Reader Mail – Questions on the Acer Iconia ...

Reader Johhny wrote in this week with the following questions:

“Hey I like the detail of your review, and it’s too bad you had a hard time with the A510, but how can you recommend an Asus 300 after all of that? please do a review on that tablet if possible. I just bought an a510 but might return it. So far I’ve only really had minor problems with the responsiveness of the touchscreen (compared to an ipad 2 I have access to).”

Thanks so much for writing in, Johnny. I am not sure what you mean by how can I recommend an Asus TF300 after my Acer A510 review. Maybe you mean how could I possibly recommend another Android tablet as an alternative to the A510, or how could I recommend the TF300 having not reviewed it. in the case of the former, I have owned and reviewed several Android tablets, and none of them have been as problematic as the A510 I reviewed. I am confident in recommending other Android tablets as alternatives to users for whom an Android tablet is the right fit.

If it is the latter, my recommendation may have come across as more authoritative than I intended. what I am saying is that if you are going to roll the dice on one of those two tablets, with the quality of the A510 being suspect IMO, I would choose to roll it on the TF300. At least if you are wrong you will not be laying out the extra $50 while you are waiting for a refund. in general, I would also say that Asus’ line of Android tablets have shown a better trend of both performance and quality from what I have observed. I loved my Acer A500 before I got rid of it, but things like the poor wireless connectivity of the A510 (a problem I have seen on every Android variant of the Acer Iconia Tab product-line), its lack of a flash on the rear-facing camera, and Acer’s lack of response on questions I sent in while the review was in progress, lead me to have little faith in the A510 as a product.

I have a few more days to wrap up my time with the Samsung ChromeBox XE300. I will see if it is possible to go back and take a look at the Asus TF300 if time permits. Thanks again for writing in. – Vr/Jay

Hands On: Toshiba LX835 All-in-One Desktop

Toshiba has had very few desktop PC models available in the U.S. for the past 10 years, but it has come back recently with its DX1215 and DX735 models, which were among last year’s crop of touch-screen desktops. this year, Toshiba is releasing a pair of newly designed models, and we got a chance to look at one.

The Toshiba LX835 is a 23-inch, all-in-one desktop with a true 1080p HD (1,920-by-1,080) resolution touch screen. It improves on the previous model by using capacitive touch technology, an improvement over the infrared touch screen of the previous generation. now the screen is totally seamless edge-to-edge, which makes the touch screen easier to use and easier to clean. The screen also supports up to 10 points of touch, matching a requirement for Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system. The system we looked at was running a preview version of Windows 8, and the screen responsiveness was as good as most modern smartphones and tablets with capacitive screens. The screen’s colors and brightness matched what we’ve come to expect from Toshiba displays, bright and clear.

The LX835 uses an easel-style stand, which is simpler than the floating pedestal of the DX735. The system has recessed I/O ports on the left-hand side, including a media card slot and USB 3.0 ports. There’s a TV tuner connection on the back for the high-end configuration, along with an IR blaster for compatibility with set-top boxes.

Other check boxes on the features list include a slot-loading Blu-ray drive, HDMI input port, third-generation Intel Core processors, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 3TB hard drives, and built-in Onkyo speakers with SRS premium sound. A wireless keyboard and mouse use a hidden micro-USB receiver. one of the USB ports is a USB sleep and charge port, which lets you charge your tablet or smartphone while the system is asleep or off. Toshiba’s all-in-one desktops are rated EPEAT Gold and are Energy Star 5.0 compliant, so they’re economical to run.

Toshiba’s 21.5-inch LX815 starts at $599.99, and the 23-inch LX835 starts at 879.99. look for both systems at best Buy, online from e-tailers, and Toshiba.

Also today, Toshiba revamped its Satellite and Qosmio laptop lines.

Archos 35 Internet Tablet shows up in France ...

Looks like they’re still using a resistive screen but unlike many other companies Archos usually does a good job optimizing responsiveness for a resistive screen and is harder to tell it apart from how a capacitive would work for you.

However, Archos hardware does have it’s faults though.  My experience with a A70 for example, after just under a year of use, is run time now less than a hour, TS keeps losing calibration, screen rotation keeps getting stuck, edge of TS less responsive and forces me to use in portrait mode for more consistent usage, and the kick stand hinge pin popped out just recently.

Though of course everyone’s experience will be different but for the price you shouldn’t expect too much. but it was good when new…  While smaller models should be more durable and Archos has more years of experiencing at designing PMP’s anyway.

Mind though Apple is lowering the base price of their iTouch to $199 now and other similar products are starting to show up.  So there are more choices coming…
