The HP Folio 13 isn’t the first ultrabook to launch in India, but it’s definitely among the best ones. Let’s take a closer look…

Design & Build Ultrabooks are still relatively new to the Indian market. While it may not be the sleekest, lightest, ultrabook of the bunch launched and available in India, the HP Folio 13 is definitely one that has a simple design aesthetic and a touch of understated elegance. it has a brushed metal screen lid made of aluminium coated with a soft champagne brown hue that looks classy from the outside. Prop it open to reveal the same colour and surface encasing the black keyboard deck. and, of course, the HP ultrabook is thinner, lighter than mainstream 13-inch laptops, making it easier to carry around.

The HP Folio 13 is very well built, its dual hinges provide great balance to the two halves of the ultrabook it binds together. Screen, keyboard, touchpad the HP Folio 13 has a 13.3-inch widescreen display with a 1366×768 pixel resolution. the display appears bright and offers adequate contrast in an indoor setting, offering up to 170-degree horizontal viewing angle with minimal distortion — this is very good as it lets you share the HP Folio 13 ultrabook’s screen with a larger audience around you. Vertical viewing angles are okay at best. the Folio 13’s screen is good for reading text and watching movies.

The HP Folio 13 ultrabook’s keyboard has a distinctive HP laptop’s trademark on it — the key design, layout and spacing are reminiscent of HP’s Pavilion laptops. the keyboard is good to type on, no complaints on the feedback, the overall experience is pretty good.

The touchpad, however, is a work-in-progress — not just for the HP Folio 13, but for all ultrabooks released in India. we aren’t big fans of the current touchpad design found on all ultrabooks, where the multi-touch pad and two mouse buttons are on a single, continuous surface. While the MacBook Air deploys a similar design on its touchpad, using it is much better than any touchpad found on the current ultrabooks in the market — that includes the one found on HP Folio 13. it takes time getting used to the touchpad surface, and with practice you can use it flawlessly — but the learning process involves more than a few hit-n-misses.

Microsoft SA: Windows re-imagined and great new ...

Microsoft South Africa says consumers can expect great new devices and a new connected world from them

South African consumers can expect “Windows Re-imagined” and great devices from Microsoft in 2012.  This is according to Melanie Botha, marketing and operations lead at Microsoft South Africa.

Botha says that it is a very exciting time with new hardware innovation afoot and the ability to mix and match solutions for clients based on their needs. “We’re all in. Nearly every one of our products has or is developing features and/or services that support the cloud,” says Botha.

“Another focal area for us will be devices, devices, devices, it’s going to be an interesting year for device innovation and I think we will see some very interesting form factors,” predicts Botha.

Botha predicts that we are going to see cloud starting to become a little more mainstream this year, enabling some interesting integration across devices and media. “Applications will be the order of the day, both on devices and in the cloud,” says Botha.

An interesting observation is that despite the rise of tablet PCs globally, there is still strong growth in the PC market in South Africa and other developing markets.

Microsoft is however not neglecting the tablet PC market. “We’ve already previewed Windows 8, which is a massive step to changing the way that Windows customers experience the power of technology.”

And 2012 is obviously the year of Windows Phone. “Windows Phone is set to change the smartphone landscape with the announcement of our partnership with Nokia and the introduction of the Lumia device,” says Botha.

Both highlight that the trends of ‘consumerisation of IT’ is one of the reasons why it is so important for Microsoft to stay ahead of both consumer lifestyles and emerging work patterns.

“The blurring of boundaries between desktop PCs, enterprise servers, web and online services and devices is creating a new way of doing business,” says Botha.

“We’re unshakeably optimistic about the future of technology, and we spend a vast amount of time and resources delivering future technologies, today.”

CES Preview: Ultrabooks to Dominate the PC ...

At last year’s Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, you couldn’t throw your schwag bag across the show floor without hitting a 3-D television or Android tablet. this year’s hottest gadget? It looks like it will be the ultrabook.

Super thin and remarkably light, ultrabooks are expected from all the major PC manufacturers. Tablets aren’t going away by any means, but you can expect CES 2012 to be dominated by this emerging notebook category that’s being heavily pushed by Intel.

Intel, in fact, coined and trademarked ultrabook as a marketing term, using it to differentiate high-performance, ultra-portable, Intel-based notebooks from more mainstream, bottom-feeding notebooks and tablets. Apple proved to the world that this product category has legs via the success of its MacBook Air, and now Intel (and its partners) want a piece of the action too.

Intel says that to qualify as an ultrabook, a notebook must meet stringent criteria: It must weigh no more than 3.1 lbs, be no more than 0.71 inches thick, and provide five-plus hours of battery life. Even more germane to the consumer experience, it must boast flash-based storage, and incorporate Intel’s Rapid start Technology for speedy boot times.

At CES 2012, you can expect to see 30 to 50 ultrabook models from Dell, HP, Toshiba, Acer, Asus and Lenovo, a few of which already have ultrabooks in their arsenals of shipping products. most of next year’s ultrabooks will be in the $1,000 to $1,200 price range, and that’s a problem, according to display Search analyst Richard Shim, who says these devices need to be priced around $699 to appeal to mainstream consumers.

“The challenge is that you’re trying to make a premium product mainstream,” Shim says. “It’s sort of an oxymoron, because as soon as it’s mainstream, it’s not premium anymore.”

Forrester analyst David Johnson says, “Apple has proven that people will pay a premium for style, but only time will tell if that magic can be applied to ultrabooks intended for Windows.”

Although ultrabooks are a response to consumer demand for more tablet-like computing experiences, they won’t be displacing the tablet at CES 2012. “I think ultrabooks and tablets will share dual billing,” Shim says of this year’s CES. “They offer kind of the same experience, so ultrabooks might be the headliner, but tablets are the next act.”

Forrester analyst David Johnson adds, “while the ultrabooks are thin, light and offer instant-on convenience, the tablet will still have a place in the computer bag for reading, reviewing documents, and informal discussions or presentations.”

As far as specs and features announced at next week’s CES, don’t expect any huge changes from the ultrabooks we’ve already seen. Your average ultrabook will have a 14-inch screen, Intel Core i5 processor, and between 128GB and 256GB of SSD storage.

“At this stage, it’s still hardware design and price competition. Who can get thinner, lighter,” Shim says. so, while we probably won’t see any one-pound ultrabooks this year, there are other ways an ultrabook might distinguish itself from the competition.

Manufacturers could use more “exotic case materials and innovative designs,” Johnson says. Samsung’s Series 9, for example, is made of Duralumin alloy, a material that is also used in aircraft manufacture. Battery life, display quality and screen resolution are other areas that ultrabook makers can capitalize on.

Johnson hopes to see a few models built to AMD’s “Ultrathin” standards, potentially based on the company’s new Brazos platform and Radeon HD 7000 graphics. Though, of course, lacking Intel silicon, these models won’t really be dictionary-definition ultrabooks.

“Ultimately, the real value will be when you complement that with software, and Windows 8 will help with that,” Shim says.

Windows 8 won’t be shipping until mid-2012 at the earliest. this means ultrabooks won’t really begin to shine until later this year and early next year — we’re just in the “build-up phase” right now, Shim says.

Johnson says Intel’s 22nm Ivy Bridge processors will drive a new crop of Ultrabooks towards the middle of 2012. we could also see “retina”-quality displays up to 2880×1800 resolution arriving toward the end of the year. Other updates to expect: higher-capacity Lithium-Polymer batteries and ever larger SSD capacities becoming available as new models are released.

What about desktops and high-performance notebooks in 2012?

“There will always be a segment of the audience looking for higher performance systems,” Shim says. “Just like with cars, there’s guys looking for muscle machines and hot rods.”

Black Friday is right around the corner which means that consumers are already clamoring to get their hands on this year’s Black Friday ads.  One of the most popular items this holiday season is sure to be the iPad 2 from Apple so this begs the question will Apple offer any Black Friday deals on the iPad 2 this year?  Traditionally Apple has not offered direct discounts on their products however Jon Vincent, who runs BlackFriday.info believes that this year might be different. 

According to an interview on TheStreet.com, Vincent stated that he believes Apple will offer between 5% and 10% off the iPad 2 for online shoppers only on Thanksgiving Day.  However, he goes on to clarify that if you are expecting the iPad 2 to be discounted at large retailers like Wal-Mart, Target, etc you will be greatly disappointed.

With its Ultrabooks, leading chipmaker, Intel, has brought enterprise features like cloud services, lighter devices with longer battery periods and remote data security on devices like laptops, smartphones and PCs to the consumer.

The company claims by next year, these would start having an impact in the traditional PC market.

According to Intel estimates, by next year, Ultrabooks would account for 40 per cent of laptop sales to consumers across the globe.

R Sivakumar, managing director (sales & marketing group), Intel, says, “Ultrabook systems unite the performance and capabilities of today’s laptops with tablet-like features. Ultrabook devices would deliver a highly responsive and secure experience in a thin, light and elegant design, at mainstream prices.”
