Dell Streak 7 Review:

Dell is renowned for making computers of the highest quality and is a huge player in the computer market, but there are certainly bigger players in the tablet market. Dell’s Streak 7 is an enlarged version of the Streak 5, and it promises a good load of features. Dell promises to bring its computing technology and reliability to the tablets. Does it stand up to the quality that we’ve all known Dell for? Does it deliver all that it promises? We’ll have a closer look and bring you the facts.

Hardware:

The design of the Streak 7 is much like the Streak 5, only larger. the Dell Streak 7, as the name suggests, has a 7 inch screen. the size is decent, and one can hold it in one hand. the design is mostly plastic, and there are 3 capacitative buttons. the back of the device is patterned and makes for a good grip. overall, the device looks simple and stylish. on the left side of the tablet, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack. on the right, you would find the slots for the SIM card and the SD card. you also have two speakers, on both the edges. on the top you have the volume rocker and the power button. One gets a feeling that Dell built this to be used in the landscape mode, rather than in the portrait mode, seeing the alignment of the buttons. you also get corning gorilla glass protection for the screen which ensures it is scratchproof. overall, the build quality is good. it isn’t the best build quality we’ve seen, but it’s very good.

Performance:

The Dell Streak 7 comes loaded with Android 2.2 Froyo OS and is powered by a 1 Ghz Qualcomm processor. the 7 inch screen has a resolution of 800 x 480, which is pretty ordinary. One would expect better from Dell here. the viewing angles are poor as well. Dell is a new player in the tablet market, and it shows. Dell hasn’t done too good a job with its navigation as well. There is a huge scope for improvement here. the navigation isn’t very smooth or flawless. Coming to media performance, it is decent, but not the best. you can download e-book reading apps and reading e-books is very comfortable, especially in the landscape mode. the video quality is average, especially owing to the poor screen resolution. the music is quite good though. the 1 Ghz Qualcomm processor does well with high end usage, and it is likely that you would have a comfortable experience while performing high-end tasks, such as browsing content rich web pages and playing games. the battery life is pretty ordinary, and hence it could do with some improvement as well. the camera is 5 MP and the photographs are good. it also has a front VGA camera for video calling.

Conclusion:

Dell is a new player in the tablet market and it would take a few launches to get everything right. There are much more experienced players who provide the same facilities on paper and better experience in practice to the user at the same price. Hence, it is advisable to go for them. the design of the Dell Streak 7 is good, but there is a huge scope for improvement on a lot of other aspects.

Verizon’s Motorola Xoom gets Android 4.0 Ice ...

Verizon has kept good to their word, having released the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system update for the Motorola Xoom tablet. This is definitely a plus point on Verizon’s part, as it is not easy keeping promises these days, since we have seen our fair share of reneged claims in the past concerning operating system updates in particular. the entire update is not light at all – we are looking at a 107.9MB download, so depending on the kind of connection you have, the downloading process varies.

There is a really long list of enhancements and fixes made with the update, but just to highlight a few, they include fixed 4G LTE upgrade issues, the ability to successfully connect to a 4G LTE network immediately after DUAL IMSI switch, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) policy improvements, correctly working EAS security and synchronization, an optimized EAS setup, a new system font (Roboto) for improved readability, as well as improved screen rotation response time amongst others. you can also pull the update manually if for some reason your Verizon Motorola Xoom has failed to retrieve the update automatically.

Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook test

Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook might be a good alternative for the ones which still does not prefer the Mac Book Air. as much of those guys would hate the Mac Book Air, they have to admit that now there are not many Windows options in that area, especially since Apple sells it for $999.

As Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook comes with a $899 price for the 1.7 Ghz i5 Intel processor, it looks like a saving solution for the groups of Windows Ultrabooks buyers. and it does not just come with a low price. Acer promises that Aspire S3 Ultrabook will wake up from its sleep in just 2 seconds and also it will be connected to its network in just half a second. not to mention that Aspire S3 Ultrabook features USB 3.0 and SSD storage. Boy, this ultrabook is pure gold…

Acer is honored to offer the Aspire S3 Ultrabook on the market , a 13-inch, Intel Ultrabook series, laptop . this type of computer should bring the  mobility and versatility of the tablet PC for just $899.

We were fortunate to be among the first to take the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook for a test in our laboratory, just before it flew to the rest of its World Tour. The Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook  we are testing is powered with Intel Core i5 and SSD storage. now it surely looks like a good investment, compared to Mac Book Air and its $999 price.

Thin and light, are the first words that come when you have the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook in your hands. in these two points, we can confirm that it meets the Intel conditions, having a thickness of just 1.33 cm and 1.35 kgs. of course, these measurements have been done with the closed lid of the new Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook. The consumer can not change the battery or hard drive or the SSD itself. The RAM memory is contained by the motherboard, so there is nopossibility to change this, either.

For a so compact unit , Acer has obviously tightened its components, but also used lightweight materials. thus, the chassis of the new Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook is made of magnesium and aluminum. in fact, only the upper part of the chassis is made of aluminum. The keyboard is the only plastic part of the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook.

Some flaws on Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook

Even if the Ultrabook seems to be well-built, it still has some flaws. they can not be definitively attributed to poor design, but the copy of Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook  that we tested is a Sample, a non-final version of the device. We note as well as the hinge of the screen shows a lot of play. this may be due to the many manipulations that Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook had to endure during many presentations. in addition, the black plastic back cover which does not stay in place and detaches easily. Hopefully these points will be corrected in the final version of the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook.

Acer has made a good and sustained efforts on the ergonomics of the new Aspire S3 Ultrabook. Pleasant to the touch it is also fairly well organized. Unlike most laptops, the connection is not on its sides, but in the back of the ultrabook, just below the screen. this allows to have free sides which gives more space to the user. On the contrary, it is a stupid ideea when it comes to plug an USB stick.

The connector consists of two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port and a power jack. Yes, Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook gives limited communication possibilities, but in less than 2 cm thick, it seems hard to beat that numbers.

A microphone misplaced on the new Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook

On the sides of the ultrabook, there are two openings, one for SD and MMC cards and the other one needed to plugin some headphones. There is no possibility to connect a headset with a minijack. The Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook  is equipped with its own microphone next to the keyboard. The only regret we had with this fact is that the microphone captures all the sounds as you type. next to the webcam would have been a better choice.

Meanwhile, the keyboard on Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook gave us a pleasant surprise. Its keys are nice. they have a short stroke and soft  seizure, which is ideal for hours of working without fatigue. However, as on many computers less than 13 inches, the arrow keys are neglected and too narrow. and as a little touch of madness, Acer cut the “Enter” key in half, placing on its top a shortcut to the backslash. why would you do that thing?

Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook comes

with two new technologies: the Green Instant On and Instant Connect. they are created in order to meet Intel’s conditions for ultrabooks. Intel wants a quick start. therefore, the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook can come out of standby mode in just 2 seconds and can access the Internet after another half a second. with these scores, Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook sets some records, definitely.

In standby mode, thanks to the Instant Connect, the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook is capable of staying 50 days, according to Acer. as we had this ultrabook a day in the writing process, it was difficult to control this value. However, we were able to test its autonomy in some normal applications. Its battery resisted for 7 hours (almost a working day). an intensive test, using all the memory and processor load, drained the battery in just one hour and forty minutes. this does not represent the standard standby time, but it is good to know that multiplying the number of applications, the battery will be drained very fast. Using the Internet and some office applications didn’t seem to be a problem for the baterry autonomy of Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook.

And since we’re talking about Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook’s good things, then this is a good opportunity to mention the charger. it is very compact compared to the average of this class, even if it is far from that of a MacBook Air.

Powered by the Core i7 1.7 GHz processor, an 128 GB SSD and 4 GB of RAM, Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook is responsive and meets the requirements of most of the users. even the graphics is honest. There is an Intel GMA HD3000 with dedicated 128 MB . The surprise was to see Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook running a recent game (Torchlight in this case) with all the graphics options enabled, scoring between 45 and 60 frames per second, with very good flow.

The 13 inches display on Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook is also good, even if it is not a high-end one. The resolution is 1366 x 768 pixels. The colors are very natural and also it is the contrast.

At this moment, we can not find a better alternative to Apple’s Macbook Air. However, it is important to remember that the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook finishing is below the laptop from Cupertino. There is no entire frame aluminium chassis here. nevertheless, with the equivalent configuration, the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook is sold with $100 less than the MacBook Air.

But don’t forget that Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook inspires confidence in this new area of ultrabooks . soon, other manufacturers such as Asus will launch their solutions. until now it was the netbook and the tablet time. will 2012 be the year of Ultrabook?
