Apple’s iPad Mini to Debut Weeks After New ...

With Apple expected to drop the new 6th generation iPhone on or around September 12th, it’s apparently not too early to begin looking forward to the next Apple product release.

Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long for that “next release” to come.

All things D is reporting today that Apple will host an October event to unveil the long-awaited smaller iPad.

“only after the next-generation iPhone is out the door and on sale will Apple announce the smaller iPad it’s been working on,” John Paczkowski writes. “that device, which is expected to have a display of less than eight inches, will be un-crated at a second special event, which sources said is currently scheduled for October.”

Daring Fireball’s John Gruber says both the new iPhone and the iPad Mini are such “larger than life” products that each requires its own dedicated media event to unveil the hardware.

“I don’t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time,” Gruber says. “Why share the spotlight? why have another Apple product battling with the iPhone for the top spots in news coverage? … the more I think about it, the less sense it makes for the iPhone to even share the stage at the announcement with any other product. the iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention — and it’s in Apple’s interest to keep that attention undiluted.”

So… which Apple product are you most excited about? the new iPhone or the iPad Mini? Please weigh in with a thought or comment below.

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra-M5-581TG launched in UK

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra-M5-581TG (Model:73516G52Mass) is a laptop halfway between the ultra-portable 15-inch and “traditional”. It differs from others by its finesse but also by its autonomy. The Timeline Ultra M5 has indeed autonomy that can approach seven hours using basic or three hours when higher demand. Good point, the battery maintains its performance over approximately 1000 charge cycles.

Side configuration, the Timeline Ultra-M5-581TG 73516G52Mass features an Intel Core i7 next generation. This is a low energy model, but a little less swift performance perfectly suited to everyday use. Of course, it is possible to perform more demanding tasks like video editing, it will just be a little more patient with respect to an Intel Core i “classic”. Little more for fans of multitasking, this notebook is equipped with 6 GB of RAM.

The graphics has not been forgotten with the presence of a GeForce GT 640M LE (light version of the Geforce GT 640M). The latter may be suitable for casual players, ready to make some concessions on the graphics settings with the securities most resource intensive 3D. Note the presence of Optimus technology that automatically switches between the chipset and graphics card dedicated to better manage energy consumption and autonomy.

Storage is entrusted to a hybrid system with a side of a 20 GB SSD to improve responsiveness and the other, a 500 GB hard drive for storage.

The rest of the configuration is more common with such a glossy panel with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels (probably the main weakness of these Timeline Ultra M5). Bluetooth 4.0 is a chip of the game. Note also

Finally, some users will appreciate its simple design but also its backlit chiclet keyboard.

Now, Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra-M5-581TG is available to order in UK at Amazon.co.uk

Corning’s Flexible Willow Glass Will Usher ...

The dream of a flexible device is one step closer to reality thanks to Corning, the company behind Gorilla Glass. The introduction of Willow Glass offers manufacturers the ability to create thinner, cheaper, and more efficient mobile devices. The new glass can even be “wrapped” around a device, opening doors to a revolution in design.

Willow Glass’ strong and flexible nature allows a high-temperature, continuous “roll-to-roll” manufacturing process – think newspaper production – greatly reducing the cost of production, which means cheaper tablets.

No indication was given on when we’ll see this awesome new Willow Glass technology in our devices, however news about it should start showing up next year when the next-generation devices start being announced.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 vs iPad = no contest ...

The differences between the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and the iPad (1, 2, and 3 for that matter) are immense – though I’m sure the title of this post will evoke a litany of different interpretations from readers here today. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is the next-generation tablet from Samsung to come with their own suite of Samsung-tuned applications, while the iPad is the best selling tablet-like device of all time as well as one of the best selling devices of all time, bar none. Samsung didn’t create the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 to compete with the iPad, but the inevitable question that pops up in the mind of everyone considering a new tablet purchase does end up being that almost no matter what: do I want this, or do I want an iPad instead?

This new Galaxy Tab has a similar sized display, they’re both just about as bright as one another, and they’re both very light. Compare the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 to the iPad 1 and you’ll find very comparable screens indeed. Compare this Samsung tablet to the iPad 3 and you’ll never, ever be able to settle for the Galaxy Tab. The iPad 3 has 2048 x 1536 pixels across its 9.7-inch surface while the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has 1280 x 800 pixels across its 10.1-inch surface – that’s 264 pixels per inch for the iPad while the Galaxy Tab has 149 pixels per inch. no contest.

Compared to the iPad 2 though, you’ve got a much more comparable fight going on. The iPad 2 has 1024 x 768 pixels across its 9.7-inch display, this putting it at 132 pixels per inch, this actually smaller than the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. The camera on the Galaxy Tab is 3.2 on the back while the iPad 2′s camera is less than 1 megapixel (and certainly not impressive, at that.) Both devices have a dual-core processor inside, the Texas Instruments dual-core OMAP4 just about as tested and true (and relatively old) as the Apple A5 processor, both of them working swift as the average user could possibly ask for.

The real question then, since both devices cost essentially the same in the market right now, is what you want out of the tablets for apps. Apple’s iTunes app store is just about as well-tuned as an app store could possibly be at this date in time while the Google Play app store isn’t quite as refined in your ability to find winners each and every time for downloads, but its vast. Both stores are vast, both have winning apps when you know what you’re looking for, and both Apple and Android are up to speed with how well they interact with other devices, as well.

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has a built-in IR-blaster so you can change channels on your television right from the tablet with no additional hardware while the iPad has so many accessories on the market that your head might explode. Personally, I’d rather have an iPad than a Galaxy Tab, but not because one is better tuned than the other. I like the vastness of the accessories market for the iPad, the app store has the games and apps I want right away, and it still seems as though Apple’s support network is the better choice in the end.

Have a peek at our reviews and hands-on with the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, iPad 2, and the rest of the devices they’re most closely related to in the timeline we’ve for below – enjoy!

Amazon May Go With 10-inch Kindle Fire This Year

Amazon originally had plans to release an 8.9-inch Kindle fire this year, but the company reportedly chose to take the 10.1-inch route instead to combat Apple.

Here’s an interesting twist. A previous report indicated that Amazon planned to inject ads onto the Kindle Fire’s welcome screen. the company is reportedly shopping around the idea to ad agencies, although it’s presently unclear if Amazon intends to insert ads into the already-purchased Kindle fire tablets, or launch its ad network on new models.

Now there’s a rumor that could possibly be linked to the ad-supported report. “Industry sources” intercepted by DigiTimes claim that Amazon may suspend the launch of its next-generation 8.9-inch Kindle fire tablet, and launch a 10.1-inch version alongside the 7-inch model instead. this plan makes a lot more sense, as consumers seemingly flock to the Kindle fire 7-inch form factor or Apple’s iPad 9.7-inch form factor, leaving others in the middle to collect dust.

According to the unnamed sources, Amazon is trying to simplify its tablet lineup to focus its competition against the iPad. the 8.9-inch tablet was originally planned to take on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab (DigiTimes says Note), but Amazon’s own Kindle fire took dominance of the Android tablet sector, making Samsung’s tablet less of a threat.

The DigiTimes sources said Amazon will ship an entry-level Kindle fire, a rumor that brings us back to the ad-based model. this could mean that the ad-based tablet components are upgraded from the current model, but the device itself will lack features that will be available in the premium 2nd-generation 7-inch Kindle fire. the 10.1-inch version will probably share the premium feature, but just on a larger screen. Thus Amazon will offer three models just like Apple when the latter unleashes the 7-inch iPad Mini in the same timeframe.

Tablet orders from Amazon are expected to start gaining momentum at the end of the second quarter or in early third quarter, sources said. the next wave is expected to arrive in the same timeframe as the original Kindle fire, if not sooner.

Samsung plans dual-screen folding tablet

Samsung’s next generation of Galaxy Tab tablet could have not one screen but two. a new patent shows Samsung is considering a dual-screen folding tablet similar to the Sony Tablet P or Nintendo DS.

the dual-screen concept folds in the middle. the screens display either one picture, divided by the hinge in the middle, or show something different on each screen.

the tablet also replicates features of the Galaxy Note, which comes with a stylus for tapping and doodling. the patent reveals a controller pointer thingy that lives in the hinge between the two screens.

Samsung has become the world’s biggest manufacturer of smart phones — and one of the strongest contenders to the market-conquering iPad — by offering a range of phones and tablets in all shapes and sizes. but even Samsung’s magic touch may not be enough to make this design work.

the Sony Tablet P was a worthy attempt to do something different, but suffered from paltry battery life and storage. And of course, very few apps support the unusual twin-screen setup.

Samsung’s brainchild isn’t the first time a company has attempted to do something different with the shape of the tablet. the Sony Tablet P had the whole folding thing going on, while the Asus Eee Pad Slider also shifted shape.

the most successful shape-changer is the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, which doesn’t depart from the classic tablet design but slots into a keyboard dock, becoming a laptop.

of course, the fact that Samsung has patented the dual-screen idea doesn’t mean it will ever arrive on shop shelves, but it does show that Samsung is thinking beyond the traditional tablet design. but can that traditional design be bettered? Do we really want small devices that expand into bigger devices when required, or do we just want thin flat devices that slide easily into a bag or pocket? after all, the slider and clamshell phones have both all but died out, to be replaced almost entirely by thin flat phones with big bold touchscreens.

is a folding dual-screen Samsung tablet a bad idea, or should Samsung continue down the road of offering every shape and size of tablet imaginable? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.

Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, first Windows 8 tablet, costs ...

What could be the first Windows 8 tablet has a price tag. we hope you’re not standing on your head right now, because the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga will cost £1,200, the company has revealed.

the Yoga is an ultrabook laptop with a folding screen that bends over backwards to turn the whole thing into a tablet, like the Asus Eee PC T101MT. It’s powered by Windows 8, the next generation of Microsoft’s venerable operating system which will run both computers and tablets. the basic model costs £1,200, and a more powerful Core i7 model costs an even more kundalini-disturbing £1,500.

An ultrabook is a slimline laptop using the latest Intel chips, such as the Samsung Series 5 or Acer Aspire S3 — here’s our guide to the best ultrabooks so far.

when it coined the name, Intel promised ultrabooks would start from around £600, and the subtext was clear: these are svelte laptops for people who don’t want to drop £1,100 or so on a MacBook Air. the Samsung Series 5 costs around £850 and the Acer S3 around £600.

With that in mind, £1,200 seems like an awful lot for the Yoga, so it remains to be seen if that price tag remains unchanged when it actually hits shelves, on a date that’s yet to be confirmed. Update: Lenovo tells us to expect the Yoga “around October”.

We’d be a bit more forgiving of that price tag if the screen split off on its own to become a lightweight tablet so you were actually getting both tablet and laptop, a bit like the Asus Transformer Prime or the saucer section of the USS Enterprise. but it doesn’t, and at 17mm the Yoga is perfectly slim for a laptop but pretty hefty for a tablet.

Is £1,200 justified for the Lenovo Yoga? are ultrabooks and tablets a good fit? will Windows 8 transform the tablet market? Align your chakras and leave us a comment in the comments or on our Facebook page.

Toshiba reveals 13-inch Android tablet as part of ...

Up until now, tablets have for the most part been produced and made available commercially in two different sizes: either the smaller 7-inch or less like the Kindle fire or Galaxy Tab 2 or the larger 10-inch tablet like the iPad.

However, there now seems to be a new extra large size available from Toshiba. The company recently unveiled its new 13-inch Android tablet as part of its new Excite range alongside the Excite 10.1-inch and Excite 7.7-inch tablets. The line-up of Android 4.0 powered tablets is part of Toshiba’s strategy to provide consumers with next-generation features that compete head-to-head with Apple devices but are more affordable.

The Excite 13 tablet, undoubtedly the highlight of the range, unsurprisingly packs more weight than the standard tablets currently available on the mass market, weighing in at just under 1 kilograms although it is only o.4 inches thick.

It also features a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 chip with GeForce graphics and 1GB of RAM and as with the Thrive tablet that the Excite is replacing, has micro USB and micro HDMI ports, plus a full-size SD card slot. Its LED-backlit LCD screen has a resolution of 1,600 x 900 pixels and a widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio, and 10-finger touch support.

The question then, is why would anyone want a tablet that big? Surely its sheer size makes it cumbersome and defeats the purpose of a lightweight and mobile device that tablets aims to provide?  Well, Toshiba has offered up some of the following reasons:

Firstly, the size becomes advantageous when a group of people are gathering around one tablet to collectively view a video or look at photos. If you have kids that ordinarily fight over who is using the device or you’re considering buying more than one, the size of the tablet solves that problem by allowing users to share it.

The other reason may be if you’re looking for a tablet for a casual gaming platform. By laying the Excite tablet on a flat surface, it can be used as an electronic board game for people gathered around — similar to Microsoft Surface. Also, if propped up on a kickstand users can see media clearly from a short distance away.

If the Exite is something you’d like to get your hands on, here is what you need to know – the tablet will retail in the U.S. starting at a price of $650 for 32GB of storage and $750 for the 64GB version.

As far as the other tablets go The Excite 10 is priced at $449 for 16 gigabytes, $529 for 32 gigabytes, and $649 for 64 gigabytes. The Excite 7.7 will cost $499 for 16 gigabytes and $579 for 32 gigabytes.

At CES 2012 in January, Toshiba unveiled the Excite X10 that was dubbed the world’s thinnest tablet measuring just 0.3-inches in thickness.

New iPad costs more to make, but Apple eats the ...

IHS dissected the new iPad and found more cash hidden inside than previous iterations.

(Credit:IHS iSuppli Teardown Analysis Service)

Apple is taking a hit for newiPad customers. That’s because the company’s bill of materials to make the next generation slates has apparently gone up, but the retail price has not.

According to an initial tear-down analysis by IHS iSuppli, the cost of parts found in the new iPad with 32GB of storage and 4G capability is 9 percent higher than that of an iPad 2 with a 3G radio. The report says the midrange new iPad costs Apple $364 for the parts, plus another $11 or so to assemble, for a grand total of $375, or just over 50 percent of the retail price of $729.

Not surprisingly, anticipated new features like Apple’s retina display, 4G LTE, and a larger battery seem to be to blame for the increase in the bill of materials for the new iPad.

The lion’s share of the payout from Apple for new iPad parts appears to be going to Samsung, which IHS believes sells the retina displays for $87 a piece to Apple, much more than the $57 screens for the iPad 2.

Samsung also makes the applications processor in the new iPad and might also produce the battery cells. If this is the case, it would mean that half the bill of materials for each new iPad can be traced back to Samsung.

Here’s the detailed breakdown from IHS iSuppli:
