Apple e-mail hints at multi-user account feature ...

Apple’s iPad could one day get support for multiple user accounts if an e-mail purportedly sent to a developer from Apple’s Worldwide Developer Relations group is to be believed.

Apple Insider on Monday posted a reply an unnamed developer received from Apple after requesting that the company add support for multiple user accounts on theiPad.

“After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering,” the reply read.

That reply doesn’t go so far as to say such a feature is coming, but comes at a curious time. Apple is a few weeks away from taking the wraps off “the future of iOS” at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. the show is expected to bring the introduction of iOS 6, the release of which will likely coincide with Apple’s next iPhone later this year.

Unlike Apple’siPhone and iPod Touch, the iPad has been pitched as a device that is more communal, yet like those other devices it remains tied to a single user account. But that wasn’t Apple’s original plan, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal that ran just a few days ahead of the first iPad’s unveiling.

Citing sources, the Journal said that Apple put “significant resources” into making the iPad “intuitive to share,” going so far as to use a built-in camera to identify the person using it. what happened instead was the first-generation model shipping without a camera, and for the next two generations to continue on the single-user model. some app makers responded by adding support for multiple users, but it’s not the standard.

Also worth mentioning is one major hurdle for turning the iPad into a device that works for multiple users: storage. the iPad has only ever sold in three storage configurations (16GB, 32GB and 64GB), and by adding a Retina display on the third-generation model, some (but not all) applications have ballooned in size. Apple’s also done things like increased the quality, and thus the size, of video content in iTunes. Add in multiple users with their own apps and content, and problems could arise — all things that could require workarounds before such a feature arrives.

Update at 2:20 p.m. PT: Instapaper developer Marco Arment rains on the rumor parade, noting that the “known issue” mention is Apple’s standard go-to response: “It’s a form letter. It means nothing, except that he was not the first person to make that suggestion.” (via The Loop)

Archos 7 Home Tablet Review

The Archos 7 Home Tablet is an Android based, 7 inch tablet that retails for $200. This should be considered as a tablet for someone in the market for basic functionality. it has a web browser, e-mail client, and some basic apps pre-loaded, but really should be considered as a 7 inch media player. You have 8 GB of onboard Flash memory, but you can expand that to 32 GB by using a micro SDHC card. the screen as 800 x 480 resolution, and decent speakers. it can work well as a media player on the go when you (or your kids) need something to keep you occupied.

There are three main things that people don’t like about this tablet: its resistive touch screen, absence of an accelerometer, and lack of access to the Android market. Also, it runs Android 1.5, when you can now get one tablet (the admittedly way more expensive Motorola Xoom) with Android Honeycomb and several running Android 2.2.

That said, the Archos 7 is attractive and does not feel cheaply made. Plus it has a handy kickstand on the back so you can easily prop it up on a table without having to buy a special stand for it. Plus, 7 inch tablets are just a better size for a lot of users than a full sized 10 inch tablet. This one measures 8 x 4.2 x 0.5 inches, so it fits easily into your jacket pocket or handbag. and it weighs just a hair more than the Kindle, at 13.7 oz., so one-handed use is not tiring.

On the top edge of the Archos 7 is the power switch and micro SD card slot. on the right side is a mini USB port and a headphone / composite video out socket. it comes with earbuds, an AC adapter, and a standard USB-to-mini-USB cable. the 7 inch, 800 x 480 display is disappointing to many users, though it does have a matte display. but viewed at slightly “off” viewing angles, the picture fades significantly, though the picture is crisp and nice when viewed straight on.

Most of the new tablets have capacitive touch screens, but this one does not, so anyone used to using a capacitive touch screen will feel as if they’re taking a step backwards using the Archos 7 resistive touch screen. In fairness, it is responsive for a resistive touch screen. the lack of accelerometer is also problematic to many users. Additionally, there is no hardware switch or software utility for changing screen orientation. however, some apps default to a vertical screen, so all is not lost.

The Archos 7 Home Tablet doesn’t have access to the Google Android Market. This doesn’t mean you can’t get apps, just that you have to try a little harder to find and install them. Archos has its own AppsLib store, which has a limited number of apps available. the tablet does come preloaded with a few apps, but they do not include Gmail, Facebook, or YouTube. You can get apps from AndroidFreeware.com, and you can get apps off individual sites that offer them, but it’s a pain not having access to the Android market.

The Archos 7 tablet shines in terms of battery life. You can have the WiFi on and get around 7 hours, and with WiFi off, you can squeeze out a few more hours with normal usage.

The bottom line with the Archos 7 is that it’s one of those “You get what you pay for” situations. though the tablet comes with Android 1.5, it is upgradable to 1.6, and at that time, you should be able to access the Android market as well. the Archos 7 does fine for playing on-board video and reading e-books. It’s very affordable, and the screen (despite its low resolution) is crisp and bright. but the lack of accelerometer, older operating system, and resistive touch screen are three features that will be off-putting for a lot of people.

First of all, Google’s operating system Android is what powers the Samsung Galaxy Tab. one of the best aspects of owning an Android-based product is the fact that Google has incorporated so many unique and innovative services into the devices that it makes them fun to own. once you get a Galaxy Tab, you will be able to use the built-in GPS with Google Maps to figure out where you need to go. you can also access your e-mail (if you have Gmail) from your tablet when on the go. Your tablet can also access Google calendar, helping you to keep track of appointments and social events.

Another feature on the Samsung Galaxy Tab is Internet access. Some models provide WiFi, others a 3G network connection. the 3G version operates through Sprint, and many users find that this is the most reliable option. WiFi on this tablet functions, but not as it did when it first came out. Apparently, Samsung has reduced its working capacity. the connection crashes in most cases which can be infuriating. Crashes are very infrequent when using the 3G Galaxy Tab – this feature alone makes it very user-friendly. you can find some deals that combine Sprint service with the purchase of a Samsung Galaxy Tab, but you will then have to sign a contract. Since the 3G network through Sprint outperforms WiFi, as of right now, choosing Sprint is your best option if you want to get the Galaxy Tab. When you start your search for the ideal tablet PC, do a comparison of the Samsung Galaxy Tab line with others in the same price range. Generally speaking, however, the Samsung line of tablets offers a lot of value for their price and you have three different models to chose from. in the last few years, the Samsung company has been working hard to make a positive impact on the tablet PC market.

Hackers can spy on BlackBerry PlayBook connections

Security researchers at the Intrepidus Group  have found a way to listen in on the connection between the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and a BlackBerry handset, a significant weakness that exposes corporate e-mail to malicious snoops.

The researchers — Zach Lanier and Ben Nell – discussed the PlayBook security problems at the Infiltrate conference this week.

Threatpost’s Dennis Fisher explains:

[The weakness] enables an attacker to listen in on the connection between the tablet and a BlackBerry handset. That connection, which is done via Bluetooth in the company’s Bridge application, is designed to allow users to access their corporate email, calendar and other data on the tablet.

[The researchers were] able to locate and grab the authentication token sent between the two devices during Bridge connections and, as an unprivileged user, connect to the PlayBook and access the user’s email and other sensitive information. the key to their finding…is the fact that the PlayBook’s OS puts the authentication token for the Bridge sessions in a spot that is readable by anyone who knows how to find it.

“while the bridge is active, the token is in a place that is essentially world readable. the .all file being in a place that is world readable is the thing that causes the problem with the Bridge sessions,” Lanier said.

In addition to the Bridge vulnerability, Fisher reports that the security team also found that the file names in the BlackBerry app store can be predictable, allowing a user to simply increment the file name to a desired number and download whatever app she chose.

UPDATE: Statement from RIM, makers of the BlackBerry PlayBook:

“The BlackBerry PlayBook issue described at the Infiltrate security conference has been resolved with BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, which is scheduled to be available as a free download to customers in February 2012. there are no known exploits, and risk is mitigated by the fact that a user would need to install and run a malicious application after initiating a BlackBerry Bridge connection with their BlackBerry smartphone.”

RIM Seen Too Late With E-Mail PlayBook Dominated ...

Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) — Research In Motion Ltd. may need more than the souped-up software unveiled yesterday in Las Vegas to turn its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet into a challenger to Apple Inc.’s iPad.

at the Cosmopolitan hotel last night, RIM executives showed off devices with the new PlayBook OS 2.0 software, which includes built-in e-mail and calendar programs missing from the original version of the device. a nine-month delay in getting e- mail onto the PlayBook hurt the tablet’s chances of mainstream success, said Jennifer Fritzsche, an analyst at Wells Fargo & co. in Chicago.

“It’s too little, too late,” said Fritzsche. “I would call this a working version of what should’ve come last year — things that should’ve been there out of the box.”

the fate of the PlayBook, RIM’s initial foray beyond smartphones, is critical because it’s the first device to be built using new software on which the company is betting its future. after postponing the introduction of PlayBook OS 2.0 to February, RIM said in December that the first BlackBerrys based on the new operating system, called BB10, won’t be available until the “latter part” of this year.

Fritzsche says the PlayBook’s appeal is now largely limited to corporate BlackBerry customers who were willing to wait for the software upgrade. She rates RIM “market perform” and expects the company to ship 100,000 PlayBook devices this fiscal quarter. RIM shipped 150,000 last quarter, while Apple sold 11.1 million iPads in its most recently reported period, outpacing the PlayBook 74 to 1.

Fritzsche is less optimistic than some other analysts, who on average project RIM will ship 177,000 PlayBooks this quarter and 186,000 in the three months ending in may, according to a survey compiled by Bloomberg. the company shipped 200,000 in the period that ended in August.

BB10 is based on QNX, sophisticated software also used to run nuclear power plants and unmanned aerial drones. RIM acquired the software when it bought Ottawa-based QNX Software Systems in 2010. Difficulties in melding QNX to the PlayBook and marketing missteps have left PlayBook shipments at a little more than 1 percent of those for the market-leading iPad.

“the most frustrating thing about the last 12 months is that PlayBook itself has had so much potential,” RIM Vice President Alec Saunders said in an interview at the event. “We’re finally starting to see that potential in the PlayBook 2.”

By not getting e-mail into the PlayBook from the outset, RIM lost an opportunity to gain market share in a period when some other tablets based on Google Inc.’s Android software failed to catch on, said Fritzsche and Tavis McCourt, an analyst at Morgan Keegan & co. That prospect is now largely gone — nabbed instead by Amazon.com Inc.’s two-month-old Kindle fire tablet, which is smaller than the iPad and similar in size to the PlayBook, McCourt said.

“It’s an iPad market,” said McCourt, who is based in Nashville, Tennessee, and rates RIM “market perform.” He expects RIM to ship 300,000 PlayBooks this quarter, with a drop to 150,000 next quarter. “every vendor has failed, with the exception of Amazon.”

Amazon said in December that the Kindle fire tablet had been the top-selling product on Amazon.com since its September unveiling and that the company was selling more than 1 million of the tablets and Kindle e-readers a week.

Amazon’s newest device hit store shelves on Nov. 14 and quickly surpassed more-established tablets from Samsung Electronics co. and Barnes & Noble Inc. last month, research firm IHS Inc. estimated Amazon would ship 3.9 million Kindle Fires in the last three months of 2011, making it the no. 2 tablet. Apple was projected to ship 18.6 million iPads.

one bit of good news for RIM is that after repeatedly missing sales and profit targets and deadlines for new software, PlayBook OS 2.0 is still scheduled for February, McCourt said. RIM said on Jan. 9 that the free software upgrade “is expected to be available” in February, without giving a more specific time frame.

“That’s a positive,” McCourt said.

and RIM has added other tools to PlayBook OS 2.0 to entice consumers attracted to the iPad. one new feature turns a BlackBerry smartphone into a remote control for PlayBook users to play movies on a connected big-screen TV. RIM says the upgrade also includes BlackBerry Video Storefront, which will offer “thousands of movies and TV shows” for rent the day they appear on DVD.

To appeal to corporate customers, RIM said it has improved the PlayBook’s ability to create and edit presentations and transfer files from a laptop or desktop computer. those improvements may provide some additional incentive to enterprise buyers that have held out for the e-mail upgrade, but guessing the size of that potential market “is very hard to gauge” as RIM’s grip on the corporate computing world loosens, said Alkesh Shah, an analyst at Evercore Partners Inc. in New York. He rates RIM “equalweight.”

“we should have done it earlier. but we’re doing it now,” Saunders said last night. “It’s a great product. There are going to be a lot of very happy people in February.”

RIM has had a better start to 2012 in the stock markets as well. after falling 75 percent last year to below its book value, or the value of the company’s assets minus its liabilities, the stock has climbed 7 percent this year, compared with a 3.7 percent gain for the Nasdaq Composite Index. RIM rose less than 1 percent yesterday to $15.51 at the close in New York.

Still, making any money from the PlayBook will be tough, said Matt Thornton, an analyst at Avian Securities LLC in Boston. RIM has cut the price of the PlayBook by as much as $400 to spur sales, wiping out any profit margin, he said.

the PlayBook with 64 gigabytes of memory now costs $300, down from $700, on best Buy’s website. the basic 16-gigabyte version is $300, down from $500.

“you can continue to bring out buyers with fire sales, but RIM can’t make money at those prices,” said Thornton, who rates RIM “neutral.”

“Volumes are going to be hard to come by, and margins are less than smartphones,” he said. “when you roll that up, it doesn’t amount to much.”

In Icon boss Tandy Cheung, according to reporting by The next Web, however said, the company intends to sell the dolls despite Apple's warnings.

Apple could “do anything they like,” adding the company “will not stop, we already started production.”

Cheung has reportedly been told by lawyers in Hong Kong that that he was not violating Apple's intellectual property as long as he didn't include any Apple products.

“Steve Jobs is not an actor, he's just a celebrity… There is no copyright protection for a normal person. Steve Jobs is not a product… so I don't think Apple has the copyright of him,” The next Web cited Cheung as saying.

Apple was able to stop the sale of a Steve Jobs figurine created by MIC Gadget in 2010.  But for now, Apple has not obtained an injunction and has not taken down Web sites selling the in Icons collectible.

Asustek launched Android 4.0-powered tablet this year, and Acer and Lenovo will release their tablets with Ice Cream Sandwich next year, the sources told DigiTimes. and, when the new update (4.1) will be available, those Android 4.0-powered devices will be upgraded.

In the current tablet race, iPad is ahead of the pack but affordable tablets, including Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, are threatening its dominance. It has also made other PC companies rethink their strategies about their tablet PC lines, according to the Taiwanese sources.

It's not the first time for Google to launch its own tablet. Earlier this year, the company joined hands with Samsung to release the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is powered by Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). However, the new tablet may be made by Motorola, which Google acquired earlier this year for $12.5 billion.
