TrendForce: Surface’s Pricing Not Aggressive ...

TAIPEI, Taiwan–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Microsoft officially announced the price of Surface featuring the Windows RT operating system and a 10.6” display. The price meets the estimation calculated based on costs and profits, which is not particularly appealing in the market where the competition is fierce. It has limited support to lift Windows RT’s status among the tablets. TrendForce tends to be conservative toward Surface RT shipment with an estimation of 2.5 million unit shipment in 2012.

Although a price tag of $499 is located in the mainstream price range between 9.7” and 10.1” tablets but it shows no particular amazement, indicated by Eric Chiou, the research director of TrendForce. Compared to Apple’s iPad family, Surface’s price is the same as New iPad, but New iPad carries the resolution of QXGA(2048×1536), one whole grade higher than Surface RT’s WXGA(1366×768). When comparing their resolution density (PPI), Surface RT’s 148PPI lags far behind New iPad’s 264 PPI.

Compared to iPad2 , which is at the same resolution grade and priced at $399, Surface RT seems expensive with a $100 price gap. In view of the storage, Surface’s entry-level model carries 32G, double the 16G equipped in iPad entry-level model, but this could be the strategy in response to larger APP file size under Windows RT. It remains to see if consumers can benefit from the bigger storage.

Surface’s pricing strategy seems to show the compromise resulted from cooperation between Microsoft and several brands. The price gap between Surface and various tablets launched by PC brands is basically within $100. Although PC brands focus on smaller 10.1W WXGA tablets, PC brands still have chances to fight under the condition of similar prices and resolution, the room for survival is not completely squeezed by Microsoft’s in-house Surface tablet, Eric Chiou added.

According to TrendForce, three versions of Surface RT priced between $499 and $699 can be interpreted as Microsoft adopting a soft and modest attitude toward the penetration strategy in the tablet market. However the price basis not only has very limited replacement effect to Netbook averagely at $299, but also overlaps some Notebooks’ price range. Under the condition of featuring similar functions, it cannot avoid the situation that Microsoft operating system families fight against each other, leading to squeezed sales.

Pros and cons of ultrabooks

gamers, the Ultrabook will not be up to speed.

• Storage space – Ultrabooks are designed to work with solid state hard drives, but the storage capacity of these drives are notoriously small compared to a regular hard drive. Most Ultrabooks will only provide 128 GB of storage space. Because Ultrabooks are designed to be sealed units, you will not be able to replace the drive, meaning you will have to carry a portable hard drive, thus adding to the weight.

• Connectivity – Many things have to be sacrificed for the Ultrabooks ultrathin profile. You will not find a CD drive on an Ultrabook and things like HDMI or VGA connections will be a luxury.

• Sealed Units – Ultrabooks are designed to be sealed units, meaning that you cannot, for example, carry and swap out a spare battery pack. You won’t be able to tinker with its memory, and even if you do, the warranty if void. If the disk fails, you’ll have to bin the whole laptop.

Summary

Ultrabooks are a great option for the road warrior or the fashion conscious with no budget concerns. Performance-wise, it has more than enough power to satisfy the average user and battery life is comparable to that of a netbook. However, storage space and connectivity may be an issue, and make sure you know what you’re getting into with a sealed unit.

Archos 70 Internet Tablet 8GB review

The Archos 70 internet tablet is a middle of the road Honeycomb affair with a design that hardly sets our hearts alight. but, its tiny appearance and price is enticing.

Touted as the first Android Honeycomb tablet available under £180, the 70 internet tablet positions itself as a media device more than anything.

Its 7-inch size and solid battery life mean this could be just the right device for watching a movie during tedious bus journeys and lengthy airport delays.

The glossy, brushed-metal body is a magnet for fingerprints, but the built-in kickstand at the back is a winner. Pull it out and the device stands all by itself, allowing you to kick back and enjoy a video or album – why haven’t we seen this on other media tablets?

The 70 internet tablet’s higher resolution capacitive screen is a big selling point, stepping up the pixel count from 800 x 400 on the original Archos 70 to 1,024 x 600.

Just like Honey

Honeycomb is a step up from the Gingerbread OS that dominates sub-£200 tablets. Google designed this version specifically for tablets – and it shows. you get five home screens to fill with widgets and apps as well as the option to customise background, sounds and layout.

Although the 8GB of on-board storage limits the amount of media you can load onto the 70, there’s a built-in MicroSD card slot for bulking it up.

An ARM Cortex A8 processor running at 1.2GHz and supported by 512MB of RAM is nestled inside. these specs are enough to produce a reliable, if not lightning-fast, experience. There are hints of lag when moving between homescreens or opening applications but we never experienced a freeze.

Given the pocket-friendly size, connectivity is limited to a Mini-USB and Mini-HDMI ports, along with the aforementioned MicroSD card slot. On the wireless side of things you’ve got 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

At around half the price of tablets like the new iPad or Samsung Galaxy 10.1, performance is what we’d expect here – up to the basics, but not much beyond.

The 70 internet tablet’s Lithium Polymer battery stood up well to scrutiny, lasting the best part of a day during casual usage – browsing the web, tapping out the occasional email and playing music. When we looped some high-definition footage, the 70 internet tablet ran for 206 minutes before giving out. this isn’t a bad score and combined with the portability of the smaller size, makes it actually a very good option for regular commuters or travellers.

Given its size and price, the Archos 70 internet tablet could be a neat purchase for anyone regularly travelling or on a budget. but, thanks to performance foibles, we’d suggest this as a secondary device rather than a first choice machine.

Lenovo’s $300 IdeaPad Tablet Has 9-Inch ...

Lenovo is aiming squarely for the bargain bin with its $300 IdeaPad A2109 tablet, which despite the low price still has a 9-inch display and a speedy quad-core Tegra 3 processor.

The Lenovo IdeaPad A2109 is available now through best buy. Specs include a 1280-by-800 resolution display, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of built-in storage, a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and Micro HDMI output.

For software, the tablet runs Android 4.0. There’s no word on whether an update to Android 4.1, known as Jelly Bean, is in the cards.

Although we’re used to seeing cheap 7-inch tablets by now, it’s rare to see low-priced tablets with larger displays. at best buy, the closest competitors are a refurbished Motorola Xoom and an 8 GB Acer Iconia Tab A200, which both cost $330 and have 10.1 inch displays. Lenovo’s IdeaPad A2109 tablet is the only quad-core option, and the only one that runs Android 4.0, though its screen is a bit smaller.

Still, it’s no surprise that Lenovo has cut a few corners to get its price so low. There’s no MicroSD card slot on board, so 16 GB is all you get, and the multitouch display only supports four fingers at once. the design’s also a bit chunky by today’s standards, measuring a half-inch thick.

We may see some more activity in the big-screen tablet space soon, with Amazon expected to announce a larger Kindle fire tablet next week. but unlike the Kindle fire, Lenovo’s tablet runs a proper version of Android, and has full access to the Google Play Store and other Google apps. I haven’t seen this tablet up close yet, but it could be worth keeping in mind as an alternative once Amazon announces its new gadgets.

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra-M5-581TG launched in UK

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra-M5-581TG (Model:73516G52Mass) is a laptop halfway between the ultra-portable 15-inch and “traditional”. It differs from others by its finesse but also by its autonomy. The Timeline Ultra M5 has indeed autonomy that can approach seven hours using basic or three hours when higher demand. Good point, the battery maintains its performance over approximately 1000 charge cycles.

Side configuration, the Timeline Ultra-M5-581TG 73516G52Mass features an Intel Core i7 next generation. This is a low energy model, but a little less swift performance perfectly suited to everyday use. Of course, it is possible to perform more demanding tasks like video editing, it will just be a little more patient with respect to an Intel Core i “classic”. Little more for fans of multitasking, this notebook is equipped with 6 GB of RAM.

The graphics has not been forgotten with the presence of a GeForce GT 640M LE (light version of the Geforce GT 640M). The latter may be suitable for casual players, ready to make some concessions on the graphics settings with the securities most resource intensive 3D. Note the presence of Optimus technology that automatically switches between the chipset and graphics card dedicated to better manage energy consumption and autonomy.

Storage is entrusted to a hybrid system with a side of a 20 GB SSD to improve responsiveness and the other, a 500 GB hard drive for storage.

The rest of the configuration is more common with such a glossy panel with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels (probably the main weakness of these Timeline Ultra M5). Bluetooth 4.0 is a chip of the game. Note also

Finally, some users will appreciate its simple design but also its backlit chiclet keyboard.

Now, Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra-M5-581TG is available to order in UK at Amazon.co.uk

Archos 97 Carbon tablet with Android 4.0 is now up ...

Archos seems to have realized that there is a huge group of people that want affordable tablets that look good and work well. this is how the Archos 97 Carbon seems to have been born. It’s a 10-inch tablet, so it’s not really a competitor to the Nexus 7. it has the same aspect ratio as the iPad (4:3), same resolution as the iPad 2, 1024×768, it runs Android 4.0, and it costs only $250.

Not everything about it is perfect, though. The processor is only a single-core 1 GHz CPU, which means browsing performance and overall performance will not be the best, although it shouldn’t be terrible either. I expect the interface to work well with Android 4.0, and if they upgrade it to Android 4.1 it should work even better.

The Archos 97 Carbon also has 16 GB of storage and 1 GB of RAM, so it matches the similarly priced Nexus 7. MicroSD support is there as well, so that’s another advantage it has over the Nexus 7. There’s no mention of what type of GPU the Archos has, but they claim it decodes 1080p video, so you shouldn’t experience any problems when watching media.

It also comes with a HDMI-out port and a full USB port, which once again increases the connectivity options over the Nexus 7. There are two cameras as well, and, although I wouldn’t expect high quality, they should get the job done.

Archos is currently running a deal giving a $20 discount to the buyers of the Elements series tablets, which includes the Archos 97 Carbon tablet, so if you hurry, you might be ale to get it for only $230.

Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition Could Hurt Nexus ...

Since Samsung is gearing their tab toward students it might be a better deal.the Nexus devices does not support WPA/WPA2 Enterprise WiFi (I contacted Google support), used in many colleges, universities & schools.you could add a 32GB SDHC to a Samsung Tab for $20 or less, so storage is not an issue.I have both devices and the both perform very good, most people will not see the deference in performance. Google support conversation: (for real and the person did not have a accent)me: hi, I am not able to connect to WPA/WPA2 Enterprise WiFi networks.Google: are you able to connect at McDonald’s? because if you do the problem is not with the Nexus device.me: I have not been around a McDonald’s since I got the device. I usually do not frequent that place.Google: is the device connecting to your home WiFi?me: Yes. Google: the device works and the problem is with your enterprise network.me: I have tried several devices (Samsung Nexus phone, Samsung Tab, Asus Transformer, etc) and they all connect, so the network is working just fine.We went back and forth and he put me on hold…came back after a minute.Google: Sorry for putting you on hold but I was told that the Asus Nexus 7 does not support WPA/WPA2 Enterprise WiFi.me: Thanks…Have a nice day.

Dell Streak 7 Tablet Is The Woot Deal Of The Day

The Woot deal of the day is one that anyone looking for a low priced Android tablet may be interested in. the tablet is of the 7-inch variety, more specifically, the tablet is the Dell Streak 7. And sure, we suspect this is far from everyones favorite tablet, however Woot has this available in a Wi-Fi only as well as a T-Mobile connected model.

And even nicer, the price is pretty low. the Wi-Fi only model is selling for $149.99 and the Wi-Fi + 3G model is selling for $199.99. of course, as we always see with Woot, you will need to add in an additional $5 for shipping.

Otherwise, we should point out that these are refurbished models. in terms of the features, the Streak 7 has a 7-inch (800 x 480) touchscreen display along with a dual-core 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 16GB of storage, a memory card slot, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, GPS, a 2780 mAh battery, front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera and a rear-facing 5 megapixel camera with flash.

In terms of Android, the Streak 7 is running 3.2 Honeycomb and we are fairly certain that it will never see Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. well, not officially anyway. as far as the T-Mobile connected model goes, that will run on the HSPA+ network which will mean an extra monthly expense, however given these are coming from Woot — that will be a month-to-month agreement with T-Mobile.

Bottom line here, while we would normally have a hard time suggesting the Dell Streak 7 to anyone at this point in time — it is sort of tempting when you are looking at prices of $199.99 or $149.99. Heck, the Wi-Fi only model for $149.99 would make for a rather nice Android running ereader if you were looking for something along those lines and wanted to avoid the NOOK or Kindle Fire. all said and done, this is a purchase we could most likely be happy with.

High Resolution on an Android Tablet: Acer Iconia ...

Up until now, Android tablets have been stuck with relatively low screen resolutions. Most are 1024×768, and at best you see tablets with 1280×800 resolution. with resolutions such as these, pixels are big enough to where you can see individual pixels if you look closely. the new iPad showed us what happens when you shrink the size of each pixel (and add more of them): the results are transformative as content can look printed-on the display.

Acer is first out of the gate to launch an Android 4.0 tablet with a higher screen resolution. the Acer Iconia A700 packs 1920×1200 pixels, granting it a DPI of 224, which is not a far cry from the iPad’s 2048×1536 263 DPI display. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, which has a mere 149 DPI display, you can understand why we’re excited by what Acer has brought to the table.

Not only that, the A700 has plenty of power with a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU with 1GB of RAM, plus 32GB of storage.

Right now you can get an A700 for around $500 direct from Acer. Only a WiFi version is available at this time. More coming soon on the Iconia Tab A700!
