Hands-On: Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 – The ...

Samsung’s Galaxy Note tablet has been a rumor for a long time ever since news of the Galaxy Note hit the Internet. The company was on the right track by providing something that could use a digital pen as an input and people flocked to the part-smartphone, part-tablet. But this morning, after an accidental leak and a hint in their media invite, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 has become a reality.

Like Us on Facebook :

If you own a Galaxy Note, then you should already be familiar with how the Galaxy Note 10.1 will work. you can interact with the touchscreen one of two ways: poking at the screen like how Cavemen used to poke at their touchscreen devices or by using Galaxy’s “S Pen,” which conveniently is tucked away at the bottom right of the device. get used to this spot, lefties, as you won’t be getting a customized “Lefty Edition” of the Galaxy Note 10.1 anytime soon.

One of the first things I noticed when I saw the Galaxy Note 10.1 was its metallic bezel that surrounds the front of the device. The bezel not only houses its two slim speakers on the sides of the tablets, which is a departure from placing speakers at the bottom or just on one side like other tablets, but the right side is where the ‘S Pen’ is housed. it adds a touch of thickness to what the Samsung Galaxy Tab looks like, but if that means the speakers will be right in front of me instead of facing my lap, then it’s a welcome change.

The top of the Galaxy Note 10.1 has its power toggle, volume rocker, 3.5mm headphone jack, and for the first time in any tablet I’ve seen, an IR port that allows me to interact with my television since 95% of the time I’m on a tablet, I’m in front of a TV.

Other than those two points of interest, there’s not much different in terms of the Galaxy Note 10.1′s design and the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is a very good thing.

Using the ‘S Pen’ to navigate on the Note 10.1 becomes second nature once you have it in your hands. Popping out the ‘S Pen’ turns on the Note 10.1 and you’re ready to go. as soon as I started using the ‘S Pen’ to write, I was immediately impressed by how accurate my handwriting became compared to writing with my finger. It’s also extremely impressive for the Note 10.1 to know exactly how hard or light I’m pressing the ‘S Pen,’ which I’m sure graphic artists or anyone else who needs a wide range of impressions to be reflected in their work.

There are a number of unique tweaks to the Note 10.1 such as the ability to truly multitask instead of changing from one application to another or being able to play a video on your tab while doing something else in the background shows not only how forward thinking Samsung has become with the Note 10.1, but it also speaks to how powerful the device is with its 1.4GHz quad-core and 2GB of RAM.

The Note 10.1 feels much lighter than Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 as waving it as a $500 fan is now a possibility, which I know many of you were hoping would be the future of tablets.

One thing I’m concerned with is who the Galaxy Note 10.1 is exactly geared towards. if you consider the tablet market, I have a feeling people who are in the market for a tablet whose main input mechanism requires a digital pen might be a small one. What will help sell the Galaxy Note 10.1 over other tablets is just how strong it is in its performance and the unique tweaks Samsung has made to the Android OS as those are two areas the Galaxy Note 10.1 certainly stand out.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Review USA [Wi-fi]

This week we’ve got our hands on the final release version of the USA-bound Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, a device that’s got a 10.1-inch display and a love for S-Pen magic. this device runs Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and a brand new bit of TouchWiz over the top and has a pen like it’s smaller original Galaxy Note counterpart. this device also has front-facing speakers as well as a microSD card slot – and Samsung’s most powerful processor yet, the 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos!

Hardware

You’ve got a relatively large chassis surrounding a 10.1-inch WXGA 1280 x 800 TFT LCD display here, and it feels quite nice to handle. where Samsung very much took part in the “smallest and thinnest” race with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 originally, here they’ve dared to get a bit wider in order to bring us all the gloriousness of front-facing speakers.

Around the rim you’ve also got a high-quality silver plastic while the center of the device on the front is covered with a single pane of reinforced glass. this device also has a proximity sensor and a 1.9-megapixel camera up front as well for video chat. the top of the device contains a selection of lovely buttons and ports, starting with the headphone jack, then the IR-Blaster, microSD card port, volume up/down, and power/lock button.

The Infrared Blaster is for changing the channel on your television, of course, with Samsung’s deal with the Peel app leading the way. with the Samsung Exynos 1.4GHz quad-core processor under the hood here, you’ve got a collection of benchmarks that beat out essentially the rest of the Android world right this moment – stock builds, anyway.

• Antutu: 12245• CF-Bench: Native 24386, Java 6906, overall 13898• Quadrant Standard: CPU 13041, Memory 4469, I/O 5158, 2D 1000 2D, 3D 2459

Software

Samsung has learned from several devices of the past, the Galaxy Tab 10.1′s version of TouchWiz UX, Galaxy S III’s Ice Cream Sandwich TouchWiz, and Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich for tablets, and has combined the good parts into one new system. You’ll find yourself having an easy time getting used to this version of Android as you’ve basically used it before, several times, with different features on different devices.

You’ll jump in directly with the most awesome features that the Galaxy S III had – and has – with AllShare. with this sharing-centric app and set of abilities, you’ll be able to do great things like GroupShare. have a peek at how you’ll do presentations in the future.

It’s with this system you’ll be able to share all of your Samsung devices as one with the cloud-based SugarSync as well. Upload all of your photos and videos automatically for one big party! Then head down to your ability to multi-task in at least one way never before seen on an official build of Android!

The one you’ve probably never seen nor heard of before is Multiscreen. with this ability embedded into several standard applications like your Gallery and basic Email as well as more advanced apps like Polaris Office, you’ll be able to push files back and forth like a snap. not quite like what you’re able to do on a desktop machine white yet, but they’re getting there!

You’ll also see the Ice Cream Sandwich / TouchWiz version of recent apps, complete with a quick link to your task manager. Then of course there’s your TouchWiz UX-born set of Mini Apps, each of them able to sit above whatever else it is you’re doing at the time and do their specified task besides.

S-Pen

With your S-Pen you’ll be able to do everything the first Galaxy Note is able to and more – with Photoshop Touch you’ll be editing photos and creating your own works of art in no time, and with S-Note you’re going to be sketching at a generous size. the note-taking experience here feels rather well put together, especially if you’ve gotten used to taking notes on your original Galaxy Note – more space!

The Galaxy Note 10.1 comes with a set of replacement tips for your S-Pen for if you get too wild with it, too. the pen has been sized and shaped much closer to a tool not unlike a number 2 pencil. the size feels a bit more natural than the Galaxy Note’s original tiny S-Pen for sure.

Entertainment

You’ve got an HD display, a quad-core processor under the hood, and front-facing speakers that are quite impressive – what more do you want? Prop your Galaxy Note up with your official Samsung dock for extra excellence for watching videos and playing big time games. have a peek here at our quick tour through Netflix, Samsung Media Hub, and a video that’s housed on the device itself rather than streaming.

Note that the games are found in the Samsung Games Hub, an app which essentially lets you know which awesome games are out now and will be coming soon that work perfectly well with the Galaxy Note 10.1. Gameloft and Glu are on board, just to name a couple of heavy hitters. You’ll also find Samsung’s Music Hub – just launched recently here in the USA.

Camera

On the front of this device you’ve got a lovely 1.9 megapixel camera made for video chat and on the back there’s a 5 megapixel camera ready for fair photo and video action. have a peek at several examples of the highest quality photos and video this machine can muster and see if it suits you!

Battery

Here in the Android tablet universe, it’s actually a bit more difficult to find a slate with terrible battery life than it is to find someone with fabulous battery life. In this case, Samsung has made certain to keep their battery in check unless the device runs into a perfect storm, as illustrated here:

As you can see, this constantly-on and constantly-used (nearly) Galaxy Note 10.1 runs out of juice in about 6 hours. When used a moderate amount, you’ll certainly have more than a day’s life without issue. if you only use your tablet to take a note here and there as well as to check your email, you can expect several days of battery life.

Wrap-Up

Here in the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 we’ve got a rather unique experience, with the ability to create as well as consume on one 10.1-inch touchscreen display with a built-in pen to make it all happen. this device is clearly Samsung’s best effort yet, and with the power you get right along with the hardware that just feels nice to use, you’ve got a winner on your hands. You’ll be able to pick this device up from your local tablet-selling outlet immediately if not soon all across the United States.

Hands-on with the Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 $311 tablet ...

The Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 is an Android 4.0 tablet with a 1 GHz TI OMAP 4430 dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 9.7 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel display.

It’s available from Lenovo for $311.20, making it one the cheapest tablets from a company you’ve heard of that ships with Android 4.0 and Google Certification (which means you get the Google Play Store, Google Maps, Gmail, and other official Google apps).

I got a chance to check out the S2109 in person last night, and while it’s not the fastest tablet on the market, it’s got a few things going for it.

First, Lenovo has decked out the rear of the tablet with speakers, allowing you to get stereo sound pretty much no matter which way you’re holding the device.

Second, unlike some other relatively cheap tablets (I’m looking at you, Amazon Kindle Fire), the IdeaTab S2109 includes Bluetooth 3.0, a micro HDMI output, and a microSDHC card for expansion. It also has a front-facing 1.3MP camera.

Lenovo offers the S2109 with 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB of storage. Prices currently range from $311.20 to $383.20, although Lenovo’s running a sale right now. those prices could go up once the promotion ends.

On the other hand, if you don’t need the camera, Google Play Store, Bluetooth, or Android 4.0 software, the Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet and Amazon Kindle fire both have the same processors. those tablets also have 1024 x 600 pixel displays with a 16:10 aspect ratio.

The 4:3 screen on the IdeaTab S2109 is similar to the screen you’d find on the original iPad or iPad 2 and makes for a good web browsing or eBook reading experience. But many Android apps, especially games, are designed for widescreen displays and might not work as well on the S2109. Widescreen videos will also show black bars above and below the picture window on the tablet.

Weighing about 1.25 pounds, the tablet felt pretty good in my hands. and while it doesn’t have the Corning Gorilla Glass scratch-resistant displays found in pricier tablets, Lenovo says the screen is chemically treated to improve durability.

Lenovo also includes a free protective cover for the back and sides of the tablet, although it does not provide any screen protection. It’s made of a rubbery material and has a textured design on the back, making it easy to grip the tablet, even if you have sweaty hands after spending some time outside in the 96 degree weather… not that I had a chance to test that this week or anything.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S2109 is the first member of the Lenovo S2 tablet family to go on sale in the US. But the company expects to bring the S2 10 tablet with a 10 inch widescreen display and an optional keyboard docking station to market this fall. It’s already available in China.

Why we need to keep talking about women in tech

Update:May 15, 2012 in the wake of this article, Christiane Vejlo’s English-language account was posted on Reddit, and Dell has apologized on its Google+ page for hiring Mads Christensen to speak at its Copenhagen summit. “Dell sincerely apologizes for these comments,” they wrote, saying also, “[g]oing forward, we will be more careful selecting speakers at Dell events.”

Update:11:31 a.m. PT

a lot of women in tech, including me, don’t like to spend a lot of time talking about being a woman in tech. in fact, on a panel of female journalists I was recently on, one of them suggested that we don’t need to keep talking about the dearth of women in the tech industry, that it’s a problem that will solve itself or is well on the way to being solved.

Unfortunately, as I was recently reminded, that’s not true. There’s not only a persistent absence of women in the fastest-growing economic sector in the world, there are toxic and dangerous attitudes that make that sector persistently unwelcome for women.

One-minute Molly Rant: keep talking about women in tech

Last month, Dell held a summit in Copenhagen, Denmark. Michael Dell himself keynoted the event, whose crowd included some 800 Dell employees and partners, and one female journalist: Christiane Vejlo of the Danish gadget blog Elektronista.

Dell’s Danish arm hired, as emcee and entertainer for the day, a performer named Mads Christensen, who is a well-known provocateur in Danish media circles. according to Vejlo and a few English-language Danish blogs, he’s primarily known for making racist, sexist, and other inflammatory comments in public.

Translation of Mads Christensen’s comment: "There are almost no girls in this room, and I am happy."

(Credit:Christiane Vejlo)

He continued the streak that day. Vejlo live-tweeted the event and Christensen’s comments as they unfolded: for example, his opening line, roughly translated as, “There are almost no girls in this room, and I am happy. why are you here at all?” “Gender quotas are still fairly healthy in your industry,” he went on.

On innovation, the emcee who directly followed Michael Dell on-stagecommented that “All the great inventions are from men; we can thank women for the rolling pin.” and he ended his comments by saying IT was the last bastion for men, and that they should let the mantra “shut up, b–ch” hiss out from between their teeth. All to laughter and applause from that collection of some 800 IT professionals, overwhelmingly male. Dell’s Danish director, Nicolai Moresco, reportedly praised Christensen’s performance onstage as he thanked the emcee for his comments.

Translation of Mads Christensen’s comment: "All the good inventions are from men. we can thank women for the rolling pin."

(Credit:Christiane Vejlo )

Now, happily, the reporting of the incident caused a minor sensation — although one that was largely confined to Denmark. a few female bloggers picked up the story and Moresco apologized, after a fashion (he’s sorry you feel that way). last I heard, he still has his job, which is frankly unacceptable.

we contacted Dell for comment, and here’s what Kelly McGinnis, Dell’s vice president of global communications, had to say about the matter:

We can tell you that the moderator’s attempted humor does not reflect Dell’s values, or its strong record on and commitment to diversity and equal opportunity. Dell has been recognized for its diversity practices, including by Working Mother magazine, which has named Dell four consecutive years to its best 100 companies in the U.S. in addition, Dell’s Women Powering Business initiative strives to help women entrepreneurs and technologists expand their networks while offering capabilities to help them use technology to do more.

Christensen, meanwhile, clarified in the Danish press that he thought IT pros should be saying “shut up, b–ch” to their wives, not female co-workers.

First, imagine if something like that had happened in the U.S., at an event where the CEO of a major publicly traded company was the keynote speaker. Everyone involved would be either fired or frantically apologizing, and that should be happening now.

Second, Dell in particular ought to be extra sensitive to the topic, after intense criticism in 2009 for a Netbook marketing campaign that suggested women only want computers for shopping and calorie counting. that was the same year, by the way, that Dell paid almost $10 million to settle a gender discrimination lawsuit from its employees over equal pay.

Couple all of that with the fact that women run just 3.6 percent of Fortune 500 companies, and we think that’s a remarkable achievement. Facebook’s board of directors, quite famously at this point, includes exactly zero females, despite 58 percent of its users being women, and in spite of COO Sheryl Sandberg being possibly the strongest Silicon Valley advocate for gender equality (and going home to your kids at 5:30 p.m.).

And all of that is in spite of actual research suggesting that Fortune 500 companies benefit richly from having three or more women on their boards, in both financial and product development terms. yet even women who manage to get into tech, flee the industry in droves, and most of them say the hostile environment is the reason why.

As long as women continue to be underrepresented, they can continue to be abused and mocked in private. very few men in America would ever stand on a stage and say the kinds of things Christensen said in Denmark, but that doesn’t mean they don’t say them (or think them) in the board rooms of this country and others. keep talking about it, everyone — men and women. this discussion is far from over.

Editors’ note, 11:31 a.m. PT: this story was updated with comment from Dell.

Acer Iconia Tab A510 review

The A510‘s 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800-resolution TFT display can’t keep up with IPS panels, which offer superior viewing angles and brighter displays. That said, it doesn’t disappoint. The A510 is bright, and if you’re looking at it dead-on, color reproduction is accurate and satisfying. Viewing angles are relatively generous, though colors appear washed out and faded when you start looking on from an angle. at this point, I find myself back at the Transformer Prime — an extra $50 gets the Prime’s SuperIPS+ display, which is very bright and offers very wide viewing angles — a considerable step up over the A510.

The A510’s touchscreen is responsive, but keep a cleaning cloth handy: like most glossy displays, the A510 is prone to picking up fingerprints. like its predecessor, the A510 offers haptic feedback — the unit vibrates anemically as you type, or as a sort of faux-force feedback in games. I didn’t mind the effect, but it wasn’t very convincing. You can turn it off, but I honestly found it oddly alluring, a small plastic critter purring in my lap.

The pair of speakers are a mixed bag. They’re fairly loud, though not quite as loud as Apple’s iPad. They sound nice enough — a bit tinny if you crank the volume up too high, but bass reproduction is adequate. The audio is bolstered by Dolby Mobile audio enhancement, which makes a noticeable difference, provided you tweak the bass and treble levels.

Unfortunately, the speakers are tacked onto the tablet’s lower left and right corners, angled out towards the rear. If you’re holding the A510 in landscape mode, it’s incredibly easy to block and muffle the audio. I actually had the best luck holding the tablet upside down, piping the sound up into the air. it looks awkward if you’re a stickler about logos, but was a bit more satisfying over the long haul.

Toshiba Tablet AT200 review Toshiba Tablet AT100 review

Steve Jobs was once quoted as saying that 7in Android tablets were “dead on arrival”, lambasting them for being too small and saying a 10in screen is the minimum necessary on a tablet. Toshiba may have taken his advice, but has the company pushed the boundaries too far with the Excite 13?

Toshiba says the Excite 13 “delivers more screen real estate than any other tablet on the market.” While this is certainly true, this extra screen size comes at a huge cost of weight. The Excite 13 weighs almost 1 kilogram (997.9g to be exact), so it’s by far the heaviest Android tablet on the market. Thankfully, with a thickness of just 10.1mm the Excite 13 isn’t entirely a brick.

Interestingly, the Excite 13 comes bundled with a stand so Toshiba appears to be positioning this as a home device rather than one you’ll carry around with you everywhere. The company says the stand is ideal for propping the tablet on a table, kitchen benchtop or a coffee table. The tablet also comes with four speakers and boasts “exclusive sound enhancements by Toshiba and SRS Labs”, so its clearly being targeted as an entertainment device more than anything else.

The Excite’s 13.3in screen is an AutoBrite LED backlit display with a resolution of 1600×900. The extra screen real estate will no doubt be an advantage for watching movies and videos, but the display has a low pixel density of just 120ppi. in comparison, Apple’s new iPad has a ppi of 264, while the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime, arguably the best Android tablet on the market, has a ppi of 149. this means you will clearly see individual pixels on this screen and text isn’t likely to be as crisp as many other devices on the market.

The Toshiba Excite 13 comes with a micro USB port, a micro HDMI port and a full-size SD card slot. It charges via a proprietary dock connector and Toshiba says the battery will last for up to 13 hours with seven days of standby time. The tablet is powered by a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor with GeForce graphics, has 1GB of RAM and comes with 32 or 64GB of internal memory. The Excite 13 is a Wi-Fi only tablet with no 3G or 4G connectivity available.

The Toshiba Excite 13 comes with the latest version of Google’s Android platform, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The software appears to be a vanilla version of the OS, with no apparent UI overlay.

Toshiba hasn’t yet confirmed whether the Excite 13 will be released in Australia, but it will launch in the US in June and will cost US$649.99 for 32GB model and US$749.99 for the 64GB version.

Lenovo Launches IdeaTab S2109 With iPad 2-like ...

One more iPad Clone

Lenovo has launched a new tablet called the IdeaTab S2109 that looks a lot like the Apple iPad 2 (or the HP TouchPad or the Viewsonic Viewpad 9.7). like the aforementioned tablets, it comes with a 9.7-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio and an IPS panel with a 1,024 by 768 pixels resolution.

The tablet will run on a TI OMAP processor with a 1.3-megapixel front facing camera (nothing at the back), a microUSB port, microHDMI, microSD card slot, four speakers with SRS Trumedia compatibility, a battery that can last for up to 10 hours, a unibody chassis with a “gunmetal” finish and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Previous tablets from Lenovo used either Intel, Nvidia or TI processors; no details about pricing, availability, the amount of system memory or onboard storage have been revealed yet.

The tablet will offer both access to Google Play (Android Market) and Lenovo’s own app store. like other Android tablets from Lenovo, expect some useful apps to be bundled out of the box.

It will be interesting to see how Ice Cream Sandwich copes with the disparity of screen form factors on the market, ranging from 16:9, 16:10 and now 4:3.
