Toshiba pulls out of Windows RT tablet push • ...

Toshiba today backtracked on its decision to produce Windows RT tablets. it blamed the move on a delay in receiving key components.

The manufacturer had previously announced its intent to make Surface-style slates with ARM-derived processors from Texas Instruments. However, after struggling to obtain certain parts, which it did not name, Toshiba has turned its back on Windows RT for now.

Pique that Microsoft is to release its own tablets in direct competition with vendors like Toshiba? not a bit of it, the Japanese manufacturer insisted.

“Toshiba has decided not to introduce Windows RT models due to delayed components that would make a timely launch impossible,” admitted company spokesman Eric Paulsen in an statement.

“For the time being, Toshiba will focus on bringing Windows 8 products to market. We will continue to look into the possibility of Windows RT products in the future while monitoring market conditions,” he added.

Toshiba’s decision could be seen as a blow to Microsoft’s tablet domination plans. this week several other manufacturers came forth to show support for the Windows-on-ARM platform. Toshiba was notable for its absence. So was HP, but it has said in the recent past that it isn’t interested in Windows 8 RT, only the x86 version.

Dell, Lenovo and Samsung joined Asus on the list of third-party hardware producers with Windows RT tablets in the works, despite discontent among some of Microsoft’s other PC makers over its decision to furnish own-brand fondleslabs. ®

Enjoy running Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich on your Toshiba Thrive 10 inch tablet!  Hopefully, we will see the same update drop for the 7 inch model soon.

10-inch Toshiba Thrive gets OTA Android 4.0 ...

Now that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has been launched, it surely is nice to see more and more tech manufacturers rolling out… ICS updates to their gadgets. Wait, what?

Yes, guys, I’m afraid that, as much as we’d like to see JB upgrades flowing in, there are still a whole lot of devices which have been left out of the Android 4.0 mix and they absolutely have to get that software leap before moving forward.

The latest such gadget, which was supposed to get the Ice Cream Sandwich treatment months ago, is Toshiba’s 10-inch Thrive tablet. the tab is currently being upgraded to ICS over-the-air, according to official statements on Toshiba’s forums, which should be great news for anyone that has been patient until now and has held on to the 10-incher.

While the update has come much later than Toshiba initially anticipated, we have to give credit where credit is due. the Thrive makers announced back in June that the tab was then planned to step it up “sometime in the fall”, and it’s surely nice to welcome the upgrade much earlier than that.

Unfortunately, the Thrive’s 7-inch “sibling” is still stuck on Honeycomb and might have to wait at least a few more weeks before getting the ICS treatment. There’s no official word as to when to expect the update to start rolling out to the 7-incher, however, so it might happen tomorrow, or, God forbid, it might never happen.

Getting back to the 10-incher’s update, it should have been made available worldwide and you should have already gotten an automatic prompt message to download and install the new and exciting software package. if for some reason you haven’t gotten the prompt just yet, you might want to reboot your tablet a couple times, check for a better Internet connection, or locate the “Service Station” icon in your “apps” menu and manually check for updates.

Aside from the usual UI tweaks, improvements and added features of any ICS update, the Thrive’s new OS should bring to the table “improved video and audio performance”, “improved camera functions” and “improved signal strength and connectivity”, according to the changelog’s highlightsposted on Toshiba’s forum. that sounds a bit too generic for us, so if you’ve gotten the OTA update, please let us know of the specific changes and improvements you’ve noticed on your Thrive.

As you might imagine, it’s way too early to talk about a possible Jelly Bean update for Toshiba’s Thrive, but it surely isn’t too early to start hoping. do you guys think the tab will ever be getting the leap to Android 4.1? Or is ICS enough for a one-year-old gadget with Thrive’s spec sheet?

Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich now available for ...

Toshiba has finally pushed Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich to the 10-inch Thrive. Originally slated for spring, the update was later delayed twice, but has now fallen earlier than the most recent estimated fall release. aside from the usual changes when moving on from Android Honeycomb, Toshiba has specifically pointed out improvements to video and audio performance, camera functions, and signal strength and connectivity. no announcements have been made regarding the 7-inch version, so owners of the smaller Thrive will have to stick with Honeycomb a bit longer.

Android 4.0 update for Toshiba Thrive tablets pushed back to fall

The Ice Cream Sandwich update for Toshiba’s 10-inch and 7-inch Thrive tablets has been pushed back yet again. Originally planned to roll in out in the spring, then later delayed to the summer, Android 4.0 is now scheduled to be available early this fall. While Toshiba’s new Excite tablets are shipping with Android 4.0 already installed, it’s unclear why the company has been slow to extend the updates to its older product line.

The Consumerist » Toshiba Thrive Tablet ...

Alex writes that his five-month-old Toshiba Thrive tablet cracked, sort of under its own weight. Is that possible? maybe. stranger things have happened to electronics. But everyone he’s talked to at Toshiba doesn’t think so, and they’re acting like it was accidental damage.

I bought the Toshiba Thrive on 11/2011 and the screen cracked on04/2012 while I was holding the thing. I attached a picture of thecracked thrive and how I was holding it when it cracked. I didn’t dropthe thing and never tinkered with it. This tablet literally cracked inmy hand while I was about to put it down.

I called customer support and to now ones surprise they said theycouldn’t do anything. I spoke to a guy named “E” who was kind ofsnarky with me which I didn’t appreciate. I asked him if there wassomeone else I could talk to. he replied, “I could transfer you butthat person is just going to tell you they can’t do anything either”.

I called support and they told me they couldn’t do anything about it.I am pretty upset at this point and don’t know what to do. I thoughtyou guys would appreciate knowing this about the product.

That’s a scary thought. here are some places for Alex, and anyone else experiencing tech support stonewalling to get started:

  • Call back at a different time of day and try to get another representative. It’s amazing what a difference that can make.
  • Check with your credit card company to see if they have added warranty coverage. Assuming that you paid for the item with a credit card, that is.

Samsung plans Windows RT tablet for October ...

Samsung may release a Windows RT (Windows 8) tablet later this year, according to a new rumor.

Samsung may be planning to compete with Microsoft’s Surface tablet this fall. Bloomberg reports that Samsung is developing a Windows RT tablet with a planned release date of October. this makes it one of only a few manufacturers willing to give the new version of Windows a try in the exclusive tablet format.

As it stands, it looks like traditional PC makers like Dell and HP are holding off on Windows RT tablets this year. Samsung may not have a ton of competition, though Toshiba, Acer, Asus, and Lenovo may jump into the game. We should find out in the coming months.

But wait, what is Windows RT?

Basically, it comes down to processors. almost all PCs (computers, laptops, Macs, and servers) run on processors based on Intel’s designs, but almost all phones, smartphones, tablets, and other portable gadgets run on processors based on ARM designs. ARM took a foothold in the handheld electronics business due to its chip designs requiring less power and producing less heat. Manufacturers also like ARM because they can modify its chip designs and make their own flavors — something Intel does not allow.

Windows RT is essentially a version of Windows 8 that runs on ARM processors. this puts Microsoft in direct competition with Android and iOS, but it also means that all desktop applications (software for all older versions of Windows) won’t run on Windows RT machines. this has led Microsoft to split off Windows RT from its Windows 8 line and was likely one of the main reasons why Microsoft itself is creating a tablet.

Microsoft is hedging its bets, so is Samsung

In almost every way, Microsoft is hedging its bets on the future of the PC and mobile industries. It knows that touch-based operating systems like Android and iOS are gaining significant ground, but it also knows that many people may cling to their full-featured laptops and PCs, which currently are a lot better for gaming and more complicated tasks than tablets and other ARM-based devices. Samsung is also hedging its bets. the manufacturer has been quick to jump on almost every platform, including Windows Phones, Android phones, Android tablets, and even Tizen, an OS that it’s building with Intel.
