ASUS Will Build Google Nexus Tablet to Rival ...

The ASUS MeMo 370T was a hot product at the CES show, which took place this January in Las Vegas. The smaller 7 inch tablet running Android 4.0 ICS was possibly overlooked, however, as many turned their heads to the ASUS Transformer Prime and the news of the PadFone dropping a few weeks after, at MWC 2012.

Around the same time, rumors started spilling over the Internet that Google was, in fact, looking to partner with a current Android manufacturer who would build a Google branded ‘Nexus’ tablet. Google has recognized that they have a similar ecosystem to what Amazon has, with consumer services such as Google Play, Google Music, YouTube, Google Apps and Google Books. They also have one more thing than Amazon… they own Android, which holds the highest percentage of mobile subscribers worldwide.

Google saw what Amazon did with the Kindle Fire, with their ecosystem deeply integrated and priced at a spot that people liked. In reply, they are releasing a Google Nexus tablet, and have chosen ASUS to build it, given their successful launch of Android tablets as of the last few months.

The main goal here is to launch a speedy 7 inch tablet while keeping the price down under $250. The Nook Tablet runs for $249, while the Amazon Kindle Fire is $199. Apple just recently dropped the price of their older inventory as well, with the iPad at $299 for a 16GB Wi-Fi, and the iPad 2 16GB Wi-Fi model for $349 (both refurbished models).

ASUS has gone on record, stating that they have a close relationship with Google, and as such will be one of the first to launch the next major Android version 5.0 “Jelly Bean”. Digitimes is going on record stating that the ASUS MeMo 370T will be the tablet rebranded as the Google Nexus tablet, and we’ll see it in May. Google launched a somewhat ‘branded’ Samsung 10inch Galaxy Tab at last years’ Google I/O event, which takes place again this June.

With these stories circulating, there’s no doubt that we’ll see ASUS making the ‘Google Nexus Tab’.

Acer wants Microsoft to rethink tablet entry: ...

Taiwanese computer maker Acer has urged Microsoft to reconsider its planned venture into the tablet market, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

Acer Chairman and Chief Executive J.T. Wang, said Microsoft’s plans to launch its own “Surface” tablet in October would be “negative for the worldwide ecosystem” in computing.

Microsoft’s Surface tablet would enter the market in direct competition with Acer’s “Iconia.”

“We have said think it over. Think twice. it will create a huge negative impact for the ecosystem and other brands may take a negative reaction. it is not something you are good at, so please think twice,” Wang is quoted as saying.

For the past two decades, Microsoft and personal computer makers have enjoyed a symbiotic relationship.

Campbell Kan, Acer’s president for personal computer global operations, said the company was debating internally how to respond to the Surface.

“If Microsoft is going to do hardware business, what should we do? should we still rely on Microsoft, or should we find other alternatives?” he is quoted as saying.

Apple iPad mini in October, new iPhone in ...

(Credit:CBS/Apple) (CBS News) has the Apple iPad mini been confirmed? A recent report by AllThingsD suggests that the Kindle fire and Barnes & Noble Nook will have some competition this fall.

Apple iPhone 5 screens to ship in August, ahead of rumored Sept. 12 event Apple iPhone 4S price drop suggests new iPhone imminent full coverage of Apple at Tech Talk

Citing “several sources,” AllThingsD reported that an iPad mini will be announced in October and not with the iPhone 5, which is expected to come out in September. Speculation that a 7.85-inch iPad would accompany the launch of the next iPhone has been circulating for months.

Previously, the Chinese blog NetEase reported that Apple has placed an order for an iPad mini. According to the report, 6 million units have been ordered for release in the third quarter.

In March, DigiTimes reported that “makers” in Apple’s supply chain have started “delivering samples of a 7.85-inch iPads for verification.” Weeks later, a report from the Korea Times cited an unnamed Samsung official that corroborated previous reports of a 7.85-inch tablet.

Earlier this month, the blog CultofMac reported that the smaller iPad will likely be just like the current 9.7-inch iPad, but scaled down to 7.85 inches.

While Apple dominates the full-sized tablet market, scores of competitors have cropped up with smaller, cheaper alternative tablet computers. Last fall, Amazon and Barnes & Noble announced 7-inch tablets – the Kindle fire and Nook Tablet, respectively. The tablets were priced between $199 and $249. in June, Google announced the Nexus 7 Tablet, which is also priced at $199.

It’s been speculated that if Apple releases a smaller iPad, it will likely be priced at anywhere from $249 to $299.

As far as the next iPhone is concerned, several sources are anticipating at a September 12 event with a sale date of September 21. Among hardware upgrades, some have suggested that the smartphone will have larger screen and smaller dock connector.

LENOVO, DELL SAMSUNG TABLET WINDOWS emerge RT ARM ...

With the announcement of surface, doubts remained whether Microsoft will continue or not to dismiss the manufacturers of tablets under Windows. especially with Windows RT version of Windows 8 for ARM architectures. Doubt that the editor of Redmond has raised.

In a note published on 13 August MSDN Blogs, Mike Angiulo, Vice President of Planning and Ecosystem team, announced that Dell, Lenovo ThinkPad sl400 battery (which has already announced its Windows 8 tablet), and Samsung produce tablets ( even PC) Windows RT. Microsoft Windows book intends to RT partners and will not offer the OS as a commercial product.

Windows Tablet PC or RT?

The first partner products listed should be born in October (called 26), together with the official launch of Windows 8. The Windows Tablet 600 Asus and HP g62 battery announced that RT should not only stay long on the market.

Digital slates running Windows RT will be powered by Nvidia chips, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments with which Microsoft has worked to optimize Windows RT ARM processor architecture, emphasizes Silicon.fr.

But do we speak shelves yet? Microsoft speaks, he an ambiguous "RT Windows PC." Mike Angiulo announced that "some of our Windows PC RT HP 530 battery come with full keyboard touchpad, whether movable / dockable (Dockable) or with a traditional valve."

More simply, there will be tablets with keyboard and touchpad device "clip-on" on the screen and traditional notebook (except for the ARM architecture instead of x86 chips from Intel and AMD).

Toshiba wants more

Microsoft does not say much for now except that evokes screen sizes between 10.1 and 11.6 inches for HP pavilion dv9000 battery autonomy displayed on paper 8 to 13 hours of use (including HD video) and 320-409 hours standby history to highlight the low power ARM processors.

If Microsoft is reassuring when the ecosystem revolving around Windows tablets RT, it should not count less with the defection of Toshiba pa3817u-1brs .

The Japanese manufacturer HP pavilion dv7 battery has announced that he would produce a Windows tablet RT, initially at least. Component shortages would not allow him to be ready for the launch of Windows 8, reports our colleague TechWeekEurope.co.uk.

Defection from HP and Acer

HP is also removed from the Windows tablet market following the announcement of the project area. HP g60 battery saw probably unfair competition.

Foresight significant when we learn that Microsoft would sell its size to less than $ 200, so at a loss. a loss that can afford to catch up on Microsoft cloud services but not manufacturers.

Concern shared by Acer as07b41. Its leader JT Wang spoke of last week a "huge impact negative" for Windows 8 ecosystem.

Microsoft nevertheless interest to gather as manufacturers around Windows RT, party incompatible with Windows 8, if he wants to attract developers and build an ecosystem large enough to ensure the adoption of Windows tablets RT by the public almost certain the Apple iPad to date.

Microsoft admits Surface competition risk with ...

Buried in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Microsoft warns that it faces “intense competition across all markets” which could lead to lower revenue or pressure on its operating margin.

But its Surface tablet could cause the company a long-term headache with its friends in the hardware building space — now its rivals in the tablet market.

On page 14 of Microsoft’s 10-K annual report as required by law, the software giant warned of potential trouble ahead particularly with the impending launch of its Surface tablet.

Talking about overall competition in the technology sector, Microsoft gave the usual flags to its business, such as the need to stay ahead of the competitor curve by distributing low-cost products “broadly and quickly.” it also noted innovation, something many tech companies in recent years failed to achieve (hint: Nokia, RIM; just to name two.)

But the meat of the sandwich comes with Surface.

There’s no secret that the company has disrupted the tablet space in a bid to take on the iPad in the enterprise space. but it’s making public progress by noting the concerns, as it rightly should.

The section on competition among platforms, ecosystems and devices, Microsoft prides itself on its “well-established ecosystem” of users, application developers, and partners that provide platforms that “accelerate growth.” Microsoft adds that the impending “launch the Windows 8 operating system, Surface devices, and associated cloud-based services” adds further pressure to its existing ecosystem.

Building up to the crux, Microsoft said its operating margins face pressure from rivals that control both the hardware and software of a product or service. Apple’s the most famous one with its iPhone and iPad devices, and Mac computers, but Microsoft too acts in a similar way with the Xbox and its cloud platforms.

We also offer vertically-integrated hardware and software products and services; however, our competitors have been in the market longer and in some cases have established significantly large user bases. Efforts to compete with the vertically integrated model will increase our cost of revenue and reduce our operating margins.

But Surface will cause the largest shake up in the Windows-based tablet market and could force OEMs to feel neglected and pushed out, resonating with Acers’ sentiment that Microsoft’s strategy to take on Apple with its surface will “fail.” Dell said pretty much the same thing, despite reiterating its ongoing commitment to Microsoft and it would bring out its own slate-like device.

Here’s the kicker line (emphasis mine):

We derive substantial revenue from licenses of Windows operating systems on personal computers. The proliferation of alternative devices and form factors, in particular mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers, creates challenges from competing software platforms. these devices compete on multiple bases including price and the perceived utility of the device and its platform. [...]

Even if many users view these devices as complementary to a personal computer, the prevalence of these devices may make it more difficult to attract applications developers to our platforms. In addition, our Surface devices will compete with products made by our OEM partners, which may affect their commitment to our platform.

Arguably, however, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said the company will “prime the pump” in kick-starting hardware partners and OEMs in bringing Windows 8 to as many platforms and device makers as possible, but in doing so has royally ruffled the feathers of its friends and extended family in the hardware space.

Despite its desire to succeed, Microsoft’s tablet epitaph could read that while its Surface tablet was to show off to hardware makers its design for a Windows 8-powered tablet, it was merely a goalpost for others to overtake. Either way, Microsoft gets off lightly. it succeeds with Surface and generates vast revenue, or its hardware partners win the tablet race and Microsoft says that its own ‘encouraging push’ was its plan all along.

Microsoft remains quiet on a lot of things, not least pricing, despite reporting to suggest otherwise. at least the software giant isn’t burying its head in the sand on the wider issues, though.

Lenovo releases ICS upgrade for Ideapad K1

PC and mobile equipment manufacturer, Lenovo has finally announced the roll out of the Android Ice Cream Sandwich for its IdeaPad K1 tablet.

Lenovo had launched the 10 inch tablet based on Google’s Android Honeycomb 3.0 operating system last year. But following the launch Lenovo has been very slow regarding the upgrades for the device. although it was expected that Lenovo will be announcing the upgrade sometime earlier this year, the company has been delayed in the release of the Android Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the IdeaPad K1.

The ICS upgrade has now been made available for the IdeaPad K1 through the Lenovo forums and is available for customers who only wish to upgrade their devices and is not mandatory for anyone.

“Lenovo is providing a basic non-customised, region-independent release of Android 4.03 aka Ice Cream Sandwich for customers who wish to install this OS on their IdeaPad K1 Tablet systems,” Lenovo wrote in a blog post.

This release differs from the factory-installed Honeycomb 3.1 release and subsequent OTA (Over the Air) updates to Honeycomb 3.2, and it does not include Lenovo customisations such as the launcher, pre-installed apps or an app store, nor the underlying framework.

IdeaPad K1 features a 1280 x 800 pixel display and is powered by 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor and 1 GB of RAM. the tablet features both front and rear cameras and along with WiFi-only connectivity.

This release is not recommended for the casual or mainstream user who is unfamiliar with the Android OS and customisation process. the source code, which may be of additional value to the developer community, will be made available shortly. Further to this OTA updates are not planned for release on the Lenovo K1 IdeaPad tablet. the upgrade file and information can be accessed by following this link (http://download.lenovo.com/lenovo/content/sm/K1_WIFI3G_%20K1_A301_21_03_120607_ICS_Image.zip) to the Lenovo forums.

RIM to Launch BlackBerry PlayBook 4G LTE with ...

It’s nearly two years now since RIM launched the first BlackBerry PlayBook and even though the Canadian BlackBerry maker announced at last year’s Mobile World Congress that a successor will be out anytime soon, the company didn’t actually release a new slate more than a year since then. Despite of that, a second iteration of the enterprise-friendly tablet still receives much anticipation, at least for some loyal BlackBerry fans in an excited state of getting their hands on BB PlayBook OS 2 which is believed to offer a glimpse of the BlackBerry OS 10 in early 2013. interestingly enough, the new BlackBerry PlayBook is expected to launch on July 31st, thanks to a leaked document that may or may not make RIM proud of. but hey, do RIM really still has to hold off from making announcements for that big day?

Anyhow, the screenshot above says enough how imminent the launch of the new PlayBook is. And if you’re a bit curious what RIM will bring unto the table, the new BlackBerry PlayBook will sport notable specs upgrade such as the 1.5GHz dual-core processor, support for 4G networks such as LTE and HSPA+ (so most likely, there are two models to launch) and of course the PlayBook OS 2.0. It would be the same 7-inch tablet, but a bit slimmer at 9.7mm compared to its predecessor. this time around though, only one storage option is available and that is, just 32GB. And the price? the report says it will retail for $550 which is $50 lower than the 32GB version of the first-gen PlayBook.

More on this once this gets official next week, so just stay tuned! [via]

RIM to Launch BlackBerry PlayBook 4G LTE with 1.5GHz 2-Core Processor, 32GB-Only, and OS 2.0

Aug 22

How PlayBook LTE Stacks Up to Its Competitors

One of the recent developments in the tablet sphere is the launch of the LTE version of the PlayBook. the 4G compatible RIM tablet came in almost unnoticed, perhaps because it arrived over a year since RIM had first announced it was in development. In the last year, quad core CPU’s and high resolution displays have become associated with tablet devices, and the late introduction of the LTE Playbook prevented it from keeping up with the times. In view of the recent launches that we have seen, as well as a few more upcoming devices, the PlayBook does seem to be from a bygone era. At least the tablet in itself is a step ahead of its 3G counterpart. however, depending on your tablet needs, it can be worth comparing the PlayBook 4G to many of the tablets currently available, including even the chart topper iPad 3.

First things first, the PlayBook 4G is almost the same device that RIM had launched in 2011, but has an upgraded CPU and the ability to connect to 4G and LTE networks. This makes the device a bit more up to date than the older WIFI model, though its makers may have goofed things up on the pricing again. the 32 GB version of the tablet is priced at $549 without any carrier contract, which makes one wonder if there will be many takers for it. also, is 4G capability along with a more powerful processor (1.5 Ghz Dual-core chip against 1 Ghz for theWIFI PlayBook) worth the quite hefty price tag? For comparison’s sake, the 4G iPad 3 with 32 GB storage will cost $729, though that is a vastly better device with the best display, better processing capability, and a comprehensive tablet app ecosystem.

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is cheaper at $470 in spite of featuring a bigger and better display while also owing allegiance to a better ecosystem. or if you would like to be in the vicinity of a 7 inch display, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE is also cheaper at $499.

Coming back to PlayBook and its 4G capability, the tablet does pack a punch here and delivers good download and upload speeds. Couple that to its improved processing capabilities and what you have is a tablet that boasts of speedy performance.

About its OS, the PlayBook 4G is exactly identical with its stable mates by running the PlayBook OS 2.0 that had brought some degree of respectability to the tablet. This has enabled the tablet to run some Android apps. while that does add to the tablet’s appeal, the PlayBook, or for that matter RIM, is still way behind its competitors as far as availability of apps is concerned. Android and iOS is far better on this, while Windows 8 is catching up fast.

Externally, the PlayBook 4G is the same as its other version except for a micro SIM card slot that is housed at the base where the ports are located. the PlayBook 4G also has 9 hours of battery backup times, which again puts it in the league of the iPad.

Overall, the PlayBook 4G isn’t the most advanced 4G tablet that your hard earned money can buy right now, though it still has its pluses. it boasts of a solid build quality, fluid multi-tasking, good performance, and acceptable battery life. however, the one thing that PlayBook lacks the most is the availability of quality apps, and as a result users don’t have a lot of options  with the function of the device.
