Verizon set to sell Android 4.0 Pantech Marauder ...

Computerworld – Verizon Wireless will sell the Android 4.0 Pantech Marauder smartphone for $49.99, after rebate, with a two-year service agreement starting Thursday.

The Pantech Marauder smartphone.

The phone joins a growing list of subsidized sub-$100 smartphones sold by U.S. carriers to lure first-time users — and gain a two-year contract. The minimum Verizon Wireless Share everything plan — offering unlimited talk, text and 1 GB of data — for the Marauder and other smartphones costs $90 per month.

Even so, the Maurader has a robust 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and can run on Verizon’s fast 4G LTE network that’s now widely available.

While some high-end smartphones offer large, high definition touchscreens, the Marauder’s is 3.8-in. and only has a 480 x 800 resolution. (By comparison, the recently-released Samsung Galaxy S III has a 4.8-in. touchscreen with 720 x 1280 pixels and is available from Verizon for $199.99 with a two-year agreement.)

Verizon described the Marauder as “the perfect crossover choice for basic phone customers switching to a smartphone.” It has both a touchscreen and a physical slide-out Qwerty keyboard, as well as a 5-megapixel camera for photos, video and video chat.

The Marauder touchscreen has two interfaces.

One, called Starter mode, is simplified for first-time smartphone users. It has four home screens with pre-set widgets and a quick-dialer icon for making calls directly from the home screen.

The other interface, called Standard mode, has seven fully customizable home screens. Users can move from Starter to Standard and back again, without losing any settings.

Marauder measures 3.8-in x 2.57-in. x 0.46-in. and weighs a mere 6.1 ounces. The battery is 1,680 mAh, and is rated to provide 490 minutes of usage.

All the U.S. carriers are adding to their stock of affordable smartphones subject to a contract.

Verizon’s Web site alones lists 14 phones under $100 with a two-year agreement. some have been on the market for several months to a year, such as the $99.99 Galaxy Nexus and the Droid Charge, also priced at $99.99. even the popular iPhone 4 with 8 GB of storage sells for $99.99.

Verizon also sells three phones for $50 with a two-year contract, two for $30 and the one, the XperiaPlay, for $20. both the BlackBerry Curve and HTC Rhyme are currently offered for free with a two-year agreement.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 launching on Verizon LTE ...

Sponsored links, if any, appear in green.

Verizon Wireless will offer the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 on its 4G LTE network. Samsung has announced that the 7-inch tablet, which debuted as a WiFi-only device in April, will go on sale at Verizon stores for $349 this week. the device will then be compatible with Verizon’s Share Everything plans, which will connect the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 to more than 330 LTE markets across the U.S.

Other than the addition of LTE connectivity, the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is the same tablet that MobileBurn rated as a 4-star device. the tablet has Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 8GB of internal memory, and a microSD slot that supports up to 64 GB microSD cards. it also has a 3.2 megapixel rear camera and a VGA front-facing camera for video chat.

Verizon will begin selling the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 on August 17.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 could be offered as a ...

According to a recently leaked image received by Engadget, best Buy is going to sell a tablet bundle as a student promotion starting August 19.  The tablet is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 complete with a keyboard dock and a USB peripheral connector accessory.  The price will remain the same at $249, which means you get the tablet at normal price with a keyboard and USB connector throw in for free.

Unfortunately, there is no word on whether best Buy is going to make sure only students purchase the bundle of if it’s available to anyone.  In addition, the bundle deal is still in rumor stage, but we may see an official announcement from best Buy on deal come August 19.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 contains a 1GHz dual-core processor, Android 4.0, 8GB of memory, microSD expansion, 3MP rear facing camera, VGA front facing camera, and a 7 inch display with 1024 x 600 resolution.  Would you consider getting this tablet deal over the Nexus 7?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch Tablet Arrives on ...

Verizon expands its tablet lineup this Friday with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, a new Android tablet with a 7-inch display and 4G LTE connectivity.

The Galaxy Tab 2.0 arrives online and at Verizon stores on August 17th with a tempting $349 no-contract needed price tag. the tablet requires a data plan, and customers can add the Tab 2.0 to the new Verizon Share Everything plans for $10 a month to share data with their existing smartphones.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2.0 is a 7-inch Android tablet running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Sadly the announcement includes no information about an upgrade to the smoother, faster Android 4.1 Jelly Bean we love on the Google Nexus 7.

The Verizon Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is basically a 4G LTE version of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 model we reviewed in April.

The Tab 2.0 features a 7-inch display with a 1024 x 600 resolution screen which we note delivers good colors and wide viewing angles in our review of the WiFi model. the 4G LTE connection offers mobile connectivity for $100 over the WiFi Model’s $249 retail price. Mobile connectivity is huge for a smaller tablet, and one of the things we miss on the Google Nexus 7 tablet.

On the back of the tablet is a 3.2MP camera, paired with a front facing VGA camera for video chats. the tablet uses a 1.2GHz dual core processor and includes Bluetooth 4.0. the tablet ships with 8GB of internal memory expandable with the MicroSD card slot capable of accepting up to 64GB MicroSD cards.

Like the WiFi model, the Galaxy Tab 2.0 7 with 4G LTE sports an IR blaster capable of controlling TVs and home theater equipment. the Peel Smart Remote app acts like a universal remote and incorporates a beautiful channel guide. the remote app can control multiple components and devices in multiple rooms.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition bundles ...

Samsung is looking to milk a few extra Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 sales by repackaging the slate with a keyboard dock and USB dongle accessory and calling it the student edition of the tablet released last spring. The best news, however, is that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition is said to retail for the same $249 price as the regular edition despite the bundled goodies. Rumors have the Student Edition launching at Best Buy on August 19th, which is just in time to appeal to back to school shoppers around the US. The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 features a 7-inch display, 1GHz dual-core processor, and WiFi connectivity.

Good news for RIM fans: RIM unveils the 4G LTE ...

Suddenly RIM is in the news again, and this time it’s not about financial troubles or product delays to 2013.

Instead, the Canadian manufacturer announced the introduction of its new 4G LTE BlackBerry Playbook, along with the specifications of the 4G LTE 7-inch tablet aimed to bring stability to a company that’s facing difficult financial problems. When’s it coming and where?

The RIM 4G LTE BlackBerry Playbook has a 7-inch display with a 1024×600 resolution, packing a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4G LTE connectivity as well as HSPA+ support, 32GB of built-in memory, a 5MP rear facing camera with 1080p video recording, a 3MP front facing camera, GPS navigation, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, micro USB port, micro HDMI port, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, HTML5 browser support with Adobe Flash 11.2 support, H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, VP, WMV 9 video playback as well as stereo speakers and microphones. BlackBerry PlayBook OS is running as the operating system of choice. At the moment, RIM’s website lists it only for Canada’s Rogers Wireless, but there is the possibility of other carriers to offer it, or for RIM to offer it directly through their online shop. Pricing is unknown at the moment, but it should be higher than the Wi-Fi only, 32GB BlackBerry Playbook.

The 4G LTE BlackBerry Playbook will debut in Canada on select carriers starting August 9, but additional models with cellular connectivity adapted to the carrier demands will arrive in the United States as well as Europe, South Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, according to RIM’s BlackBerry Blog.

Where the Wi-Fi-only BlackBerry Playbook differs is in processing power, with a 1GHz dual-core processor, the lack of LTE and HSPA+ connectivity and different built-in memory size. The Wi-Fi version comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB of internal storage, unlike the Cellular+Wi-Fi BlackBerry Playbook which only comes with 32GB of built-in memory. The listed weight for the Wi-Fi BlackBerry Playbook is 425 grams. RIM’s online shop lists the BlackBerry Playbook 16GB version at $199.99, the 32GB for $249.99 and the 64GB variant for $299.99.

The most obvious opponent to the RIM 4G LTE BlackBerry Playbook is the Google Nexus 7, which like the BlackBerry Playbook has a 7” display, but it differs in resolution, with a higher one at 1280×800, has a quad-core nVidia Tegra 3 processor, internal storage is limited to 8 or 16GB, doesn’t come with cellular connectivity, be it 4G LTE or HSPA+ and is lighter at 340 grams. The Google Nexus 7 is listed at $199 for the 8GB version and $249 for the 16GB variant, which is more expensive than the Wi-Fi only BlackBerry Playbook, but comes with better specifications than it.

RIM stock prices haven’t changed significantly after the announcement, despite the 4G LTE model being the first new model announced after CEO Thorsten Heins stated that BlackBerry OS 10 will be released along with new products in 2013. RIM’s stock price at the time of writing this article is $7.17 per share, marginally better than yesterday’s price of $7.12 at stock market closing time.

The question after RIM’s announcement is this: will it help the company recover after the falling stock prices? RIM launched a new tablet today, specification-wise, by adding a different CPU and LTE connectivity and by the looks of it seems to have the Google Nexus 7 beat just because it has LTE and HSPA+ support, but will it beat it on popularity?

Asus Transformer Pad Infinity Priced at $499 and ...

Asus’ flagship tablet, the Transformer Pad Infinity, is finally reaching the US by mid July. Pricing details have been made public, with the base 32 GB version set to cost $499. Doubling the storage adds $100 to the cost, so the 64 GB version will sell for $599. The prices mentioned will fetch only the tablet; the keypad dock costs an extra $149. The keypad is worth it, since it also includes a battery unit of its own which supplements the battery the tablet, thereby allowing for more than 13 hours of total run time. Further, the keyboard dock can be indispensable for those who need to type more than a few notes or short messages.

There are some really solid aspects of the new Infinity, like the 10.1 inch display that packs in 1920 x 1200 pixels. this is by far the best resolution that you can get in an Android tablet on the market today. then of course the tablet is based on Nvidia’s 1.6 GHz quad core Tegra 3 chip for the Wi-Fi only model, which together with a 1 GB RAM promises breezy performance. Further, the tablet runs the latest Android 4.0 ICS, while there is also a LTE enabled variant in the offing which has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 ‘Krait’ dual-core processor as its heart.

Other likeable features of the tablet include its compatibility with the keyboard dock used in the previous version namely TF201. The tablet weighs a quite convenient 1.28 pounds and boasts of a 8 megapixel camera at the rear, while a 2 megapixel unit at the front allows for self portraits and video calls.

The Infinity will be up against the Acer Iconia Tab A700, which is the only other tablet that matches the Transformer Pad Infinity’s resolution. The A700 is however cheaper at $450, though the Acer tablet is powered by a slightly less powerful 1.3 Ghz processor. Of course, the Infinity will also be up against the iPad 3 and is priced just right to take on the Apple tablet. The base Infinity with 32 GB storage will cost the same as the 16 GB iPad 3. Coupled with the keypad dock, the Infinity will cost $650, though the price can still be justified given the extra battery life it offers.

Meanwhile, Asus is also expected to bring down the price of the Transformer Prime, which is also priced at the same $499 but is powered by a lower 1.3 Ghz Tegra 3 chip.

Dell Streak 5 challenged by new Samsung Galaxy ...

here on StreakSmart, we don't usually write about competitors to the Streak line of Android devices. But after watching the Samsung Unpacked event in Berlin yesterday, I was honestly shocked at the announcement of the new Samsung's latest Android 2.3 smartphone, the Galaxy Note. Why? because of the similarities between the two devices. Even though the Galaxy Note's specs absolutely demolish the Streak 5 into the ground, it's still quite easy to draw comparisons.

For those who haven't heard, the Note has a 1.4GHz Exynos dual-core processor, a 1280 x 800 Super AMOLED HD 5.3-inch screen, Android 2.3.x (Gingerbread), Samsung's TouchWiz 4.0 UX, and even NFC (Near Field Communication). It also has a something that Samsung calls the S Pen, which is similar to the HTC Flyer/EVO View's Scribe pen, a pressure-sensitive pen that can be used with the Galaxy Note and supposedly future devices, mobile and tablets alike.

One of the most interesting features of the Note (and the reason why I'm writing this) is the 5.3-inch screen.

It is an interesting size for a major smartphone manufacturer like Samsung to have on one of their devices because it is generally considered too large to be a smartphone and too small to be a tablet. Samsung has solved this issue by calling its latest Android handset a "Smart Mobile Device" while still maintaining "smartphone portability." Obviously, if the Galaxy Note maintains "smartphone portability" then the Streak 5 does too, and maybe we could stop calling the Streak a tab-phone, tablet smartphone, etc. maybe we should just call it a  "Smart Mobile Device" and potentially re-categorize it altogether.

In my opinion, Samsung has created the Galaxy Note to try to dominate the "large smartphone market," which currently consists mainly of the Dell Streak (5") and Samsung Infuse 4G (4.5"). according to my theory (which is very likely incorrect), Samsung announced the Note after the discontinuation of our beloved Streak to try and pick up the users who like the large screen for web browsing, multimedia, games, etc. but aren't keen on having a phone that has been discontinued and will likely not receive any more software updates. A bit sneaky (and unlikely) but it would be a pretty clever plan if it were true.

Another theory of mine is that Samsung took a look at the Streak 5 and thought that the "oversized phone market" is somewhere it would like to be more distinct in. maybe the company liked the 5-inch display and thought "how can we make this better and put our own spin on it?"

If you think about it, Samsung has taken the Streak 5 and changed every detail possible. The Note has a newer version of Android, a dual-core processor, a higher clockspeed on each core, a larger screen with higher resolution and better screen technology (TFT vs. Super AMOLED HD). It's also lighter, thinner, and has bigger battery (1530 mAh vs. 2500 mAh).

I suspect that the Galaxy Note will be more successful than the Streak and will increase interest in smartphones larger than the now more common 3.7- to 4.3-inch devices. maybe it will even lay the groundwork for the release and wild success of the Opus One!

Assuming the Note is even released in the US (and you're in the US), will the Note be replacing your Streak? What about everyone else?
