4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook may debut this month

Consumers still interested in Research in Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook may get a chance at the long-awaited 4G model.

The new modeltablet is expected to launch in Canada through Bell and possibly other Canadian carriers on July 31. Citing an internal document from Bell, blogging site MobileSyrup says the tablet will be priced at $549.95.

The specs revealed by the document point to a 7-inch 1,024×600-pixel display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage.

Running BlackBerry OS 2.0, the tablet will offer a 5-megapixel rear camera capable of 1080p videos and a 3-megapixel front camera. Support for 4G LTE and HSPA+ will be part of the package.

A 4G PlayBook tablet has long been in the works but has struggled to hit the market.

RIM first announced such a tablet at Mobile World Congress in 2011. Sprint initially planned to introduce a 4G PlayBook using its WiMax network, but the two companies later canceled that plan as RIM wanted to switch its focus to LTE.

CNET contacted RIM for comment and will update the story when we get more information.

If the report is true, one big question arises: Will consumers buy a new BlackBerry PlayBook, even one equipped with 4G LTE?

RIM faces a more crowded and competitive tablet market than it did last year, especially among the 7-inch variety. Amazon’sKindle Fire and Google’s Nexus 7 have both seen robust demand. and reports say Apple will unveil aniPad Mini later this year.

Of course, the fire and Nexus 7 are Wi-Fi-only devices, targeted more toward individual budget-conscious consumers. The iPad Mini is still a mystery in the making, so it’s unknown whether such a tablet would support 4G.

RIM has aimed the PlayBook more toward the enterprise crowd, but the tablet has failed to catch on with either businesses or consumers even after RIM cut the price last September. With such rivals as Apple, Amazon, and Google, RIM will be hard pressed to interest enough buyers in a new tablet at this point, 4G or not.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 and BlackBerry Device ...

I think it is imperative that RIM maintain their security advantage through the FIPS accreditation. Unfortunaly, I think we will see the competition also receiving FIPS 140-2 certification if they haven’t already. As for the U.S. Federal Gov’t, we are already seeing organizations switching to Apple devices. my office in particular has deployed a number of iPads and iPhones. in my Agency alone, we have hundreds. that beings said, we are still evaluating these devices, but so far they are certainly considered more desirable than a Blackberry. Unfortunately, we haven’t done a hardware ‘refresh’ since the Bold 9000. So, when people consider the option between what they have now and an iPhone or a iPad, they will jump for an Apple device.

I’ve asked RIM to come demo the Bold 9900 and Playbook capabilities against their competition. However, RIM has quietly let Apple walk right in and take their business. I also blame AT&T and Verizon who have made pricing plans that appear to give Apple a price advantage. So, the ‘bean counters’ now argue that for the price Apple is the choice.

RIM launches new 4G PlayBook

Allan Swann Published 02 August 2012

RIM has announced a new 4G PlayBook tablet, despite its predecessors failure.

The new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook looks identical to its predecessor, but now supports 4G LTE mobile networks. Whether this is the PlayBook 2 that CBR exclusively revealed was still under development late last year, is unclear.

"We’re excited to bring customers the first BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with support for 4G LTE networks," said David Smith, RIM’s Executive Vice President of Mobile Computing.

"the new 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook offers a broad range of premium features, including a stunning 7 inch display, front and rear facing HD video cameras, HDMI out and stereo speakers, and it also offers premium performance on high speed cellular networks, helping customers to be more productive than ever and to make the most of their time on the go."

It will feature an unchanged 1024×600 screen at 7-inches, and a slightly faster 1.5Ghz single core processor (the Playbook 1 had 1GHz). RAM is unchanged at 1GB. the PlayBook 2 will also come with 32GB only, no other storage sizes are available. the camera remains unchanged. it will run the flawed PlayBook OS 2.0.The first PlayBook was released effectively unfinished, and sold poorly. After a OS update that took the best part of a year, many of those issues remain unfixed – such as a proper BlackBerry Enterprise Server email client. the company took a $485m writedown on the unsold inventory.

It is safe to say that, rather than a completely new model, this is simply a PlayBook 1 with 4G capabilities and a new processor. Whether this is a separate project from the PlayBook 2, or simply a re-engineering of unsold PlayBook 1 stock is unclear.

Either way, its technological capabilities are hopelessly out of date. the recently released Google Nexus 7 has a Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor at 1.3GHz running at the HD-lite resolution of 1280×800. the Apple iPad 3 is running Apple’s proprietary A5X dual core processor, and has a screen resolution of 2048×1536 on a 10-inch screen. it sold 17 million units in the last quarter – the PlayBook sold little more than a million in its entire existence. it did manage to sell 260,000 in the last quarter after aggressive price cutting.

RIMs app store is also a disaster when compared to Google’s Play or Apple’s App Store. it also doesn’t have much access to music, movies, magazines or books – so its unclear how RIM expects to compete in these areas. it has announced a BlackBerry Video Store, which it hopes will compete. it will also run into the Windows 8 launch in October, which will come with Microsoft’s Surface Tablet. The new product will be launching in Canada first on August 9, and RIM claims will support LTE networks in major markets, including Europe, otherwise it will utilise 3.5G networks, such as HSPA+.the company’s new range of BlackBerry 10 smartphones has been repeatedly delayed, and CEO Thorsten Heins has said it will now launch in early 2013.

One of the designers of the BlackBerry 10 OS, which was developed from the PlayBook OS resigned this week. Whether the two announcements are related is unclear.

RIM Pulls Out 16GB BlackBerry PlayBook

What used to be unverified rumors turn out to be true. Research in Motion has indeed pulled the plug off its entry-level BlackBerry PlayBook 16GB model. RIM explained in its press statement that the decision was made because the 32GB and 64GB varieties offer a better value. the $199 16GB model has a much smaller profit margin compared to the other two variants.

The 32GB model costs $249, just $50 more than the 16GB, while the 64GB version is $50 more than the 32GB moral.

It is a shame, however, that it took forever before the PlayBook became a viable product since its release. with its newly-minted BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, as well as its multiple product updates, the tablet finally became a product worth noticing. Now, if only the PlayBook would offer BlackBerry Messenger.

RIM BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet Now Available For ...

A near 70pc discount off the original suggested retail price.

If you don’t mind buying a refurbished tablet, then you could consider the RIM BlackBerry PlayBook from Mobiles.co.uk, a subsidiary of Carphone Warehouse, which is on sale for a mere £129 at the time of writing. (ed : none left now unfortunately)

The device comes with a full one year warranty although it is likely to be shipped in a brown box with only a cable rather than the full set of accessories and guides.

Given the fact that its SRP is £169 and that it was originally on sale for £399, this is actually a pretty decent price and compares very well with some cheaper no-name Android tablets currently available on the market.

The tablet comes with a dual core TI OMAP4430 processor clocked at 1GHz, 1GB RAM, a five-megapixel rear camera, a two-megapixel front facing one, HD video capabilities, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB & HDMI ports, 16GB onboard storage, a 7inch 1,024 x 600 pixels display and runs on BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.

A new firmware update solves some of the issues that originally plagued the tablet at launch – like the lack of an email client – but it fails to tackle perhaps the most important issue of all, the lack of popular applications.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.01 update improves ...

RIM has released an update today for its BlackBerry PlayBook OS, bringing the platform up to version 2.01.358. Although it’s not nearly as big of an update as when the company released version 2.0, which finally brought the long promised native email, calendar, and contacts apps as well as Android app support, this new update does bring some welcome performance improvements and bug fixes.

The BlackBerry PlayBook OS version 2.0.1.358 is an over-the-air update and is available for download today. it improves support for Android apps, offers better browser performance, and optimizes Video Chat, PIM, and BlackBerry Bridge applications. There are several other improvements as well, but no major additional features.

You should be prompted to install the update automatically. if not, you can check for the software update in the Settings menu under “Software Updates” and then tapping “Check for Updates.” if you purchase a BlackBerry PlayBook on or after April 17, 2012, the tablet should automatically be updated to version 2.0.1 during the setup process.

RIM blocking sideloaded apps for PlayBook – ...

RIM is planning to disable support for sideloaded apps on its BlackBerry PlayBook with a forthcoming update. the company’s vice president of Developer Relations, Alec Saunders, made the announcement via Twitter, saying that the move was to avoid the rampant piracy of apps, or in his words, the “chaotic cesspool of the Android Market.”

Officially supported Android apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook were introduced with the PlayBook OS 2.0 update back in February, but the selection is still limited. Users wanting apps not yet available through the BlackBerry App World have been able to sideload the apps to their PlayBook through software on their computer.

Although the number of apps on BlackBerry App World doesn’t come close to the volume of apps on the Android Market, or now called Google Play, it apparently is more profitable, according to Saunders. He claims that developers are refusing to work with RIM until sideloading has been blocked to avoid piracy. the change is likely to arrive with the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 update.
