Sony Xperia Tablet Leaked

The Tablet P and Tablet S marked Sony’s first attempt at the tablet segment and though both were pretty solid and thoroughly innovative, none made a big enough impact on the market. that might change though with the second generation of tablet devices Sony is readying supposedly for a launch during the holidays. Also, in another interesting development, Sony has moved its entire tablet operations into the Xperia brand that until now comprised of only its smartphone range.

Now coming to the upcoming Xperia Tablet (that is what it is referred to until it gets its official name) specs, things are definitely a notch higher than Sony’s first gen devices. Powered by the latest NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad core processor, the device will come with 1 GB of RAM and will be available in three memory size variants of 16, 32, and 64 GB. The tablet would sport two cameras, with the one at the rear being a 8 megapixel lens and a 1 megapixel unit making up the front.

Further, the Xperia Tablet will continue with a 9.4 inch display and a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. A battery of 6,000 mAh rating will be providing the juice, which Sony has stated will be good enough to support around 10 hours of operation. Also, the Xperia Tablet will run Android 4.0 ICS, though we hope Sony changes its mind and offers Jelly Bean right out of the box.

Another interesting fact about the upcoming tablet is that while Sony isn’t giving up on the wedge shape of Tablet S that had made it unique, the entire thing has been shaved down considerably to make it what Sony is claiming to be 42 percent slimmer. It’s not going to be more than 12 mm at its thickest point, though the tablet will continue to resemble a folded magazine, which in turn makes it quite convenient to hold and operate.

The price of the tablet is expected to be $449 for the 16 GB model when it hits the market, with the subsequent 32 and 64 GB variants likely to cost $549 and $649 respectively. There is, however, no confirmation on the exact date of the tablets‘ arrival at the market, though the holidays are the expected time frame.

There will also be optional items at the time of launch for consumers to choose if they wish. for instance, there is going to be a keyboard folio like the one that comes with the Microsoft Surface tablet costing $99, a docking stand which comes for $99, and docking speaker for $119. There is also a stand that is relatively cheaper at $25. The tablet has one added feature worth mentioning and that being the shared mode of operating the tablet by more than one user termed the “Guest mode.”

Further, with the tablet coming from Sony, it’s expected that the device will be PlayStation certified. what this means is that users will be able to download and play PlayStation games on the tablet itself.

Expect more of the device in the coming months.

Dell Streak 7 offered by Currys for just $160, ...

Are you wondering what to do with all of the money you got for the holidays? I know it can be a tough decision, but I'm here to help you; that is, if you live in the UK. Currys is offering up the Dell Streak 7 for just £99.97, which equates to about $160 stateside. unfortunately, you have to go pick the tablet up in-store.

Still, for that amount of money, it's a pretty awesome deal. the Streak 7, although discontinued, is still one of the better tablets that you can buy. It's got Honeycomb, a Tegra 2, and a sturdy design that will last through plenty of drops and dings.

Let us know how easy it is to get your new tablet in the comments.

[Currys] thanks, Themanii!

Motorola Bows New Tablets; Better Than iPad, Fire?

A day after Dell ended online sales of its 7-inch Streak tablet leaving the tablet PC field pretty much to iPad and its two e-reader competitors from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, Motorola has quietly announced the replacement for its disappointing Xoom tablet – the Xyboard.

Xyboard will come in two screen sizes, 10.1 and 8.2 inches, starting at $529.99 and $429.99 respectively with a two-year contact – the former $30 more than iPad, the latter $230 more than the Amazon Kindle Fire. the 16 GB models are priced at $629.99 and $529.99, respectively for the 32 GB models and

While Motorola said its new Xyboard tablets would be in Verizon stores “just in time for the holidays,” neither company announced a specific on-sale date.

What’s new/different

What, therefore, given that iPad has proven to be superior to all other big-screen Android alternatives and that fire seems to satisfy those who don’t want to spend more than twice the money on an iPad, do the Xyboards have that iPad or fire don’t have?

This speedy connectivity is the highlight of a slew of impressive technical specifications: 1.2 GHz processor (same as iPad), 1 GB of RAM (allowing for more programs to be running simultaneously and twice as much as iPad), Android 3.2 Honeycomb (the latest version), 5 MP rear camera (iPad 2 just .92 MP) with a flash, 1.3 MP front camera (twice as much resolution as iPad 2′s), with pre-installed Quickoffice HD and more. With an app called Dijit, Xyboard also doubles as a universal remote+electronic program guide for your TV, DVR and Blu-ray or DVD player.

But I wouldn’t buy one, nor could I recommend buying one instead of either an iPad 2 or a Kindle fire – or a Barnes & Noble Tablet.

What Motorola hasn’t figured out

For folks who actually shell out money for these expensive toys, a tablet-buying decision is not and has never been about specs. nearly every Android tablet produced has had specs superior to iPad, which is how their makers justify charging more for their tablet wares than Apple.

But no Android tablet has captured iPad’s overall experience or has equaled Apple’s ecosystem advantage. and I see nothing in Xyboard (at least from the press release) other than improved specs, pre-installed business-centric apps that suggested Xyboards are aimed more for the commercial customer, and faster connectivity to differentiate it substantially from the Xoom (although I hope to get more information before committing a final adjudication).

Plus, it isn’t clear that a tablet needs either to have a constant Internet connection, regardless of speed, to be functional, or a camera of any kind since a tablet is awkward to wield as an imaging device (and there isn’t an indication that Xyboard captures video of any kind). Neither the Kindle fire nor the Barnes & Noble, for instance, include a camera, and at least Amazon is expected to sell nearly four million Fires by the end of the year.

Plus, you’ll have to commit to a two-year contract to get Xyboard at iPad 2-plus prices. Considering how quickly tablets are evolving, do you want to be stuck paying for a Xyboard for the next two years?

No, Motorola and other non-e-reader Android tablet makers are going do something more than slather on the specs if they’re going to interest us in a tablet other than iPad.

do you have an iPad or iPad 2? Why did you choose it over a competing tablet?

Motorola announces new 4G tablets in hopes of ...

The Apple iPad is still the number one selling tablet on the market and the Amazon Kindle Fire is doing just as well.  Earlier this week, Motorola announced the release of two new tablets with 4G support.  Recently, Dell has announced they will be stopping the sale of the 7-inch Dell Streak tablet and Motorola decided it was a good time to announce the replacement for its “wishy-washy” Xoom tablet.  the Xyboard is the new tablet from Motorola and it will come in two sizes, much like many other tablets these days and like start with a price around $429.99.

The Xyboard will be available in the 10.1-inch and 8.2-inch versions.  the price points are set at $429.99 for the smaller one and another $100 for the 10-inch version and those prices include a new two-year contract.  For about $30 more than the iPad or $230 more than the Kindle Fire, you can hook up with the next version of Xoom from Motorola.  if you want more internal storage for the Xyboard, you will pay more, up to $629.99 for the 32GB model.  both of the models are rumored to be ready for the holidays and on the shelf in your local Verizon Wireless store.  neither of the two companies has made an official “on sale” date at this time.

With a new version of the Xoom tablet coming, you can expect some changes.  One major change that will be noticed is the support for the 4G LTE network from Verizon.  the tablets will sport a 1.2 Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM and they will both be powered by Android 2.3, or Honeycomb.  the stats are quite comparable to the iPad for the most part, but the 1GB of RAM is double what you get with the iPad.  other specs include the 5MP camera with flash on the back side and the 1.3MP camera on the front for video chatting and more.  Quickoffice HD comes pre-installed on the Xyboard and an app called Dijit turns your Xyboard into a remote control for any TV, DVR or Blu Ray player.

With the Xoom being a disappointment to some, it looks like the tablet market might just wait to see how this one fares before getting all excited.  the price point is good, but comparable to the iPad 2, but the iPad 3 is right around the corner.

8-inch Motorola XOOM 2 outed in holiday print ad ...

It looks like the much-rumored XOOM 2 is spending the holidays in the Emerald Isle. a print ad from the Irish arm of Carphone Warehouse has outed the new Honeycomb tablet, this time in its smaller 8.2-inch form. The Wifi tablet will run you €399.90, or about $545 – US residents, remember that electronics are generally more expensive across the pond, so an American price of $450-$500 is more likely.

According to the ad, the Wifi version features Honeycomb 3.2 (not Ice Cream Sandwich) and “tethering capability”, though on a Wifi-only tablet, I’m not sure what good that’ll do. you can just barely make out a “16GB” in the tiny type, so it appears this smaller “Media Edition” will be the cheapest of the new XOOMs available. a 10-inch version is also in the works, but so far it hasn’t showed up outside of spy photos.

Both 8 and 10-inch versions of the next-generation XOOM have been spotted at the FCC and in in some leaked photos. Specifications are hard to come by, but a November release seems likely, and a Verizon LTE version should be available in addition to the standard Wifi. The design seems to have changed a lot since the original XOOM, with what looks like soft-touch plastic ringing a metal back, and tapered edges (like the DROID RAZR and Photon) to fend off Apple’s lawyers.
