Advent Vega Tablet: The Ipad Killer?

The Advent Vega comes to the fight with some impressive specs. First of all, and probably the first thing that consumers will notice, is the price. The Vega is fully half of what other tablet computers are retailing for, which is certainly going to earn the Advent Vega tablet some significant market share among those who don’t want to spend a lot of money on their latest high tech gadget. But are the rest of the specs worth spending even that small amount on?

The Vega features a 10.1 inch, 1024×600 resolution display with a capacitive touchscreen. Apple’s iPad has a 1024×768 display, but it’s only 9.7 inches. The new Motorola XOOM features a 10.1 inch display that is 1280×800 display. The Vega seems really competitive in this vital area.

The Vega has a 512 MB flash drive, and comes packaged with a 4 GB microSD card. The iPad and the XOOM both max out at 32 GB of storage. It’s clear that the Vega lags far behind in storage; there are smartphones with more built-in memory than the Vega has. 32 GB microSD cards will probably be available eventually, but until then you will be limited to 4 GB.

The Vega and the XOOM both have a dual-core processor built in. The iPad 2 also has a dual-core processor, but the original only has one core. The Vega is on equal footing with the big boys in this respect.

The XOOM and the iPad 2 both come with the option of 3G connection; the XOOM goes further and offers 4G thanks to Verizon’s infrastructure. The Vega is limited to WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, which will certainly limit its appeal. Advent promises that a 3G version is in production, but won’t be available for early adopters.

The XOOM and the Vega are both Android-based tablets; however, there is a difference between the versions of Android that each uses. The Vega is running Android 2.2 (Froyo), which is the latest version running on smartphones. The XOOM runs 3.0 (Honeycomb), which is optimized specifically for tablet computers. While Froyo is an outstanding OS, the advantages Honeycomb provides (a tabbed browser, 3D transitions, private browsing, and more) make it a better OS, especially for the tablets it is optimized for. Of course, the iPad 2 will be running iOS 4.3, which will be offered to smartphones and tablets alike.

It looks like the Advent Vega tablet, while a very affordable option for many consumers, will not be the iPad killer that some hope. At its price point, however, it is a good (not great) tablet.

Motorola Xoom Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update ...

Google promised that the Motorola Xoom would be one of the first devices to get the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update and it appears that the company will make good on that promise.

According to Droid-Life, members of Motorola’s Feedback Network have confirmed that Motorola has begun sending out invites to test new software. Motorola hasn’t explicitly said what the software is, but because we haven’t heard of any other upcoming updates, we’re inclined to believe that it’s the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update that Google promised for mid-July.

The update is going to be coming to the Wi-Fi model of the Motorola Xoom first. unfortunately, it’s unclear when the Verizon version of the Motorola Xoom will see the upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

It’s also not clear when the update for the Wi-Fi model will roll out. Should the testing of the software go well, the update should roll out in a matter of days. If there are issues, it could mean a bit of a delay.

Google originally promised Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Motorola Xoom, Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S would be among the first to see Android 4.1. the Motorola Xoom is the second device to get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. the first was the Samsung Galaxy Nexus HSPA+, which saw the software roll out last week.

Sadly, we still don’t have any timeline for the updates for the Nexus S or Galaxy Nexus but we expect to hear something come to the surface in the not-so-distant future.

That being said, those who own the Wi-Fi Motorola Xoom should be on the look out for a software update in the form of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean was originally announced at the end of June at Google I/O. the software is going to bring a number of new features and enhancements including Google now, re-sizable widgets, customization notifications, offline Voice dictation, and more.

Companies like HTC and Samsung have promised to update current device owners on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update time lines soon, but as of yet, we haven’t see any official details.

Lenovo’s $300 IdeaPad Tablet Has 9-Inch ...

Lenovo is aiming squarely for the bargain bin with its $300 IdeaPad A2109 tablet, which despite the low price still has a 9-inch display and a speedy quad-core Tegra 3 processor.

The Lenovo IdeaPad A2109 is available now through best buy. Specs include a 1280-by-800 resolution display, 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of built-in storage, a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and Micro HDMI output.

For software, the tablet runs Android 4.0. There’s no word on whether an update to Android 4.1, known as Jelly Bean, is in the cards.

Although we’re used to seeing cheap 7-inch tablets by now, it’s rare to see low-priced tablets with larger displays. at best buy, the closest competitors are a refurbished Motorola Xoom and an 8 GB Acer Iconia Tab A200, which both cost $330 and have 10.1 inch displays. Lenovo’s IdeaPad A2109 tablet is the only quad-core option, and the only one that runs Android 4.0, though its screen is a bit smaller.

Still, it’s no surprise that Lenovo has cut a few corners to get its price so low. There’s no MicroSD card slot on board, so 16 GB is all you get, and the multitouch display only supports four fingers at once. the design’s also a bit chunky by today’s standards, measuring a half-inch thick.

We may see some more activity in the big-screen tablet space soon, with Amazon expected to announce a larger Kindle fire tablet next week. but unlike the Kindle fire, Lenovo’s tablet runs a proper version of Android, and has full access to the Google Play Store and other Google apps. I haven’t seen this tablet up close yet, but it could be worth keeping in mind as an alternative once Amazon announces its new gadgets.

When the WiFi Motorola XOOM was listed as a target device for a Jelly Bean update, everyone with a Verizon branded device got a little up in arms. That disappointment and anger was to be expected, but so was the fact that the LTE tablet wouldn’t be snagging Jelly Bean right out the gates. Of course the WiFi models have all started to see some Jelly Bean love. So what about you Verizon owners?

According to one reader from Droid-Life, they picked-up an update to Jelly Bean on their Verizon Motorola XOOM. The update moved his XOOM to build number JRo03H, which is the newest update officially available. You can take note of the baseband for confirmation that it was indeed on the Verizon branded device.

Could Verizon have put it in the system for a brief moment by accident and then pulled it after some people got updates? maybe Verizon let a few loose in a tester situations ahead of their schedule. anything is possible. Until we hear official word from Verizon and or Motorola, we will file this one as a lucky user once of scenario.

Motorola’s Xoom Tablet Does Not Infringe on ...

Motorola’s Xoom tablet does not infringe on some of Apple’s community designs, the regional court of Dû³¥¬¤orf ruled on Tuesday. Apple wanted a Europe-wide ban on the Motorola tablet, a court spokesman said.

Apple tried to get the Motorola Xoom banned in Europe because it said Motorola infringed on three of its community design rights, unitary industrial design rights that protect the intellectual property of products sold in the European Union. the judge decided that the Xoom does not resemble the iPad enough, said Andreas Vitek, spokesman for the regional Dû³¥¬¤orf court.

Motorola filed a counter claim against Apple, demanding that the court decide that Apple’s community designs were invalid, Vitek said. however, the judge also denied that claim, he said, adding that while both companies lost their claims, Apple had to pay two thirds of the litigation costs and Motorola should pay one third. Vitek could not say how much each company had to pay.

All three community designs used in the case cover iPad designs, and all three designs have an invalidity procedure pending, according to the database of the Trade marks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union. this means that an application for a declaration of invalidity has been filed against that specific design, and that the invalidity request will be examined.

Community design 1222905-0001 contains drawings of an iPad-like device as does community design 001222905-0008. Community design 001222905-0002, however, contains photos of the first iPad. all three the designs were registered in July 2010 and in all three registrations Jody Akana is credited as the designer.

Apple cited a different community design to request a ban of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab sales in Europe last year. In that case, Apple’s iPad-related community design 000181607-0001 was enough to give Apple a preliminary injunction against the Tab 10.1, temporarily blocking sales of the tablet in the Europe.

The community design used against Samsung has also an invalidity procedure pending. it was registered in 2004 and designed by Bartley K. Andre. this design consists of drawings of an iPad-like device and is categorized as a “handheld computer” instead of a “portable display device” as the other three community designs used against Motorola are.

Apple declined to comment on Tuesday’s ruling and Motorola did not respond to a request for comment.

The European ban against the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was lifted last August in all E.U. countries but Germany. Apple won a permanent ban on the 10.1 in Germany in September. to circumvent that ruling, Samsung modified the appearance of the tablet and created the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, which Apple also attacked in German courts.

Apple is still pursuing a ban on the altered Galaxy Tab 10.1N and appealed a ruling of the regional Dû³¥¬¤orf court that decided the 10.1N was sufficiently altered. the higher regional court of Dû³¥¬¤orf is set to rule in the 10.1N appeal case next Tuesday, said Vitek.

The Motorola Xoom Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update has begun to roll out to owners just after the software reached the hands of soak testers.

We’ve heard from several Motorola Xoom owners who claim that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is rolling out and this seems to be confirmed by numerous reports which claim the same thing.

As of right now, we’re unsure whether this is a full on roll out or if the update has hit a select group of people to start. Owners of the Wi-Fi Motorola Xoom should head into their device’s settings, go to the About section and check to see if an update is available.

If it is, owners will be prompted to install Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google’s latest piece of software and an update that just recently was unleashed to soak test members to ensure its stability.

Typically, updates roll out just a few days after hitting the hands of soak testers so it’s no surprise that we’re seeing the roll out this soon after.

The Motorola Xoom was one of the original batch of devices that were promised Android 4.1 Jelly Bean from Google. Remaining on the list are the Nexus S 4G on Sprint and both the Verizon Galaxy Nexus and the Sprint Galaxy Nexus.

We assume now that the Motorola Xoom, Nexus S, and Samsung Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ have gotten their upgrades to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, those devices should be next in line to see the new software.

UK Motorola Xoom users finally get their hands on Ice Cream Sandwich

While U.S. users happily settle into Jelly Bean on their WIFI versions of the Motorola Xoom, the UK is just now finally getting its hands on an Ice Cream Sandwich update. the update brings the UK Motorola Xoom up to speed with Android 4.0.4, which is a big upgrade from Honeycomb, but still not nearly as satisfying as a jump to Jelly Bean would have been.

So why the different release frames between the UK and the U.S.? In the States, the Motorola Xoom WIFI is sold as a Google Experience Device, meaning it gets similar ‘early dibs’ rights that you’d find with any other Nexus device, whereas the Xoom in the UK isn’t.

I suppose it’s better late…

BERLIN — A German court has dismissed an Apple (AAPL) lawsuit seeking to ban the sale of Motorola’s Xoom tablet computer throughout the European Union.

In its case, Cupertino-based Apple claimed the Motorola product infringed its intellectual property because its design was too similar to the iPad.

In its verdict Tuesday, the court in the western city of Duesseldorf also rejected a request by Google (GOOG)-owned Motorola to declare Apple’s so-called Community design rights for the iPad invalid.

Community design rights are meant to protect the distinctive appearance of industrial products.

Apple and Motorola have clashed repeatedly over intellectual property issues.

The companies have 30 days to appeal the verdict to a higher court.

Nexus 7? Wait: Google's Motorola Xoom + Jelly ...

Motorola Mobility — which is now owned by Google — will soon release its existing Xoom tablet running Android 4.1, also known as Jelly Bean. 

It’s hard to read Google on how big that launch will be, but one would expect quite a bit of noise given that it will be Motorola’s first tablet release under Google ownership. 

Motorola and Google PR departments say Jelly Bean will be offered on Motorola’s Xoom in the coming weeks. It has started rolling out and will be offered on the existing tablet hardware more generally soon,  they say. 

Really? no tweaks to the CPU? no special hardware hooks exploting the “Butter” performance gains and UI advances in Android 4.1? no big hoopla? why the big drumbeat for Nexus 7  but not Xoom?

Let’s be clear. Motorola’s Droid not only put Android on the map in the smartphone space — it paved the way for perhaps the most successful commercial open source project in history.  

Android is Linux for the smartphone/tablet industry. Red Hat Enterprise Linux and other Linux varients are huge in the server and embedded markets, but this incarnation of Linux for the tablet is huge. Xoom is more of a competitor to iPad 2 than the Nexus 7. So why is Google so seemingly cavalier about this coming tablet release?

Of course, Google wants to be careful not to ruffle the feathers of its tablet OEM partners as it considers how it proceeds forward with its new identity as a tablet manufacturer — and competitor to those partners. 

Sources also remind me this is the first official release of Xoom under Google ownership. The deal only closed in late may, after all. 

So Google may be mum on this front to calm anxious OEMs and/or because it hasnt yet developed the next gen blueprint for Xoom.

Nevertheless, I think the next Xoom launch with Jelly Bean will be huge, considering the recent launch of Google Handwrite for better tablet search and especially the “Butter” performance and UI improvements that will hopefully make Android a far more compelling choice in the tablet market. 

I’ve owned several Droids and basically like them, but am constantly frustrated by latency issues, performance problems and user interface shortcomings. It is simply not as seamless and elegant as Apple’s iOS on the iPhone and iPad. For that reason, I have refrained from buying an Android-based tablet.

I, like many others, are awaiting a more mature Andoid experience — like the one promised by Jelly Bean — on a full featured tablet that not only crushes the Kindle but also goes nose to nose with the iPad2. 

I am waiting for Xoom 2.X or 3. I realize Google will continue to promote its ecosystem of OEMs and developers (the new 4.1 SDK came out recently) fairly. and the availability of Android as an open source project naturally levels the playing field. 

But I am awaiting the Xoom specifically — not simply because Motorola Mobility is owned by Google. Motorola on its own is largely responsible for Andoid’s smartphone success and hopefully (and especially) with Google ownership it will drive Android’s success in the tablet market. 

All is quiet out of Google and Motorola camps on that front — for now.  The next Xoom with Android 4.1 might just be pushed out soon with little fanfare, like the new Droids, while the next generation tablet is under development.  

The future of Android rests on its success in the tablet market and it looks to be a two-horse race in this market as well. all OEM partners will have a shot at the Android 4.1 code. but make no mistake: lots of eyes and ears are focused on what’s coming next ouf of this independent entity of Google on the tablet front.
