The Top 5 Tablet Computers in 2011

If you’re in the market for a tablet computer, this quick review of the top five models will give you a place to start.

The Apple iPad 2 is the best-selling tablet on the market. A faster dual-core Apple A5 processor, better graphics, twin cameras, and a 33-percent thinner design than the original in combination to the huge app store selection set the iPad2 apart from the competition. The 9.7 inch display with 768 X 1024 pixels falls short of the Motorola Xoom. However, the 10-hour battery life, iTunes, and the best selection of apps, make the iPad 2 the tablet to beat.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is one of the best android tablets available. The hardware is sleek, light and has a great 10.1 inch-screen. The dual-core processors boot up smoothly and quickly. The updated Honeycomb OS easily loads web pages, plays video and multiple apps. The built-in cameras and speakers get the job done. The only drawback is the lack of USB, HDMI, and SD card slots. The versatile Galaxy Tab is only limited by the current lack of android apps.

The PlayBook by RIM has a browser that puts the Web in your hands. Coming in at just 0.9 pounds, 0.4 inches thin, and with a 7 inch-screen, the PlayBook is actually, truly portable. Aided by Adobe Flash 10.2 support, the QNX-powered OS loads sites in full desktop splendor. The dual-core processor lets you multitask on a high resolution display with more pixels than an iPad. With full HD playback, an HDMI out, and with cameras front and back, the PlayBook packs a lot into a little space.

The Motorola Xoom, although a little heftier than its main competition, is gaining in popularity. This tablet boasts a 10.1 inch-screen with the same 1280 X 800 resolution as a laptop. The super-fast dual-core processors run Honeycomb OS and support 4G download/upload speeds. One drawback is the built in speakers. However, when you couple the 10 hours of video playback with the dual cameras and micro HDMI slot, the Xoom is one cool tablet.

HP TouchPad, a full-sized tablet, is larger and heavier than most of its rivals. The 9.7″ IPS display with a 4:3 aspect ratio and 768 X 1024 pixels is the same as the iPad 2. The display is detailed enough for fine text, has great viewing angles, but low brightness makes it difficult to view in full sun. The TouchPad comes with a micro USB port, stereo speakers of good quality, but surprisingly, only one camera. The Snapdragon processor doesn’t load as fast as the competition, but performs adequately for most applications.

So if you’re looking for looking for tablet pc, these tablets are five of the best on the market in 2011.

Acer Iconia Tab A510 10in Android review • Reg ...

In my view, the 16GB Google Nexus 7 is pretty much the ideal Android tablet, but if that form factor is too small for you, then you might be interested in what Acer has cooked up lately. Say hello then to the Iconia Tab A510. Targeted at those who want a quad-core machine, it offers a 10.1in screen, 32GB of storage and for a reasonable price – around £320 if you look hard enough.

Tegra 3 tablet: Acer’s Iconia Tab A510

Externally Acer could have been a little more adventurous with the design. As it is the A510 looks very similar to the Tegra 2-based A500. At over 10mm thick and weighing 680g it’s not particularly slender or light but the dimpled back makes it comfortable to hold and it feels very solid.

With tablets now looming on the horizon with 1080p screen resolutions the A510’s 1280 x 800 panel may seem a bit old-fashioned and the pixel density of 140ppi can’t match the Nexus 7’s 216ppi. Still, it looks perfectly crisp and clear to my eyes and the dpi number is better than the similarly priced 16GB iPad 2′s figure of 132ppi.

Olympic fondleslab, anyone?

Of course, the A510 can still play 1080p video with perfect ease and throw a full-HD feed out over its micro HDMI port. the 5MP camera at the back is nothing special but it can at least record 1080p video while the 1MP webcam works a treat with Skype and can record video at 720p.

The screen itself is a simple TFT LCD panel rather than an AMOLED or IPS affair. this means it’s not quite as bright or vivid as some of the opposition, nor does it support such wide viewing angles. but again, to get a better screen you need to spend more money and frankly if you are planning on using your tablet predominantly indoors and on your own the A510 is more than adequate.

Acer Iconia Tab A700

With the release of the new iPad, Apple threw down the tablet screen clarity gauntlet, by packing over 3 million pixels into a 9.7-inch display. Now, the first 10-inch Android tablet to break the 1,280×800-pixel barrier (the Toshiba Excite 13 runs at 1,600×900 pixels), the Acer Iconia Tab A700, goes on sale today for $449.

Design The Acer Iconia Tab A700 is quite similar in design to the Iconia Tab A510. As such, the design and features sections here follow that review very closely.

The A700′s left and right edges are adorned with silver plating; the back feels like a mixture of rubber and leather (in a good way), making the tablet easy to grip; the corners are well-rounded, and the tablet just feels comfortable to hold. from a purely aesthetic standpoint, however, the A510 looks dull and sort of boxy compared with more stylish tablets.

On the left edge sits the power/lock button and a headphone jack. On the opposite edge is a Micro-HDMI port and a door covering a 64GB-capacity microSD slot. On the top edge, from left to right, lies a volume rocker, a rotation lock switch, and a microphone pinhole. a 1-megapixel camera sits in the middle of the top bezel with an ambient light sensor to its left. Software features The A700 comes preinstalled with Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Check out the Ice Cream Sandwich section of the Iconia Tab A200 review for detailed info on the improvements Android 4.0 makes over Honeycomb (Android 3.0).

With the A700, Acer includes a number of custom software features that those familiar with previous Acer tablets should recognize. Chief among them is Acer Ring. Ring is an app shortcut and carousel-like bookmark hub that appears after you tap the green ring symbol at the bottom of the screen. Acer Print is a built-in setting that allows you to add printers either through your network or by bar code scan, and then print directly from the tablet.

Hardware features The A700 is Acer’s second tablet, after the A510, to house Nvidia’s quad-core processor, the Tegra 3. it includes a 1.3GHz version of the processor, compared with the 1.2GHz version found in the Asus TF300. The A700 also includes 1GB of DDR2 RAM — as opposed to the faster DDR3 RAM also used in the TF300. only one 32GB-capacity configuration is currently available.

As mentioned, it very closely mimics the design of other recent Acer tablets, with its screen being the one, true standout feature. Most 10-inch Android tablets sport a resolution of 1,280×800 pixels (16:10 aspect ratio), while the iPad 2 runs at 1,024×768 pixels (4:3).

The A700 is the first Android tablet with a 1,920×1,200-pixel (16:10) screen resolution. However, while impressive, compared with previous Android tablets, this comes nowhere near the pixel density of the new iPad’s 2,048×1,536-pixel (4:3) screen. Still, I did notice a definite clarity upgrade when viewing text on the Web compared with 1,280×800-pixel screens.

Price as reviewed: $449.00

Archos G9 Tablet: A Review

Archos G9 tablets have become one of the most affordable choices if you cannot swallow the value of a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 or an Apple iPad. the best way to get an Android Ice Cream Sandwich tablet is perhaps the Archos 101 G9 and Archos 80 G9 tablets.

Specifications The Archos 101 G9 tablet measures 276 x 167 x 13mm and weighs 649g only. It runs on Android 4.0 ICS with a 1.5 GHz ARM Cortex processor, has a 512 MB RAM and 8 to 16 GB storage memory. the 10.1-inch tablet has 1280 x 800 pixels resolution and uses LED TFT touch technology. Meanwhile, the Archos 80 G9 is the 8-inch slate, which will also run on Android 4.0. the display touch screen uses MVA LCD technology and has a display resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. the processor is a 1 GHz dual core ARM Cortex A9 processor. Both the models support Bluetooth, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, GPS, and HDMI out port. There is a 1.3 MP camera with autofocus and ability to record videos at 720p.

Pros and Cons

The tablet has a large display whether it is 8 inch or the still larger 10.1-inch screen for tablets 7-inch display is the normal norm. the Archos tablet is comparatively inexpensive than similar products. however, does it matter? all that is accomplished is that it runs the latest Android version and plays 1080p videos properly. Overall, it is a fabulous device.

However, even with large displays the resolution is not any bigger than usual. moreover, the larger displays mean that you could not carry around in your jacket pocket as you can do with the 7-inch one. Nevertheless, the video playback is not properly synched, and the processing speed is on the low side. The external design is also not something to write about.

Lenovo launches new Ivy Bridge U310 and U410 ...

Lenovo has unveiled two new laptops in its latest attempt to shake up the ultrabook market.

The IdeaPad U310 and U410 ultrabooks come equipped with the latest Intel Ivy Bridge chips, offering a choice of the Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processor.

The U310 (PDF) comes with a high-definition 13.3-inch 1,366×768 pixel screen. Weighing in at 3.75 pounds, it offers up to seven hours of battery life. Buyers can choose between a conventional hard drive with as much as 500 gigabytes of space or a solid-state drive with up to 32GB. An optical USB drive is also part of the package. Memory can go as high as 4GB.

The integrated video graphics are courtesy of Intel’s GMA HD 3000. Connections include two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, an HDMI port, and a reader for SD and MMC cards.

The retail price for the U310 starts at $749.

The beefier U410 (PDF) offers a high-definition 14-inch 1,366×768 pixel screen. This ultrabook weighs 4.19 pounds but offers up to nine hours of battery life. Hard drive choices range from a 1TB conventional drive to the 32GB SSD. and buyers can opt for as much as 8GB of RAM.

The graphics also raise the bar with an Nvidia GeForce 610M card with 1GB of memory. otherwise, most of the other specs are similar to those of the U310.

The U410 kicks off with a price of $799 for the basic model.

Lenovo is also touting the integrated speakers of both machines, equipped with Dolby Home Theater for better sound quality. the Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) technology can wirelessly display videos and other content on a big screen. the U310 and U410 are optimized with Lenovo’s Enhanced Experience 3 to enable faster bootups and quicker returns from sleep mode.

Both models will be for sale on Lenovo’s Web site this week. later this month, the two will reach the shelves of major retailers across the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Russia, India, China, and Japan.

Lenovo is one of many vendors promoting ultrabooks as the latest concept to woo computer buyers. With PC sales hurting, the industry is pushing the light and thin appeal of ultrabooks as one way to revive business.

“Ultrabooks are an industry game changer that shift not only the way people think about laptop design, but also how much performance technology can be packed into such a thin and light device,” Peter Hortensius, president of Lenovo’s Product Group, said in a statement.

Hortensius believes that ultrabooks will benefit from price drops and the launch of Windows 8.

“We are bullish on where these kinds of products will go,” Hortensius said, according to Computerworld. “They will come in the sub-$800 category so they will be much more affordable.”

Ultrabooks should also take advantage of some of the new features and capabilities in Windows 8, leading Hortensius to believe that customers will gravitate toward Windows 8-enabled ultrabooks.

“Historically when you look at transitions, consumers switch quickly because they want the latest and greatest,” he added, according to Computerworld.
