The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for the iPad ...

For the last year and a half, I’ve carried my iPad (earlier gen, and now 3rd gen) in my “tech-bag” along with an Apple Bluetooth keyboard. For me, the iPad has truly become a laptop replacement. For 65% of the work I do on it, I get by just with the iPad. But for heavier writing and editing, I’ll add the keyboard so I can really crank. On a full-size keyboard, I can hit about 50 wpm, probably double what I can do on the iPad’s virtual keyboard.

I’ve tried a couple combination iPad-case/Bluetooth keyboards in the past, and always come away unhappy. First, they’re bulky, and second, the keyboards are just plain bad. I’ve never been able to type faster on them than I can on the virtual keyboard. So, they go away, and I go back to the Apple Bluetooth, which is not as convenient (it has a larger profile than the iPad, and could use a cover itself – I’ve lost a key or two over time due to rough riding in my bag).

But the Logitech Ultrathin does it right. First, it acts just like an Apple smart cover – it has those magnetic latches that just snap right on. and it has the little bit of magic that turns the iPad off when you close it. When it is closed, it provides a cover for the iPad that mimics the aluminum back. It looks, for all the world, like a 10″ MacBook Air.

When you open it, the keyboard separates. you set it on your work surface, and there’s a groove to set your iPad in, so it sits up like a proper monitor. then you can get down to typing. I mean really typing. Yes, it’s a shrunken keyboard. I can’t make 50wpm on it. But I can get 35-40, which is enough to make me feel truly productive. the feel is very, very good, and the layout is smart, including a dedicated Home button so you don’t have to push the one on your iPad.

Really, the Logitech Ultrathin iPad Keyboard turns the iPad into the perfect hybrid of laptop and tablet. you can type away like a crazy person, getting work done efficiently, but you can tap and move things on screen in that elegant, iPad way as well. For anyone who has ever gone from working on their iPad to working on their laptop, and then started tapping the screen, this will scratch that itch. I think my only wish is that more of the usual keyboard shortcuts we’re used to in OSX were available with this combination. But that’s software, not hardware (attention, iOS engineers!).

I am so happy with this cover, it’s one of those things where you can’t imagine ever going back. and it has great battery life (it re-charges via USB, but you only need to do that once a week, maybe). and, they’re coming out with a solar version, so no worries there.

We’ve seen plenty of tablets that try to offer bigger screens, more features, and faster processing than other competitors, but the Archos 9 PCtablet just wants to give you your Internet and media in a handy portable form-factor. It may not wow you with impressive specs or slick design, but it delivers on the promise of portability, and is one of the cheaper Windows tablets available today.

The Archos 9, design-wise, is something of a throwback to the old UMPC designs seen a few years ago. the bezel around the 9-inch touchscreen is beefed up on the right and left edges, providing what are effectively handholds on either side of the screen. On these handholds you’ll find physical controls for power, microphone, activating a virtual keyboard, a trackpoint mouse and right and left mouse buttons. You’ll also find an integrated 1.3-Megapixel webcam. On the side is a single USB 2.0 port, and on the back of the chassis is a folding kickstand that props up the tablet for hands-free viewing.

Measuring 5.4 by 10.1 by 0.67 inches (HWD), the Archos 9 isn’t smaller than competing tablets (though it has a smaller 9-inch screen), but it does offer a lighter weight (1 pound) and a lower price tag—you can find the Archos 9 new for under $400. for your money, however, you’ll be getting a resistive touchscreen (instead of capacitive touch), and Wi-Fi, but no options for mobile broadband.

The Archos 9 runs a 32-bit version of Windows 7, with several programs designed around entertainment, like vTuner for internet radio and tv streaming, Microsoft Security Essentials for protection, and Lotus Symphony, an office suite. All of this software is found on the Archos 9′s 32GB solid-state drive (SSD).

The Archos 9 is powered by a 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z515 processor, a three-year old piece of hardware, backed up by 1GB of RAM. Graphics are running on an equally outdated Poulsbo US15W chipset, which offers enough graphics horsepower for browsing the web, not much more demanding than that.

The Archos 9 PCtablet isn’t a new device—it debuted alongside the original iPad—but new units can still be bought, and at deep discount. if you’re in the market for an inexpensive Windows tablet, it’s certainly affordable, but it won’t stack up well against the newer Windows tablets on the market. if affordability takes precedence over ease of use and functionality, however, it may be just the tablet PC you’re looking for.

I picked up one of these the other day, when unnamed-office-chain emailed me (and everyone else in the US, apparently) a “$100 discount on any tablet” offer I couldn’t refuse.

Before I bought the tablet, I had done some research, knew its weaknesses, and knew that those weaknesses weren’t going to be a big problem for me. so far I am quite happy with my purchase.

So let me start out by confirming the tablet’s weaknesses. Compared to the iPad2 and the best Android tablets: the battery lifetime is poor, the screen is poor, the camera is poor, and it is running an obsolete version of Android (Froyo, 2.2.2).

If these weaknesses are a problem for you, forget the Streak 7 and get a different tablet.

For me, they weren’t really issues. I’ll be using the tablet for reading email and e-books, browsing the web, occasional games and occasional geocaching. It will not be my primary device for anything except maybe reading e-books, so its limitations just don’t matter much to me.

And now that we have gotten these limitations out of the way, let’s talk about what is good about it: at $200, it is a great value. Performance is quite good thanks to its dual-core 1GHz processor, and with 16GB internal storage and an available slot for a (up to 32GB) SDHC card, it has plenty of storage. The device can easily be rooted if you want to live on the edge and install a not-provided-by-Dell version of Android. if you prefer to stay supported, Dell is rumored to be releasing Honeycomb in August.
