Electronic Gift Items – Best Gift For All ...

Whenever festive season or any other special occasion shows up on my calendar, first thing which comes to my mind is what to gift. I know it seems bit materialistic but gifts are part of the occasion. People don’t say it but everyone expects it. And if the gift is right then it adds up to the happiness of the occasion. So to make sure it’s worth the money, it is always safe to pick something which probably no one will dislike. And for that reason I always pick electronic gift items.

There are many options available from which we can choose. And it covers all age group. Today I would like to talk about electronic items from Apple. If it is for someone who likes to fiddle with new technology which I am sure everyone does these days then my best electronic gift item would be Apple iPod touch. Steve Jobs who was a creative genius has made technology so attractive that everyone wants to make it part of their lives. There are number of things you can do with it. iPod touch plays music and videos, excels at games and apps, makes video calls, shoot HD video, and more. The iPod touch is a great iPod, a great pocket computer, and a great portable game player. It makes music listening a pleasurable experience with its new Genius Mixes feature. Finding a location and getting directions with google Maps makes it very useful when lost. I would call it an all in one electronic item which makes a happy gift.

Apple iPod classic is also a good electronic gift item. It’s musical genius makes it a good choice for someone who is a music lover. If you are listening to a song you really like and want to create a playlist with other tracks that go great with it, the new genius feature does it with few clicks. You can count on this feature to create a mix you wouldn’t have thought of yourself.

Another electronic gift item which is favorite of mine is Apple iPod nano, it’s looks very stunning and thus makes it very attractive as a gift item. It’s world’s most popular music player which lets you enjoy up to five hours of TV shows, movies, video podcasts and more. The iPod nano has a built-in video camera which makes it fun to shoot video spontaneously whenever and wherever you are.

The best electronic tablets for 2012

The best electronic tablets for 2012 have an interesting heritage. Tablets were manufactured as early as the 1980s, but almost nobody wanted one until the touchscreen iPad was released in 2010. The original iPad, technically little more than an oversized iPod touch, was an instant hit. Samsung and many other manufacturers raced to acquire a share of the market.

Along with the Kindle Fire and the Barnes and Noble Nook e-readers, these companies are fighting to be second to the iPad, which still dominates the market. These are some of the contenders for sales in 2012:

• iPad

The stylish Apple iPad was designed for audio visual content. Books, magazines, movies, music, and games all function beautifully on the iPad. It offers elegant design, easy operation, and useful and entertaining applications from the Apple app store. Music and movies come from iTunes, and books from the iBookstore.

Screen resolution on the current iPad2 is not sharp enough for prolonged reading. The virtual keyboard annoys some people as well, though a majority prefer it to old style. Apple is also very strict about the availability of certain items in the app store. To some users, store policies amount to censorship.

The current iPad2 is black or white, and measures nearly ten inches by slightly more than seven (241×186 mm). Its lithium ion battery is good for 10 hours of use, and its cameras are useful for video calls as well as casual photography and video recording. It costs just under $500 for an entry level device, but the price is predicted to decline when the new iPad is released.

According to ars technica, the iPad for 2012 is likely to appear in early spring. Rumors say its two cameras will be upgraded, the screen will provide much sharper resolution, and the body of the device will be slightly thicker to accommodate the upgrades.

• Kindle Fire

The Amazon Kindle Fire has a 7” touch display and runs on a variant of Google’s Android operating system. The device provides access to the Amazon app store and streams movies and videos, as well as providing e-books. E-mail and browsing are also provided. Amazon sells the device at near cost, intending to recoup its investment by selling content.

The Kindle Fire is designed for entertainment, the way Steve Jobs originally conceived the original iPad. The K-Fire is easy to use and a handy size. It connects through WiFi or USB, and has 80 GBs of internal storage. That is said to be enough for 80 apps, and 10

Product Review: Archos 101 Internet Tablet

It’s clear Kindle and Apple’s iPad are frontrunners in a new generation of hand held computer. Palm Pilots and Blackberries started a portable PC wave back in the 1990′s, but high price and limited capabilities when compared to desktops or even laptops kept them playthings of executives or gadget geeks. Now, with inexpensive devices like the Archos 101 Internet Tablet, everyone can afford a tablet PC, with the same power as a netbook or even a notebook.

Basic Design

Archos 101 runs Android – the same OS that powers many mobile phones. If you’ve never used Android, don’t worry, it’s an incredibly intuitive interface that you’ll master in a few short days. On a tablet PC like the Archos 101, it’s a matter of tapping, gesturing, pinching and using your fingers in a very natural way. Like the Apple iPhone or iPad, this sort of natural manipulation of data seems destined to be the standard by which all future computers run.

On a physical front, Archos 101 is a wonderfully light, sleek device, with a 10.1″ screen. By using an over molded PVD stainless steel structure, through a patented process, Archos created a strong, but lightweight tablet. My sister has an iPad, and though it’s certainly a well made device, it soon becomes annoying because of weight. With the Archos 101, there’s also a nifty kickstand on back. This stand swings out from the unit’s middle, allowing it to be viewed from nearly any comfortable angle. It saves you from the burden of holding it, and makes for highly enjoyable browsing or video watching.

Performance

Archos 101 runs an Arm Cortex A8 at 1GHZ, with a 3D Open GL Graphics Accelerator. This CPU power translates into smooth video playing, super fast app loading and a more than decent webcam. The cam isn’t HD, but the video it streams and captures is decent enough. It’s not a good low level light camera, but when used outside in strong sunlight, or inside with good lighting, videos look great.

Video codecs, the programs which enable video playback, let Archos play MPEG 4, WMV 9, and H.264-HD videos. With optional plug-ins – costing extra – the unit can play AVI, MOV, MKV, FLV, and many others.

Archos has a long and proud reputation as one of the first companies to make PMPs – Portable Media Players. Music is one of the unit’s strengths, and it plays MP3, WMA, WAV, Ogg Vorbis and Flac. There’s a cool music flow system. It lets you swipe and gesture through a music library. The built in speakers sound fine – if a bit tinny at times – and a headphone jack lets you listen to music like on an iPod or PMP. Battery life will give you about 10 hours of surfing time, 7 hours of video viewing, and about 36 hours of music. These times are approximate, however since I’ve had my unit, I’ve rarely had to charge it, and I watch lots of videos and surf for hours at a stretch.

One of the allures of Android is the Android Marketplace. Here you download thousands of applications like games or utilities. Because of a lack of certification, the Archos 101 can’t access this, however there’s a similar utility called Appslib.

Summary

Retailing for $299.99 for the 8gb model, and $349.99 for 16gb, Archos 101 Internet Tablet delivers a truly affordable tablet computer. Before its release, only iPad appeared a smart choice for consumers wanting real tablet PC performance. It’s well designed, and boasts features most, if not all tablet PC’s as of this writing lack. iPad may be slightly more powerful, certainly more widely marketed, but Archos 101′s ability to expand by USB ports and SDHC makes it a real computer – not just an Internet tablet. Archos 101′s name implies it’s merely an internet tablet – good for just online browsing. However, with an ability to use full size keyboards, external storage, mice and even HDMI output to external monitors or TV’s, it rivals all current tablet PC’s. Most attractive of all, if you shop around, you can buy an Archos 101 for half the price of an Apple iPad.

How Can I Read Music on My Tablet?

Rather than lugging around cases and folders full of sheet music you can view them as PDFs with a music viewing app. Some of these are now available for tablet computers, so whether you have an iPad, an Android or a high-end Windows tablet, there is a music reader app for you!

As more and more uses for tablet computers become apparent, more and more apps are released that assist in using these versatile devices in new and interesting ways.

For instance, you might want to use your tablet as a drawing pad, or make the most of its audio recording capabilities. Similarly, you may be enjoying some eBooks on your tablet, or simply spend all of your time playing games.

Another popular use for tablet computers is as a music reader capable of displaying sheet music. In the past, sheet music would be purchased from music shops and propped up on a stand, where the musician would turn the pages as they played. A slightly inelegant solution for those of us not quick enough with the page turns, this has been the way of things for several hundred years.

What is a Music Reader?

A music reader is an application that enables you to follow the tune that you are playing (on piano, violin, flute, etc.) on a computer or tablet. As a piece of software, there are various advantages that this approach offers over sheet music,, such as the fact that no stand or sheet music needs to be carried around (although this is always wise as a contingency. After all, tablets can crash or run out of battery, but paper is 100% reliable unless it’s blown away by a stiff wind).

Music reader apps can also offer the ability to scan sheet music into the program, allowing you to keep the original locked away where it is safe. This could prove particularly useful for anyone with a large collection of sheet music, or for any piece that is currently in development.

Additional features are often included in this type of software, such as annotation options, integrated recording options and even a metronome.

Currently one of the biggest names in music reader applications for computers and tablets is Music Reader, who provides apps for Windows, Mac OS X and iOS.

Music Readers for iPad

A couple of popular apps are available for iPad tablets that are ideal for reading sheet music. The first is the Music Reader app, which lets you view sheet music stored in PDF format, annotate the sheets, add and remove standard music notation, and interact with the digitized sheet music in other ways such as manual and automated page turning, zooming and even viewing the page on an external display. You can also take advantage of a tuner, metronome and sound recorder tools.

You can find out more about the Music Reader iPad app in the iTunes App Store or via their website at www.musicreader.net.

An alternative for iPad is iStand, a tool that allows you to display scores in JPG or PDF format. iStand also takes advantage of iTunes file sharing, allowing you to quickly download any sheets that you have forgotten to take with you, and offers annotation options, the adding of notation symbols and even file export options.

Find out more in the App Store or via the iStand home page at istand.maissmusic.de/iStand.

Android Tablet Music Readers

If your tablet of choice is an Android Honeycomb device, the options are somewhat limited at present, with only the MusicPad Sheet Music Viewer from FreeHandMusic.com available, although this doesn’t have as many features as the iPad options.

As you can see from the screenshot on the right, MusicPad Sheet Music Viewer appears to tick all of the right boxes, and with the option to download more free and premium sheet music from the www.freehandmusic.com website, you should find that this is an adequate solution for Android tablets.

Options for High End Tablet PCs

There is, of course, another type of tablet computer – the high-end Windows tablet, a sort of notebook with the display fitted the wrong way around and a stylus-based touchscreen interface. Often these are hybrid devices, notebooks with the display on a hinged pivot so that it can be easily folded back.

Finale Reader is available as an option for Windows, and allows the user to view, playback and print sheet music that has been downloaded from the Finale Showcase website.

In addition, Music Reader also offers a full Windows application that is just as suited for use on a high-end tablet as it is on a desktop computer. This offers much the same functionality as the iPad version, and is available as a 96 MB download.

Have we covered all of the options? Let us know if there is an app that you think should have been included in this list.

The top 10 apps to get you started on the Verizon ...

It is recommended to try the free version of apps that have four or more stars. Then, you can decide if you want to purchase the full version of the app. Many full versions simply remove the ads that are on the free apps, and the advertising can eat up bandwidth. Other full versions have more features.

General apps to have:  a good security, battery monitoring, application uninstaller, Geodelic and Yelp, usage or stats monitor, and music organizer will make for a good collection of tools and toys.

General warning about radio: Pandora or Slacker Radio offer excellent customizing and setup of your own music, but be warned that any radio or streaming service uses enormous bandwidth. Some ”unlimited” services really are not. A careful reading of the fine print must be done if lots of radio listening is in your future.  It is better to get a good music organizer and to download from your computer.

Top Ten:

COL Reminder: This has a variety of little reminders and alarms and is good for short term parking reminders and call reminders.

Voice Recorder: Works! It’s an excellent recorder

Calculator: a very good, basic calculator with large keys.

Geodelic or Yelp: It is good to have both. Geodelic finds out where you are, using the GPS, then tells you every business in the area, including where the public restrooms are! When you find a restaurant, for example, it gives all the info, the phone number for instant calling, and has reviews. These apps use the phone book data and Google maps and are also good for making an easy call to see if a business is open or still in operation.

Daily Paper: This is so cool! You choose your language and it will bring up every newspaper in the world that has an online version.

Photoshop and Photobucket: they have droid versions and are so effective for instantly uploading and downloading photos. Your wallpaper can be anything that is in your Photobucket account, via a very simple download process. The photo or item will spread across all three of your home screens, however, so a  good eye for eliminating clutter, along with some cropping or editing might be needed.

Tricorder: This is just the coolest and nerdiest little thing. It is a real, working tricorder with the “Star Trek” sounds and styles. It has a compass and geo locator, information about the sun, a decibel level monitor and some other goodies.

Rainy Days: This

Let The Tablet Wars Begin—Attack of the ...

It has been said, by many a blogger with greater authority than me, that 2011 is the Year of the Tablet. As the recent slew of Android-toting tablets on offer at recent expos such as MCW and CES, the battle for tablet dominance is heating up, and the ubiquitous iPad may lose its throne.

Having taken a big chunk out of Apple’s dominance of the smart phone market, the Android is now looking to do the same to the iPad. With Android Honeycomb, Google have built an operating system specifically aimed at the tablet market. They know that the likes of HTC and Samsung will build amazing tablets that run Android. The HTC Flyer and Motorola Xoom are both early offerings. It will be interesting to see, with the right pricing, how popular they are. From the initial pictures of the HTC Flyer, I am convinced it will win over tablet fans.

And yet, if we digress and go back a year or so ago, it was all about the netbook. Then, there was no "need" for a tablet. Indeed, tablets had been attempted by PC manufacturers before, but failed miserably.

I once read that when Sony introduced the Walkman, in the early ’80s, Sony did not research the market for what consumers wanted. At the time, the idea of listening to music privately while walking around was not something the man in the street had been demanding. But the fad for jogging and keep fit had become really popular, and the suddenly the ability to listen to music privately with a small device seemed ideal. You had a serendipitous meeting of technology and change in culture, and the rest is history.

So it is with the tablet. There was no consumer demand at the time for a tablet, after all, the netbook served as well as an-on-the-go computing device. But Apple created a desirable object that people wanted to own but do not necessarily "need". And now a market has been created.

So, the Tablet War has begun, and with Android Honeycomb being available to the manufacturers, suddenly we will all be toting a tablet in our bags. I for one am really excited by the Android tablets that go beyond the capabilities of the (current version of) the iPad. Once again, all eyes will be on the iPad 2. Manufacturers will look at what Apple will do, and then do something better.

Let battle commence

MusicPad Pro Plus

Music notation and the way it is distributed has not changed much over the last few centuries. Paper and ink have always been the traditional method of producing sheet music for use by musicians all over the world, but now modern technology presents a way to get rid of mountains of paper-based sheet music and store an entire library of titles in the space of a medium-sized book with a product known as the MusicPad Pro Plus from Freehand Systems. While the MusicPad looks like a tablet PC it has one purpose in life, to digitally store and display digitized sheet music for performing musicians.

What is the MusicPad Pro Plus?

The MusicPad Pro and MusicPad Pro Plus are about the size of a tablet PC, but are dedicated solely to storing, editing, and managing sheet music files. Sheet music is imported into the MusicPad through a normal desktop or laptop computer using a variety of file formats. Music can be scanned or imported directly from all of the major music notation software programs such as Sibelius and Finale. The bright, easy to read, touch sensitive LCD panel presents music one page at a time and music can be enlarged to meet the needs of the reader. Pages are turned by tapping the screen or through the use of a foot pedal.

Major Features of the MusicPad

An entire library of music for a performance season or class can be loaded onto the MusicPad at any time. Using a standard USB connector or flash memory the MusicPad Pro Plus can store over 128 MB of digital sheet music. The MusicPad can play music as a MIDI file to help musicians learn their parts, and using a stylus a musician can make color notations on the screen which can be saved and later printed out if desired. Premium versions of the MusicPad Pro Plus include wireless networking, built in metronome, a pitch pipe, and the ability to play MP3 files.

Who Is The MusicPad Pro Best For?

The MusicPad series of digital sheet music systems are great for any musician but are especially handy for performing ensembles. There is no need to transport and file large amounts of paper and no risk of losing the originals. Any MusicPad can be updated from the master computer quickly and easily allowing music directors to distribute parts and make instant changes to the music. The MusicPad Pro Plus is intended for individual musicians and performers. A step up model, the MusicPad Maestro is twice as wide and is intended for use with full-size conductor’s scores.

Are There Any Drawbacks To The MusicPad Pro?

Aside from a very hefty price tag the unit also takes a bit of getting used to. While the Maestro version is large enough to display 11×17 inch music, the Pro version can only do 8 1/2×11 inch music at full size. This means that users have to tap the screen to turn a page or use a special foot pedal that is sold separately. The MusicPad also does not attach to standard music stands, although the company does sell very sturdy stands that are built specifically for that purpose.

In an era where all manner of common everyday things are going digital it should come as no surprise that printed sheet music would eventually make the transition as well. Look for the MusicPad and other competing digital sheet music technologies to slowly make their way into music classrooms and performance venues worldwide.
