In Battle of Tablets, is Apple Always Destined to ...

Apple is the big boy on the block when it comes to gadgets and tablets, but Google, Amazon and Microsoft are trying to get in on the act – it looks as though Google may have the best shot at taking a bite out of AppleÂ’s market share.

Apple has become a dominant manufacturer and marketer of tech gadgets by virtue of focusing on a relatively limited number of products and making sure to keep their devices simple. “It just works” could be the mantra of those who use Apple products and who may have eschewed Microsoft or even Linux operating systems. But Google has always lurked in the background as a major challenger to Apple, and it was just a matter of time before the “other” technology giant stepped up and tried to compete directly with Apple.

This isnÂ’t the first time that Google has stepped into the void, of course. The Android operating system is a direct response to AppleÂ’s iPhone. Of course, with Macs and iPads and iPhones running on a derivation of Unix and Android running on a Linux derivation, this whole conversation really should be about how major market players are using and modifying open source technology to make a fortune. But for the average, unsophisticated computer and gadget user, the main features necessary are that the item turns on and off properly, takes pictures, allows texts and otherwise helps them engage in whatever non-productive activity they prefer. Any talk of operating systems and derivations of Unix/Linux are much too highbrow for that particular crowd.

But more interesting, perhaps even for those who actually use the gadgets to engage in all sorts of “anything but work” endeavors, is whether Google can actually rival Apple on what has become AppleÂ’s turf. AppleÂ’s iPad Mini is sure to send fanboys and fangirls (including that dudeÂ’s parents from the Samsung commercial) into a tizzy of must-have tremors. The Mini starts at just $329 and has a 7.9-inch screen. There are other configurations that offer more hard drive space that cost more, but the bottom line from the business perspective is that it may just be too much for Google to handle.

Google is set to offer up the Nexus tablet next Monday at a press event in New York. The new offering from Google will be powered by Android 4.2. The event comes on the same day (later in the day) as a Windows Phone 8 event in San Francisco. Noted a Google invitation to the NYC event, “The playground is open.” It remains to be seen if Google can take a chunk of AppleÂ’s market share, but with Apple zealots now numbering in the tens of millions in the U.S., it could be a tough market. Notes one analyst, “In a real way, tablet evolution is increasingly requiring users to decide which walled garden they want to be locked into. Apple continues to pursue a deeply proprietary approach which attempts to firmly control the content, apps and services users access.” Well, if one must decide, the only advice we can offer is…choose wisely.

Android Tablets In The Near Future

The new year has begun and mobile industry giants are already competing and giving it their best! Mobile smartphones are no longer the center of their struggles since mobile tablets are becoming increasingly popular. A few years back, owning a tablet seemed like a privileged since the cheapest one was indeed the iPad which started at $500! That’s a lot of money, especially in some parts of the world and with this horrible economy crisis that the world is going through. But Android has quickly turned things around. Just look around your local tech shop or an online web store and search for some tables and the prices are really good! Today, it is possible to get tablets bellow $200, although most quality ones still start at $199. This is of course the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD (among many others)! However, it is worth noticing that these cheaper tablets are also smaller as they are only 7 inches long diagonally, while their bigger relatives can be up to 10 inches long. Even so, a lot of people still prefer smaller tablets and there a lot of these on the market and the numbers just keep rising! This is because these smaller tablets are truly mobile devices, and not bulky entertainment systems that most people dont really even need. Devices such as the Kindle Fire HD are much more mobile and easy to move around and this is why they will always be popular among fans of mobile tech and gadgets. So what major predictions can we expect for 2013 when it comes to these Android tablets? How will their evolution continue and what it the main thing that we can realistically expect from them? Well, there are four major things we should focus on:

  • Size will not matter anymore
  • There will be a tablet for you no matter what you budget is
  • Apple will continue to lose market share
  • Laptop companies will be in danger

Now, the first two predictions seem very reasonable and we have already explained this. There are people out there who want bigger tablets, and at the same time some still prefer a 7-inch Google Nexus 7. Thus, there will be more and more tablets of many different sizes and they will constantly be adjusted to fit the budgets of the worlds population. And what is this about Apple you ask? Well, let us face it, their stocks have been dropping and their market share fell from 87% to less than 50% when it comes to tablet sales. Sure, Apple is still a leading power on the USA market, but Android is taking a very big bite on Americas most expensive apple as it seems. As far as laptops are concerned, they will certainly not be replaced by tablets in the next 20 years and it absurd to perhaps even dare to say that. However, people who are buying mobile devices for entertainment, web browsing and gaming will probably prefer to buy these new Android tablets which will certainly result in fewer sales for major laptop companies. In fact, we can safely expect that only Sony, Lenovo, Apple and ASUS will make any major profit in 2013 when it comes to selling their laptops.

Apple struggles to ban Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

FRUIT THEMED LITIGATOR Apple has hit a hurdle in its effort to ban the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the US.

A US appellate court had ordered US District Court Judge Lucy Koh to reconsider Apple’s request for a ban on sales of the 10.1in Galaxy Tab last month, after Apple’s bid to clear the tablet from store shelves initially was rejected.

However, Koh has said that her court “currently lacks jurisdiction to issue a preliminary injunction as requested by Apple because the Federal Circuit has not yet issued the mandate”. once this has been issued Apple will be able refile its request based on its claims that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 “slavishly copies” the Ipad.

“Each day that Samsung continues to sell its infringing Tab 10.1 causes additional harm to Apple through design dilution, lost sales, lost market share, and lost future sales of tag-along products,” Apple said in a court filing last month.

Last month, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit wrote, “The district court has not determined the extent to which Samsung would be harmed if the sales of Galaxy Tab 10.1 were [banned], and how the potential harm to Samsung resulting from entering an injunction compares to the potential harm to Apple should the district court deny interim relief.”

“Nor has the district court evaluated the public interest at stake with respect to the sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1.”

Neither Samsung or Apple were available for comment at the time of writing. µ

Apple iPad, Android tablet shipments to hit 222.1 ...

Market research firm IDC on Thursday released a new study new tablet shipment estimates. Due to higher than expected demand in the second half of 2012, IDC has increased its worldwide forecast for tablet shipments from 106.1 million units to 107.4 million. The shipments will be lead by Apple’s iPad, which is expected to account for 62.5%, up from 58.2% in 2011. meanwhile Android’s market share is expected to slip from 38.7% in 2011 to 36.5% in 2012. The firm also revised its 2013 forecast to 142.8 million units, an increase from 137.4 million, and worldwide shipments are now estimated to reach 222.1 million units by 2016. “Demand for media tablets remains robust, and we see an increasing interest in the category from the commercial side,” said Tom Mainelli, research director, Mobile Connected Devices at IDC. “We expect pending new products from major players, increasingly affordable mainstream devices, and a huge marketing blitz from Microsoft around Windows 8 to drive increased consumer interest in the category through the end of the year.” IDC’s press release follows below.

IDC Increases Media Tablet Forecast, Expects new Products and Price Points to Drive Strong Shipment Growth through 2016

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., June 14, 2012 – Expectations of strong demand for media tablets in the second half of 2012 has led International Data Corporation (IDC) to increase its forecast for the worldwide market to 107.4 million units for the year, up from its previous forecast of 106.1 million units. In the latest forecast update of the Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, IDC also revised upward its 2013 forecast number from 137.4 million units to 142.8 million units. And by 2016 worldwide shipments should reach 222.1 million units.

“Demand for media tablets remains robust, and we see an increasing interest in the category from the commercial side,” said Tom Mainelli, research director, Mobile Connected Devices at IDC. “We expect pending new products from major players, increasingly affordable mainstream devices, and a huge marketing blitz from Microsoft around Windows 8 to drive increased consumer interest in the category through the end of the year.”

In addition to increasing the unit totals for 2012, IDC also updated its forecast to shift a larger percentage of future units toward iOS and away from Android. IDC now expects iOS to grow its share of the market in 2012 to 62.5%, up from 58.2% in 2011. meanwhile Android’s share will slip from 38.7% in 2011 to 36.5% in 2012. IDC expects third-place Blackberry to slip from 1.7% to 1%.

“after a very strong launch of new products in March, Apple’s iPad shows few signs of slowing down,” Mainelli added. “The addition of the Retina Display and 4G capabilities to the third-generation products clearly enticed many current owners to upgrade. And Apple’s decision to keep two iPad 2s in the market at lower prices—moving the entry-level price down to $399—seems to be paying off as well. If Apple launches a sub-$300, 7-inch product into the market later this year as rumored, we expect the company’s grip on this market to become even stronger.”

Amazon to Copy Apple's Strategy with Kindle ...

There are speculations that the 7-inch Kindle Fire tablet will hit a new low price of just $149, or $50 less than what the device is currently selling at, when Amazon debuts a new Kindle fire 2 tablet with a 1280 X 800-pixel resolution HD display in a few months. the company will sell both tablets side by side, with last year’s model being discounted to offer consumers an easier way to buy into the Amazon ecosystem and the low price will make the Kindle fire an easier purchase for customers to make.

Rumors of a price drop is originating from DigiTimes

To expand its market share, the sources believe that Amazon has a high chance of adopting a similar product strategy to Apple, in addition to a new iPad product, Apple continues to sell its previous model at a cheaper price to expand market share into the lower-end segment.

If these rumors are true, this would mean two things. first, it follows Apple’s new iPad pricing strategy where last year’s iPad 2 is selling at a $100 discount compared to the current third-generation iPad. With the launch of the third-generation iPad, for the first time Apple is selling the current model alongside last year’s model, and the new more affordable entry-level pricing is speculated to help Apple compete with low-cost Android tablets.

Second, this would mean that Amazon is not giving up its position on the tablet price war. With Google rumored to be entering the tablet market with a Nexus 7 Tablet announcement at the end of the month at the I/O developer conference, Amazon’s $149 price point would help the company maintain its lead against Android rivals. Google’s tablet has been rumored to be priced between $149 to $249 when released.

Amazon’s new HD tablet would then be priced at the $199 price point that the original tablet debuted at.

With pricing at around $150, the Kindle fire is beginning to inch closer to the pricing for Amazon’s E-Ink e-readers.

Samsung Galaxy Tab ‘a harmful drug’, ...

A US court has once again denied Apple the chance to ban Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 before the case has fully played out.

The fruity firm tried to get a preliminary injunction against the Android-powered tablets, citing patent infringement allegations, but Judge Lucy Koh said her California district court “currently lacks the jurisdiction” to grant one.

Judge Koh had told Apple in December that it wasn’t getting a ban against Samsung, so the iPhone-maker went to the US Court of Appeals in Washington, which told the district judge to reconsider her decision.

Samsung then appealed against the appeals court’s ruling, parking the case in Washington for the time being.

“A district court is without jurisdiction to grant injunctive relief that would alter the status quo while an appeal is pending,” Koh said today.

Apple’s motion for the early ban asked the court to “promptly” give it what it wanted “to protect Apple from the continuing irreparable harm that this court found five months ago was likely to occur in the absence of such relief”.

“Each day that Samsung continues to sell its infringing Tab 10.1 causes additional harm to Apple through design dilution, lost sales, lost market share, and lost future sales of tag-along products. This court should enter a preliminary injunction forthwith to protect Apple from additional irreparable harm,” Apple demanded.

The iPad maker tried to overcome the issue of jurisdiction by citing a case in which a district court did grant a preliminary injunction because it was trying to protect the public from harmful misbranded drugs.

Judge Koh said that the argument was a bit of a reach.

“Here… there is no broad public interest such as protecting the public from harmful drugs that forms the basis of the status quo that must be preserved,” her ruling said.

“Moreover, the federal circuit did not reverse the preliminary injunction order and direct this court to issue an injunction, but instead vacated the order with respect to the D’889 Patent and remanded the case for further proceedings.”

She did, however, say that Apple was free to file again for the ban once things were tidied up at the appeals court and all was ruled in its favour, so that the injunction could get slapped on quickly. ®
