Amazon press event set for September 6, new ...

Amazon has sent out invitations for a mystery press conference on September 6 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. the company remained tight-lipped on the exact nature of the event, but if last year's is anything to go by, it's likely we will see several Kindle product refreshes ahead of the busy Christmas shopping period.

“I’d assume it’s some more Kindle fire models, including at least one with a 10-inch screen,” said Kerry Rice, an analyst at Needham & co. “They’ll be priced very competitively, at lower price points than most, if not all their competitors.”

News of the upcoming event follow a report last month suggesting we could see as many as four Kindle fire 2 variants revealed. they range from a 7-inch base model with a 1024 x 768 pixel display right through to an 8.9-inch version with a 1920×1200 pixel display. other variants include 4G connectivity, cameras and all of them are rumored to include a pixel density of 216 PPI.

the Kindle e-readers are likely to receive a refresh as well, with the next-generation devices expected to feature integrated reading lights, following in the footsteps of competitor Barnes and Noble’s Nook Simple Touch released back in April.

Amazon’s Kindle devices have proven very popular in the UK since their launch two years ago. Earlier this month the online retailer announced that Kindle ebook sales now outpace sales of printed physical books on their website. in contrast, the Seattle-based firm noted last year that it took them almost four years to achieve the same milestone in the US.

Acer Iconia Tab A700 has a WUXGA display and sells ...

It’s not quite a Retina display, but at 1920×1200 pixels the Acer Iconia Tab A700 comes pretty close to the pixel density of the new iPad. It’s also up for pre-order for about $50 less.

Under the hood of the A700 you’ll find a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 SoC and 1GB of RAM powering Acer’s ever-so-slightly-tweaked version of Ice Cream Sandwich. 32GB of internal storage comes standard, and that HD-friendly display gets paired with 5.1 channel Dolby Mobile 3 audio. There’s also an HDMI output so that you can easily watch on a bigger screen.

Need more room for your HD content? no worries. Acer’s also included a microSD expansion slot that can handle cards up to 64GB.

The A700 features a pair of cameras — 5MP on the back and 1MP on the front — as well as 802.11 b/g/n/ Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR support. a 9800mAh battery pack provides enough juice to watch around 10 hours of HD video. apart from coming very close to the iPad’s PPI, the A700 also nearly matches in thinness and weight, at just under 1.5 pounds and 10.9mm thick.

Acer includes a handful of apps to give you a productivity boost right out of the box. In addition to Polaris Office 3.5, you’ll also find geek favorite Evernote preinstalled. Acer Print is also on board, providing hassle-free printing to almost 90% of the printers on the market (according to Acer).

You can plunk down your $449.99 right now if you’d like to pre-order the Iconia Tab A700, and you can choose either silver or black.

The Apple iPad 3: Is it worth the upgrade?

Apple has finally released the new iPad (let’s just call it the iPad 3 to avoid confusion) in the Philippines today. This, after months of waiting since it was revealed back in March.

Of course, the big question remains – is it really worth the upgrade? To better help you answer that question, we bought the new iPad way ahead of the local release so we can take it to its paces and figure out if the updates introduced by Apple are that compelling.

Look Ma, no pixels!

Yes, we admit the screen resolution on the iPad 3 is without a match. Compared to the iPad2, it’s twice the width and twice the height in pixels. that gives it a pixel density 4 times that of the previous iPad. At 264ppi (pixels per inch), it even rivals some of the top smartphones in terms of pixel density.

And why is that significant? Well, higher resolution on the same screen size means images are rendered better, photos and videos are more crisp and defined. the benefit also extends to apps as well as games on the iPad. Best thing about it is that you can now watch full 1080p movies in their full glory.

The same clarity and brilliance of the display that you get from the iPhone 4S is now also featured on the iPad 3. the experience is like using a macro lens on a dSLR for the first time and re-discovering photography all over again.

Don’t under-estimate the camera

While recording full HD 1080p videos and shooting hi-res photos using the rear camera of a tablet is nothing new, Apple has taken its reputation to task by using the same optics it used on the iPhone 4/4S and slapped it on to the iPad 3.

The result is a really good and powerful snapper that takes impressive stills and videos. so for, the iPad 3 has the best built-in camera on any tablet we’ve ever used (and believe us, we’ve tried and tested almost all of them).

Of course, it might seem odd or awkward to actually use the camera on the iPad 3 with its bulky size but we’ve seen it time and again – people are getting used to using their tablet’s camera the same way they use their camera phones.

New powerful engine under the hood

Apple has engineered a better processor to power the iPad 3 called the A5x. It’s a dual-core chip with a quad-core graphics engine. the graphics got most of the bump because it needed that extra horsepower to run games on the higher resolution screen.

As such, you will notice the snappy response of the tablet when running HD games and videos as well as apps that require some heavy graphics.

In the end, all you see or notice is smooth playback and an over-all performance that’s fluid and very responsive.

Super-fast 4G Internet

The iPad 3 now has options for 4G or LTE connectivity and you can probably reach speeds of up to 70Mbps IF (and that’s a big IF) your network supports it.

We’re not yet at that stage in the Philippines so the next best thing for cellular connectivity is HSPA+ with theoretical speeds of up to 42Mbps. Again, don’t expect those kind of speeds when you’re hooked up to the local carrier.

It’s not all fun though

While we’ve seen a number of improvements from the old iPad, the new iPad 3 brought with it a few heavy luggages.

First, the dimension of the tablet has slightly increased – it’s now a bit thicker than the iPad 2. This was done to accommodate bigger space for the Li-Ion battery inside. Not that the increase in battery size resulted in a longer battery life. it was actually done to make sure that the battery life remained the same and not go lower than the rating of the iPad 2. that goes without saying the tablet has also gained some weight.

Because the battery size is now bigger, it takes much longer now to actually recharge the tablet. Expect somewhere between 4 to 5 hours to get it from zero to 100% full charged.

And did we mention LTE is not yet commercially available?

Pricing

The iPad 3 is now available in local resellers, the Apple Online Store and Globe Telecom.

Here’s the suggested retail price for each variant:

iPad 16GB WiFi – Php23,990iPad 32GB WiFi – Php28,990iPad 64GB WiFi – Php33,990iPad 16GB 4G+WiFi – Php29,990iPad 32GB 4G+WiFi – Php34,990iPad 64GB 4G+WiFi – Php39,990

Compared to last year’s pricing, the 4G models of the iPad 3 actually got a Php1,000 price drop.

So, is it a buy or no buy?

If this is the first time you’re getting an iPad, you’ll definitely love the iPad 3. It’s fast, it’s resolutionary, you get thousands and thousands of free apps and it’s fairly affordable.

If you are using the 1st-gen iPad, upgrading to the iPad 3 is no contest — huge improvements between there.

If you’re using the iPad 2 now, we recommend you think twice between making the move. the iPad 2 is still pretty good and it can do almost anything the new iPad 3 can offer, spare a few.

Archos Arnova 9 G2 budget-friendly tablet revealed

Honeycomb may be all the rage with Archos’ top of the line tablets, but they never miss an opportunity to make good with the low end as well. Behold the Arnova 9 G2, a Gingerbread 9.7-inch affair with tablet-friendly modifications to Android. Even so, the tablet packs in some respectable hardware with a 1Ghz ARM processor and 8 gigabytes of built-in storage.

In a strange move, the Arnova 9 G2 has a 4:3, 1024 x 768 LCD screen, just like the one found on the iPad and HP Touchpad. That’s a departure from the majority of Android phones and tablets, which use a 16:9 or 16:10 ratio. Because of the lower pixel density for a panel of that size and resolution, it’s probably a lot cheaper to manufacture than the ones we’re more used to seeing. Naturally WiFi is the only wireless option, though Archos continues its tradition of expandability with a microSD card slot, micro and full-size USB ports.as with most Gingerbread tablets, Google services and Android Market access are nowhere to be seen.

Gingerbread may be a buzzkill now that Ice Cream Sandwich is well and truly here, but Archos has a vibrant community of modders, so you can expect to see an ICS ROM show up once the Arnova is released. On that note, there’s no pricing or availability info just yet, but expect it to be considerably less than the already cheap G9 Honeycomb tablets. We’ll be keeping an eye out for other sizes in the Arnova G2 series.

Report: Apple Struggles With Retina Display for ...

Apple released the iPad 2 last March without upgrading its display, and but a CNet report has said Apple is now facing challenges with bumping the screen of the iPad 3 up to retina display.

Apple would like its third-generation tablet to have a retina display, but CNet’s source said Apple is having trouble packing the huge number of pixels necessary into a 10-inch screen.

Retina display, according to Apple’s definition, means the “display’s pixel density is so high, your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels.” the iPhone 4S features a retina display with a resolution of 960×620. Apple packed 326 pixels per inch (PPI) into the 3.5-inch screen to give graphics a super sharp, seamless look. It’s the most detail a human retina can see at a distance of 12 inches, Apple has said.

CNet noted that it’s not possible to cram that many pixels into the iPad 3. display manufacturers like Samsung and LG have created displays with a maximum of 2,048×1,536 resolution, for 264 PPI, and at this point, that’s as high as they’ve been able to take the resolution of tablet’s screens. While that’s twice the 132 PPI on the iPad 2, it’s still not quite retina display.

Apple is faced with another problem too. CNet said it might not be possible for manufacturers to produce such a high volume of these displays to satisfy demand for the iPad 3.

CNet’s source said “[LG and Samsung] have production plans for 2,048×1,536 displays. Starting in November. but those are the only plans at this point.”

Whether Apple will be able to kick the resolution up, while still meeting demand, remains to be seen. but if it can’t reach that level, CNet said it will compromise with a 1,600×1,200 resolution.

Many sources have predicted that Apple will release the iPad 3 in March. the most recent rumor, via Macotakara, claimed the tablet will have a smaller dock which could cause compatibility issues with older Apple gadgets.

Toshiba develops 6.1-inch 498ppi LCD capable of ...

Toshiba Mobile Display has already impressed us this week by unveiling a 4.3-inch display that has a higher pixel density than the iPhone 4′s Retina Display. But little did we know the company had another, even more impressive display ready to show off a day later.

The screen you see above is a 6.1-inch LCD Toshiba hopes will make its way into tablet devices. That’s an unusual size for tablets, which are typically 7 or 10-inches. However, some manufacturers may want to consider using it due to the resolution and image quality the LCD panel can achieve.

Toshiba has managed to squeeze 498 pixels per square inch (ppi) into this panel. it can display images at a resolution much higher than 1080p, more specifically it tops out at 2,560 x 1,600. Imagine how good your photographs would look on this thing. Add to that viewing angles of 176 degrees both horizontally and vertically, a contrast ratio of 1000:1, as well as a 61% NTSC color gamut allowing for 16.7 million colors.

Photographs seem to be what Toshiba is gearing this towards, stating the output is “photographic quality” and adds both “depth and realism” to any image. Depending on the price, it should make for a very nice digital photo frame, but also holds promise as part of a smaller tablet that promotes high resolution image viewing and very crisp text output for e-reading.

Now that Toshiba has managed to create such a high resolution display, it doesn’t seem out of the question to expect a 7- and 10-inch version to appear before long.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0….PLUS

1024×600 on a 7″ gives it a greater pixel density than the present iPad with 1024×768 on a 9.7″ screen. The iPad does have IPS for wide viewing angles but Samsung’s PLS is a superior technology that provides more clarity as well as wide viewing angles.

The 1.2GHz dual core processor should give a little over 50% performance boost over the original tab. while the iPad2 is also dual core but only 1GHz.

MicroSD card slot is something not always available on tablets. RIM Playbook, Apple’s iPad, among others have no expansion options.

Main camera is a bit weak at 3MP, when many are now offering 5-8MP, but the 2MP front facing camera should be good enough for video chats.

Physical improvement over the original Tab is this one won’t be as easy to slip out of your hands. Original Tab had a bit of a too smooth back that could slip from your grip if you didn’t keep a good hold on it.

Honeycomb is a nice improvement to the OS and Samsung’s TouchWiz is a lot better than when it first came out. though like any custom UI it may not appeal to everyone.

Overall, it looks like a good successor to the original but these days people care more about the price.
