Windows 8 Release Preview is Here, Try it ...

After the Windows 8 in Consumer Preview version, Microsoft has published Windows 8 Release Preview version of new Windows operating system, which will present you how should final version of Windows 8 look like. also, this is not a great news for the tablet PC owners, because you can not install this version on tablets, but you can at least install it on your desktop PC or notebook to see functions of new Windows 8 which will be running on most tablets in 2013.

In comparison to the  Consumer Preview, Microsoft Windows 8 Release Preview brings many improvements and a lot of good applications for the Metro UI, like Bing Travel, NEWS, Sports, Gaming and Music Xbox apps and new Mail application with many improvements and fixes. also, internet explorer 10 is improved and now there is a support for the Adobe flash player. We still think that windows with Metro UI is not good as Windows 7 (on the desktop computers, notebooks…), but for tablets will be the best OS on the market.

Also, if you are Windows fan and your PC is running on the Windows 7, after publishing the final version of Win8 Microsoft will give you a chance to update your Windows 7 to new Windows 8 OS for just $14.99, but if you do that until January 31th 2013. If you are interested in trying Windows 8 Release Preview you can download it here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/iso and try it for free.

New “Awesome” Firmware Update For Asus ...

Remember the new incoming firmware update for the Asus Transformer Prime that was going to bring “awesome” new features to the tablet? Well, Asus has started rolling out the new software update for Prime owners to enjoy.

The new update (v9.4.2.21) brings includes changes like the ability to access the notification bar from the lock screen, an updated version of Asus Vibe with a new UI and more content, the ability to update the camera firmware independently, the ability to select portrait or landscape mode while viewing content over HDMI via the Prime.

One of the most important and requested features by Prime owners is the support for Ad-hoc Wi-Fi networks. Post this update; Prime owners can also connect their tablet to the Internet by using the Ethernet cable. You need the USB to Ethernet to plug-in the Ethernet cable though. other than this, the update also includes the new re-branded Google apps, including the Google Play Music, Play Store, Play Books and Play Movies.

While the update does bring some nice new features, none of them are really “awesome” enough. Nevertheless, kudos to Asus for continuously pushing software updates to the Transformer Prime.

Installing Windows 8 on A Touch-Screen PC

How well does Windows 8 Consumer Preview run on a touch-screen Windows 7 PC? is it a better experience, now that you can touch the Metro interface? We installed Windows 8 on a touch-screen PC to find out.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview is the popular download of the month, and we decided to try out its vaunted touch interface. As stated before, Windows 8′s Metro UI is optimized for a touch interface, similar to the UI built into Windows Phone 7. It “worked,” but only with a clean install, rather than upgrading from Windows 7. Needless to say, we recommend that you wait for a few more revisions before replacing Windows 7 on your primary touch-screen PC.

Setup and Problems We hoped that setting up Windows 8 on a touch-screen PC would be simple, but it turned out to be anything but. Previous hands-on accounts, such as Brian Westover’s look at running Windows 8 on a MacBook Air, were “clean” installs to a blank partition on the hard drive/SSD. For the touch-screen preview, we wanted to use a system with preloaded apps, Windows 7 Home Premium, and as many toys as we could try out. To that end, we picked two systems: the HP TouchSmart 620 3D and the Lenovo Ideacentre B320. We picked these two systems because they had TV tuners, discrete graphics, Blu-ray drive (on the HP 620 3D), active shutter 3D glasses (TouchSmart again), and both are media-oriented. We essentially wanted to have the big tablet experience and see if the single-tasking, touch-screen interface was effective on a desktop PC.

When we tried to run the Windows 8 setup utility from Windows 7, it asked if we wanted to install Windows 8 while keeping “Windows settings, personal files, and apps,” just the personal files, or nothing (from scratch). We chose the first choice and if it worked, it would have meant that we could use all the systems’ preloaded programs, like PowerDVD to view movies. Things seemed to be fine; the setup utility checked the preloaded programs to verify they would work with Windows 8, and we uninstalled the one or two programs that were known not to work.

Unfortunately, each time we tried to upgrade either of the two Windows 7 systems to Windows 8, we ran into a snag. the systems would get hung up on one of the screens where the installer was preparing or loading device drivers. It happened so often, we’ve started calling the illustration of the Betta fish you see on loading screens as the “failfish,” like the Fail Whale on twitter.com. We eventually gave up installing Windows 8 on the HP TouchSmart 620 3D, and motored on with the Lenovo B320. Thankfully, the Windows 8 setup utility is able to bring users back to the state the system was in when the upgrade process started. that said, we still recommend that you create recovery discs or a USB stick just in case things don’t work out.

We were able to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview on the Lenovo B320, albeit as a clean install, after completely erasing the hard drive. Once you start from scratch, the setup process takes about 15-20 minutes, as long as everything works out all right. Once loaded, the system brought up the main Metro screen, and we could continue with our hands-on.

Sometimes When We Touch Anyone who suspects that Microsoft releases products in order to get end users to beta-test them will have a lot of conspiracy fodder. (Though Microsoft itself touts this fact on its website, claiming that 8 million beta testers evaluated Windows 7 before its release in 2009). the Lenovo B320 we used to test Windows 8 is has an Intel Core i5-2500S processor, AMD Radeon HD 6450 graphics, a 21.5-inch (1,920-by-1,080 resolution) multitouch screen, and 8GB of memory, so it’s well over the minimum requirements for Windows 8.

Related StoryCheck out our complete Windows 8 coverage.

Startup was quick: under 20 seconds from power off to the Metro screen. this isn’t all that surprising, since the system essentially has nothing on it but the OS and a few preloaded apps. Navigating the Metro screen made it clear that this is beta software. Clicking on tiles with your finger isn’t quite as responsive as it should be. Short taps that would otherwise open an app on a tablet like an iPad did not return a response. Pressing on a tile for too long sometimes only made the individual tile tilt, which visually looks as if you were pressing on a ceramic tile resting on a mushy surface. Eventually your muscles will learn how much pressure to use, for what length of time, and to avoid dragging your finger during the tap, but it’s still quite a period of time before your fingers and the touch screen are in sync. Normal touch-screen gestures like pulling down for toolbars, Pinch and zoom, and swiping from screen to screen worked. Eventually, however, you’ll learn the new gestures, like pinching the screen to show more of the Metro interface, swiping the right edge of the screen to bring up the Search/Start toolbar, and swiping up from the lock screen to unlock the system. It all “works,” yet feels kludgy since the performance and click sensitivity isn’t optimal yet.

Speaking of kludgy, focusing your attention on a single touch-based app, full-screen, works fine on tablets and while playing casual games like cut the Rope, but it’s annoying if you’re trying to use the system as a desktop PC. the simple act of browsing several websites simultaneously and copying and pasting info among different screens takes more steps than necessary. To access the tabs toolbar, you need to drag down the top edge of the screen, which is frustratingly slow compared to clicking a horizontal row of tabs as on other browsers. Granted, you can put the system into desktop mode and use a regular browser like Google Chrome, but that’s not optimal for touch.

Dragging toolbars from the screen edges was a chore; bringing your fingers to the inner edge of an indented screen feels decidedly non-tablet-like. the bezel on the Lenovo B320 (and HP TouchSmart 620) is raised, so you can’t simply drag you finger from the edge of the bezel to the screen surface: there’s a step “down.” the experience should improve once more touch-screen PCs have edge-to-edge seamless screens. other ergonomic nits include the vertical tilt of the screen. after a while it becomes more comfortable to use the keyboard and mouse, since the vertical touch surface forces you to stick your arm straight out for extended periods of time. Unless you’re a traffic cop, holding your arm out straight becomes tiring quickly. the extreme tilt of the HP TouchSmart would’ve been a help to ergonomics, making the experience more tablet-like.

So is Windows 8 Consumer Preview a good start? yes, if you’re willing to wipe out the system. Installing Windows 8 on a touch-screen system is an interesting exercise and will be a good experience if you’re familiarizing yourself with Windows 8 or planning on developing apps for the Windows 8 platform. Otherwise, you definitely don’t want to compromise your primary system by installing Windows 8 over Windows 7. It’s better to experiment with a system you won’t mind erasing and rebuilding in a few weeks. In any case, make sure you have a good restore or backup method available for when things go wrong (and they likely will).

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) unveiled; definitely ...

Samsung on Sunday unveiled the Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and it’s definitely not the high-definition tablet we’ve been waiting for ever since BGR revealed the device in December. The new 10-inch tablet leaked last night and now the underwhelming details are official. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) features a 1GHz dual-core processor, a WXGA 1,280 x 800-pixel PLS TFT display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera, a front-facing VGA camera (a downgrade from the original Galaxy Tab 10.1′s 2-megapixel secondary camera), 16GB or 32GB of internal storage and a 7,000 mAh battery. in summation it’s a Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Ice Cream Sandwich and a slightly modified case. No launch details were provided. Samsung’s press release detailing the sort-of-new tablet alongside the Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) follows below, but don’t despair — the Galaxy Note 10.1 is still incoming and we have a feeling this will be the HD slate we’ve been waiting for.

Dell Streak finally gets Gingerbread update

Dell Streak 5 owners who couldn’t wait for Gingerbread have been rooting to get it for quite a while, but now Dell has officially released Android 2.3.3 for the oversized phone. it includes the company’s UI skin Stage 1.5.1 and Swype 2.27, but only supports English and Korean languages — xda-developers forum members are working on a full changelog.

If you’ve been customizing your software, you’ll have to revert to stock recovery version 350, but those of you still on stock Froyo can just download the package, rename it “update.pkg,” enter recovery mode, and follow the on-screen instructions. with a wave of Android 4.0 updates on the way, it might seem like Gingerbread is a bit outdated, but it’s hard to complain about an update for a discontinued product.

Samsung releases official video for Wifi Galaxy ...

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Samsung released their official promotional video for the Galaxy 10.1 today with several Touchwiz elements in tow, notably several widgets and icon skins.  but this is what we expected would happen.

Remember, even though the Tab shipping now is stock honeycomb, Samsung plans on shipping future devices with their Touchwiz UI, as well as offering it to existing customers via an optional over the air download at a future date. Since this is a promotional video for the "final" product, featuring Touchwiz made the most sense because it meant they only had to make one film instead of two.  In fact, the description from the video’s YouTube page says as much:

The official info clip for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi. The tab used in this video is 3G version and may differ from the Galaxy Tab 10.1 sold in the U.S., and some of the features and services highlighted in the video will be available through software upgrade in the U.S.

We’ve received no word from Samsung that Touchwiz was being pushed out to tablets yet, and devices purchased in NYC last week are still running the stock honeycomb they were shipped with.

Be sure to keep an eye on our forums as Android Central readers nationwide pick up their pre-orders and start posting feedback.  In the meantime, crank your speakers to 11 and enjoy the video.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime vs Samsung Galaxy ...

Published on Dec 20, 2011

Asus’ Eee Pad Transformer Prime has been getting a lot of attention in the run-up to its new year release and it’s easy to see why. The device is powerful, pretty and jam-packed with top-tier features.

So we’ve decided to see just how good this new tablet is by sticking it in the ring with the fantastic Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 – a device that’s no stranger to plaudits of its own.

Software

Both of today’s contenders are powered by Google’s tablet-centric Android Honeycomb, with the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime on version 3.2 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on 3.0.

The software is fast, stable and very user friendly, as well as featuring overhauled core applications and a tweaked UI that’s designed specifically for use on tablets.

There are tons of apps available for the OS too via the Android Market, but not many are optimised purely for tablets, which is something of a disappointment.

Nonetheless the overall Google experience is pleasingly evident in both devices.

Camera

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 features a 3.15-megapixel primary camera with autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging and 720P video capture, which performs fairly well considering the low pixel count.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 also benefits from a 2-megapixel front-facing secondary camera for video calling and taking the odd self-portrait and it also performs surprisingly well.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime boasts a top quality 8-megapixel camera with LED flash, autofocus, geo-tagging and full 1080P video capture, as well as a 1.2-megapixel front-facing snapper for video calling.

Both cameras on the Asus perform exceptionally well and we can happily state that the primary shooter on the device is the best tablet camera we’ve used to date.

Winner – Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Form & Build

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime – ?, ?, 8.3mm, 586gSamsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 – 256.7 x 175.3 x 8.6 mm, 560g

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime is a good looking device that bears a striking resemblance to other top-tier tablets on the market.

It’s slim, minimalist and relatively light at 586g, so you won’t have to worry too much about arm ache if you’re lugging one around for most of the day.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is another well designed device that follows the design trends set out by Apple with the iPad.

The device is built primarily with plastics and as such is light. but it doesn’t quite have the same premium feel of the Asus, which is the only negative that we can think of.

Winner – Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Display

Asus’ Eee Pad Transformer Prime boasts a 10.1-inch Super IPS+ LCD touchscreen which operates at  a resolution of 1280 x 800 and has a pixel density of 149PPI.

The screen is robust thanks to a liberal scattering of Corning’s Gorilla Glass and is both responsive and vivid. Viewing angles are pleasing too, which is something that can make or break such a big-screened mobile device.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 features a 10.1-inch PLS TFT touchscreen which operates at a resoution of 800 x 12800 and has a pixel density of 149PPI, exactly the same as the Transformer Prime.

The similarities don’t end there. The Galaxy Tab 10.1′s screen is equally as responsive and durable owing to the self-same Gorilla Glass coating, but seems brighter than the Asus, with deep blacks and vivid colours lending a really pleasing quality to the screen.

Winner – Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Acer Iconia A200 tablet launched: Dual-core tab is ...

Acer’s Iconia A200 tablet marks the second coming from Acer in terms of Android Honeycomb tablets. Confusingly, the A200 is the sequel to the Iconia A500, which we rated in May with a middling score. Have the specs improved for the A200?

On paper… kind of. The Acer Iconia A200 is a dual-core tab with a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset. this is enough to make it pacy, but it’s bound to be outstripped by quad-core tablets coming out in the first half of 2012.

Do we actually need quad-core mobile devices?

Other specs are decent enough: a 2-Megapixel front-facing camera, 8 or 16GB of storage that’s expandable by microSD, but it still looks pretty chunky. The size of the A500 was the biggest problem we had in our Acer Iconia A500 review, and while the design in the A200 looks like an improvement, it still doesn’t exactly look slight.

The use of Android 3.2 is neither here nor there; Acer says it’ll upgrade the Iconia A200 with Ice Cream Sandwich soon, but either way the OS is overlaid with Acer’s Ring UI, which pops up a circle of options whenever you hold down on an area of the screen.

Price and exact release date for each country haven’t been announced, but we’d estimate that it’ll cost roughly the same as the £449.99 Iconia A500 before it. Check out the video below for a look at the Ace Iconia A200’s features. with horrible music.
