High Resolution on an Android Tablet: Acer Iconia ...

Up until now, Android tablets have been stuck with relatively low screen resolutions. Most are 1024×768, and at best you see tablets with 1280×800 resolution. with resolutions such as these, pixels are big enough to where you can see individual pixels if you look closely. the new iPad showed us what happens when you shrink the size of each pixel (and add more of them): the results are transformative as content can look printed-on the display.

Acer is first out of the gate to launch an Android 4.0 tablet with a higher screen resolution. the Acer Iconia A700 packs 1920×1200 pixels, granting it a DPI of 224, which is not a far cry from the iPad’s 2048×1536 263 DPI display. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, which has a mere 149 DPI display, you can understand why we’re excited by what Acer has brought to the table.

Not only that, the A700 has plenty of power with a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU with 1GB of RAM, plus 32GB of storage.

Right now you can get an A700 for around $500 direct from Acer. Only a WiFi version is available at this time. More coming soon on the Iconia Tab A700!

The Macalope Weekly: Tablet trouble

Once again, Apple dorks, we see that there is nothing you can have that Windows OEMs cannot take away.

A leak to The Verge shows how Lenovo’s ThinkPad Tablet 2 beats the iPad for business. or, well, will totally beat the iPad for business—when it ships.

Wait, there was a ThinkPad Tablet 1?

Yep. an Android-based tablet to which CNet gave a compliment that’s the very definition of “backhanded.”

If your IT department could design a tablet, the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet would be it.

And the ThinkPad Tablet 2 is a continuation on the theme. It’s like Lenovo pulled a checklist out of a corporate IT white paper, handed it to engineers, and said “Make it.” then the company emailed the checklist to The Verge, which put it in their piece.

Are you ready for the iPad-killing?! Because here it comes.

Runs familiar PC apps and Metro—CHECK

As if anyone is familiar with Metro. Not surprisingly, the iPad fails the checkbox that includes the criterion: “Runs an operating system from Microsoft that only got released to manufacturers this week.”

Not surprisingly, the best-selling tablet in the corporate market—well, in every market—does not get a single check on this list.

Supports Active Directory—CHECK

Which you need because you’re stuck in an imaginary box of technology, like a corporate mime.

Domain Join & Group Policies—CHECK

Forget the fact that users love iPads, IT departments can’t apply cookie-cutter rules to them, so better to jam something they don’t like down their throats.

Manage Device with Windows 7 Tools—CHECK

OK, there’s really no point in continuing through this system admin’s fever dream. anyone can make a list of hoops that the iPad can’t jump through, but the one thing you won’t find on this list is “Users like it.”

Prepare for a great gnashing of teeth, because it looks like the iPad-killing isn’t going so well.

Once again going recklessly against the conventional wisdom, Apple has extended its lead in the tablet market to almost 70 percent, according to a report from IDC. Like it wasn’t high enough before.

The Macalope believes it’s instructive at times like these to go back and review what people were saying about Apple products in previous news cycles.

Sorry, did the Macalope say “instructive”? he meant “hilarious.” how embarrassing. however could he have made such a mistake? Hahaha!

Almost two years ago, it was clear that the iPad was doing pretty well. that is, unless you thought that netbooks were just super-awesome, like ABI’s Jeff Orr. back in 2010, Jeff was going to great pains to point out that the iPad wasn’t “all that,” nor “the bee’s knees,” because, as of May 2010, it had failed to match the first year of netbook sales.

“Apple has sold a few million iPads in its first quarter, which is great for creating a new market,” wrote ABI Research principal analyst Jeff Orr in a note today. “But early adoption of media tablets is not outpacing Netbooks.”

So, step down, girlfriend!

OK, OK. Fair enough. Say, Jeff, how many netbooks were sold in their first year?

Historically, looking back to 2008—the first year that Netbooks really came into vogue—Orr puts Netbook shipments at 15 million…

Wow! That’s a lot. Huh. Wonder how many iPads Apple sold in their first year?

Oh, that’s right, 15.43 million.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. All it did was effectively tie netbooks. Big whoop. in netbooks’ second year, they blew the doors off.

And this figure roughly doubled in 2009 to 30 million Netbooks shipped.

Ha! how many iPads did Apple sell in its second …

Yeah, it was 40 million. for 2010, Orr was predicting sales of netbooks would be 43 million. Jeff thought the sky was the limit for netbooks!

Aaaand here we are.

Orr was not alone in not being impressed by the iPad. CNet’s Molly Wood thought the Kindle fire would burn the iPad’s lunch and, yes, she even used the k-word.

“Kindle fire an iPad killer? yes. It’s the price, stupid”

Well, let’s leave it to a chastened Jeff Orr to tell Molly how that worked out.

“Jeff Orr, ABI Research: iPad Remains Dominant in 1Q’2012 while Kindle fire Fizzles”

Nicely done, Jeff! Glad to see you finally got the memo.

And, finally, it will come as no surprise that as late as March of 2011, PCWorld’s Katherine Noyes was insisting that tablets were just a fad and that she “fully expect[s] them to fade out of the mainstream over the next few years.” Apple, meanwhile, shipped 17 million iPads in the last quarter, an increase of 84 percent over the prior year.

Well, in Katherine’s defense, all those sales were to Apple fanbois who, as we all know, are well outside the open-source-loving mainstream.

When in business, it it advisable to follow rules that are simple for staffers to learn. This is best exemplified by those precepts that can be put into an easy-to-remember acronym. for example, anyone who’s seen the movie Glengarry Glen Ross knows that the paramount principle in real estate is ABC: “Always Be Closing.”

Interestingly enough, Microsoft also uses the ABC acronym. but in Redmond’s case it stands for “Always Be Confusing.”

ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley reports that after using the aforementioned “Metro” monicker for its tile-based interface since the introduction of Windows Phone 7, the company is now telling employees halt all internal and external use of the term.

According to the Verge, the transition comes after discussion with an important European partner; in the meantime, employees are being told to use “Windows 8 style UI” until the company picks a final name. Because that rolls so trippingly off the tongue.

Now, maybe Microsoft has its reasons. maybe “Metro” means something naughty in Flemmish involving a goat, a series of pulleys and levers, and a zeppelin. The Macalope’s not here to judge. Mock, yes, but not judge.

Having been an observer of Microsoft’s awesome naming conventions for a long time, the horny one would humbly submit the following suggestions that Microsoft might use in place of “Metro,” which clearly lacks the company’s particular je ne sais quoi.

(Non, vraiment, je ne sais pas quel est leur problème.)

Submitted for your approval: “Windows 8 Interfaces for User Systems 2012.”

OK, how about: “Windows Tile-Based Controls Display, Non-Embedded Systems”?

“Rectangular Responsive Windows Controls for Workgroups?”

Oh! Oh! “Advanced Windows TilesForSure Series 8!”

Well, whatever the company picks, it’s sure to be better than the catchy name the company’s already been using for years, and that people have come to know as one of the better things to issue from Redmond since, well, ever.

[Editors’ Note: each week the Macalope skewers the worst of the week’s coverage of Apple and other technology companies. in addition to being a mythical beast, the Macalope is not an employee of Macworld. As a result, the Macalope is always free to criticize any media organization. even ours.]

iPad market share q2 2012: Apple tops IDC's ...

According to data from market research firm IDC, worldwide tablet shipments are estimated to have reached 25 million units in the second quarter of 2012, an increase from 18.7 in the first quarter of 2012, representing 33.6% quarter-over-quarter growth. For the eighth consecutive quarter, Apple (AAPL) has shipped more tablets than any other manufacturer. the Cupertino-based company shipped a record 17 million iPads during the quarter, an increase from 11.8 million units in the first quarter of 2012, amounting to a 68.2% market share. Samsung (005930) experienced exceptional growth, more than doubling tablet shipments to 2.4 million units and capturing 9.6% of the market. Amazon (AMZN), whose Kindle fire tablet is only available in the U.S., shipped 1.2 million units and ASUS (2357) shipped 855,454 slates. Acer (2353) rounded out the top five and was the only company that showed a decline in tablet shipments, which slipped to 385,458 units from 629,222 units a year ago. IDC’s press release follows below.

Strong Apple Shipments Drive Robust Tablet Market Growth in second Quarter, According to IDC

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., August 2, 2012 – a record-setting quarter for Apple’s iPad led to a better-than-anticipated second quarter for the tablet market, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet Tracker. Total worldwide tablet shipments for the second quarter of 2012 (2Q12) are estimated at 25 million units; up from 18.7 in the first quarter of 2012. that represents a quarter-over-quarter increase of 33.6% and a robust year-over-year growth rate of 66.2%, up from 15 million units in the second quarter of 2011. IDC will release final shipment totals for the quarter later this month.

“Apple built upon its strong March iPad launch and ended the quarter with its best-ever shipment total for the iPad, outrunning even the impressive shipment record it set in the fourth quarter of last year,” said Tom Mainelli, research director, Mobile Connected Devices. “the vast majority of consumers continue to favor the iPad over competitors, and Apple is seeing increasingly strong interest in the device from vertical markets—especially education. While iPad shipment totals are beginning to slow a bit in mature markets where the device saw early traction, growth in other regions is clearly more than making up the difference.”

Apple shipped 17 million iPads during the quarter, up from 11.8 million units in 1Q12 and well above its previous record of 15.4 million in 4Q11. Apple wasn’t the only company to experience solid growth in the second quarter. Four of the top five worldwide vendors saw their shipments increase year over year. Samsung experienced exceptional growth, and landed in second place with 2.4 million units shipped, up from 1.1 million units a year ago. Amazon rebounded from a sluggish first quarter to post shipments of 1.2 million units (the company, which ships its fire tablet only in the U.S., entered the market in 4Q11). ASUS shipped 855,454 units, well above its total of 397,048 units a year ago. Finally, only fifth-placed Acer saw its year-over-year numbers decline, as it shipped 385,458 units this quarter, down from 629,222 units a year ago. It’s worth noting that shipments of the well-received Google/ASUS co-branded Nexus 7 aren’t reflected in these totals, as that product officially began shipping into the channel in the third quarter of 2012.

IDC expects competition in the tablet space to continue to heat up in the second half of 2012. “In addition to major new products from Amazon and quite likely Apple, we can also expect an influx of Microsoft Windows 8 and Windows RT-based tablets starting in late October,” said Bob O’Donnell, program vice president, Clients and Displays. “If anything, there’s a real risk that people will have too many options from which to choose this holiday season. Consumers baffled by the differences between Amazon and Google versions of Android, or Windows 8 and Windows RT, may well default to market leader Apple. or they may simply choose to remain on the sideline for another cycle.”

Microsoft Surface Tablet: Your Next Windows PC?

Windows 8: Have two apps on screen at once. Photographs by Melissa J. PerensonIf tablets are the rising stars of personal computing, then Apple’s iPad burns most brightly. But now, Microsoft is preparing to crash the party in spectacular fashion with a pair of tablets that represent its first-ever Windows hardware.

Microsoft wowed the tech-savvy audience, including me, with its introduction of Surface for Windows RT and Surface for Windows 8 Pro tablets. (For brevity, I’ll refer to them hereafter as Surface RT and Surface Pro.)

The folks in Redmond have spared no detail in reconsidering what a tablet can, and should, be. what caught our collective attention was Microsoft’s end-to-end vision, as seen in its design choices. this wasn’t just another humdrum tablet that Microsoft happened to introduce; Surface feels stylish, fresh, and exciting.

Surface RT runs on Nvidia’s ARM-based Tegra 3 platform and requires all-new apps that use the Windows 8 “Metro” interface; the Pro version uses Intel’s Core i5 and runs conventional Windows programs (as well as Metro apps). Microsoft says that Surface RT will be available when Windows 8 launches; the OS ships October 26. Surface Pro will follow a few months later.

Smooth: Surface has a highly stylized design. In taking the step to sell its own tablet hardware, Microsoft ensures that a flagship Windows 8 tablet will stand ready to compete against Apple’s iPad and the army of Google Android tablets, most of which have failed to find an audience. Based on Surface’s specs and my hands-on experience with a prototype of the Surface RT tablet, I expect Microsoft’s entry to leapfrog the largely undistinguished Android competitors and potentially pose a threat to Apple’s iPad hegemony.

First off, Surface has a striking look. the exterior magnesium alloy surface is silky smooth to the touch and finely finished; and the tablet feels solidly built and well balanced, whether held in one hand or two. While I wish it were slightly slimmer, its angled edges make it fairly comfortable to hold.

Microsoft’s thoughtful approach to design addresses many shortcomings common to today’s tablets. for example, rival tablets require you to buy a case with a kickstand or some other device if you want to prop it upright to share content or watch a movie; Surface comes with a sturdy built-in kickstand. the kickstand is a brilliant stroke of design—a practical yet stylish flourish we wouldn’t expect from Microsoft. I lifted the tablet up and held it by the kickstand almost automatically, without considering potential consequences, but I had nothing to fear: the kickstand’s unique hinge felt as stable as bedrock.

Kickstand: You get a pop-out kickstand, and USB.another significant step: for the manufacture of the Surface screen, Microsoft is using optical bonding, which makes text clearer, minimizes glare, and improves contrast. Bonding is expensive, so few tablets use it; Google’s 7-inch Nexus 7, Acer’s 10.1-inch Iconia Tab A700, and Barnes & Noble’s 7-inch Nook Tablet are the three notable exceptions. Based on my time with the 10.6-inch Surface prototype, the display benefits greatly from Microsoft’s investment in this pricier process.

The company has also reimagined how tablets could become better productivity tools, starting with its clever Type Cover and Touch Cover. whereas other manufacturers require a separate case with a keyboard or a dock that turns the tablet into a netbook-like clamshell (see the Asus Transformer Pad series of Android tablets—the Infinity TF700 is the most recent—or Fujitsu’s Windows 7 Stylistic Q702, due in this third quarter), Microsoft’s “smart” cover provides the well-integrated tablet keyboard you’ve dreamed of. Versatile, lightweight, and functional, the Type Cover has mechanical keys and a multitouch clickpad to delight touch typists everywhere. the Touch Cover comes in a number of bright, cheerful colors, as well as the more staid black, and has flat, pressure-sensitive keys that detect when you are typing. if you flip the cover around to the back, the built-in accelerometer turns off the keyboard (a nifty trick). the Touch Cover is thin, just 3mm, and snaps into place with a sturdy clink, thanks to magnetics and aligning components that keep it in place. because of this design, the cover feels more secure than Apple’s Smart Cover, which can easily slip out of place.

Keyboard: an innovative cover attaches to the tablet. the keyboard options, coupled with the polished design and Windows pedigree of the tablets, describe devices that could give both existing tablets and traditional clamshell ultraportable laptops a run for their money. however, “could” is the operative word here. until we know more-precise details about specs and pricing, predicting how well the two Surface models will compete in the marketplace is largely guesswork.

I do suspect that, initially at least, the Surface RT is unlikely to be an iPad killer. Microsoft didn’t reveal Surface’s price at the launch event. also, apps are paramount to tablet buyers, and consumers are unlikely to flock to Surface RT until Windows 8 gains compelling Metro apps.

Surface Pro, meanwhile, will challenge the current crop of laptops and Ultrabooks—and there it may well win. why purchase a classic clamshell-style laptop if you can get a tablet that quickly and elegantly converts into a laptop when you need one—all without sacrificing performance, interoperability, or functionality? the big question is whether consumers can manage with a 10.6-inch display as their laptop screen; for many, the convenience of a tablet/laptop hybrid may be worth the downside of viewing content on a smaller screen.

Tomorrow: A comparison of Surface RT vs. Pro and a look at what’s coming with Surface apps.

Apple v. Samsung patent trial over iPhone and iPad ...

SAN JOSE — over the past year, South Korea-based Samsung has hurtled past Apple and its iPhone to become the largest seller of smartphones in the world. And it also has become one of the companies nipping at Apple’s heels in the scorching competition for tablet sales.

But on Monday, a federal court jury here will begin to consider a multibillion-dollar question that will not only shape the supercharged rivalry between the two companies, but also may model the patent wars breaking out with unprecedented intensity in the tech industry.

For Silicon Valley, where innovation and imitation often collide, the question is simple: Did Samsung build on a wide range of new smartphone and tablet technology to offer consumers an affordable, popular alternative to the iPhone and iPad? or did Samsung cheat its way to the top?

The trial offers a rare window into how two colossal tech companies compete to feed the world’s insatiable appetite for smartphones and tablets, shocking observers who expect such cases to settle without either side risking a major loss or revealing the veiled inner workings of firms that devise and market the next big gadget. Indeed, Apple, in court papers unsealed last week, had to do something it never does: disclose the profit margins on its iPhones and iPads.

The trial also underscores the legal system’s limited ability to deal with complex patent feuds in a way that keeps pace with the development and release of new technology. Apple will be fighting to prove Samsung’s older versions of smartphones and tablets were copies, even as Samsung floods the market with its new Galaxy S III, a smartphone which Apple maintains has the same patent violations but will not even be mentioned to jurors.

The hostility between the two companies appears boundless, no doubt fueled in part by the view of late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who told his biographer before his death that he would go “thermonuclear” over Google’s Android operating system, which he considered a blatant copy of Apple technology. it runs most rivals’ smartphones and tablets, including Samsung’s.

Jobs’ ghost will certainly be in the courtroom — Apple lawyers plan to begin the trial with a 2007 video of the iconic executive unveiling the iPhone.

“I get the feeling this (lawsuit) is going on because Apple wants to prove a point,” said Brian Love, a Santa Clara University law professor.

San Jose U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel, now head of the Federal Judicial Center, added there is always a “subtext” to why major companies take their complex patent claims to trial.

“The litigation is often part of a much larger strategic competition,” Fogel said. “There is a lot more there than meets the eye.”

With mixed results, Apple has peppered the globe with lawsuits trying to prove Samsung “slavishly copied” its iPhone and iPad. even as the San Jose case unfolds, Apple and Samsung are squaring off in an Australian court, where a similar patent lawsuit will be in trial for the next few months.

But the U.S. market is ground zero in the smartphone wars, magnifying the San Jose showdown’s significance.

Apple revealed last week that it would seek $2.5 billion in damages from Samsung, which would be an unprecedented judgment if a jury agrees. “Samsung is on trial because it made a deliberate decision to copy Apple’s iPhone and iPad,” Apple wrote in court papers.

For Apple, the stakes are apparent. a favorable verdict would force Samsung to cut its competitor a sizeable check, and it would trigger a double-barrelled punishment:

  • Victory would likely lead to a permanent injunction blocking U.S. sales of at least some Samsung products, and

  • Apple would have ammunition to say its chief rival had copied its way to success.

nA verdict for Apple also might force Samsung to redesign its way around the patent problem in newer products, a costly prospect.

Samsung, however, denies that its Galaxy smartphones and tabs are replicas of Apple products. in fact, it has countersued, claiming Apple has violated Samsung’s patents and should pay royalties that could exceed $300 million.

In court papers, Samsung says it will show Apple’s iPhone technology piggybacked on the ideas of other companies, citing evidence Apple executives at one point sought to create a “Sony-like” phone. they also revealed that Apple developed an “Android war room” to study Android products for development.

“In this lawsuit,” Samsung argues, “Apple seeks to stifle legitimate competition and limit consumer choice to maintain its historically exorbitant profits.”

Apple plans to introduce evidence that Samsung was acutely aware its products were too similar to the iPhone and iPad. in court papers, the Cupertino company alleges that “famous designers” warned Samsung its phone “looked like it copied the iPhone too much,” and that Google likewise told Samsung its Galaxy tablets were “too similar” to the iPad.

Apple already has persuaded U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh, who will preside over the San Jose trial, that there is merit to Samsung’s patent arguments. Koh has blocked U.S. sales of the Galaxy 10.1 tablet, and put a similar injunction on hold for now against the Nexus phone.

William Stofega, an analyst with International Data Corporation, predicts the case will “attract a lot of scrutiny” because of how it could affect the market. And Stanford University law professor mark Lemley, a leading patent scholar, said the trial’s outcome may prompt the two sides to finally reach a global settlement in their international legal feud..

Experts, however, say it is hard to predict how a jury will sort through a glossary of arcane patent terms, a parade of experts and the competing claims to reach a verdict.

“There is a perception,” Fogel said, “that jurors decide these cases based on a sense of who’s right and who’s wrong. It’s more of a morality play than analyzing the technical issues.”

Kindle Fire 2 vs iPad Mini: One analyst said ...

If you believe analysts, here’s the latest from the world of finance and speculation. Amazon’s Kindle Fire will be destroyed by Apple and its rumored iPad Mini tablet computer.

According to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, Amazon is willing to spend in the tablet PC market because the “opportunity is massive,” however, Apple’s 7-inch tablet, reportedly arriving by the end of this year, will crush Amazon’s tablet dream. for starters, analysts and rumor-mongers claim that Apple will release the new iPad Mini by the end of October. It is worth noting that iPad Mini rumors started to appear online right after the launch of a popular 7-inch Android tablet, the Nexus 7.

Speaking of the Nexus 7, Munster’s interview with Bloomberg fails to mention the biggest tablet PC rival of Apple — the search engine giant, Google. Apparently, Google’s new Android Jelly Bean tablet is the hottest Android device in the United States right now thanks to its cheaper price tag, freebies and premium build quality, apart from its moderate marketing.

Retailers report that the Nexus 7 is sold out, especially the 16GB model. Google recently halted sales of the high-end model mainly due to underwhelming supply from Asus, the maker of the tablet, and the obvious overwhelming demand. Google and third-party retailers still offer the 8GB model. according to Google, its Play Store will expand to more markets apart from adding more content “in the next coming months” to generate more revenue, and to attract more customers.

Back to Amazon, the online retailer is expected to introduce a new tablet computer before the holiday season, the Kindle Fire 2, and latest rumors suggest that Amazon will introduce up to six models, reportedly with different screen sizes, capacities and price tags.

Apple sneakily debuts 32nm A5 in new iPad 2, Apple ...

With an illusory flourish that only Apple could pull off — “Focus your attention on this shiny iPad 3!” — the magicians of Cupertino have quietly started shipping iOS devices with 32nm A5 SoCs. So far, the new $399 iPad 2 (iPad 2,4 in Apple nomenclature) and third-generation Apple TV have been confirmed to use the new chip, but it’s also possible that there’s a new generation of the iPhone 4S with a 32nm A5 at the helm.

The original A5 SoC (system-on-a-chip), found in the first iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, was built on Samsung’s 45nm process. The A5X SoC in the iPad 3, which has four GPU cores instead of two, is also 45nm. by moving to Samsung’s 32nm High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) process, the new A5 processor (S5L8942, pictured above) is 40% smaller than its predecessor (pictured below), uses around 30% less power, and is significantly cheaper for Samsung to produce — thus, no doubt, allowing Apple to retain its fat profit margins on the cut-price iPad 2.

As far as we can tell, this is the first mass-produced part to roll off Samsung’s 32nm HKMG process. Samsung has announced four of its own 32nm parts — the Exynos 4212, 4412, 5250, and 5450, with the 4212 was slated to power the Galaxy Nexus — but so far, nothing has emerged (the Galaxy Nexus was powered by TI’s OMAP4). It’s possible that the 32nm process wasn’t ready in time for the Exynos 4212, or it might just be a case of Apple having a huge amount of clout — it must be one of Samsung’s largest customers, after all.

With the low-level stuff out of the way, what does the 32nm A5 actually mean for users? Well, for a start, the new iPad 2 probably has significantly more battery life than the original iPad 2 — either that, or Apple has also combined the new SoC with smaller, cheaper batteries (definitely a possibility, to reach that $399 price point). Performance will be the same. Incidentally, if you recently bought an iPad 2 and it came with iOS 5.1 installed, you have the new 32nm part; if it came with iOS 5.0.1, you’re all out of luck.

More importantly, though, the 32nm A5 is a very strong indicator that the iPhone 5 — which should be released this year — will also have a 32nm SoC. As for whether this will be a 32nm A5X, or something entirely new (a quad-core A6?), we don’t know. It’s also likely that the iPad 3 will undergo a 32nm revision, too, reducing its power consumption and thus the need for the huge (and heavy) batteries that currently encumber it.

The shift to 32nm will further cement Apple’s dominance in the smartphone and tablet arena. in terms of power consumption — the most important metric when it comes to mobile — only devices powered by the 28nm Snapdragon S4 have a hope of competing. The 45nm Tegra 3 is growing longer in the tooth every day.

Apple pays $60 million and still doesn’t get ...

I DO like this story. It appears that Apple has handed over $60 million in China to buy the Chinese rights to the “iPad” trademark and yet it still doesn’t actually own those rights.

    Ooops!

Apple may be waiting some time yet before it gets the rights to use the IPAD name in China after reports from the region suggested that lawyers of its court room opponent Proview are requesting temporary seizure of the trademark until they are paid.

A report on technology news portal Sina Tech (via Marbridge Daily) claimed that Grandall Law Firm has submitted an “asset protection application” to Shenzhen’s Yantian District People’s court.

The back story: Proview, a manufacturer of screens, had a product around the turn of the century which they called the IPAD. Pretty much a clone of a Compaq product. when Apple wanted to release their “iPad” they realised that Proview owned the name. so they set up a shell company (making sure that no one knew it was Apple) and bought it for $35,000.

All good so far. then, as we know, the iPad became massively, hugely, popular. and amazingly, the China subsidiary of Proview then revealed that while Apple had indeed bought the trademark for the rest of the world it hadn’t for China. Shenanigans maybe but Apple caved and paid the now bankrupt Proview $60 million for the China rights a couple of weeks back.

Apple can now launch the iPad in China (supplies until now have been coming in, sorta “smuggled” from the US and Hong Kong up to now)…..except that it can’t quite. for the law firm that acted for Proview hasn’t been paid. Proview is claiming that since they’re bust they don’t have to pay the lawyers. at which point the lawyers are claiming the trademark until they’re paid.

So, story so far: Apple’s paid $60 million and still can’t launch in China.

Well, they can, but they don’t as yet own that trademark…….

When the iPhone was first released, it was a game changer in the mobile device space. Now that google Android tablet PC based devices have hit the market, some people are starting to rethink their iPhones. there are a number of compelling reasons to give up your iPhone for google Android tablet PC.

Notification system. One reason to switch from iPhone to Android is the Android’s robust and unified notification system. Unlike the iPhone, Android has a single notification system that developers can tap into when developing applications. this means that the Android can provide notifications of various things like weather alerts, Facebook notifications, new tweets, and many more. the google Android tablet PC truly excels at keeping up with the flow of information all around you.

Easy connectivity settings. the Android devices also have an easy way to access the various connectivity settings. on the iPhone you have to dig into the settings menus to turn Wi-Fi ON or OFF or to change a phone network, GPS or Bluetooth configuration. Android makes it much simpler to control your connectivity. the power management widget allows you to easily toggle GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth ON and OFF right from your home screen. and turning off the phone network is as simple as holding the “end” key and selecting “airplane mode”.

Browser web. One of the most compelling reasons to choose Android is the web browsing experience. the Android browser is incredibly fast and very capable. Unlike Safari for the iPhone, it also supports Flash, allowing you to watch videos or play games directly on web pages.

Integration with Google. Obviously, an Android device will be tightly integrated with Google applications. It really goes further than that though. Android syncs its contacts with Gmail. this allows you to easily manage your contacts on either your phone or the desktop. In fact, a number of applications save their information to the Google cloud. and you are not required to use iTunes to sync your phone. this makes dumping the iPhone for Android especially attractive to those using Linux, and unable to run iTunes.

Multiple carriers. Being locked into a single carrier is the biggest reason that you might want to consider google Android tablet PC over iPhone. Android devices are available on a number of carrier networks so you truly have choice over who you want to use for your mobile service. with the iPhone, you are locked into AT&T for service.

Open-Source. Android is an open-source system. while that is less of a factor to some people, it is very important to others. Open-source means developers and hardware makers have much more control over how they can customize the Android devices. It also means that no one company has complete control over Android. many users are frustrated by the iPhone’s lack of support for Flash. on Android, even if it did not already support Flash, developers would be able to add support since it is an open-source system.

Last but most important factor looked by the users when they opt for buying an expensive thing is the cost of the product. Android smartphone are available at low costs and same is the case with android tablet PC and as compared to iPads. Both the machines have data plans for their functioning just like in the case of smartphones. But when it comes to comparing the cost of the device Android tabs win hands down.

Choose the features you are looking for when you are getting an application made for the tablets and as a word of advice look for the statistics of the devices before deciding to get your application made. look for the best google Android tablet PC app developer who can help you to take your business to the next level. if you enjoy this article about google Android tablet PC,you can buy them in the Android tablet PC stores or online. this article originate from the http://iblog.at/yuanyy89/, please indicate the source if retweet, thanks very much!
