Toshiba Computex 2012 Hands-on Round-Up – ...

This week there are more than just a couple of titans bringing the heat to the Windows world, Toshiba being one that dares to bring odd form factors to the table here in the summer of 2012. what we’ve seen from Toshiba this week includes one brand new tablet, a lovely All-in-one PC, and three notebooks – though one of them we’re not quite what to call as its got a display that’s so oddly shaped that it can’t quite be called a notebook, but certainly isn’t a tablet as it does have a keyboard attached.

This first mystery device goes by the name Toshiba Satellite U840W and has a U840 relative as well, both of them considered Ultrabooks. You’ll find here a 14.4-inch display on the W version of this device with a strange 21:9 aspect ratio. the U840 without the W classification has a 14-inch display with a much more normal look to it. have a peek at the both of them in our hands-on experience.

Next get your eyes on the Toshiba R9 Series, several devices with a fabulous ultraportable chassis and 3rd Gen Intel Core processor right under the hood. Will Ivy Bridge be enough to keep you on board with a no-touchscreen experience?

The Toshiba AT300 tablet is more than likely going to be the top of the pile as far as Toshiba’s tablet offering in the Android world this summer, complete with an NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor to keep you humming through to winter. this device has an aluminum shell and is certainly one whole heck of a lot thinner than Toshiba’s first Android at just 8.95mm thin.

There’s a cool Toshiba Portege Z930 coming your way this summer with 1.12kg of weight on it and Ultrabook in the name. this device comes with Ivy Bridge and, like the rest of these devices, will be upgradable to Windows 8 if it’s not released with the software right out of the box.

Finally get a look at the Toshiba LX830 All-in-one PC, with its 23-inch Full HD LCD touchscreen up front and Ivy Bridge in the back. this device comes with a Freeview digital TV tuner and is quite smooth looking if I do say so myself.

Next head to our [Computex 2012 portal] to see everything we’ve thus far seen and stay tuned as the hardware continues!

Devour the Acer Iconia tablets, see the wild and crazy ASUS TAICHI dual-screen notebook – get your eyes on the whole lot!

First have a peek as ASUS presents their Transformer Books, made to bring you no less than Windows 8 on a display that’s detachable from the keyboard dock it sits in and on. these books will bring you all the great things we’ve seen in the Transformer series for Android, this time with Microsoft’s newest operating system.

Next see ASUS’ presentation of the TAICHI, a device which has not one, but two screens on it – one on top of the tablet, one on the inside next to the keyboard. have a peek first at the presentation, then see the hands-on right afterward:

The hands-on we’ve got is presented by ASUS and shows the most current build of Windows 8, just about as close to the actual consumer release as you’re going to get. this device has a larger display on the inside and a smaller display on the outside – both of them touchscreens.

ASUS Transformer all-in-one is here as well, one of two gigantic devices that sits on its own pedestal to show off touchscreen greatness from all angles.

Then get prepared for Acer’s show of power at Computex as well, with Windows 8 once again right up at the head of things in all aspects.

Then we’ve got two magical devices to show you in close-up hands-on experiences. first have a peek at the Acer Aspire 7600U, another all-in-one device made to encourage you to touch the future of Microsoft. Behold one of the larger iterations of Windows 8 we’ve seen at the convention thus far.

Finally take a peek at the Acer ICONIA W510, a tablet that comes with a keyboard dock and the ability to turn its face around so many degrees that you’ll swear its possessed. this is one of two tablets that were shown today by Acer, both of them with Windows 8 inside.

Asus Eee Slate B121 is tough but lacks stamina ...

    Photos  of

SINGAPORE: to be honest, I’ve never been a tablet person. Why use a tablet, where the on-screen keyboard takes up half the screen, when you can use a laptop instead?sure, others might argue that a tablet’s weight, compact size and ease of use would more than make up for its disadvantages, but I’ve yet to be convinced… even after spending some time with the Asus Eee Slate B121.of course, that’s not to say that it doesn’t make an effort to try and change my mind.the first thing you’ll notice is the 12.1 inch LED-backlit touch screen with Corning Gorilla Glass. the screen is not just clear, but it is pretty tough as well.the 1280×800 resolution displays HD videos with ease. Watching a YouTube movie trailer on 1080p also means you can catch every fine detail.Booting up the Intel Core i5-powered Eee Slate is a pretty speedy affair, with the tablet’s 64GB SSD giving it a clear edge over my trusty old laptop.the Windows 7 Professional tablet comes preloaded with several programs made for the touch screen. A quick peek at its program list reveals the Windows Touch Pack, which includes several touch screen-enabled games and programs such as Rebound, an air hockey-like game, and Surface Globe, seemingly Microsoft’s version of Google Earth.those who need to do presentations will find that the Eee Slate does come equipped with two USB 2.0 ports, a mini HDMI port and a SD card reader, thus giving it slightly more flexibility than say, an iPad.the Eee Slate’s greatest strength however, lies in its handwriting recognition. While the default on-screen keyboard is competent, the outstanding performance of its handwriting software outshines it. using the tablet’s Wacom digitizer pen, the tablet is able to recognise about 85 to 90 per cent of the words I wrote, even when written in the cursive style.the digitizer is also pretty decent when paired up with drawing software. While one might be able to draw decent sketches, the digitizer is still not as sensitive as some of Wacom’s more recent offerings, like the Bamboo or Intuos5.so while this tablet might be targeted at the enterprise user, design students and perhaps those who need to write copious amounts of notes in class can still consider getting the Eee Slate.Eee Slate users though, will have to live with several drawbacks. For all its “toughness”, the capacitive touch screen has difficulty detecting more than two fingers at the same time. An attempt at playing Microsoft Rebound with four fingers resulted in a rather chaotic and messy game as the tablet struggled to keep up with my movements.those expecting something as thin and light as Apple’s iPad will be disappointed, as the Eee Slate is 16.95mm thick and weighs in at a hefty (for a tablet) 1.16kg.While the weight might not be an issue for some, the tablet’s biggest disappointments lie in its battery life and price.Though Asus lists the battery life at around four-and-a-half hours, this is only possible if you lower the screen’s brightness down to the lowest level. at maximum brightness, you probably won’t see it last beyond two hours.the tablet is also rather pricey at S$1,699 – the same cost factor that can probably buy you a decent mid-range to high-end laptop. so the Asus Eee Slate might be for you only if you like to take notes, have money to spare and regularly make presentations. -CNA/ac

Samsung may have a 2GHz Galaxy Tab 11.6 for Mobile ...

Though new rumors are suggesting that we won’t see a Samsung Galaxy S II sucessor at next month’s Mobile World Congress, it’s pretty much guaranteed that Samsung will introduce something in Barcelona, Spain.

Yes, according to new rumors currently spreading across the Internet, Sammy instead will unveil a 2GHz dual-core Galaxy Tab instead.

Word of the device first surfaced in December when BGR reported on an alleged 11.6-inchtablet with a 2,560×1,600-pixel display resolution.

With a form factor said to be “barely larger” than its predecessor, the presumed Galaxy Tab 11.6 has a thinner bezel and a 16:10 aspect ratio. Taking a peek inside, the tablet should have a Samsung Exynos 5250 2GHz CPU, which is much more powerful than anything currently on the market.

Adding a bit of fuel to the fire, Android And Me reports that it was able to spend time with a prototype device earlier this month atCES in Las Vegas.

After taking a number of pictures of the tablet, however, Samsung asked the blog to delete the images. Although those actions aren’t exactly confirmation of the tablet,Android And Me said that the device had a display larger than 10 inches and was running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Finally, there’s also a report coming out of German site TabTech.de, which claims that Samsung will be announcing a Galaxy Tab 11.6 at Mobile World Congress.

What’s more, the site claims that the tablet will include support for the same S-Pen technology that comes with the Galaxy Note. the image you see at the top of this article is a mockup created by TabTech and shows a slightly larger form factor, but with a much bigger display.

With less than one month before Mobile World Congress gets started, we can hope to see new details to trickle out. Should these rumors prove to be true, a tablet like this is going to be hard to keep secret. And if Samsung’s history is any indication, then we’ll likely see multiple storage capacities announced, perhaps 16GB, 32GB, or even 64GB models.
