UK Motorola Xoom users finally get their hands on Ice Cream Sandwich

While U.S. users happily settle into Jelly Bean on their WIFI versions of the Motorola Xoom, the UK is just now finally getting its hands on an Ice Cream Sandwich update. the update brings the UK Motorola Xoom up to speed with Android 4.0.4, which is a big upgrade from Honeycomb, but still not nearly as satisfying as a jump to Jelly Bean would have been.

So why the different release frames between the UK and the U.S.? In the States, the Motorola Xoom WIFI is sold as a Google Experience Device, meaning it gets similar ‘early dibs’ rights that you’d find with any other Nexus device, whereas the Xoom in the UK isn’t.

I suppose it’s better late…

Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition Could Hurt Nexus ...

Since Samsung is gearing their tab toward students it might be a better deal.the Nexus devices does not support WPA/WPA2 Enterprise WiFi (I contacted Google support), used in many colleges, universities & schools.you could add a 32GB SDHC to a Samsung Tab for $20 or less, so storage is not an issue.I have both devices and the both perform very good, most people will not see the deference in performance. Google support conversation: (for real and the person did not have a accent)me: hi, I am not able to connect to WPA/WPA2 Enterprise WiFi networks.Google: are you able to connect at McDonald’s? because if you do the problem is not with the Nexus device.me: I have not been around a McDonald’s since I got the device. I usually do not frequent that place.Google: is the device connecting to your home WiFi?me: Yes. Google: the device works and the problem is with your enterprise network.me: I have tried several devices (Samsung Nexus phone, Samsung Tab, Asus Transformer, etc) and they all connect, so the network is working just fine.We went back and forth and he put me on hold…came back after a minute.Google: Sorry for putting you on hold but I was told that the Asus Nexus 7 does not support WPA/WPA2 Enterprise WiFi.me: Thanks…Have a nice day.

Apple hints the release date of the new mini iPad ...

A domain name squatter who bought the domain iPad3.com is not a happy man. Apple took that domain away. however, his sad story is a probable sign that Apple will soon release a new mini-tablet called iPad3.

Rumors have been around for nearly a year that Apple had plans to release a new iPad. What Apple needed, though, was a push to get rolling, analysts said. Google’s recent announcement that it planned to release the Nexus 7 tablet apparently got the ball going.

Rumors are now flying fast and thick that Apple is ready to push out its new mini iPad. A check of various rumor mills, web sites and newspapers shows at least five rock-solid indicators that Apple will release this new tablet in time for Christmas, or perhaps a tad sooner.

Here are the five credible signs that Apple is preparing to build the mini iPad3.

1. The iPad3.com domain name has now been transferred from the domain name squatter to Apple lawyers after Apple made a successful claim through the World Intellectual Property Organization.

2. Apple watcher and stock market pro Brian White has made a bullish prediction that Apple stock will hit $1001 by the year’s end.

3 The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is presently working with LG display in South Korea and Au Optronics in Taiwan. both companies supply screens.

4. Apple’s tablet market share dropped to 55 percent in the last quarter of 2011, motivating the company to enter the mini-tablet market now.

5. ln a July 4 article at Bloomberg.com, the writers claimed to have talked to Apple leakers who confirmed that the company will indeed release a mini-tablet in order to compete against Google, Amazon and Microsoft tablets.

Industry sources say that the new Apple tablet will measure about eight-inches diagonally. Apple’s most popular tablet is 10-inches. It’s an interesting development if for no other reason then Steve Jobs himself opposed a mini-tablet. Jobs had previously said that the seven-inch screen was too small to properly “express the software.” Jobs stressed that Apple was a software company and that software strategies came first.

He called the mini-tablet a “tweener,” meaning it was too big to be an iPhone but also too small to be a tablet. Jobs simply rejected that format. Another rumor making itself known is that the indium gallium zinc oxide display by Sharp will debut on the new mini iPad. It’s a brighter and thinner technology that should suit the smaller iPad well. Cunrently, Apple is holding about 62 percent of the tablet market.

The debut of the $199 Kindle during the 2011 holiday season deeply cut into that number and knocked Apple’s tablet share down to 55 percent.

Industry watchers say that this shocker may have motivated Apple to seriously consider offering a tablet now to compete in the mini—tablet market. The impending market for tablets could hit 347 million units in 2012 and more than double that number to 809 million units by 2017 according to a report in the Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report. Market watchers said that this report makes it clear why new players like GoogIe’s Nexus 7, priced at $199, are jumping into the market. Analysts are speculating that the new mini-iPad will cost about $250.

If Apple releases the mini-iPad, it would compete against Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire. both run on Google’s Android operating system. one analyst is speculating that a mini-iPad could cut into the sales of Apple’s larger tablet.

Apple doesn’t fear upending its own products if the company can be assured of dominating the tablet market, said Frank Gillett, who is a top analyst at Forrester Research, in an article at PC World. Apple doesn’t want to leave an opening for Android to grab market share. The company is not interested in sharing and wants the whole apple, Gillett said. Asian sources said that Apple told component suppliers to prepare for the mass production of new tablets, according to the Wall Street Journal.

It’s believed that Apple has been testing a prototype since February. Apple’s competitors realize that the best strategy to enter the tablet market is to sell a device in a market niche where Apple isn’t present, analysts said. Microsoft’s Surface tablet will be targeting consumers who want to use Windows software. Google and Kindle are presenting a smaller tablet at a cheaper price than the iPad. Kindle had a good measure of success using that strategy last year. Google took notice and launched the Nexus 7 last month. Apple, of course, saw that strategy, too, which is why rumors of a new mini tablet are becoming actual evidence.

Under The Hood with Android 4.1, Jelly Bean

Google claims Android 4.1, aka Jelly Bean, is the fastest and smoothest version of Android yet. When we took a look at the first Jelly Bean-equipped tablet a couple of weeks back, the Nexus 7, we felt Jelly Bean had a lot to offer users, both in terms of performance enhancements as well as new functionality. Here, we’ll take a closer look at some of the new and improved features that come with Jelly Bean.

Jelly Bean is Inherently faster – One of the goals Google had while creating Android 4.1 was to improve upon the user experience by making the mobile OS feel fast and smooth. in this regard, Jelly Bean is most certainly faster than its older brother, Ice Cream Sandwich. in real-world usage, we felt the Nexus 7 was smooth and very responsive, just as we’d expect from Jelly Bean. Google has a cool video that compares the speed of Jelly Bean with Ice Cream Sandwich if you’d like to see the differences for yourself. Check it out below.

Behind the scenes, Jelly Bean is designed to instantly boost the frequency of your device’s CPU the moment the screen is touched, to enable a faster response. Recognizing that you don’t need the CPU boost all of the time, the OS will turn the CPU clock down when it’s not needed to save battery life, as is the case with other versions of Android as well.

Jelly Bean Notifications With Actions – Google also improved the notification shade in Jelly Bean by adding actions and expansion options to the notifications. When you pull down the notification bar for example, you’ll notice the first notification is expanded. This is helpful if you want to see the first few sentences of an email, for example. you can expand and condense other notifications as well.

You’ll also notice that different notifications have different actionable items. For example, depending on the notification, you can set a reminder, email guests related to a calendar event, call someone back if you missed their call, and much more.

The new notifications bar is also customizable to the extent that you can pinch to zoom or use two-finger swipe on individual notifications to see more or less information. As with Ice Cream Sandwich, you can dismiss notifications one by one by swiping them off the screen as well.

Apple’s effort to ban Motorola tablets ...

BERLIN — A German court has dismissed an Apple (AAPL) lawsuit seeking to ban the sale of Motorola’s Xoom tablet computer throughout the European Union.

In its case, Cupertino-based Apple claimed the Motorola product infringed its intellectual property because its design was too similar to the iPad.

In its verdict Tuesday, the court in the western city of Duesseldorf also rejected a request by Google (GOOG)-owned Motorola to declare Apple’s so-called Community design rights for the iPad invalid.

Community design rights are meant to protect the distinctive appearance of industrial products.

Apple and Motorola have clashed repeatedly over intellectual property issues.

The companies have 30 days to appeal the verdict to a higher court.

In-Depth Review: Auralux for Tegra 3 Exclusive ...

Available on: Android Tegra 3 Devices

Price: Free, In-App Purchases

Download: Google Play

After being able to get the ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T the first thing I did was pick up the exclusive Tegra 3 app called Auralux. Auralux is a very simplistic and minimalistic game that is extremely and I mean extremely addicting. Though it is minimalistic and very simple it’s one of the best games I have ever played on the Android operating system. when it comes to graphics it’s not a huge part of the game, in fact there are very little visuals aside from your planet and units. the visuals that are in the game are very beautiful, detailed and extremely vibrant making for some visuals that don’t get old.

Graphics:

As said before, all the colors in the game are minimalist and very simplistic. You’ll only be working with two objects which are your planets and your units. Even though Auralux is simplistic all the colors in the game are very vibrant.  War Drum Studios, the developers of Auralux, did a fantastic job on the graphics and I really can’t believe they call these graphics minimalist. sure there aren’t a whole lot of visuals in the game, but both the gameplay and the relaxing soundtrack make up for the lack of graphical content in Auralux.

When it comes to the graphics it’s obvious that many people might be turned off due to their liking and style but as a personal opinion, these graphics are fantastic. War Drum Studios did a fantastic job in this specific area of the game.

Audio:

War Drum Studios says that Auralux is meant to be a relaxing and stress free game. It’s supposed to unwind you from a very long day of work or just traveling around. sure, the gameplay helps with a lot of that, but the Audio is also very, very relaxing. for myself, I found the game to be very relaxing, especially after playing for around an hour straight. the audio isn’t full of some epic score but follows up with what War Drum Studios claims to be a minimalist and simplistic game. the music is very soothing and relaxing to the point that I would actually be interested in buying the tracks on a CD.

When it comes to genre, I feel like it’s a mix of a very light dubstep and techno mixed together. It’s very fluid with the gameplay and lives up to any expectations I had from it. the game definitely lives up to simplistic and minimalistic audio. both in menu screens and in the many different levels the game offers players. each level actually does not have its own soundtrack though. It’s still quite soothing and relaxing but you won’t be experiencing any new score or track per level. since the game has 18 levels both extremely difficult and extremely easy it’s understandable as to why the game wouldn’t have a separate soundtrack for each and every level.

Overall the music is fantastic. It’s very soothing and relaxing and is also fluid, thus going very well with the gameplay.

Gameplay:

The gameplay itself I found to be very simplistic. It’s very easy to pick up and there’s even a very short tutorial to guide you on how to play the game. some games aren’t very fun when there’s this simple, but as I said in the beginning of this review, the game is extremely and I mean extremely addicting to play. I often find that it’s a very hard game to put down. what I think actually makes this game fun is the many aspects of strategy that were developed into the game. not only that, but they did a fantastic job integrating the strategy aspects into the game. It wasn’t half way done. I can definitely say that War Drum Studios did not cut corners when it came to Auralux.

The goal of the game is to simply conquer the other planets or “Suns.” You have units that spawn every second from the sun and with those units you have to conquer and capture other planets. each planet you capture will generate more units every second. if you don’t use correct strategy the AI will take over these planets and generate so many units that they will conquer you with ease.

Depending on the planets you take over, there may or may not be rings around the planet. Those rings indicate that the planet can be upgraded. These rings aren’t on every planet so you won’t be able to do it all the time. each upgrade will generate more units every second. the first upgrade will generate two units every second, the third upgrade three units every second and so on. It makes for some very strategic gameplay.

What’s really fun is when you purchase the Tegra exclusive levels and the levels become about 10x more massive than what the normal levels are. this requires a whole lot more complexity and strategy to the game. There’s a lot of DLC for this game which you can often buy in packages, so after you finish the free levels you’ll be able to buy everything for $2.99. the Tegra levels aren’t included in the pack so you’ll have to shell out another $1.99 for those.

Honestly, the game is well worth it. I found that each level had its own uniqueness and fun aspect to it instead of just playing the same thing over and over again. the levels are also very creative. War Drum Studios developed the levels in a way that the planets could like a Spiral, Grid or even an orb.

It’s all very creative and you can definitely tell all of the work that went into the game. the gameplay is relaxing as the developers have said. I’d argue that they aren’t very relaxing but tenser on the levels that are labeled “Insane.” That’s to be expected though, especially if you really start getting into the core aspects of the game. It’s quite a challenge and a challenge that I really, really like.

Final Words:

The game is very well built and the overall quality of Auralux is superb, fantastic even. most games are kind of difficult to play if you’re playing it on your lap without a proper surface. I think that most people will enjoy this game a lot more if they have a dock to keep the tablet (which this game is developed for) upright.

Aside from that, I love Auralux and would suggest it to anyone that owns a Tegra 3 device. best of all, a lot of the game is free so you’ll be able to experience the full aspect of it before bothering to purchase any of the DLC War Drum Studios offers.

Nexus 7? Wait: Google's Motorola Xoom + Jelly ...

Motorola Mobility — which is now owned by Google — will soon release its existing Xoom tablet running Android 4.1, also known as Jelly Bean.

It’s hard to read Google on how big that launch will be, but one would expect quite a bit of noise given that it will be Motorola’s first tablet release under Google ownership.

Motorola and Google PR departments say Jelly Bean will be offered on Motorola’s Xoom in the coming weeks. It has started rolling out and will be offered on the existing tablet hardware more generally soon,  they say.

Really? no tweaks to the CPU? no special hardware hooks exploting the “Butter” performance gains and UI advances in Android 4.1? no big hoopla? why the big drumbeat for Nexus 7  but not Xoom?

Let’s be clear. Motorola’s Droid not only put Android on the map in the smartphone space — it paved the way for perhaps the most successful commercial open source project in history.

Android is Linux for the smartphone/tablet industry. Red Hat Enterprise Linux and other Linux varients are huge in the server and embedded markets, but this incarnation of Linux for the tablet is huge. Xoom is more of a competitor to iPad 2 than the Nexus 7. So why is Google so seemingly cavalier about this coming tablet release?

Of course, Google wants to be careful not to ruffle the feathers of its tablet OEM partners as it considers how it proceeds forward with its new identity as a tablet manufacturer — and competitor to those partners.

Sources also remind me this is the first official release of Xoom under Google ownership. The deal only closed in late may, after all.

So Google may be mum on this front to calm anxious OEMs and/or because it hasnt yet developed the next gen blueprint for Xoom.

Nevertheless, I think the next Xoom launch with Jelly Bean will be huge, considering the recent launch of Google Handwrite for better tablet search and especially the “Butter” performance and UI improvements that will hopefully make Android a far more compelling choice in the tablet market.

I’ve owned several Droids and basically like them, but am constantly frustrated by latency issues, performance problems and user interface shortcomings. It is simply not as seamless and elegant as Apple’s iOS on the iPhone and iPad. For that reason, I have refrained from buying an Android-based tablet.

I, like many others, are awaiting a more mature Andoid experience — like the one promised by Jelly Bean — on a full featured tablet that not only crushes the Kindle but also goes nose to nose with the iPad2.

I am waiting for Xoom 2.X or 3. I realize Google will continue to promote its ecosystem of OEMs and developers (the new 4.1 SDK came out recently) fairly. and the availability of Android as an open source project naturally levels the playing field.

But I am awaiting the Xoom specifically — not simply because Motorola Mobility is owned by Google. Motorola on its own is largely responsible for Andoid’s smartphone success and hopefully (and especially) with Google ownership it will drive Android’s success in the tablet market.

All is quiet out of Google and Motorola camps on that front — for now.  The next Xoom with Android 4.1 might just be pushed out soon with little fanfare, like the new Droids, while the next generation tablet is under development.

The future of Android rests on its success in the tablet market and it looks to be a two-horse race in this market as well. all OEM partners will have a shot at the Android 4.1 code. but make no mistake: lots of eyes and ears are focused on what’s coming next ouf of this independent entity of Google on the tablet front.

Make it fast, cheap and good: Google’s ...

It shouldn’t really have been a surprise when Google announced that Asus would be manufacturing the Nexus 7 Android tablet. Google has shown a willingness to work with various partners in the past, choosing HTC to make the original Nexus One and then switching to Samsung for the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus. You might expect them to announce a partnership with Motorola at some point, considering the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, but for now Asus is the manufacturer of choice.

The resulting tablet offers unbeatable specs for the price. the Nexus 7 may not be an iPad killer but at $199 for the 8GB version and $249 for the 16GB model it certainly is an attractive prospect. Consumers seem to think so too with reports of strong sales.

Working with Google

Benjamin Yeh, Asus’ Head of UK and Nordic Markets, spoke to Forbes recently and revealed some interesting tidbits about how the Nexus 7 came about. Apparently the device was cooked up at CES in January and it went into mass production in may. They had just four months to design and build a lightweight, but powerful, 7-inch Android tablet that could really make the most of the software.

Yeh told Forbes “For a mass-market device, from concept to mass production, we’re talking about six to twelve months. Six months is very tight…”

Fast and cheap, is it good as well?

The challenge of coming up with the Nexus 7 in such a short timescale was clearly daunting.

Yeh says “The device had to be thin and light, with a weight under 340 grams. so to get that lightness, normally the CPU would be small [low-powered]. But to get media playback, and particularly high definition media, the processor has to be powerful. the strong CPU in a very small space is difficult. And also the screen: you want it to be very responsive and also to have multitouch. so normally the LCD should be thick.”

Yeh also spoke about the display and the unusual lamination process “The traditional way to make a tablet touchscreen actually uses four pieces of glass…..with the one glass solution, we put together the protective glass and the sensor glass. so the sensor is just a film attached to the glass, to make it thinner. And that also makes it lighter.”

You have to wonder if the reported Nexus 7 screen separation issue or the ghosting issues have something to do with the unique design process. perhaps the rush to market resulted in a less than perfect device. Although, it is worth pointing out that neither issue is particularly serious.

It may not be perfect but you won’t get a better Android tablet for your money than the Nexus 7. for Google and Asus to produce something this desirable in such a short space of time is truly impressive.
