iPad grabs more than 70 percent of China’s ...

Though Apple has faced legal issues in China, theiPad is by far the most populartablet among Chinese consumers.

The iPad’s market share jumped to 72.6 percent in the second quarter, according to market research firm Analysys International. As reported by China Daily, that number proved to be a 20 percent rise over the first quarter of the year.

The second-quarter surge was triggered by two factors, according to Analysys. The latest edition of the iPad wasn’t even available for purchase in China until the second quarter. And price cuts on the iPad 2 convinced many customers to opt for the second-generation model.

In second place behind Apple was Lenovo with 8.4 percent of the Chinese tablet market. Samsung followed with a 3.5 percent share in the second quarter.

The iPad’s total worldwide market share for the second quarter was recently pegged at 68.2 percent by IDC, up slightly from a year ago.

At the same time the iPad has proven a hit among Chinese users, Apple has bumped into legal skirmishes in the country.

The company recently had to shell out $60 million to settle a dispute with Proview Technology over the iPad trademark. Apple also now faces a patent infringement suit in China over its Facetime video technology.

Lenovo IdeaPad U310, U410 ultrabooks get an Ivy ...

Lenovo has announced plans for its first ultrabooks featuring Intel Ivy Bridge processors — but these two thin and light laptops aren’t entirely new. The company is updating the Lenovo IdeaPad U310 and U410 ultrabooks it introduced earlier this year with new 3rd generation Intel Core family processors. They initially sported second generation “Sandy Bridge” chips.”

The new Ivy Bridge processors offer better graphics performance and a slight CPU performance boost while reducing power consumption.

The Lenovo IdeaPad U310 has a 13.3 inch display, measures 0.7 inches thick, and weighs 3.7 pounds. The U410 has a 14 inch display and is 0.8 inches thick and 4.2 pounds.

Both models will be available with Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 processors. Lenovo will offer up to 500GB of storage on the 13 inch model, with a 32GB hard drive and solid state disk for cache. Lenovo says you should get up to 7 hours of battery life from this model.

If you opt for the larger 14 inch model you can get up to 1TB of storage, 9 hours of battery life, and optional NVIDIA GeForce graphics.

But I really wish Intel would impose stricter weight limits on ultrabooks. At 4.2 pounds, there’s a big difference between the Lenovo IdeaPad U410 and a smaller ultrabook like the HP Envy Spectre XT or Asus Zenbook UX31.

The Lenovo IdeaPad U310 will carry a starting price of $749, while the IdeaPad U410 will start at $799. They’re expected to be available this month in the US, UK, Germany, India, China, Japan, and Russia.

If you act fast, and have a preference for Sandy Bridge processors for some reason, you can still grab an IdeaPad U310 from Lenovo’s web store right now. But the larger U410 has yet to go on sale, so the first version to hit the market will probably be the new Ivy Bridge model.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10-inch and 7-inch Review

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab line continues to expand, with the latest additions coming in the form of the Galaxy Tab 2 Series. the Galaxy Tab 2 Series is available in 10.1-inch and 7.0-inch screen sizes. while these second-generation models clearly borrow some design cues and other specifications from their predecessors, we were a bit surprised to find out that not a lot has changed from the first-generation models to the new Galaxy Tab 2 series, at least in terms of their internal components.

In fact, many of the key specifications of the first-generation 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab match that of the second-generation Galaxy Tab 2: there’s a 10.1-inch WXGA (1280×800) display, 1GHz dual-core processor, and 1GB of RAM. the biggest difference between the two 10.1-inch Galaxy Tabs is price: the second-generation model costs $100 less than its older brother.

The story for the 7.0-inch Galaxy Tab is much the same: similar specifications, but the second-generation model has a price tag that’s $100 lower. one key advantage both of the new-generation Galaxy Tab 2 tablets offer is the fact that they run on Android 4.0. both tablets also feature an integrated IR blaster for universal remote capabilities. Although the Galaxy Tab 2 may not offer a lot of new features from its predecessors in the Galaxy Tab lineup, the lower price puts both of these tablets in the mid-range tablet category rather than in the premium category. Given the popularity of tablets and the fact that more people are generally interested in lower cost tablets, rather than a premium price tag, it makes sense that Samsung wants to compete in this space.

Fact-Checking Digitimes, the Taiwanese Apple Rumor ...

Those are the disclaimers issued last week by tech journalists who wrote about a rumor — first reported by Taipei-based electronics newspaper and news site Digitimes — that Apple will respond to the arrival of second-generation Ultrabook laptops by releasing a $799 MacBook Air in the third quarter of this year.

They weren’t the first reporters to spread one of Digitimes’s Apple rumors while expressing caution about the odds that it amounted to anything. For years, Digitimes has been a high-profile rumormonger when it comes to upcoming Apple products, usually crediting its gossip to the Asian component makers who supply Apple with bits and pieces of technology. (The publication says, for instance, that “sources from the upstream supply chain” told it about the $799 Air.) its stories get covered widely — sometimes by writers who pause to express a certain degree of doubt, and sometimes by ones who don’t.

But the thing is, Digitimes isn’t just wrong some of the time. when it comes to the big Apple stories, it’s wrong most of the time. sometimes wildly so. It’s reported that its sources had said that Apple was going to release MacBooks with AMD processors, iMacs with touch screens, iPhones with built-in projectors and iPads with OLED displays. those products, and others mentioned in Digitimes articles, never showed up.

A Digitimes defender might argue that the publication always says that the Apple rumors it reports are merely what it’s heard from various sources. Which is true. but at least some of its sources appear to be so lousy that suppressing their scuttlebutt would make more sense than publicizing it — and partway through its stories, it sometimes stops hedging and starts stating the rumor as fact.

The continued willingness of other tech journalists to take its Apple reporting even semi-seriously is a potent example of the Jeane Dixon effect at work. Dixon (1904-1997), the celebrated American astrologer/psychic, told Parade magazine in 1956 that the president elected in 1960 would be a Democrat, and that he’d die in office. that was enough to let her claim that she’d predicted John F. Kennedy‘s assassination, a triumph that she spent decades milking. even though she later predicted that Nixon would win the 1960 election. and that World War III would break out in 1958. and that cancer would be cured in 1967.

Like Dixon, Digitimes still has an audience. It doesn’t seem to matter whether the prognostications it publishes come true or not, and no amount of being wrong is enough to ruin its reputation.

That’s not to say that Digitimes never gets anything right — sometimes it breaks news that actually turns out to be news. as I thought about the $799 MacBook Air rumor and the chances it might pan out, I decided to revisit old Digitimes stories to get a better sense of its batting average. I ended up fact-checking 25 of them.

Here’s what I found:

The Digitimes story: “New iPod may have wireless capabilities,” 8/16/2006

The rumor: Apple will “soon” take on Microsoft‘s wi-fi-enabled Zune MP3 player by releasing an iPod with built-in wireless capabilities — and is already training Asian salespeople how to demonstrate them.

The upshot: Apple doesn’t introduce anything which is called an iPod and has wi-fi until more than a year later, when it launches the iPod Touch. even today, more conventional iPods, such as the Nano and Classic, don’t have wi-fi.

The Digitimes story: “Sources in passive component industry say AMD-based Apple notebook in the works,” 11/15/2006

The rumor: Apple is planning to release a laptop that uses a processor from AMD rather than Intel.

The upshot: Almost six years later, Apple still isn’t using AMD CPUs.

The upshot: Apple releases an updated version of the existing 15.4″ MacBook Pro in the second quarter. but it never introduces a plain MacBook at that screen size.

The Digitimes story: “Apple reportedly to postpone Leopard to support Windows Vista,” 3/23/2007

The rumor: Apple will delay the release of OS X 10.5 Leopard from April to October so its Boot Camp feature can support Windows Vista out of the box.

The upshot: Apple does postpone Leopard’s release until October. but it says that it’s doing so because it needs to borrow some OS X engineers to finish up work on the iPhone.

The Digitimes story: “NAND flash-based iPod video to put strain on supply, say component makers,” 8/6/2007

The rumor: A new iPod based on NAND flash memory will introduce video playback.

The upshot: Apple does announce flash-based iPods with video playback in September — both the iPod Touch and the first iPod Nano with that capability.

The rumor: Apple may use an Intel “Moorestown” processor designed for “MID” (Mobile Internet Device) gadgets in an upcoming iPhone.

The upshot: If Apple considers making an Intel iPhone, it doesn’t move forward with the idea.

The Digitimes story: “Wintek to supply touch panels for Apple netbook, says paper,” 3/9/2009

The rumor: Apple has a deal with Taiwan’s Wintek to supply touch screens for a new netbook.

The source: a report in The Commercial Times, another paper that publishes a lot of Digitimes-like gossip — but only in Chinese, sadly

The upshot: A false alarm, unless you consider the iPad to be a netbook.

The Digitimes story: “Foxlink developing micro projectors for handsets, say sources,” 7/6/2009

The rumor: a Taiwanese company is finishing work on microprojectors which Apple and other companies will reportedly build into phones in the second half of the year.

The upshot: Apple still hasn’t released any products with built-in projectors.

The Digitimes story: “Apple tablet PC reportedly delayed until 2H10, with OLED model now included,” 11/19/2009

The rumor: Apple is delaying the release of its unannounced tablet from March until the second half of the year. It’ll offer a 9.7″ OLED-screen model for around $1200-$1500 and a 10.6″ LCD one for about $800-$100. Subsidies for 3G contracts could bring the prices down.

The upshot: This story almost has more errors than it does sentences.

The Digitimes story: “Apple to launch 22-inch touch-enabled all-in-one PC in 2010, says paper,” 1/18/2010

The rumor: In 2010, Apple will start selling a 22″ Mac with a touch screen — its first Mac so equipped. (Steve Jobs himself had said in the past that touch interfaces didn’t make sense for conventional PCs.)

I have used the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for a few days as an additional device to my desktop computer, my MacBook Pro (running Windows), my Macbook Air (running Windows) and my Smartphone ( I use two of them when abroad). since I have bought the Macbook Air, I do not use a tablet for meetings as much anymore, it has become more of an entertainment device from which I watch movies in my bed or in the plane, read news and books, play with apps (ie angry Birds, Music apps), Skype/chat with friends, check Facebook updates, play music on a mini Bluetooth speaker.

External design (very good – better than previous model)

Although the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) is slightly thicker and lighter than the previous Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (9.7 mm/ 0.38” vs. 8.6 mm/0.33”) I like its design better, mainly because the uniform matte silver finish on the backside makes it more elegant. this time, Samsung kept the differently colored area that covers the top of the device to a minimum, which conveys a more harmonious look.

Another noticeable change in the form factor is the addition of larger and front facing speaker grills, positioned on the edges and close to the top of the display (see video and pictures). this might improve the audio quality, although most people use headphones or a wireless speaker when it comes to watch movies or listen to music on tablets. In fact, we can surely blame it on the consumers’ appetite for thinness and lightness. For that reason, it is not quite possible yet to deliver  portable-speaker grade audio quality to tablets.

The camera does not have a LED flash anymore, I guess the manufacturer made a cost reduction decision here. we  know that most people who use a tablet own a smartphone as well and prefer to use the latter to shoot photos.

Samsung still insist to feature its proprietary 30-pin connector, and still does not offer a HDMI port (the 30 pin IF connector is HDMI compatible via an adapter). There is a microSD Card slot to expand the storage capacity up to 32GB which is great for people who loves to own and watch a lot of movies.

Display (very good)

Samsung  is one of the top providers of LCD panels in the world, and as such, its mobile display offering is always top notch. Compared to the iPad 3 at maximum brightness, the Galaxy Tab 2 has a comparable quality, although it is a hair more reflective. both have a similar footprint (9.7″ and 10.1″) but the latest iPad (gen 3) has a higher pixel density since it has a much higher resolution (2048×1536 vs. 1280×800)

I personally prefer to watch movies on the Samsung device since the video is displayed in a larger size and the image quality, in term of contrast and colors, is very similar. Additionally, I have more fun using the Android YouTube app with its 3D carousel than the one designed for iOS.

When compared to the previous Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Asus Transformer Pad TF300, at maximum brightness, the Tab 2 display offers a similar image quality.

In direct sunlight, the Galaxy Tab 2 is still readable, and offers the same reflectiveness as the iPad 3. the viewing angle is quite good as well, and comparable to the iPad 3 (see pictures).

Virtual Keyboard with handwriting recognition (very good)

The Samsung keyboard, available by default, has been updated and it is slightly different than the one running on Android 3.2 in the previous Galaxy Tab 10.1 model (an Android 4.0 ICS update is supposed to be coming soon). the main difference is the handwriting recognition capability, a great feature that has been initially developed for the Samsung Galaxy Note.

The Samsung handwriting recognition technology is fast, very accurate, and delivers better performance than some competing applications that we have seen at MWC. to switch from typing to handwriting, you simply have to hit the key with a T and a pen (see picture). this feature is also accessible from the S-Memo application where you can mix drawings with text, photos and videos, exactly like in the Galaxy Note. I have tested a similar app preloaded in the Asus Transformer Pad TF 300, SuperNote, but the Samsung one’s is better in general, and the Asus’ SuperNote does not offer handwriting recognition.

In the previous model, you had the choice between the custom keyboard from Samsung or the Android one. In the Tab 2, only the Samsung keyboard is available and you can switch on and off the Google Voice typing feature from the Settings. When activated, Google Voice typing is accessible directly from the key with the microphone icon (picture).

Additionally, the Swiftkey Tablet X trial keyboard is preloaded and accessible from the Settings in the “Language and Input” menu. Swiftkey runs an awesomely fast and accurate predictive typing algorithm that can also handle three languages simultaneously without slowing down the process!

Audio (good)

SpeakersThe audio quality is good for a tablet. I have compared the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with the iPad 3, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the iPad 2 using the same song with the same streaming service over WiFi.

All tablets offer a comparable audio quality, however, the iPad 3 is slightly better than all the other ones. the iPad 3 plays audio with deeper and clearer sound texture, both the Tab and the Tab 2 sound a little more acute and slightly more “metallic”.

HeadphonesWith headphones, the audio quality is good, better than with the built-in speakers, the sound quality is comparable for all devices, the Galaxy Tab 2 still sounds a little bit more metallic than all the other devices.

Performance and hardware (good)

Perceived performance (good)

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 runs a 1Ghz dual-core processor which is now a regular component for tablets. this processor is similar to the 1GHz dual-core NVidia Tegra 2 that powers the previous Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.  Since the device is reasonably priced at $399.99, we can imagine that is the reason why the manufacturer did not push the processing power performance too far.

Tested against the iPad 3 which runs a 1GHz Apple A5X dual-core processor with quad-core GPU, the Tab 2 is slightly slower in general. it has same perceived performance as the Galaxy Tab 10.1” from last year. the Asus Transformer Pad TF300 is slightly faster than the Tab 2, and the device retails at a similar price.

The difference in speed does not bother me at all, since I can perform all the tasks I need to do very smoothly. Hubert, having a graphic engineering background, is more sensitive to it.

Measured Performance (good)The measured performance confirmed what we suspected while testing the tablet. the Asus Transformer Pad TF300 is faster than the Tab 2 on all the benchmarks we ran (see below). Regarding the comparison with the iPad 3 we can only run Sunspider that measure Javascript performance, and again, the Apple tablet is faster.

SunSpider measures Javascript performance, a key language used in the most interactive websites. Javascript is used to execute scripts within a webpage. this test does not in anyway represent web browsing experience.

Nenamark 2 is a test aimed at measuring the graphics processor performance. it is handy, but keep in mind that the latest games use much more complex techniques that are not represented in this test. As expected, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1” delivers weaker performance on that front than other tablets with beefier processors and GPUs – such as  the 1.2 Ghz and 1.3 GHz Tegra 3 Quad Core that powers the Asus Transformer Pad TF300 and the Asus Transformer Prime, respectively.

Antutu is an overall system performance benchmark (CPU, graphics, storage), and what it shows is that overall, most recent tablets land in a comparable performance footprint. this means that unless you do something very specific (like “gaming” or “downloads”), those tablets should provide a similar overall performance. both Transformers are twice as fast here as te Tab 2, because each has two more cores than the Tab 2.

Applications

On the home screen, you have access by default to the TouchWIZ widgets (Weather, Media Game Hub, Music Hub) and the following application icons: Readers Hub, Email, Camera,YouTube,Maps, Browser, Samsung App store, Google Play Store

I will give a brief overview of the applications that are mostly used, although I will skip email, calendar and contacts, since those applications are now well known on Android.

Samsung Mini Apps 

Samsung Mini Apps are very convenient because they are available across the OS from the bottom sliding navigation bar and they can run on top of any other application, no need to switch from one to the other. the Pen Memo app has been replaced by a quick access to your email. An Alarm clock and a World Clock have been added to the tray as well.

In my opinion one of the most useful app here is the Task Manager, that allows to close applications running in the background.

Mini Apps include:- Alarm Clock- Calculator- Email- Music player- S Planner (calendar)- World Clock

Web Browsing with Flash Support (very good)

The browsing experience offers a rapid loading time, scrolling and pinch-to-zoom are fluid and fast. unlike the iPad 3 (as you all know), the browser supports Flash.

Google Maps with 3DThe Google maps app (v5) has been redesigned for Honeycomb to take full advantage of the larger screen size featured in tablets.

The most notable addition is the 3D rendering you get in compass mod. In version 6.3, the compass is accessible using touch gestures, the building can be seen in 3 D when you zoom in closely enough. this is not the most intuitive way to get to this I guess.

Over WiFi in my office, my location was instantly found very accurately and I just had to type the name of a local restaurant to get an immediate result.

The revamped Android 3.0 / 4.0 Google Maps app provides more features than the one in the iPad: places gives access to default POIs-restaurants, bars, coffee, attractions, ATMs, Gas Stations…- and you can create your own as well, I tried “parking” and it worked very well. the layers menu provide various ‘layers’ that you can apply to your map such as Traffic, Buzz (status update from people on the map), satellite, terrain, latitude (where your friends are), and Wikipedia which gives information about POIs.

Google Talk with Video ChatGoogle Talk worked well when calling from the Tab 2 to the Transformer Pad over WiFi. I personally prefer Skype’s user experience. the image quality was decent, although not great.

SkypeI tried the Skype application, with a call from the Tab 2 to a Desktop PC, the video quality on both side was very good for a mobile device.

Media and Entertainment (good)

IR Remote controlDuring its market research, Samsung has noticed that most people were using their tablets at home nearby their television, audio equipment and other entertainment devices. That’s why the company has added an Infrared emitter to the Galaxy Tab 2. With it, the tablet can turn into a smart remote that will have no problem beating the good old remote control. obviously, you wouldn’t buy a tablet to use it only as a remote, but now that you have it anyway, turning it into a remote is pretty cool.

Photo and video capture –  (good, but during testing the AF did not work) 

For the mobile market, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2’s back facing camera is regular, which may be sufficient since most people do not take pictures with their tablets. the 3 MP rear camera shoot pretty decent pictures, when I tried it I was unable to make the focus work. this might just be a bug that may not occur on all units – I need to check on this with Samsung.

Compared to the Asus Transformer Pad TF300 (8 MP) and the iPad 3 (5 MP) which offer the best cameras in the tablet market to date, the photos taken with the Tab 2 are quite good and well contrasted, although the colors are a bit less realistic (see photo of the street) and the image seem a bit more blurry in some areas. the iPad 3 has a tendency to deliver over exposed images when the in total bright sunlight, that have the only advantage of providing more details in the parts of the images that were in the shade.

I regret the lack of a LED flash, but again, this might have to do with the fact that people rarely use their tablets to snap pictures,especially in low light conditions.

YouTube and HD Video Playback (very good)

I really like the YouTube application for Android over the one in iOS, the 3D carousel is fun to use. I played several HD trailers from YouTube both on the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1” and on the iPad 3 – the video playback is fluid, the image quality is similar and very good on both devices.

I personally prefer the experience on the Samsung tablet since the video is played in a larger size than on the iPad.

Battery Life (to be updated)

Samsung did not provide an estimated battery life. we just know that the Li-Polymer battery has a higher capacity  (7,000 mAh) than the one featured in the previous 10-inch Galaxy Tab  featuringI will update this review with our battery life testing.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 delivers good performance packaged in a nice design for a reasonable price ($399.99). At that price point, the Asus Transformer Pad TF300 (32GB) offers a lower build-quality packaged in a heavier body (1.28 pounds vs. 1.39 pounds without dock), but provides higher performance.

Beside Android 4.0 and the enhanced Samsung TouchWIZ interface, the most noticeable addition to the 10-inch Galaxy Tab next-gen is the handwriting recognition and the S memo application, a feature that is not available in the Transformer Pad. we could add the IR remote control capability as a nice feature that the Asus device does not provide as well.

We are happy to see that competition is heating up in the 10-inch tablets below $400, and that is certainly good news for consumers.

The overall computing power and the good built quality (display, audio) are largely sufficient to perform the usual tasks for work – email, calendar, web browsing, video conferencing – and for entertainment – social network apps, video and audio playback, drawing. the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1  is a fairly good choice for people who want to save $100 to $175 (32 GB models) on the purchase of a secondary computing device.

Acer Iconia Tab A510 Now on Pre-Order in the US, ...

Acer’s latest tablet, the Iconia Tab A510, is now up for pre-order bookings in the US and Canada. The tablet is based on the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad core processor, 1 GB of RAM, and has a 10 inch display that has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.

Among the tablet’s features is an 85 degree viewing angle. it also has support for 1080p HD playback and runs Android 4.0 ICS. The tablet also has a micro HDMI output through which it can be connected to a TV or monitor. it also has a micro USB port along with the ability to belt out Dolby audio sound output.

For connectivity, the A510 comes with 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Applications that the device comes pre-loaded with include Acer’s very own Clear.fi application along with Polaris Office. The Cler.fi application gives the tablet capability to stream content to phones, other tablet PCs or other storage devices. As for the tablet’s battery back-up times, Acer is claiming it to be around 12 hours.

Prices start at $449.99 for the base version, which seems to be the special Olympic versions that Acer had launched a while ago.

Acer Iconia A200, the latest in home Acer … Device wonderful as we all know and imitated, as all accessories apple.

Let’s take a look at the features of an Iconia A200 second generation, the first thing we notice is that it is thinner than the first (actually even thinner than an iphone 4), is lighter, has a 9.7 inch screen with LED backlighting technology, has two cameras, one front and one rear useful for FaceTime calls or take pictures. Mount the final chip A5, a dual-core microprocessor, which speeds up in a really good device performance, features Android Os software, which allows you to manipulate the Iconia A200 with multi-touch that is touching it with 2 or more fingers can make different actions, has an accelerometer that allows you to shoot at will in a vertical or horizontal, the work we are doing will rotate based on the location of the device. Dimensions: Height: 241.2 mm Width: 185.7 mm Depth: 8.8 mm Iconia A200Weight: 601 g Unlike the first Iconia A200 is found in 2 colors white and black-backed aluminum, has existed for 16, 32, 64 Gb technology wifi or 3g and wifi, the 3g is used to connect to the Internet via the telephone network (such as mobile phones) . I find it a really nice device and charming, but that does not replace a PC today, unfortunately, it is definitely lighter and more maneuverable than a notebook or netbook, and we portarcelo around more comfortably, with data music film, but has always need a PC to sync with itunes, this is a big flaw in my opinion. I do not know if you recommend it or not, but I think that it is suitable for those who already have a PC at home and want a fast internet device, and also beautiful in design, instead of buying a netbook, you buy an Iconia A200 which is always and certainly not ifregret it. I have not acquistrato this product but I’ve had thanks to a collection point. indeed, considering the price of purchase, I must honestly say that if I had to pay it would not have bought.
