Dell announces XPS 10 tablet with ARM processor, ...

Dell is back in the tablet market after laying low for a few months, announcing the XPS 10 tablet, which has an ARM processor and Microsoft’s upcoming Windows RT OS.

Hottest tablets

The XPS 10 is intended for work and play, said Alison Gardner, director of product group brand and messaging at Dell. the company did not share further information about the tablet’s price, availability or hardware specifications, saying more details will come in the future.

The XPS 10 comes as Dell resets its tablet strategy after the company’s previous Android-based devices failed in the market. Dell stopped selling the Streak 5 tablet-phone hybrid device around the middle of last year, and pulled the Streak 7 tablet late last year. the company’s new tablet strategy revolves around Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 and RT operating systems. also, with the consumerization of IT in the enterprise, Dell is also more on higher-margin mobile devices that can be used at work and home.

Dell XPS

The XPS 10 was introduced at the IFA trade show going on in Berlin through Sept. 5.

The closest competitor to Dell’s XPS 10 will be Microsoft’s Surface tablets, which will ship at the launch of the new Windows OSes on Oct. 26. Microsoft is offering Windows RT for ARM-based devices and Windows 8 for Intel-based devices, and Surface models will have both OSes. a Windows RT tablet has also been announced by Asus and Acer is expected to announce a tablet at a later date. Lenovo has announced the ThinkPad Tablet 2, which has an Intel chip and Windows 8.

The XPS 10 has a dock with a keyboard and battery that could bring a “multiday” run-time on a single charge, Gardner said. Dell has tried to make the tablet attractive to businesses by adding enterprise features, and IT managers will be able to manage and secure the tablet remotely.

Analysts have said that Windows RT tablets will be attractive to some buyers and will likely be priced lower than Windows 8 tablets. Windows RT devices will not run existing Windows applications, so buyers will likely have few ties with legacy Windows PCs running on x86 chips.

Gardner acknowledged that the XPS 10 will be different from tablets based on Windows 8, which will run existing Windows applications.

Dell in the future will also announce a Latitude tablet, Gardner said. Dell targets Latitude products at enterprises, and it is likely the new tablet will have Windows 8 and an Intel chip. Dell currently offers the Latitude ST tablet with Windows 7 and a low-power Intel Atom chip.

Dell also announced the XPS Duo 12 hybrid device that can be a tablet and an ultrabook. the device has a “flip design” in which the 12-inch touchscreen can fold up to become a tablet. Design cues for the device were taken from Inspiron Duo netbook, which has a similar flip design, but the XPS Duo is much thinner, Gardner said.

People will see the XPS Duo 12 first as a fully functional laptop as it will come with the latest Intel processors and Windows 8, Gardner said. the company did not comment on pricing and availability for the device.

Toshiba bows out of Windows RT tablet race

While Microsoft is touting the list of manufacturing partners planning on selling Windows RT tablets — including Asus, Dell, Lenovo, and Samsung — one company has decided to scrap its plans to compete against Microsoft itself with new slates.

Toshiba released a statement, provided to our sister site CNET, that it was canceling its Windows RT models thanks to “delayed components that would make a timely launch impossible.” this is hardly surprising news, as Microsoft supposedly envied Apple’s ability to control the supply chain and may be hogging parts for its own forthcoming Surface RT tablets.

Then again, with other major PC companies still in the game — HP was an early exception — Toshiba may also be cutting its losses rather than compete against the flood of Windows RT tablets that are on the way. the competition may be even tougher, if Microsoft can price its Surface models as eye-poppingly aggressively as rumors have it.

Toshiba says it hasn’t abandoned Windows 8 tablets altogether, as the company still plans to build versions around Intel’s chipsets (as HP expects to as well). Pricing pressure may not be as intense as with the lower-end Windows RT tablets, which will have to compete the iPad as well as the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle fire. Higher-end Windows 8 slates may compete instead against Ultrabooks, and include hybrid laptop/tablet designs.

Archos unveils Gen10 XS Android tablets with ...

Image 1 of 7

Tablet specialist Archos has given an early look at its Gen10 XS range of Android devices, which are set to start arriving in the UK within weeks.

Like Microsoft’s Surface, the tablets have a removable magnetic cover with built-in keyboard and dock stand.

The first to launch will be the £299 101 XS, a 10.1-inch model that will hit shelves in mid-September, the company said on Wednesday. it will be followed by 9.7-inch and 8-inch devices before the end of 2012.

The 101 XS has a TI OMAP 4470 multicore processor clocked at 1.5GHz and 16GB of internal storage.

It will arrive running an unskinned version of the Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.1 OS. an update to Jelly Bean, the successor to ICS, is scheduled for November but could come earlier, an Archos spokesman told ZDNet.

“you can trust us on the update,” he said. “after all, all of our tablets have always gone through at least two versions of Android.”

The 101 XS has a display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 1280×800-pixel resolution. While it does not use Corning Gorilla glass, a company spokesman told ZDNet that it will happily stand up to knocks and bumps.

Previous generations of Archos tablets occasionally suffered from visible cross-hatching on the display, which the manufacturer said was down to the previous chassis. to fix this, the 101 XS uses an over-moulded stainless steel frame.

Windows RT still alive at Acer, spokeswoman says

Computerworld – Acer plans to produce Windows RT devices at some point, according to a company spokeswoman.

That statement comes after Acer’s CEO blasted Microsoft for building the Surface RT tablet. on Monday, Microsoft excluded Acer from its list of Windows RT device makers.

“Acer plans to incorporate Windows RT into our product roadmap, but we have not yet confirmed the timing of our product launches,” an Acer spokeswoman told Computerworld today.

In June, Acer President Jim Wong said the Taiwan-based manufacturer would release ARM-based devices running Windows RT in the first quarter of 2013. He didn’t specify it would be a tablet, calling it a “portable device.”

The latest statement from Acer comes after a Monday blog from Microsoft indicated that Asus, Dell, Lenovo and Samsung will produce ARM-based PC designs.

Neither Acer nor Toshiba was listed by Microsoft as producers of Windows RT devices, even though both had indicated intentions earlier to build Windows RT tablets.

Analysts posited that Microsoft’s blog might only refer to makers that will have Windows RT devices ready in time for an Oct. 26 release, along with Microsoft’s own Surface RT 10.6-in. tablet and the Windows 8 OS,.

After the blog appeared, Toshiba confirmed it won’t be delivering a Windows RT tablet — for now — because of delays in obtaining components.

Earlier this month, Acer CEO JT Wang ignited a controversy when he said Microsoft’s Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets will drive a wedge between Microsoft and its hardware partners. in an interview, he urged Microsoft to “please think twice” about building Surface.

Analysts have noted that hardware partners will have to pay Microsoft for a Windows RT license atop their costs to build such tablets, and won’t have the ability to recoup losses through apps sales and content as Microsoft would.

Microsoft is also rumored to be selling its Surface RT tablet for $199 to compete against the Galaxy Nexus 7 by Google and others. If true, that price will cause hardware partners further concerns, analysts said. Microsoft’s cost to build each Surface RT is probably as much as $600, several analysts said.

Viewsonic to unveil 22in Android ICS tablet at ...

Viewsonic is going to launch a tablet the size of a computer monitor at the grand Taiwanese event that is Computex (which starts on the 5th and ends on the 9th).

The 22in monster “smart business tablet monitor” is part of the company’s “Touch and Connect” series and will likely target businesses keen to allow consumers to interact with their displays.

It will apparently run Ice Cream Sandwich and a Windows 8 version will also be available. Expect it to be a multi touch capacitive display as well with a 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution (or maybe a 2,560 x 1,440 pixels one).

Still, it is not the biggest touchscreen display or computer on the market. Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer, has an 80in Windows 8-based tablet in its office and Microsoft has been selling the Surface projection table (which is kind of a tablet) for a few years already.

No details have emerged around the pricing, availability and exact hardware used by the tablet. It will be interesting to see whether it can be used as a standalone monitor as well.

Lenovo Not Worried About Microsoft’s Surface ...

Lenovo said on Thursday the company was not worried about Microsoft’s new Surface tablet, with its CEO stating the PC maker is confident it provides better hardware than its competitors including Microsoft.

“They (Microsoft) are strong in the software, but I don’t believe they can provide the best hardware in the world. Lenovo can,” said Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing during an earnings call.

“Although we don’t like Microsoft providing the hardware, but even though they are starting this hardware business, we think for us that just adds one more competitor,” he added.

Earlier this month, the CEO of rival PC maker Acer said the company was opposed to Microsoft selling its Surface tablet, which he said would be negative for the industry’s ecosystem.

In the past, Microsoft has relied on PC vendors to push out its Windows product through their notebook and desktop products. but for its upcoming Windows 8 release, the software giant has decided to sell its own “Surface” tablet device using the OS, which would compete with its partners products.

Reports have also emerged that a version of Microsoft’s Surface tablet will be priced at US$199. during Thursday’s earnings call, however, Lenovo’s CEO said, “Regarding of the Surface, to be frank, we are not that worried about that.”

“We are still confident in ourselves. we are providing much better hardware than our competitors including Microsoft,” he said.

Microsoft could not be reached immediately for comment. Windows 8 and the Surface tablet are scheduled to be released on Oct. 26.

Rumored US$199 price for Windows RT Surface ...

Rumored US$199 price for Windows RT Surface expected to squeeze PC vendors out of the market Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Thursday 16 August 2012]

As Microsoft is reportedly considering selling its Windows RT-based Surface tablet PC at US$199, sources from notebook players are concerned that if the rumor is true, notebook brand vendors will be out of the game unless Microsoft only sells the Surface in the US.

Currently, most brand vendors are turning their focuses to Windows 8 and Intel-based tablet PC models, targeting the enterprise market with a price level above US$699.

The sources pointed out that Microsoft is fully aware that its actions have greatly offended its notebook clients, and therefore is trying to achieve success and acquire at least 30% share in the tablet PC market. a price of US$199 is expected to allow the company to achieve its needed goal.

However, if the rumored price is true, Microsoft’s Windows RT partners such as Asustek Computer, Lenovo, Samsung Electronics and Dell may all halt their development, leaving Microsoft to play in the Windows RT market by itself, the sources noted.

The sources also pointed out that Google’s Nexus 7 is seriously hurting sales of all other 7-inch tablet PCs and is also affecting demand for 10-inch models, but since Nexus 7 has not yet expanded into other important markets such as China, notebook players are still able to have room to survive. if Surface only sells in the US, it would minimize the device’s impact on other vendors’ machines, allowing others to launch their Windows RT products.

Acer pleads Microsoft not to make Surface cheap

Acer chairman JT Wang has his fingers crossed that Microsoft won’t price its Surface tablet lower than his company’s own offerings, CNET reports.

But a Digitimes report says Microsoft is looking to create a price chasm between Surface and competing tablets. “Microsoft is currently looking for solutions such as creating a price gap to minimise the negative impact on other vendors’ product lineups,” the report says.

If Microsoft does price it at $199 (the same price as Google’s Nexus 7), it would have a big impact on sales of competing products. But anywhere around $499 to $599 would have “a lot smaller” impact, according to the report. Hence Acer is praying for the higher price.

Microsoft is still keeping its cards close to its chest regarding the price of the Surface. all it’s said on the matter is: “Suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC.” But that isn’t all that much help given the huge variety of ARM tablets out there.

Microsoft surprised all its partners by announcing Surface, its own Windows 8 tablet. Competing with your partners doesn’t seem great business sense to me, but I’ll assume Microsoft knows what it’s doing.

Acer seems particularly irked by Microsoft’s decision. it told Microsoft to think twice about the device just this week. the same JT Wang told the Financial Times: “We have said, ‘Think it over. Think twice.’ it will create a huge negative impact for the ecosystem and other brands may take a negative reaction.”

a couple of months ago, a senior VP from Acer also told Reuters that Microsoft will fail in its fight with Apple and the iPad.

trouble in paradise, then. is Acer right to be annoyed at Microsoft? And how much should the Surface cost? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook page.

Lenovo announces ThinkPad Tablet 2, its first ...

Lenovo has just revealed most of the details on the ThinkPad Tablet 2, a 9.8mm-thick Windows 8 Pro tablet first shown earlier this year in prototype form whose details we published recently. 3G and AT&T LTE models will be available along with an optional digitizer (for “precision” pen input), keyboard, and dock. It’ll be a full x86 device — Lenovo calls a “joint effort” with Intel and Microsoft — that clocks in at 1.3 pounds with a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 display. It’s billed to have 10-hour battery life, which would be impressive for a device only 9.8mm thick. The standard model is Wi-Fi-only, but there will also be carrier versions including one with AT&T’s LTE connectivity.

We got to spend some time with the device Lenovo called “the tablet the industry has been waiting for” at an event in new York City today. we came away relatively impressed, despite the fact that Lenovo doesn’t appear to be doing anything differently from other OEMs when it comes to Windows 8. When attached to the keyboard dock the device does legitimately feel like a laptop — the dock uses the same keyboard as many of Lenovo’s recent ultrabooks, which is a very good thing — but by itself the device is a light and sturdy tablet. The pen input works well, though Windows 8 is so gesture-reliant that occupying your whole hand with a pen can be tough. It’s a sturdy and well-made device that’s comfortable to hold in one hand, and as we navigated through Windows 8 and a handful of Lenovo’s own apps everything was fluid and fast.

Unlike many other blue-chip Windows OEMs, Lenovo has been doing very well recently — and the Tablet 2 will likely be expected to do heated battle with Microsoft’s own Surface in the waning months of the year. look for it to launch in October around the same time as Windows 8 (likely even the same day); pricing is yet to be announced.

David Pierce contributed to this report.
