Preview of Windows Phone 7 Devices

Big names Samsung, LG and HTC are queuing up to be one of the three early adopters of the new Windows Phone 7 mobile devices from Microsoft… and there are even whispers of an iPad-style tablet device!

Windows Phone 7, Not Windows Mobile 7

Set for release in Q4 of 2010, Windows Phone 7 is about to be unleashed upon the world. With a startling new user interface, Microsoft’s replacement for the Windows Mobile series is set to either be a massive success, or a notable failure.

And let’s not forget, this is Windows Phone 7 and not Windows Mobile 7 – a completely new mobile OS!

Early signs are positive, and many big mobile phone manufacturers have been signed up to produce hardware, such as HTC, LG and Samsung.

In order to assume control over the platform that didn’t exist in the days of Windows Mobile, Microsoft wants Windows Phone 7 devices to share a very specific hardware profile. After the initial launch of the platform early in 2010, this control was expected to exclude cheaper handsets, however, this is not the case. Windows Phone 7 devices will be available at several price points.

Samsung Cetus i917

With three buttons across the lower portion of the phone – a requirement of all WP7 devices – the Samsung Cetus i917 is also blessed with a 4-inch screen with an 800 x 480 AMOLED display, a common feature of Samsung mobiles.

As per all Windows Phone 7 devices, this handset has a high spec putting the platform on a par with upper price point Android devices and of course the iPhone. In fact, the form factor of the Samsung Cetus i917 is comparable to an Apple iPhone, with its similar dimensions.

It is most likely that the Samsung Windows Phone 7 device will turn out to be the most expensive.

LG C900

The LG C900 is an attractive landscape slider phone with a four row keyboard and the obligatory Windows Phone 7 three buttons split up, with the back and search buttons appearing to be capacitive, while the Windows button is a physical chrome relief.

LG have been issuing similarly designed devices for Android over the past few months, all at lower price points, and this handset is expected to follow this trend.

While it will meet the same high minimum Windows Phone 7 specs as other devices, certain features will be restricted while the build quality won’t be to the same standard as a Samsung or HTC device. LG are also working on the LG E900.

HTC Mozart/Schubert Windows 7 Phone

Possibly the one the majority of existing Windows Mobile users are waiting for is the HTC Mozart (also known as HTC Schubert in North America). Given that the majority of Windows Mobile 5 and later phones have been HTC designs, annually improved by the successful electronics company with models like the HTC Touch and the HTC HD2 – not to mention the success they have had with Android phones like the HTC Desire – the HTC Mozart is likely to be one of the top-selling Windows Phone 7 devices.

Indeed, the HTC Mozart/Schubert has a similar spec to the Android-powered HTC Desire, not to mention a similar form factor, if recent leaked images are anything to go by.

Like the Samsung models, this particular HTC Windows Phone 7 device is likely to be one of the more expensive devices.

HTC T8788

As well as the slimline software keyboard design of the HTC Mozart, HTC are releasing at least 4 other phones.

Among them are the HTC T8788 – more than likely set to be given a much more distinctive name before release – with what you might think is a fine-looking design and a sliding QWERTY keyboard in landscape mode.

Except that it isn’t – what you can see peeking out from the side of this phone is instead a high quality loudspeaker! This model is also equipped with a kickstand, making it ideal for propping up on your desk or bedside table to enjoy your favourite media content.

Windows Phone 7 Tablets

In the wake of the Apple iPad and various Android tablet devices, rumours have emerged of a tablet Windows Phone 7 device from HTC.

As yet, the device is unconfirmed and there have been no official images of the device. Unofficial images have also been slow in coming forward, which suggests that either security is ultra-tight at HTC headquarters, or tech journalists have been promised to silence.

Alternatively, the device could be set for a later launch date than 2010 Q4 with the rest of Windows Phone 7. The other option of course is that the device might be nothing more than speculation. Although reported in several places, this possibility shouldn’t be ruled out, however, given the success of the Apple iPad and the various Android tablets, Microsoft will no doubt be targeting this market segment sooner or later.

The Poisonous Price Tag Of $199 Damages ...

“Microsoft Surface to retail at $199!” The various headlines around the web (here’s Engadget’s as an example) are going to cause problems for Microsoft.

I’ve no inside information on the launch price of the Surface RT, but let’s assume it’s true. is Microsoft taking $80 out of that price to pay for the operating system? Probably not, so right there they’ve got an advantage of almost a third of the retail price over their hardware partners. The price is comparable to the Nexus 7, but the bill of materials is likely much higher.

Can Microsoft make it up on the back-end, relying on sales through the Windows 8 app store and Xbox Live annual memberships to reach a break even point? even if they can manage to make it, I doubt their hardware partners can come close to matching them while paying for the OS with none of the post-sale income streams to help boost the bottom line.

The $199 is challenging in more ways than one, but if it Microsoft does release the Surface at  that price point, it’s an incredibly aggressive move on their part to grab market and mind share.

On the flip side, if the perception of the Surface RT costing $199 manages to establish itself, then any price above that is going to make consumers think twice about buying the tablet. even a $299 price tag, which right now seems a reasonable number, is going to make the Surface RT look expensive.

Microsoft needs to get on top of this story and ensure that people are delighted when they see the price of the Surface RT, not shocked. Expectations need to be set, and then exceeded at the point of delivery.

Dell Streak 7 Android capsule calmly disposed of

Dell Streak 7 Android capsule calmly disposed of

It looks such as Dell’s onto any shedding Streak — laptop manufacturer offers ceased selling the particular Streak 7 tablet online in the US, saying that the actual 7-inch Android pill is ‘no lengthier available’.

In the statement delivered to Engadget, Dell says that,

“remains devoted to the particular flexibility industry and is constantly on the market products the following and in other parts of the world.”

Dell provides, “the Streak 7 delivered an original experience with regard to customers that desired a bigger screen size however the flexibility to remain connected to their individual and also specialist content material during a tight schedule.”

The Streak 7 continues to be listed on Dell’s UK internet site, marketing with regard to £250, but the fact this has been ditched in the States — and the fact that Dell’s assertion refers back to the system previously tense — is definitely an sick omen for the diminutive Android capsule. we all anticipate it will quietly disappear in the future, much like the previously 5-inch Streak, which can be right now listed as ‘unavailable’ upon Dell’s Blighty-based go shopping.

The actual Streak 7 barely established our society burning — if this introduced it absolutely was running Android 2.two Froyo, and while it’s because been updated in order to Honeycomb it doesn’t offer significantly to really make it more appealing compared to the number associated with compete with Android tablets on the market, or even certainly Apple’s apple ipad 2.

We all couldn’t survive shocked when Dell drops out from the Android race for the time being — the business will be best when it comes to flogging Windows personal computers, and then we may notice a lot more Dell tablet efforts as soon as Windows 8 is prepared.

Dell is the owner of Alienware, therefore it might start making capsules geared towards players, some thing we have not necessarily observed up to now.

German court rules Motorola Xoom does not violate ...

Apple filed a stealth suit last summer time alleging the Motorola Xoom violated the look patent that supports the iPad. While Apple has already established some success progressing its large patent gun against Samsung, exactly the same can not be stated for Motorola: a German court just asserted that the reference Android tablet does not infringe on Apple’s design claim. The ruling is not an entire win for Motorola, however, because the court wouldn’t invalidate the patent — it might theoretically be equalized against other pills later on. Losing will still sting for Apple, which now needs to turn to a multi-touch patent claim (amongst others) whether it really wants to make Motorola have the warmth in Mannheim.

ASUS Eee Pad MeMO 370T Hits The FCC – Is ...

No sooner than we discovered a leaked benchmark for the Google Nexus 7 tablet, the ASUS Eee Pad MeMO 370T passes through the FCC on the very same day. You may remember this same tablet from CES in January where we showed you guys our quick hands-on with the tablet, courtesy of our friends at ASUS.

Before there were whispering of a Nexus tablet, the MeMO 370T was the OG $250 tab, equipped with a powerful Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor in a handy 7-inch fun-sized package. The FCC documents posted today didn’t give away too much, only that this particular model will be WiFi only (sorry, 4G lovers).

While it’s more than likely we are looking at the Nexus 7 tablet, I guess it’s also possible this could be a better equipped (and slightly more expensive) tablet offered through ASUS, and not direct from Google. It’s all speculation at this point, but now we definitely know something is coming. Here’s our video from CES for those that missed it.

ViewSonic Preparing 22 Inch Android 4.0 Tablet for ...

Computex 2012 takes place next month and it appears that among the many gadgets we’ll see there ViewSonic will bring a 22 inch Android 4.0 slate. That’s got to be the biggest Android tablet ever and I can’t even say it qualifies as a tablet, but rather a huge portable all in one PC of sorts.

It would certainly be very heavy to carry around and you’d have to hold it propped on something to enjoy it. Engadget claims that ViewSonic will also be bringing a new lineup of smart business tablet monitors, with a great variation of such models. Computex takes place in Taipei, in case you’re wondering and it appears that ViewSonic also has plans for similar devices with Windows 8. I’m really curious to learn the specs and resolution of this 22 inch newcomer and I certainly expect a huge battery inside.

Also, I’m sure that once propped up you can use this as some sort of display for other devies, right? Anyway with the inclusion of HDMI ports on more and more tablets and phones I don’t really see the need for such a huge slate. it may be an interesting tool for people working with high end graphics and stuff, so I also expect a kickass stylus here.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) leak suggests $399 ...

Earlier this week we received more than a couple of reports that the new Galaxy Tab 2, both the 7-inch and 10-inch models from Samsung had been delayed until late April. while things still seem to be on track for a late April release we now have a leaked price too. the folks from Engadget spotted the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 2 at Office Depot of all places, showing a price tag of only $399 for the Ice Cream Sandwich tablet.

The Galaxy Tab 2 is Samsung’s second attempt at a 10-inch tablet and has a few changes over the original. those include a slightly thinner chassis, and front facing speaker grills similar to a few models we’ve seen in Germany as of late. under the hood is the same 1280 x 800 resolution screen and 1.0 GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, so no quad-core here but still plenty fast.

The page has since been pulled, but the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 was spotted at Office Depot’s online store for only $399. a sign that Samsung might finally be realizing they’ve been asking a bit too much for their tablets. after a second look you’ll quickly notice that is for the 8GB model, and sadly the 16GB will probably still be $449. most likely they’ll also offer a 32GB model priced around $499, which seems high given the price of better tablets like the Transformer Prime.

The Tab 2 has already cleared the FCC, including once with AT&T bands and should be hitting stores in the US soon. Once Samsung makes any official announcements we’ll be sure to update with all the details.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga gets early UK pricing – ...

Ultrabooks aren’t setting the world on fire like Intel and OEMs hoped, but Lenovo came out with an interesting concept at CES. they showed off the IdeaPad Yoga, a convertible laptop with a svelte frame that kept the full size keyboard. It was running a developer preview of Windows 8, and could be used a regular laptop, or flipped back where it would then switch to tablet mode. Lenovo today announced early pricing details for the IdeaPad Yoga in the UK.

Engadget reports that the base model of the IdeaPad Yoga will start at £1,199 (~$1,901), while a more powerful version will cost around £1,500 (~$2,378). Lenovo is keen to point out that the IdeaPad Yoga is the “industry’s thinnest convertible Ultrabook “, measuring 0.67″ (16.9mm) thick, and weighing 3.1lbs (1.47kg).

Lenovo didn’t reveal exactly when they were planning to launch the tablet, but you’ll be able to go check it out at the Gadget show Live at the Birmingham NEC. The company will also be showing off some other all-in-ones, as well as its regular ultrabooks, the U310 and U410.

We had a little hands-on time with the IdeaPad Yoga back at CES 2012, with Lenovo showing off the key features, including the convertible nature and glass trackpad. Specs will otherwise be what you’ve come to expect from other ultrabooks, including an array of Core i3 to Core i7 processors, and up to 256GB of SSD storage. The Yoga will initially ship with Windows 7, although additional models will come with Windows 8 when the OS makes its debut.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 makes a stop at the FCC

The 10.1-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 has made a pitstop at the FCC as it rolls towards launch. The HSPA+ version, model number GT-P5100, has been given the approval of the federal commission, flashing its 850 and 1900MHz support along the way. also put through the paces were the Tab 2′s 802.11n and Bluetooth 3.0 capabilities.

The presence of an HSPA+ radio tuned to AT&T compatible bands suggests the new slate could see a carrier release here in the States, but at this moment this remains unconfirmed.

Nook Color “beats” BlackBerry ...

Looks like Barnes and Noble is preparing for the rumored upcoming new “tablet” from its eBook rival Amazon. according to Engadget, the Nook Color Android eReader from the popular US bookstore updates the operating system version of its popular Nook Color device allowing owners to buy some apps like angry Birds Pulse Feed reader and so much more. the Nook Color also includes Barnes & Noble’s very own app, the Nook Friends.

One of the notable new features of the Nook Color is the enhanced browsing experience. the Nook Color 1.2 update is like FroYo, but less populated. the bookstore company says that the 7 inch eReader’s web browser is now faster, and includes better gesture support. the new browser also allows users to switch between mobile and full versions of websites they read. the Nook Color OS 1.2 update now supports Flash Player 10.1.

Surprisingly, the new update also includes an email client, indirectly beating Research in Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook that currently doesn’t support its own email app. the BlackBerry PlayBook is a 7 inch QNX based BlackBerry tablet OS-powered device released this month. the BlackBerry PlayBook also supports Adobe Flash, and supports video chat and can shoot HD videos.

Barnes and Noble’s 1.2 update description:

“Barnes and Noble is providing a major firmware update for NOOK Color that contains exciting new features, addresses key customer requests and provides ongoing performance improvements. With NOOK Color v1.2 you get NOOK Email™, an enhanced web experience with Adobe Flash Player, access to popular apps like angry Birds, plus NOOK Kids Read and Play titles, enhanced NOOK Books, and more.”

Nook Color is now considered as the “cheapest tablet” (especially now) with a competitive tag price of $250. Apparently, some rumors floating on the internet are claiming that Amazon is also scheduled to join the market with an Android tablet. can this new Nook Color update help the company “survive” Amazon’s upcoming device?
