Surface: New Microsoft Tablet Revealed! (Details ...

After last week’s secret announcement card inviting tech bloggers and developers to a big unveil, the excitement has been building about Microsoft. For the Redmond company to be on the excitement radar is very atypical; we usually crane our necks back and forth for the alternating tennis match of feature releases between Twitter, Facebook, Apple, Google and others.

At 4:00 p.m. PST today, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took the stage in Los Angeles, and got quickly to it, first touting the number of machines around the world running Windows. Ballmer quickly moved to why everyone was there, to either quell or fulfill the rumors that Microsoft had a tablet to share…

“With Windows 8, we did not want to leave any seam uncovered,” said Ballmer, talking to a packed and excited house. “We wanted to give (Windows 8) its own companion innovation.” We wanted to provide “something new, something different, a whole new family of computing devices…”

Devices.

With that important word thrown out there, Ballmer brought forth a gleaming, new black tablet PC, as the word Surface appeared on the screen. Surface is “a tool to surface your passion, your creativity,” said Ballmer to the excited crowd.

Windows Live and Windows Division President Steven Sinofsky took the stage shortly after Ballmer, demonstrating the new device. Details immediately out the gate? Surface comes in two models, one running Windows RT (a somewhat toned-down version of Windows 8) and an upscale model running Windows 8 Professional.

Surface has a 10.6 inch display (with HD on the Pro version), weighs in at 1.5 lbs for RT and 1.9 lbs for Pro, with thicknesses ranging from # mm. The slick looking case is a vapor-magnesium, fused into a scratch-resistant alloy mix during the melting process.

Surface has an NVidia ARM processor for RT and a far more powerful Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor for the Pro version. The USB port (2.0 for RT and 3.0 for Pro) was shown to be capable of transferring a 1 GB file in 5 seconds – nothing to scoff at, either.

Unboxing the $499 Lenovo IdeaPad S2110 and ...

The Nexus 7 may rule the Android tablet world for now, but we haven’t forgotten about a Lenovo gem that was just released a week ago. Packing better specs than most, the Lenovo IdeaPad S2110 also comes with an optional keyboard dock – making the combo a more than able replacement for a  laptop. And just look at the price that Lenovo is currently selling the tablet for – someone’s clearly want to impress its customers.

You have been wowed by the specs and price tag, now let’s top off the excitement with some unboxing video of the IdeaPad S2110, done by the folks at Lenovo themselves.

Don’t be fooled by the ultra-minimalist packaging, because what counts the most is the inside (or so we’re told). Feast your eyes on the stylish tab and its 10.1-inch HD IPS display. This model obviously comes with the docking station, as you can see on the video. We like how you can attach the tablet to the keyboard dock, secure the hatch, and fold it down, practically turning it into a netbook.

And because we dig the specs, here they are again: dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB/32GB onboard storage, 5MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, 1.3MP front camera, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi b/g/n, GPS, and micro HDMI port. no Jelly Bean here just yet, as it is shipping with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. as for the keyboard dock, it comes with two USB ports, 3-in-1 SD card reader, and its own battery.

Check out the embedded video to know what $499 – if you decide to opt for the 16GB model of the IdeaPad S2110 tablet and keyboard dock combo – can get you. the 32GB model of the tablet plus keyboard will cost $529. They will all be ready to ship later in the month.

Motorola Xoom 2 Review: Design, Hardware

Motorola’s 2nd Xoom device sheds weight and provides a couple of excitement.

Motorola’s first Xoom was one of the first Android 3.0 “Honeycomb” tablets hitting the marketplace this past year, but it is disappointing to determine the new Xoom 2 doesn’t provide a taste of Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich”. The Xoom 2 includes Android 3.2.2 pre-installed. The initial Xoom included 3.0 but Telstra makes the three.2 upgrade available. Both models should support ICS as well as an official update is originating later this season, although it’s already readily available for some US models. if you are pleased to take matters to your own hands you can root a Xoom and check out ICS now.

Considering they’re both running versions of Honeycomb, today I’m mostly likely to concentrate on the hardware differences using the new Xoom 2. The 32GB Xoom 2 can be obtained from Telstra for $720 outright ($120 less expensive than last year’s Xoom), or on plans beginning with $49 monthly with 1GB of mobile data. unlike a number of its competitors, there is no cheaper Wi-Fi only model.Such as the original Xoom, the brand new model supports 802.11n at 5GHz — that is handy in you’re managing a dual-band Wi-Fi network to reduce on congestion and interference. for special broadband there is no LTE, but you will find quad-band HSDPA supporting 14.4 Mbps down and 5.76 Mbps up.

When it comes to design, the slender new Xoom 2 has shed 127 gm (right down to 603 gm) and slimmed down by almost another to eight.8 mm. The modification is nearly just like that between your third and fourth iPads, meaning the Xoom 2 is all about comparable to the apple ipad 2. as a result this new Xoom is a little more petite compared to new third-generation iPad.

The Xoom 2 has additionally undergone a makeover, with tapered edges and black matte styling (rather than shiny silver) contributing to the slimming effect. The alterations certainly help you to grip and much more comfortable to keep. Motorola has actually downgraded the leading webcam from 2MP to at least one.3MP, that is disappointing although not necessarily a deal-breaker.

The redesign can also be apparent whenever you flip the Xoom 2 on its back. The ability button has moved in the top corner towards the edge, that makes it more readily found together with your right-hand when holding it in panoramic mode. The amount buttons are beneath it and therefore are considerably bigger than those found on the initial Xoom. The trunk camera has additionally gone to live in the centre at the very top, as the speakers are higher to lessen the likelihood of you accidentally covering all of them with both hands.

Theoretically these changes should result in the Xoom 2 more user-friendly, however the buttons really are a little too recessed for my liking and may be awkward to discover and push. it might grow you however i thought it was too simple to accidentally hit the incorrect button. it must be simpler to separate them by touch.

One of the greatest criticisms of Motorola’s original Xoom was its size. it had been widely panned to be overweight and bulky, had an oddly placed power/lock button and was uncomfortable to keep for very long periods. Motorola has clearly paid attention to these issues because the Xoom 2 is both thinner (8.8mm) and lighter (599g) than its predecessor. it is then relatively comfortable to keep with two hands, however the wide form factor means the Xoom 2 stills seem like a chore to keep single-handedly.

Keep looking and you will find more goodness as a micro-SD slot alongside a micro-SIM slot (hidden within rubber flap at the base edge). this can be a relief thinking about the early 16GB Xoom 2 units observed in the united states lacked a micro-SD slot. Even if the initial Xoom first shipped its micro-SD slot and USB host features were disabled. The Xoom II’s micro-SD slot calculates from the box also it supports USB host features with an On the run adaptor cable (however i couldn’t test drive it because an OTG cable isn’t contained in the box). The possible lack of a full-sized USB host port will disappoint many people. Thankfully the change to a micro-SIM card means now you can access the micro-SD slot with no need to take away the Sim.

The Xoom 2 has yet another trick up its sleeve, a built-in infrared port on top edge in panoramic mode (near the headphone jack). while using supplied Dijit software you are able to turn named right into a programmable universal remote much like a Logitech Harmony.

With regards to the screen the Xoom 2 still sports a ten.1-inch 1280×800 display, but it is now an IPS panel with scratch-resistance Gorilla Glass. The brand new display is slightly brighter, provides more vibrant colours than its predecessor and far wider viewing angles. The downside would be that the shirt is warmer, therefore the whites aren’t as white as around the original Xoom.

Underneath the bonnet the processor continues to be bumped up from the 1 GHz dual-core to some 1.2GHz dual-core, still combined with 1GB of RAM. The additional grunt is noticeable although not striking in daily tasks, with complicated webpages loading a rather faster and also the interface auto-rotating just a little quicker. Still it feels sluggish sometimes. more demanding activities for example graphic-intensive racing games and also the ABC’s Flash-powered iView often showcase the additional grunt of the processor upgrade, but it is hardly noticeable when running the Xoom and Xoom 2 alongside.

To tell the truth the Xoom 2 feels as though an immediate reaction to the Apple ipad 2 (DVD to iPad 2), that is understandable thinking about the iPad still dominates named space. Unfortunately for Motorola the Xoom 2 continues to be overshadowed not just by the launch from the apple ipad 3 but additionally through the launch of Frozen treats Sandwich Android tablets packing quad-core processors. So whether you’re an Android or iGadget fan, there are more tablets for prone to blow you away.

Motorola claims the Xoom 2 (dvd to xoom 2) includes a life of the battery close to 10 hours however the figure you accomplish is determined by your usage patterns. Normally, we were able to drain battery within six with heavy use. this imply Motorola’s figure is quite inflated, however with moderate make use of the Xoom 2 should really push nearer to a far more respectable eight hours. unlike the initial Xoom, which used an AC adapter port for charging, the Xoom 2 uses the standard micro-USB port instead.

Intel CEO shows off an Intel-based tablet design ...

Intel chief executive Paul Otellini said in his keynote speech today that computing experiences are everywhere as consumers begin to reap the benefits of low-cost electronics that are spreading into everyday devices.

As part of that trend, Otellini showed showed off a new design for a tablet computer running on Intel’s Atom smartphone and tablet microprocessors. the upcoming 32-nanometer chip can run a tablet as well as a PC, and it will be able to run Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system when it debuts later this year.

At the Consumer Electronics Show, Otellini said the devices themselves are less relevant, and we are moving from the era of the personal computer to the era of personal computing. Otellini, who is Intel’s fifth CEO and he has been an employee since 1974, said that the march of technology over time has been astounding.

Otellini also touted the excitement around Ultrabooks, or full-fledged computers that are thin and fast like Apple’s MacBook Air. Jeff Clarke, vice chairman of Dell, showed off a cool-looking 13-inch Ultrabook with a carbon-fiber base.

“What is it they won’t compromise on and what is it they shouldn’t compromise on?” Otellini asked. “the Ultrabook is ultra-responsive and totally without compromise.”

He said that devices have to be engaging and keep us with us. They have to be consistent, meaning “no compromise in quality or convenience.” Devices have to be aware of our needs and adapt to them. and they must be secure. those are the salient features that Intel focused on when creating its specification for next-generation laptops, or Ultrabooks.

Intel plans on spending hundreds of millions of dollars on its Ultrabook marketing campaign starting this spring. That’s as big a commitment in marketing as Intel made on its famous Centrino marketing campaign from 2003, when laptops with WiFi internet were touted for the first time.

Leslie Sobol, vice president of product marketing at rival Advanced Micro Devices, said that she isn’t sure that another “ingredient brand” marketing campaign, where Intel’s brand becomes more important than that of its customers, is a good idea. it may be good for Intel’s brand name and its products, but that doesn’t mean it will be good for Intel’s customers.

AnandTech – Archos G9 Turbos On Sale ...

The saga of the Archos G9 tablets, once dubbed the world's fastest, has been a little drawn out. Archos originally intended to have 1.5 GHz variants out by this holiday season, but we can now confirm that the week of December 5th US buyers will be able to get their hands on the 1.2 GHz Archos 80 and 101 G9 Turbo lines. Pricing should reflect the prior annoucnements, and performance should be similar to the other recent Honeycomb tablets. To review, these 8" and 10.1" tablets differentiate themselves from the pack most by their inclusion of 250 GB of mechanical storage, perfect for media hogs.

part of our excitement when we first caught wind of these tablets was that they were based on the launch platform for Ice Cream Sandwich, making this potentially one of the easier ports for this tablet generation. Archos aims to please, targeting the release of their ICS port for the end of 1Q12. that might seem like a lot of time given the hardware similarities to the Galaxy Nexus, but consider that the Archos name is made on their vast codec support, and media capabilities, which may take some time to bake into Android 4.0.

The last bit of news we received was that Archos would have G9 models based on TI's OMAP 4460 SoC waiting for us at CES. though similar to the OMAP 4430, the increased CPU and GPU clocks (1.5 GHz and 384 MHz, respectively) should provide a satisfying boost in performance. We'll update with confirmed pricing when we have it.

Pricing has been confirmed as $299 and $379 for the 80 and 101 G9 Turbo 16GB models, respectively. this takes the spot of the original 1.0 GHz 80 G9, which never saw release here, and is just a $10 premium over the non-Turbo 101 G9. Archos will also be offering a free case and free shipping on both devices when they go on sale next week.

PC sales slow while tablet sales skyrocket, firm ...

PC shipments in the second quarter of this year grew by 2.6 percent worldwide, missing IDC’s modest forecast of 2.9 percent, the research firm said this week. Meanwhile, worldwide shipments of tablets skyrocketed 303.8 percent year over year, IDC said.

The trends show just how much the technology world is shifting toward devices like the Apple iPad, which is driving tablet sales. IDC said Apple’s market share grew from 65.7 percent in the first quarter to 68.3 percent in the second quarter of this year.

“While consumers have pulled back in part due to economic circumstances, consumer PCs have also suffered due to a relative lack of compelling offerings,” IDC analyst Jay Chou said in a news release. “With the excitement of mini notebooks (netbooks) largely past, the PC industry has struggled to come up with compelling features to keep buyer interest, and has subsequently suffered some budget-competition from smart phones as well as media tablets.”

The research firm now expects PC sales to grow by just 2.8 percent this year, down from its previous growth forecast of 4.2 percent. In mature markets such as the United States, PC shipments aren’t expected to reach 2010 levels until 2013, IDC said.

Worldwide, total PC shipments are expected to hit 356.9 million this year, IDC said. Meanwhile, the firm now expects 62.5 million tablets to be shipped worldwide this year, up from a previous 2011 forecast of 53.5 million.

But while the iPad has a strong lead in the tablet market, the field of alternatives appears to be fickle. Google’s market share with its Android operating system fell from 34 percent in the first quarter to 26.8 percent, largely due to the release of Research in Motion’s PlayBook, IDC said. Android will drop again in the third quarter to 23 percent, IDC expects, as consumers scoop up Hewlett-Packard’s TouchPad, which has been discounted to $99 as HP figures out the future of its PC business.

“Apple’s iOS share will continue to lead by more than 40 percentage points over Google’s Android for the remainder of the year, but we expect Apple’s share to fall closer to 50 percent by the end of the forecast period as manufacturers bring new tablets to market,” IDC analyst Jennifer Song said in a news release.

As such, it looks as though there is still room for formidable iPad competitors in the tablet market. Microsoft is looking to make a big splash with Windows 8, but the new operating system isn’t expected to launch for another year. Will it be too late?
