Review: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (GT-P3100)

IntroductionThe Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) releases more than eighteen months after Samsung had launched their first Galaxy tablet (GT-P1000). The very first Android tablet from Samsung was the 7-inch model. This tab was a great success and we want to know  if this Tab has everything in it self to match that succes.

Specifications

Design and Packaging

We will start with the packaging, the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) comes in minimalistic white box like we are used to from Samsung. On the front we see a picture of the device and its name . And on the back as always we see some specifications. When you open the box you will immediately see the tablet in front of you.Let’s  talk about its design, what is striking is that Samsung has chosen the design that they used for the Tab 10.1N. As you can see that the front isn’t made of a whole front glass plate. You will now see speakers  on both sides, and at the bottom of the front you will see the name  Samsung. at the top you see a front facing camera (unfortunately only VGA resolution) ,the known sensors and the speaker are also there. And on the sides we see the power/lock button and the volume rocker and places where you can store your sim card and SD card.. at the bottom we see the speakers and a connector to recharge your tablet or to connect to your computer. at the top and bottom we see a microphone. The top also features a 3.5mm audio jack and at the back we see only the camera and the Samsung brand.Generally the build qualityof the device  can be called quite good for this price it just feels really really solid.

DisplayThis Samsung tablet has evolved into a slightly cheaper model, as you can read later in this review. one of the aspects in which it stands, in addition to the previously mentioned size, is the display. Samsung is known for making excellent touch screens, what we have seen for example in the Galaxy Tab 7.7. The Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) has a good display, but we can not call it excellent. The pixel density is a standard 7-inch tablets one and the color, brightness and contrast is of that top quality we know from Samsung. we would definitely not call this screen rubbish, this Galaxy Tab 2 sticks and stands its man against the most budget tablets (usually under 200 euros). But we noticed that this screen, as with other Samsung tablets, is clearly visible from the sides. If you turn the tablet almost  on its side then the screen display is still clearly readable.

SoundFirst, the positive part of the audio test. The sound produced by the two speakers on the side of the short side of the tablet is excellent. The volume achieves a very high level, if you compare it to other 7-inch tablets. The quality is good, considering the small size of the two speakers. That is, in fact, the only positive component of the audio-rating. The positioning of the speakers is really really bad. in spite of the stereo sound it will be heard as a mono-audio due to the placement of the speakers.we should note that you often hold your hands on one or two speakers when you hold the tablet. As a result, the sound gets distorted (for 1speaker) or to a large extent removed (at 2 speakers covered). If you want to correct that by removing your hands away  to keep space between them, it creates a unwanted fuzz of sound.take the first advantage and disadvantage together and you understand that it is still annoying as the speaker vibrations can be felt on your hands as you place them near them. This is only the case on high volumes.

PerformanceThe performance we encountered were more than enough. it is noteworthy that, compared with a budget tablet, the performance was clearly better. we used it  all week and had no lockups, while running  a dozen of applications. However, we noticed that the dual-core processor fairly quickly got in trouble with multitasking. with some big applications at work and  with multiple browser tabs  open it felt a little bit slower. This problem is not insurmountable but a striking detail that should be listed and if you have many widgets on your homescreen, Touchwizz got significantly slower.

Battery lifeThe battery lifecan be calles quite good .we could use it  all day with a little bit surfing on the web, listen to music and watching movies. Let us say for this kind of Tab it is just excellent.

UsabilityIt runs Android 4.0.3 called Ice Cream Sandwich which is really a good follow up on HoneyComb. to control the current Android software without hardware keys is always a little bit getting used to but ultimately all the important features can be used efficiently with the on screen buttons. You can also use all the Google applications like Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube.in terms of software, the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) runs Android 4.03 Ice Cream Sandwich, covered with the Samsung TouchWiz interface. The TouchWiz interface makes Android 4.0 almost invisible and pushes Samsung’s own stamp on this device. thus the home screen gets filled with interesting widgets and you get a large amount of applications developed by Samsung or Samsung partners.Examples these are the Samsung Apps portal with Samsung’s own range of applications, a Gamers Hub for downloading all kinds of games, a Readers Hub for downloading e-books and the S Suggest application for finding interesting applications that also your friends have downloaded. Samsung also introduces so-called Small apps to the system tray at the bottom that can be called by pushing on the little arrow on the dock. These small applications can be used for running applications in a small window.

Pro’s and ConsThe price is one of the biggest plusses of this Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0). You already have a Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) buy for around 230 euros. So with this in mind and looking back at the original 7 inch Tab we can say that this is a worthy follow up.for this money Samsung has delivered a great device, it’s biggest enemies are the Nexus7 from Google and the Kindle fire from Amazon.

Pro’ sSolid feel and a nice designMicroSD slotLOW PRICE

ConsGreat screen, but not what we are used to from SamsungBAD  positioning of the speakersNo HDMI port, no direct USB port (cable for connection to computer).

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) is an above average 7-inch tablet PC with excellent performance, good software and a very attractive price. for around 230 euros it is  a well-functioning tablet PC from one of the best players on the Android tablet market. Are you looking for a cheap 7-inch tablet PC with some more features than a budget tablet for under 200 euros. Then this 7-inch Galaxy tablet is an excellent option!!

Apple iPad 2 compared to other tablets

iSuppli has carried out a in-depth analysis of the design of the iPad and iPad2 and compared Apple’s flagship products with the five main pretenders to their crown – the Motorola Xoom, the BlackBerry Playbook, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer and HP Touchpad. From a design perspective, the competitiors were unable to match Apple’s design for efficiency.

Apple’s superiority of design was attributed to their in-house designer team and a formidable optimisation of the iOS to suit their own hardware, most notably more efficient use of RAM. although the Blackberry Playbook and HP Touchpad employ the same strategy of an OS modified to suit their particular components, they were stil unable to rival the performance of the iPad. the other Android tablets simply port a generic Android OS onto their hardware, leaving them vulnerable to a one-size-fits-all system.

Because Apple designs every component in their iPad, the OS and processor have been built with mutual compatibility in mind, and thus accomplish performance equal to or better than that of their competitiors while using only half the RAM. In economic terms this saves Apple $14 per iPad in material costs, which helps them control tablet pricing by producing the best-performing device at their price level. This erodes competitiors’ profit margins as they attempt to coax customers from Apple.

For instance the ‘bill of materials’(BOM) cost of the original iPad was $268, while to stick to those raw component costs RIM and Samsung had to produce smaller 7-inch models, all the while making do with a ‘one-size-fits-all’ Android OS against Apple’s hardware-optimised iOS. the iPad2′s BOM is $310, in case anyone was wondering.

Only Asus and HP tablets employ the higher-quality IPS multitouch displays found on the iPad.

The custom-designed battery of the iPad enables the iPad to be ergonomically optimised to give a more comfortable feel, whereas non-Apple tablets usually have squarer, thicker, and heavier backplates which simply don’t feel as good, even though the custom iPad battery weighs an extra 100g. For the extra weight, however, the iPad 2 battery, at 6930mAh, has the largest capacity of any of the models examined in the report.

One crumb of consolation for Apple’s competitor’s was the considerably lower resolution of the iPad 2 camera compared to all the other tablets examined.

Overall Apple wins hands down with the iPad and iPad 2. Some of its competitors can match it in one or two departments, all of them seem to have superior image capture devices, but for sheer performance and irresistible design, Apple’s formidable combination of hard- and software is keeping them head and shoulders above the rest.

Compose Email is a Free App for BlackBerry ...

Compose Email is a simple app that allows for the quick composition of emails on the BlackBerry Playbook. the app launches very quickly, allows you to write your email in either portrait or landscape mode then sends them to the Messages app.

This app solves a few of the problems that the Playbook’s current messaging app has, namely it is slow to load making the composition of an email much quicker to execute. with Compose Email, messages can be composed in portrait mode, which is something the native messaging app is unable to do. the app is also styled to match the contacts app and the messaging app so it won’t look out of place on your tablet.

£130 Eken T10 Tablet Offers ICS 4.0, 10-inch ...

A cracking bargain, shame about the resolution

The Eken T10 is a rather weird beast; as a tablet, offers twice the amount of onboard memory as the iPad 2 (and the same as the new iPad) but chose to stick with an old ARM Cortex A8 based CPU (similar to the original iPad), the AllWinner A10 which comes with a Mali-400 GPU .

But it is cheap, very cheap. At £130, that’s less than a third of what you’d expect to pay for the new iPad and less than half the price of the Motorola XOOM.

The rest of the tablet’s features is fairly solid. You’ve got HDMI out, 8GB onboard storage with a microSD card slot, a 10-inch 1,024 x 600 pixels capacitive touchscreen display, USB and mini USB ports, a 1.3-megapixel camera, a 5000mAh battery, Wi-Fi, support for a wide array of file formats access to Android Market AKA Google Play and weighs only 665g.

Expect future versions to come with Cortex A9 (either single or dual core) and to boost a higher screen resolution, at least to match the iPad 2 (1,024 x 768 pixels). Check the video below to find out more about the build quality of the Eken T10.

UK PC Market Suffers Worst Decline in Five ...

In the fourth quarter of 2011, PC shipments in the UK totalled 2.9 million units, a decline of 19.6 percent when compared with the equivalent period in 2010.

This was UK’s fifth consecutive quarterly shipment decline, and also its worst, says a report by IT research and advisory firm Gartner.

Overall, PC shipments in Western Europe amounted to 16.3 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011, a 16 percent decline from last year. The PC markets of Italy, Greece, Portugal and Spain were hit particularly hard, with year-on-year PC demand shrinking by 30 percent or more.

Although total worldwide IT spending is predicted to rise 3.7 percent in 2012, this current slump is caused by a combination of grim economic conditions and competition from the new generation of computer platforms.

“Despite aggressive pricing and special holiday deals for PCs, consumers’ attention was caught by other devices, such as smartphones, media tablets and e-readers,” said Meike Escherich, principal analyst at Gartner. “even though we saw a drop in prices, consumer PC shipments could not match the levels of previous years.”

While professionals still value power and reliability of PCs, it seems that consumers are increasingly embracing touchscreens and mobile technology. according to the report, PC shipments in the professional segment declined 13.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011, but the consumer segment suffered a bigger decline, falling 18 percent. Austerity measures hitting the education sector were quoted as one of the reasons for weakness of the professional market.

Just several years ago, netbooks were hailed as the new stage in computer evolution and in the third quarter of 2009 they represented a third of the UK’s total mobile PC market. Two years on, and the ultraportables show more than 50 percent decline in shipments. It is possible that many vendors are now shifting away from these devices, effectively replacing them with tablets.

But there is another type of computer which offers a glimmer of hope for the PC manufacturers. “Vendors face a long, uphill struggle to regain the interest of consumers. the introduction of Ultrabooks in late 2011 is desperately needed,” said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner.

HP maintained the leading position for PC shipments in Western Europe, and even increased its lead over Acer with 22.2 percent market share in fourth quarter of 2011. Asus won several major deals in the retail channel, which raised its total and kept it in third spot, while Dell struggled with slow demand from large organisations and the public sector, keeping its market share at 10.5 percent. Lenovo’s growth, partly due to its acquisition of Medion in Germany, helped it secure the fifth position with 8.7 percent share.

In the UK, four out of five biggest PC manufacturers performed poorly. only Apple achieved growth, which consolidated its hold on the fourth position, behind HP, Dell and Toshiba.

As a result of the  floods in Thailand, the impact of the hard-disk drive shortage appeared to be minimal in the fourth quarter of 2011, with local vendors feeling most of the effects. “If general market conditions continue to deteriorate, we expect hard-disk drive shortages to be just one of many contributors to overall PC market contraction in 2012,” said Ms. Escherich.

Meanwhile, smartphone and tablet sales are going through the roof. During the fourth quarter of 2011, smartphone sales had surpassed those of PCs for the first time, and this trend is expected to grow, according to research firm Canalys.

Microsoft SA: Windows re-imagined and great new ...

Microsoft South Africa says consumers can expect great new devices and a new connected world from them

South African consumers can expect “Windows Re-imagined” and great devices from Microsoft in 2012.  This is according to Melanie Botha, marketing and operations lead at Microsoft South Africa.

Botha says that it is a very exciting time with new hardware innovation afoot and the ability to mix and match solutions for clients based on their needs. “We’re all in. Nearly every one of our products has or is developing features and/or services that support the cloud,” says Botha.

“Another focal area for us will be devices, devices, devices, it’s going to be an interesting year for device innovation and I think we will see some very interesting form factors,” predicts Botha.

Botha predicts that we are going to see cloud starting to become a little more mainstream this year, enabling some interesting integration across devices and media. “Applications will be the order of the day, both on devices and in the cloud,” says Botha.

An interesting observation is that despite the rise of tablet PCs globally, there is still strong growth in the PC market in South Africa and other developing markets.

Microsoft is however not neglecting the tablet PC market. “We’ve already previewed Windows 8, which is a massive step to changing the way that Windows customers experience the power of technology.”

And 2012 is obviously the year of Windows Phone. “Windows Phone is set to change the smartphone landscape with the announcement of our partnership with Nokia and the introduction of the Lumia device,” says Botha.

Both highlight that the trends of ‘consumerisation of IT’ is one of the reasons why it is so important for Microsoft to stay ahead of both consumer lifestyles and emerging work patterns.

“The blurring of boundaries between desktop PCs, enterprise servers, web and online services and devices is creating a new way of doing business,” says Botha.

“We’re unshakeably optimistic about the future of technology, and we spend a vast amount of time and resources delivering future technologies, today.”

Let’s Compare Mobile Media Stores

Over the weekend, I was catching up on reading and came across John Gruber’s analysis of the Amazon Kindle Fire. Gruber wrote a solid piece about the device’s capabilities, target audience, and pricing strategy that’s well worth the read. the majority of Gruber’s writing is about Apple and like many others, he sees the Fire not as an iPad competitor, but more as a tablet that leverages Google’s Android platform in a way that best benefits Amazon while also having the potential to outsell other Android tablets.

One section of Gruber’s article stood out for me, however, because it’s essentially false. It’s a sentiment that many hold, including our own readers: namely, that outside of Amazon, only Apple has a media ecosystem to offer mobile devices.

Here’s the section: “Attack from a position of strength. Build on your previous successes. That’s what Apple does. That’s what Amazon is doing here. the other guys—the Samsungs, HTCs, Motorolas, RIMs—can’t match Apple’s hardware design, don’t even try to match Apple in terms of original and differentiated software, and struggle to match Apple’s prices because they don’t have the economy of scale advantages Apple does. Those guys can’t match Amazon either, because they have no content to sell. Amazon can give away the razor because they’re already in the business of selling blades. the other guys don’t even have blades to sell.”

Had Gruber pointed only to Research in Motion and Motorola in this part of his piece, it would essentially be valid (although if Google is allowed to purchase Motorola, the company has a young but growing content play).

Samsung and HTC have Content

Apple and Amazon aren’t the only mobile ecosystems in town. Last October, Samsung launched its Media Hub for content sales. the service provides movie and TV media for rental or purchase. I pointed this service out when Samsung announced its Galaxy Player devices, which are iPod Touch competitors and need a media ecosystem for sales success. HTC, too, has launched media stores this year: HTC Watch made its debut with the HTC Sensation 4G handset in April, for example.

Also, my 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab, purchased in December of last year, has a Music Hub powered by 7digital. Although I’ve bought much music from Amazon’s MP3 Store over the past few years, I’m now using Rdio these days for my music needs, so I don’t know what the Music Hub offers. It does exist, however. Readers Hub is on my Tab too; it sells newspaper content through PressDisplay, e-books via Kobo, and magazines through Zinio. These are all partnerships and not direct Samsung stores, but I’d be surprised if Samsung doesn’t get some small revenue cut.

Since a music store or video store is only as good as its content, I decided to dig deeper to see how the platforms compare among Apple, Amazon, and Samsung. There are a number of ways to do it. To keep things simple, I used Apple as “the gold standard” or baseline.

Essentially, I used iTunes to build a few lists of the most popular movies, TV shows, and music albums. I then checked Amazon and Samsung to see if they could match Apple’s offerings. (HTC’s services are so new that it’s missing most of what the others offer.) I’m not skipping the data checks to give HTC a pass; the company surely has work to do if it wants to compete.

What I found is presented in this simple chart.

Samsung Trails in Some Sectors

As the baseline, Apple is—and should be—100 percent stocked across the board. Amazon does quite well, missing only one content item, compared to Apple. (For the curious, it’s Mac Miller’s album, Blue Slide Park.) Samsung suffers in several categories, particularly with ABC television shows in particular, having just two of iTunes’s top 10 titles.
