How to ink in GIMP without a tablet

paint tool, is selectable at the bottom. You can choose from a circle, square, or diamond. In addition, you can alter the shape of the nib, by clicking on the gray square in the middle of the shape box and dragging it.

The speed slider above that indicates how much the speed of your drag effects the line. At speed 0 the line is one uniform size, at speed 1.0 the line begins with a smaller dot and thickens the slower you drag.

The tilt slider above that, I believe takes magnetic information from a tablet to determine which way your stylus is leaning. I cannot tell you how it works since I don’t use a tablet to ink.

The size slider, again, I believe uses information from a tablet to effect the size of the line based on pressure.  The angle slider, again, no clue, sorry. The size slider effects the size of your nib.

So what I will tell you is that the main things I adjust (in order of utility for me) are the nib, the nib shape, the size, and the speed. Another thing I use, which may or not be apparent to GIMP users, is that several of the tools, including the calligraphy tool are able to create straight lines. You merely need to select a point by clicking, which you can undo (Ctrl + Z) if you like. Hold shift and a line appears that you can drag to any point. When you click again GIMP draws a line to the new point with all the qualities of the line you indicated by your nib, nib shape, size, and speed.

Using this method I’ve been able to work-in different line weights, as well as keeping my strokes nice and clean looking. Its not as elegant as laying in strokes with a tablet, but it does give you some options to get similar effects without driving yourself crazy with a paintbrush and excessive strokes/brushes. Good luck and have fun!

Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 and Slider SL101 to ...

Asus have a lot of influence in the Android world, but unlike the majority of their mobile manufacturing rivals, not in the smartphone market. The company have taken it upon themselves to be the most notable Android tablet manufacturers around, using the knowledge derived from their netbook and notebook products to create their now highly successful tablet line, the original members of which are set to pick up the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 and the Asus Eee Pad Slider SL101, share similarly capable hardware. The oldest Android tablets in the Asus product family, both devices launched running Android 3.2 Honeycomb, the first dedicated tablet OS from Google. What’s more they both share the same 10.1-inch WXGA (1280×800) LED display, the same 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, the same 1.2 and 5-megapixel front and back cameras respective and are available in 16 and 32GB storage options.

Initially Asus Netherlands were too quick on the mark, denying any prospect of the latest version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean making its way to either tablet, both of which as of this year, currently run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s Asus Germany who are now stating otherwise however, as a comment made on the company’s local Facebook page, which was spotted by the team at PocketDroid, claims that there was never any comment made by Asus to refute claims of JB making it to the TF101 and SL101.

The true intent of the post may have been lost in translation, but in ‘Google English’ the post reads as such, “we need to deny this is clear. Colleagues from the Netherlands have made no statement about TF101/SL101, but merely confirmed that a Jelly Bean TF201/TF300/TF700 update be received. The converse, in that is not a TF101/SL101 JB update received are false and pure speculation. according to current knowledge, even users of older TF101/SL101 to benefit from a Android 4.1 update to come.”

We also spoke directly to Asus who refused to comment directly on talk of Jelly Bean for either device, but directed us to their track record with support for other products, which on the whole has been solid. if this is a hint, we’re taking it in the positive, that Jelly Bean will make it to both of the company’s original Android tabs, when exactly is another question altogether.

Asus Confirms Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update For ...

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was officially introduced mid-June 2012. The Google official that announced the new version of the OS said that the first wave of smartphones and tablets that will be update to Jelly Bean will be Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, Motorola Xoom and, of course, Nexus 7 – the tablet co-developed by Google and Asus, world’s first tablet to come pre-loaded with Android 4.1.

After HTC announced that HTC one S, one X and one XL will soon receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, now it’s time for ASUS to announce in an official statement that some of their tablets will soon receive the new firmware update.

The Taiwan-based tablet maker, Asus, announced today via a “letter” posted on their official Facebook account that the company’s products will be updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in the coming months. for the time being, only the company’s latest creations are on the list of devices that will receive the firmware update.

Over the coming months, the company will roll out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for  ASUS Transformer Pad 300, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime and ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity. The news will be warmly welcomed by the customers of the aforementioned tablets, while the owners of older Asus tablet models, Eee Pad Transformer and Eee Pad Slider, still wander whether the firmware update will be rolled out for their slates.

According to the Asus’ official press statement, the company haven’t decided yet whether Eee Pad Transformer and Eee Pad Slider, which were recently upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, will receive Jelly Bean. Asus said they are currently investigating the opportunity to roll out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean firmware for the two aforementioned tablets, but that, for the time being can’t guarantee whether they will receive the freshest Google source-code.

Anyway the good news is that there will be at least three more tablets, besides Nexus 7, that will receive 4.1 Jelly Bean. Asus made the announcement ahead of Samsung, the giant that has a multitude of tablets running on Android 3.2 Honeycomb or Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but haven’t announced the Jelly Bean upgrade yet.

Announced on July 9th, Android 4.1 brings a lot of new features. Project Butter seems to be the most anticipated one, bringing an optimized graphic processing software core, that comes with enhanced fluidity compared to the previous versions.

Intel Cove Point is a Windows 8 tablet/ultrabook ...

The Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Beijing has today thrown up a very interesting hybrid computing device, mixing the best parts of a Windows 8 tablet with the functionality of an Ivy Bridge ultrabook.

Called the Intel Cove Point (and previously known as the Letexo), the device bridges the gap between tablet and netbook, offering a keyboard and touchscreen smarts, with the two sliding together in a way not unlike the Asus Eee Slider.

When not using the keyboard, the touchscreen slides flush into the chassis, to be used as a chunky standard-looking slate.According to Wired, “At the demo, Cove Point also ran on an early sample of Intel’s upcoming Ivy Bridge CPU. just like you’d find in a full-fledged notebook, the device sports a 12.5-inch screen, two USB 3.0 ports and an HDMI port.”

As it stands, Cove Point remains a concept device, with no manufacturers stepping up to take on the Windows 8/ Ultrabook/ Ivy Bridge/ tablet hybrid challenge. but with the market for both ultrabooks and tablets, devices like this from a range of manufacturers is an eventual no-brainer.

Extending battery life on the ...

[ YouTube link for mobile viewing ]

The BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet is designed to give you a solid battery life depending on what you do, but there are some things you can do to help maximize the battery life of your tablet so you can stay connected, enjoy your media and capture amazing pictures and videos. We’ve compiled a number of tips to help you.

Dim the screen

A quick tip to help extend battery life is to adjust the screen brightness of the display to a lower value than the one you are currently using. to change your brightness setting, go to the Home screen status bar, tap on the Battery icon and toggle the brightness slider (in the yellow box below) to your desired value. Note, the system keeps separate brightness levels for whether you’re plugged in and charging or running on battery power only.

Tip: you can peek at the status bar without leaving the app you’re currently using. This is a great way to quickly check notifications, see the time, keep an eye on your battery power level, change the brightness level and more!

To show the status bar while using an app or game, swipe in from the top-left or top-right corner of the bezel onto the screen (1st image). After doing this you can access the settings menu by tapping on the gear icon that appears in the top right corner.

Turn off the screen automatically

Consider setting a short backlight time-out value that causes your tablet screen to turn off when left idle for a specific amount of time (5 minutes, for example). to review and change your backlight time-out value, complete the following steps.

1. From the Home screen, swipe down from the top bezel to access your tablet settings.2. Select “Screen”, then set your desired “Backlight Time-out” value from the drop down menu.

Enter standby mode automatically

In addition to the backlight time-out, you also have a standby time-out value, which will cause your tablet to enter standby mode automatically. to specify a standby time-out value, complete the following steps.

1. From the Home screen, swipe down from the top bezel to access your tablet settings.2. Select “Screen”, then set your desired “Standby Time-out” value from the drop down menu.

Enter and exit standby mode

As mentioned in the previous tip, setting a standby time-out value can help extend battery life. Here’s how to enter standby mode manually, as well as exit standby mode if you manually enabled it or if the standby time-out was triggered.

  • To enter standby mode, go to the Home screen, tap on the Battery icon that appears on the Status Bar, then tap “Standby”
  • To exit standby mode, swipe from bezel to bezel. for example, swiping from the left to right or from the top bezel to the bottom bezel will exit standby mode. you also have the option of pressing the power button to wake up the tablet

Turn off Wi-Fi®

Any time you are in an area without Wi-Fi access or traveling for an extended period of time without having a network connection, consider turning off your tablet’s Wi-Fi radio to help extend battery life. to do this, tap on the Wi-Fi icon that appears on your Home screen status bar followed by setting the switch to “Off”.

Turn off Bluetooth®

Keep in mind that in order to use BlackBerry Bridge apps, for example, you’ll need to leave Bluetooth turned on so that your smartphone and tablet can communicate with each other.

Airplane Mode

If you want to turn all the radios off simultaneously, set your tablet to Airplane Mode by going to the Home screen, tapping the gear icon, selecting Airplane Mode (from the list of settings on the left part of the display), and then setting the switch to “Off”.

Change Application Behavior

The next time you know you will be unable to charge your tablet for a while, consider pausing apps or games on your tablet whenever you show the Home screen or switch between apps. to view the application behavior settings on your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, complete the following steps.

1. From the Home screen, swipe down from the top bezel to access the tablet Settings.2. Select “General” and set “Application Behavior” to “Paused”.

Turn off your tablet

Not planning on using your tablet for a while? If so, turn it off instead of leaving it in standby mode. to shut off your tablet, tap on the battery icon that appears on the Home screen status bar followed by tapping on “Shut Down”.

Charging Tips

Charge your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet using the charger provided by Research In Motion® (RIM®) in the box that your tablet came in. a very important thing to keep in mind is that other charging solutions may not provide adequate power to charge your tablet. In the event you want a charger that is designed to charge your PlayBook at a quicker rate, check out shopblackberry.com where you can purchase a rapid charger such as the BlackBerry Rapid Charger or the BlackBerry Rapid Charging Pod.

Toshiba’s Portege M930 is almost like the Asus EEE Pad Slider, only with Intel Inside

If you liked the Asus EEE Pad Slider, but are a fan of Windows rather than Android, you’ll love the Portege M930. the tablet runs on an Intel platform with a fast dual core Core i5 ULV processor, has 4 GB of RAM and a 256 GB solid state drive – that’s much more powerful than the EEE Pad Slider, for sure. the slider mechanism is very similar to the one on the Asus, although the keyboard is better. the device is big and heavy though – it’s 1.1 inches thick and weighs 4.2 pounds – it definitely needs to lower those numbers to be successful.

Toshiba is also investigating the use of 21:9 format displays on mobile devices

Toshiba (again) is also trying to see whether a wider display format would be popular with the users, and the feedback has been positive so far. Their 21:9 format mockups look pretty unique, and while I don’t care for the super wide screen tablets, a long smartphone with a wide screen looks pretty appealing, especially when it can fit in my pocket and still be able to display full size Web pages (with a lot of vertical scrolling, but nonetheless).

Archos is quick to update the G9 tablets to quad cores and Ice Cream Sandwich

Archos is surprisingly quick to get into the quad core game, having announced that their 101 G9 and 80 G9 tablets will be receiving a small upgrade in the form of the Tegra 3 quad core processor and of course, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for software. the G9′s special feature is the huge storage capacity thanks to the use of actual hard drives, and with a quad core and ICS under the hood, the two models are worth a closer look.

ARM is helping startups bring better Augmented Reality to the real world

ARM is helping several startups optimize their AR apps to take full advantage of the CPU and GPU’s capabilities for a real time augmented reality experience. thanks to their know how, the companies have demonstrated a very quick overlay of information and pointers on the smartphone’s display, as well as a very nice 3D tracking without the need for markers – it looks like AR will become big in the coming months.

ASUS confirms Eee Pad Transformer and Slider ...

ASUS has quietly confirmed its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade schedule for the original Eee Pad Transformer and Eee Pad Slider, promising Android 4.0 will be pushed out as soon as possible after the January 12 Transformer Prime launch. the exact date of the upgrade is yet to be decided, but ASUS says it will be an OTA process rather than requiring the Eee Pad to be plugged into a computer to install it.

That’s good news for existing Transformer and Slider owners, who have been looking on enviously from the sidelines as Transformer Prime owners were reassured their shiny new slates would get Ice Cream Sandwich imminently. ASUS is also preparing a bootloader unlock tool for the Prime, though using it will void your warranty on the tablet.

“We’ll post an update on what changes it’ll make to your Eee Pads nex week,” ASUS’ support team has said, “and hopefully an ETA for the firmware update.” There’s also the possibility of some ICS-running Transformers at CES this coming week, so we’ll be keeping out eyes peeled.
