphone version of Android. But recently Dell teased a 10-inch tablet running Honeycomb called the Dell Streak 10 Pro and it looks like that tablet is now getting showed off in China.

Looking at the tablet you can see that it’s very similar to all the other Honeycomb tablets on the market. it has a 10-inch screen, it’s 13mm thick, and it weighs 727 grams. so it’s a bit heavier and thicker than the iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 but it’s still not too bad. And as far as the I/O goes there is a lot more than both of those tablets which might make up for the added weight. it has a 40-pin dock connector along with a micro-USB port, a MicroSD card slot, and a full sized SD card slot. And it has a very nice battery as well which is supposed to last 12 hours.

It also has a 2MP camera on the front for video chat and a 5MP camera with flash on the back. And speaking of the back it has a nice brushed aluminum look and the build quality overall looks nice. as far as the storage goes it has 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Plus it has a 1GHz dual core Tegra 2 processor. so the specs are just like pretty much every other Android tablet. Although it will be a bit cheaper than the other Android tablets which will be nice. no word yet on when it’s going to arrive.

What are your thoughts on this?

Dell Streak 7 gets unofficial CM10 port

It has been a while since I have written anything about the Dell Streak 7, but here I am today, finally writing another article about the 7-inch tablet. Today’s newsworthy post is about the Streak 7′s very own CyanogenMod 10 port.

As you know, CyanogenMod 10 (abbreviated as CM10 throughout the rest of this post) is one of the most popular ROMs for a number of Android devices, the latest of which is the Dell Streak 7.

And that’s all thanks to Giveen, who is the developer at work on the Streak 7′s version of CM10. The port was started two weeks ago today; since then, it has been steadily heading towards completion. Currently, Giveen‘s post about the port lists the following as functional:

  • Boots
  • Touchscreen
  • Haptic feedback
  • External SD (displayed but not mounted)
  • Power button
  • Volume buttons (causes lockup since sound doesn’t work)
  • Brightness
  • Root
  • Capacitive buttons

And the following as nonfunctional:

  • Internal Storage
  • Sound
  • WiFi
  • Camera

It’s not quite done yet, but it’s certainly getting there. Giveen says that once WiFi, sound, and Google Apps are up and running, the Streak 7′s CM10 port will be released. until then, we’re just going to have to try to sit tight and wait.

[TabletROMs] thanks, Giveen!

This Is One Incredible CEO

The Motley Fool’s readers have spoken, and I have heeded your cries. after months of pointing out CEO gaffes and faux pas, I’ve decided to make it a weekly tradition to also point out corporate leaders who are putting the interests of shareholder and the public first and are generally deserving of praise from investors. for reference, here is last week’s selection.

This week we’ll take a look at why Lenovo Group (NASDAQOTH: LNVGY.PK) Chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing is truly a class act.

Kudos to you, mr. YuanqingPop quiz: when was the last time you or someone in your family bought a personal computer? Tick, tock, tick, tock — buzzzz! Time’s up! Chances are you probably can’t remember, because smartphones and tablets are widely dominating today’s market and are the primary reason PC makers are reaching for any branches of growth they can find.

Dell (NAS: DELL) , for instance, recently spent $2.36 billion to push further into the enterprise software business by purchasing Quest Software (NAS: QSFT) . Hewlett-Packard (NYS: HPQ) , the world’s largest PC maker by market share at 14.9%, is trying everything under the sun to reinvent itself (which apparently includes playing musical chairs with its CEOs).

Despite the cloud hanging over this industry, Lenovo shines through. Lenovo, which purchased IBM‘s (NYS: IBM) PC business in 2005, has transformed itself from a relative afterthought into the no. 2 PC company by market share with 14.7% of global sales. by contrast, Dell saw its PC shipments fall by 11.5% in the second quarter and currently ranks fourth in total PC market share behind Acer, Lenovo, and HP.

Based out of China, Lenovo has taken advantage of an inexpensive labor force and catered to a rising middle class in China to drive sales. whereas industrywide PC sales are flat, Lenovo’s surged 35% last year as profits skyrocketed 73%!

A step above his peersIt’s great that Lenovo has performed so well under Yuanqing’s leadership, but there’s another reason that he is such a remarkable leader: his appreciation for his employees.

Many of you have probably worked for a company that offered you a profit-sharing plan, gave you paid vacation time, or perhaps even divvied out bonuses. but when was the last time your CEO offered to share some of his or her own wealth with you?

That’s exactly what Yuanqing did earlier this month when he announced that the $3 million bonus he was entitled to receive due to his company’s outstanding performance would be better put to use if it were distributed among some 10,000 non-management employees within his company. what amounts to $314 per employee may not sound like a lot, but with skilled wages running considerably lower in China than in the U.S., it’s a big deal. in addition, what better way is there to improve employee loyalty than to reward those employees at every rung of the corporate ladder?

When asked what the motivation was behind the move, Lenovo spokesperson Jeffrey Shafer said his CEO felt it was only right to “redirect [the money] to the employees as a real tangible gesture for what they [had] done.”

Two thumbs upHow’s that for a feel-good CEO? Yang Yuanqing reminds us that not every CEO is self-absorbed, and he understands that employees from the bottom up are helping to bring Lenovo one step closer to being the world’s biggest PC maker by market share. It’s a truly classy move, and one that gets two sincere thumbs up from me.

A big thanks to tweeter Daniel Miller for suggesting Yang Yuanqing for this week’s incredible CEO. Do you have a CEO you’d like to nominate for this prestigious weekly honor? Shoot me an email and a one- or two-sentence description of why your choice deserves next week’s nomination, and you just might see your nominee in the spotlight.

Dell Streak 5 gets pre-alpha Ice Cream Sandwich ...

The Dell Streak 5 was released a little over two years ago, and today is actually our two-year StreakSmart anniversary.

Since then, a lot has changed for Dell and its mobile business: the company has killed off the Streak 5 and discontinued its smartphone sales in the US. Fortunately, some of the people who did purchase the device have been actively developing software for it, so it can live just a little longer.

One of the most important pieces of software for any device is the operating system – and now, the Streak 5 is capable of running Ice Cream Sandwich, thanks to some enterprising developers. The ROM is an early pre-alpha build, and developer kibuuka warns that:

This ROM is not intended for everyday use and posted mainly for experienced users and streak-oriented developers to evaluate it and collaborate on bug resolution and further development. if you expect it to fit any particular purpose – answer is: “No, not yet.”

If you’re still interested, you can read the forum post and find out how to install the ROM. Kibuuka has made lists of things that work and that don’t, as well as a few miscellaneous bugs.

Let us know if you decide to try this ROM out!
