New vs Old?

Performance

It is hard to sum up performance because both the Ideapad and Thinkpad brands cover numerous products with various different performance goals. However, there are a few things of note which are exclusive to one brand or the other.

So far the Ideapad S series remains the only way to purchase a Lenovo netbook. Lenovo did recently release the Thinkpad X100e, which is of netbook size, but its price and performance is a little greater than most netbooks and its battery life isn’t much to talk about.

The Thinkpad W series remains a strong choice for those who are looking for an extremely powerful desktop replacement which will be used for demanding tasks like video editing and 3D rendering. The Thinkpad X series is also in something of a league of its own, with the exception of the X100e. Features

While many people besides businesses buy Thinkpads, their design remains one oriented toward professionals who need a sturdy notebook with superior functionality. As a result, the Thinkpad line has certain trademark features. All Thinkpads are known for their keyboards which provide excellent feedback and rarely suffer from the flex issues found with some other notebooks. Thinkpads are also known for the trackpoint, a small red dot in the middle of the keyboard which operates the mouse cursor. Thinkpads have a reputation for durability and features to that end. Style

While not everyone will admit it, looks are important when buying any item and particularly when buying a laptop. After all, you’ll be looking at this thing every single day for the next few years, so it would be best if it didn’t hurt your eyes.

The Thinkpad is full of simple matte black designs and has been forever. Even dinosaurs used the same black slabs on business trips. That isn’t to say that Thinkpad products are ugly, however. Their simple design is attractive to people who are turned off by the recent assault of neon-colored products with lid patterns and other such nonsense. The only exception is the recent Thinkpad Edge.

The Ideapad line, on the other hand, embraces said nonsense. The Ideapad products are colorful, shiny, and attractive. Both the U and Y series Ideapad notebooks come in various colors and some include other style enhancements like textured lids.

Verdict

In this brief comparision, my verdict is easy to make: the Ideapad is the Lenovo for the masses. If you want a laptop which will serve as your primary system but you’re not going to be using it in board meetings, an Ideapad is a good fit. If you’re a businessperson, or if you’re simply interested in a product which values high durability and build quality over everything else, the Thinkpad is more appealing.

Acer Iconia W510 Hands-On: Three Modes, One ...

Here at Computex Taipei, Acer made sure to let the world know it’s supporting Windows 8 in a big way, announcing two slates, the 10.1-inch W510 and the 11-6-inch W700.We had a chance to take a closer look at the W510 right after Acer’s announcement and, though we didn’t get to really play with the device, we were intrigued by a few things we noticed.

First, the W510 has a matte screen with really solid viewing angles. We really appreciate Acer’s decision to go with an anti-reflective display when the vast majority of tablets have glossy surfaces that reflect ambient light back at the user. Some vendors have told us that glossy screens are popular on notebooks and other devices because they make colors “pop” more in a retail environment and generate sales. However, the colors seemed to pop really well on the W510 and we’ll take better viewing angles over gloss any day. We do, however, wish the W510 had a full HD screen rather than a 1366 x 768 resolution display.

Another thing we noticed was how responsive the white keys on the keyboard dock felt. We didn’t get to sit down and touch type but when we hit individual keys with a single finger, they provided really strong tactile feedback. We didn’t get to try the device’s clickpad so we can’t vouch for its accuracy.  

Clearly, one of the W510′s strongest selling points is what Acer calls its “tri-mode” function, its ability to serve as a slate, as a notebook or as a presentation / internet appliance when attached to the keyboard and bent backwards. in a brief demo, an Acer rep showed us the Iconia W510 flipping around into all of these modes so it seems pretty easy to use it any orientation you want or detach it from the keyboard.  

When connected to the keyboard, the W510 is supposed to get 18 hours of endurance, but when acting as a slate, a rep told us ot expect 9 hours. These numbers are in the same ballpark as those we’ve gotten from the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime which runs Android on an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor but has the same detachable keyboard design. unlike the Transformer Prime, the W510 uses an Intel processor, runs Windows and comes standard with its keyboard rather than offering it only as an accessory.
