Apple vs. Samsung: inside a ...

Question 5: iPhone design patent infringement. The first design patent is Apple’s D618,677 patent, which covers very specific elements of the iPhone’s design: the speaker slot, clean front, edge-to-edge glass, and display border. looking at the drawing, remember that only the solid lines count — the dashed lines are there for context. 13 Samsung devices are accused of infringing this patent, including the Galaxy S II line, the Infuse 4G, and the Verizon Fascinate.

Question 6: iPhone design patent infringement. The next design patent is Apple’s D593,087 patent, which covers the home button, clean front, rounded corners, and uniform bezel of the first three iPhone models. It’s basically what’s left from the D’677 patent. eight Samsung devices are accused here, including the Galaxy S II line, the T-Mobile Vibrant, and the Infuse 4G.

Simple, visual, and the jury can even compare devices directly

Question 7: iOS icon arrangement design patent infringement. Apple also spent a lot of time at trial talking about its D604,305 design patent, which covers the iOS icon grid. Designer Susan Kare testified repeatedly that there was no reason for Samsung to mimic Apple’s icon designs so closely, while Samsung was forceful in reminding the jury that she’d only looked at design, not function. Samsung also argued that this patent should be invalid, but again — that’s a question for a different section. there are 13 devices accused of infringing this patent, including the US variants of the Galaxy S, the Droid Charge, and the Infuse 4G.

Question 8: iPad design patent infringement. The jury then turns to tablets and Apple’s iPad D504,889 design patent, which covers the clean front, edge-to-edge glass, thin bezel, thin outer border, and rounded corners of a tablet. Samsung argued that this patent isn’t actually about the iPad, but rather an early prototype of the iPad that was much thicker. That’s important because if the jury believes Samsung, they can’t compare the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 directly to the iPad. Apple, of course, said it didn’t matter.

The Blackberry PlayBook finally goes 4G LTE, ...

Welcome to the future, PlayBook.

Over a year after its announcement, RIM has finally dropped the release date for the 4G LTE version  of its PlayBook tablet. Available in Canada August 9th, the device will be offered by Bell, Rogers, and Telus.

As expected, the device is almost identical to the non-4G PlayBook: it features a 7-inch display, HDMI out, a pair of cameras, and runs the latest version of the PlayBook operating system. RIM, however did upgrade the processor to 1.5 GHz, which edges out the 1GHz processor found in current models.

Notably, RIM isn’t going all-out on storage options: The 4G LTE PlayBook will only come with 32GB of storage, a move that echoes RIM’s decision to discontinue the 16GB version of the Wi-Fi PlayBook earlier this year.

For RIM, releasing a 4G LTE PlayBook is a clear sign that the company is still invested in the tablet space, something that investors and journalists have been skeptical off for a while.

Naturally, the biggest question on consumers minds (those of you that care, anyway) is this: when will the new PlayBook make an appearance elsewhere? RIM is mum on the details,  but we can expect announcements from the likes of AT&T and Verizon soon enough.

Motorola Xoom 4G LTE to get Android 4.1 soon

We recently saw that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS is already available on 0.8% of current Android devices. Granted, this is mostly because of the very successful release of the Nexus 7 tablet, and the quick upgrade rollout to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the WiFi version of the Motorola Xoom, as promised by Google. Needless to say, the current distribution of Jelly Bean is in a far better state than ICS, after it was first announced last year.

Even though the WiFi version of the Motorola Xoom received the update a while back, the rollout for the 4G LTE version, available from Verizon, would take a while, as it’s once again dependent on the network carrier. The good news is that it may not take as long as first expected.

One Droid Life reader says that he received the official update to Jelly Bean over the weekend. The screenshot above shows that the Android version is 4.1.1 with the build number JR003H. The baseband version, and the 4G notification at the bottom left of the screenshot proves that it is indeed the 4G LTE version of the Motorola Xoom. he also sent in a screenshot of Google now, which as we all know, is a feature available only on Jelly Bean.

It’s unclear whether this update was pushed out by mistake during Verizon testing, as there has been no official word yet of the carrier being to ready to rollout the upgrade. either way, that is one lucky customer, and this hopefully means that the latest Android OS is on the way for every Xoom 4G LTE owner out there very soon.

What are your thoughts? Mistake by Verizon, or the start of the official rollout? If you use a Xoom 4G LTE and have received the update, let us know in the comments section below.

4G BlackBerry PlayBook Gets Certified for Mobile ...

Research in Motion’s 4G BlackBerry PlayBook is now certified to fly on the airwaves. Bla1ze noticed one model of it hitting the PTCRB database listing OS 2.0.1.668 as the OS at certification. there is no release date which RIM has also been coy about so far. I am really curious to see what RIM has planned for the 4G PlayBook rollout. I know there are enterprises that are waiting for them and carriers like Verizon are almost definitely carrying them. My big questions are when and for how much.

Eight quick tips for the Motorola Xoom tablet

Takeaway: Jack Wallen offers eight quick tips for working with the Verizon-branded 4G Motorola Xoom tablet.

I spend the majority of my tablet time on a Samsung Galaxy, simply because it’s convenient and always close. Every once in a while, however, I have the desire to head back to my favorite tablet, the Verizon 4G Motorola Xoom. It’s heavier than the Galaxy, but it feels solid in my hands. I also recently noticed that the Xoom finally received the 4.0.4 upgrade — taking its awesome to eleven!

Many Android tips apply across the hardware spectrum, but some are specific to provider and hardware. The Xoom is no different, so I wanted to offer up a few tips for those who own the Verizon-branded 4G Motorola Xoom tablet. with that said, let’s get started.

Automatically sign up for our Tablets in the Enterprise newsletter!

Prior to Ice Cream Sandwich, taking a screenshot required the Android Software Developer Kit. That was a hassle and most users didn’t want to bother with. The majority of Galaxy owners have a nice little screenshot button on the panel of their default homescreen. this is not so with the Xoom. instead, in order to take screenshots, you have to use a key combination to get the job done. The combination is Volume Down + On/Off. It’s a tricky combination, and you have to make sure you hit both buttons at the same time (otherwise, you’ll just wind up turning the tablet off or turning the volume down).

Sometimes, you’ll install an app that doesn’t fit correctly on your screen. These apps can be primarily used for smartphones or apps the developer simply didn’t optimize for the Xoom screen. If you find this to be the case for some apps you really want to use, do the following:

  1. Download and install the Spare parts app from the Google Play Store
  2. Scroll down to Compatibility Mode
  3. Uncheck the Compatibility Mode box, then recheck it
  4. Back out of the app
  5. Go back to Spare parts, uncheck Compatibility Mode again
  6. Reboot your Xoom

Now, you should be able to use those apps that don’t fit perfectly on your screen.

If you have to visit a web site that requires you to use multiple pop-ups, there’s actually a way to do this. You must use your browser in portrait mode. For some reason, the Xoom browser will only allow for one pop-up in landscape mode. but once you get through the first pop-up, you can sometimes switch to landscape mode and still have it work.

If you live in the land of the impatient and need a faster, more efficient, way of switching home screens, I have the solution. instead of swiping left or right, simply tap the edge of the home screen you want to switch to. In other words, if you want to move one screen to the right, tap the right edge of your home screen. The same holds true for moving left — just tap the left edge of the screen.

There might come a time when your Xoom becomes unresponsive. In this case, you’ll have to do a hard reset. Simply press and hold the Power and Volume up keys at the same time. this will reboot your Xoom.

Not a fan of the mobile versions of web sites? Here’s how to always load the desktop version of web sites:

  1. Open the Android Honeycomb browser on your tablet
  2. In the address bar, type about:debug and press Enter
  3. Open the browser’s settings by tapping the icon in the very top-right corner of your screen
  4. Tap Settings from the drop-down menu that appears
  5. On the left side of the screen, tap the section labeled Debug
  6. On the right side of the screen, tap the item labeled UAString, and then select Desktop
  7. Press the back button (in the very bottom left-hand corner of your screen) to exit the browser’s settings

To return the browser to its default state, in the browser’s address bar, type about:debug.

You might not know this, but your Xoom has a slot for a Micro SD card. To gain access to this, pull out the small SIM card drawer at the top edge of the tablet. You’ll notice a second slot on top of the SIM card slot. this second slot is for the Micro SD card. Insert the card and gain extra storage.

When you have the notifications pop-up visible (tap the clock in the bottom right corner), you can switch back and forth between app notifications and settings notifications (such as wireless, brightness, auto-rotate, etc) by simply tapping the time again (only this time with the notification pop-up visible).

What tricks have you learned while using your Motorola Xoom? please share your tips in the discussion thread below.

Verizon’s Motorola XOOM receiving Android ...

The Android 4.0.4 update for the Motorola XOOM has begun to push to Verizon subscribers after reaching a small group of testers earlier in the week. The rollout will be staggered, which means some may have to wait longer than others to receive the new software version. The good news is that a trick first used to force the Android 4.0.4 update on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus also works with the XOOM.

  1. navigate to Settings/Apps/All,
  2. locate Google Services Framework,
  3. force stop the application and press “Clear data,”
  4. return to Settings and navigate to about phone/System update,
  5. press “Check now.”

Your mileage may vary, but initial reports are that this trick should trigger the update. Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Samsung Galaxy Tab Family getting Android 4.0 ICS ...

It’s about time Samsung starts updating all their Galaxy Tabs to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. They’ve released one at about every size you can think of, some more than once, and the latest Galaxy Tab 2 already has ICS out of the box. It’s only fair they get these updated and we are now hearing they’ll be doing exactly that starting next month.

According to insider reports to SamMobile the updates will start sometime next month and continue into August. Samsung plans to update almost all of their tablets although obviously the original 7-inch Galaxy Tab won’t see the upgrade. Here’s the list they apparently have confirmed:

GT-P6210 Galaxy Tab plus 7.0 WIFIGT-P6200 Galaxy Tab plus 7.0 WIFI + 3GGT-P6810 Galaxy Tab 7.7 WIFIGT-P6800 Galaxy Tab 7.7 WIFI + 3GGT-P7310 Galaxy Tab 8.9 WIFIGT-P7300 Galaxy Tab 8.9 WIFI + 3GGT-P7510 Galaxy Tab 10.1 WIFIGT-P7500 Galaxy Tab 10.1 WIFI + 3G

Pretty good news right there. it looks like they’ll be updating all of their tablets they’ve released as of late. most likely the Tab 7.7 LTE from Verizon will be last, but I’m hoping that isn’t the case as I own and love that tablet. Verizon tablets like the Xoom took forever to see the update over the WiFi model, but hopefully that won’t be the case here.

Along with all the new features, improved UI, face unlock (maybe) and more that ICS brings we can also expect better performance and battery life for these slates. Stay tuned for additional dates once Samsung makes this all official. Check out the reviews on all those tablets listed from our timeline below.

Motorola XOOM to Get Android ICS Update on June 4

The Motorola Xoom tablet is now ready to get the Android ICS update, which should make a ton of people happy. The official date for the big transition has been set in stone for June 4th, which is pretty late for a tablet that once boasted of being the first tablet to run Google’s tablet specific Android 3.0 Honeycomb. The Xoom has scored another first, though. The XOOM 4G is the first tablet from Verizon to be upgraded to Android ICS. The Wi-Fi version has already made the all important transition, so now it’s the 4G LTE versions’ turn. Also, while the Xoom is getting on-board the ICS bandwagon pretty late, users can still rejoice as they getting the latest Android ICS build, i.e. Android 4.0.4 IMM76K.

Among the interesting features that come with the upgrade are speech-to-text conversion software and the ability to customize the home screen via a “latest launch bar.” there will also be a built-in photo editor as part of the upgrade.

The Motorola Xoom may seem to be last year’s tablet, but there still are a good number of them in use and the upgrade should ensure the XOOM stays relevant.

Motorola XOOM gets Android 4.0 ICS upgrade – ...

This week Verizon has announced that the Motorola XOOM will begin to recieve the official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade and officially become the first tablet to do so on the carrier. this upgrade will boost the 10.1-inch tablet up to the newest version of Google‘s mobile operating system and will be the only tablet on the market with a certified Google-pushed vanilla version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. this upgrade brings with it a selection of new features for the tablet such as a built-in photo editor.

This upgrade also adds speech-to-text technology and a brand new launch bar for home-screen customization. this upgrade will be extremely similar to what we saw in the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade given to the ASUS Transformer Prime, the first tablet in the world to grab the update from Google – minus the ASUS additions. What you’re seeing above is a simulated screen on the original XOOM while below you’ll see the official photo editing app coming to the device with this upgrade.

Verizon reminds us here that they’ve also released a full list of devices they’ve got on Android 4.0 ICS currently, this list also containing devices that will recieve the upgrade in the future. Those of you using the following devices can expect upgrades inside the next few months:

HTC:HTC ThunderBolt™DROID Incredible 2 by HTCHTC Rhyme™HTC Rezound™

Have a peek here at the ASUS version of this software, again reminding yourself that this is not the exact same version of the software that the XOOM will be getting – but it’s close. the Motorola XOOM ICS upgrade will be pushed to the whole United States in waves starting today.

Verizon’s Motorola XOOM To Get Android 4.0 ...

Motorola-XoomVerizon is finally going to pull the trigger on the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update for the Motorola XOOM tablet.

On Friday, the company announced through its blog that the XOOM will receive an over-the-air update to the latest version of Android beginning Monday, June 4. They did not mention what time the update would begin, but we will keep an eye on it and update this story as information comes in.

Verizon said the update will include “speech-to-text technology and the ability to dismiss individual notifications by swiping a finger over an item.” Along with a variety of system upgrades, the update will also include a new photo editor which allows users to crop and rotate photos, correct the redeye effect, and apply effects and level adjustments.

Verizon notes that the XOOM is the first Verizon tablet that is being updated to Android 4.0.

Without naming any specific dates, Verizon says Android 4.0 updates are also on the way for the following devices: the HTC ThunderBolt, DROID incredible 2 by HTC, HTC Rhyme, HTC Rezound, DROID BIONIC, DROID RAZR, DROID RAZR MAXX, DROID 4, DROID XYBOARD 8.2, DROID XYBOARD 10.1, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, Spectrum by LG, and the Lucid by LG.

Android 4.0 was launched in October of last year. Its taken a while for carriers to prepare and skin the new OS for existing devices. But Android 4.0 is slowly gaining steam. a month ago, we reported that Android 4.0 was on 4.9% of Android based devices. since then, the number has grown to just over 7%, according to Android.com.
